Welcome to Paranormal Spectrum, where we illuminate the enigmatic corners of the supernatural world. I'm your host, Barnaby Jones, and today we have a very special guest joining us:Katie Paige is a researcher and investigator specializing in UFOs, anomalous phenomena, cryptids, and high strangeness, with a primary focus on the Rocky Mountain region. She joined the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) in 2012 and has served in multiple investigative and leadership roles, including STAR Team Investigator, Special Assignment Team (SAT) member, Assistant State Director for Colorado, and Colorado MUFON State Director (2020–2023).Paige has also contributed to the preservation of MUFON's historical archives through her work with the MUFON Anomaly Research and Reporting System (MARRS), part of Project Aquarius. The archive originated in 2006 under then-MUFON International Director James Carrion and incorporates early MUFON and Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS) records, along with private collections donated by Walt Andrus and John Schuessler. Between 2014 and 2015, Clifford Clift and Debbie Ziegelmeyer organized and categorized the archive, and in 2016, Ken St. John developed the MARRS redaction system to support ethical access. In 2017, Paige was appointed MARRS Administrator and Team Lead. MARRS now operates as one of six active Project Aquarius research rooms under the direction of Robert Spearing and his team.Paige is the director of Rocky Mountain Ranch Research, which she founded to investigate the Colorado property historically known as Clearview Ranch in the APRO case files, a site recognized for long-term anomalous activity that predates the Skinwalker Ranch case by more than a decade. Her investigative work has been featured in documentaries and television programs, including Beyond Skinwalker Ranch, The UnXplained with William Shatner, UFO Witness, Beyond Belief with George Noory, On the Trail of UFOs: Night Visitors, UFOs Revisited, and Ron James's films Accidental Truth. She has also appeared on national radio programs and podcasts, including Coast to Coast AM with George Knapp and Chinwag with Paul Giamatti, and has presented at numerous conferences, including Contact in the Desert.Paige is the host of The Trifecta, Rocky Mountain Ranch Research's official podcast, and co-host of the UAP Studies Podcast. Originally from Tulsa, Tom graduated with a degree in business administration from Portland State University and had a career in the financial industry since the 1970's. He was most recently employed as a financial analyst with a local firm in San Antonio where he retired in 2019. He is an accomplished guitarist and has a daughter who is a pre-school teacher. Tom was invited to join the MUFON board in 1995 and experienced the organization's progress through the successive administrations of Walt Andrus, John Schuessler, James Carrion, Clifford Clift, Dave McDonald and Jan Harzan. He serves as Treasurer and focuses on long term and strategic issues for the organization. Tom has been fascinated by military and intelligence agencies' interactions with the UFO public. He has undertaken a research study of the history of the MJ12 affair, and intends to eventually publish his findings. After Project Blue Book was shut down in 1969, private UFO groups were the only organizations left in the U.S. that would take UFO reports, and the two biggest were the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena and the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization. Donald Keyhoe was ousted as NICAP's director just three days before the December 17, 1969, press release announcing Blue Book's termination, and NICAP quickly became a shadow of its former self while APRO, run by its founders Jim and Coral Lorenzen, remained a formidable and influential organization. That same year, a group of APRO investigators living in the Midwest organized by Walt Andrus as the Tri State Study Group, decided on May 31st to branch off from APRO and operate as the Midwest UFO Network. This was in reaction to the Lorenzens' move towards a more centralized management strategy seeking to direct all field investigations from their office in Tucson, Arizona. The Lorenzens, particularly Coral, who had a reputation for being contentious (she frequently took out her ire in the pages of the APRO Bulletin, and her earliest targets as far back as 1952 were Albert K. Bender and James W. Moseley) took the Midwestern group's decision personally and held a grudge for years to come. The Midwest UFO Network soon outgrew its Midwestern boundaries and the name was changed to the Mutual UFO Network in 1973. A rivalry developed between the two, and this resulted in clashes when they happened to converge on a given case, and a prime example of this is the 1981 Cash-Landrum case. Read more →Part IIn last week's blog, we began looking at documents that provide a behind the scenes look at the rivalry between the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization and the Mutual UFO Network. APRO was founded in 1952 by Coral and Jim Lorenzen and MUFON was founded in 1969 by members who split off from APRO amidst bad feelings. Things came to a head during the investigation of the 1981 Cash-Landrum incident. As it was reported to have taken place in Huffman, Texas, APRO handed the case over to the director of the Houston-based Vehicle Internal Systems Investigative Team, John Schuessler, who was also the deputy director of MUFON. Coral wrote an article one and a half years after the reported incident that was published in the June 1982 Vol 30, No. 6 APRO Bulletin headlined “Rumors Permeate Cash-Landrum Case” wherein she claimed to know that what witnesses Betty Cash, Vickie Landrum, and Colby Landrum saw was a “U.S. experimental aircraft.” She also insinuated that Schuessler, MUFON director Walt Andrus, and former Project Blue Book consultant and founding director of the Center for UFO Studies J. Allen Hynek were part of a cover-up as they all had ties to various government organizations. Schuessler responded with a five-page letter to Jim Lorenzen defending himself and pleaded that if APRO had real knowledge of what it was the witnesses saw, he should share it as all three witnesses, particularly Betty Cash, seemed to have suffered the effects of radiation poisoning. UFOs were big news in 1973. Besides the Pascagoula and the Coyne incidents, there were flaps all over the United States. One in Piedmont, Missouri, got started that year in late February with UFO reports involving cars stalling and radio interference. These caught the attention of a physics professor, Harley D. Rutledge, who was chairman of that department at Southeast Missouri State University at Cape Girardeau. Rutledge became fascinated to the point that he put together an investigation team of scientists, arranged funding, and ended up spending more than seven years observing unexplained lights while collecting data and photographs. In late 1973, he gave a presentation of what he and the group had gathered up to that point at the fall meeting (attended by John Schuessler of the Mutual UFO Network) of the Missouri section of the American Association of Physics Teachers. Rutledge finally published a book describing the investigation titled Project Identification: The First Scientific Field Study of UFO Phenomena in 1981. Today's guest is Adam R. Seipp, a Professor of History and Associate Dean in the Graduate and Professional School at Texas A&M University. Adam received all his degrees at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and before joining the faculty at Texas A&M he did visiting stints at UNC and Duke. He is the author of two monographs, Strangers in the Wild Place: Refugees, Americans, and a German Town, 1945-52 (Indiana 2013), and The Ordeal of Peace: Demobilization and the Urban Experience in Britain and Germany, 1917-21 (Routledge, 2009). He has also co-edited two volumes, Modern Germany in Transatlantic Perspective, with Michael Meng, (Berghahn 2017) and The Berlin Airlift and the Making of the Cold War, with John Schuessler and Thomas Sullivan (Texas A&M University Press, forthcoming, Fall 2022). In addition, Adam has presented his work in at least nine countries, published more than a dozen book chapters, and placed articles in some of the leading journals in his fields, including War and Society, Journal of Contemporary History, Journal of Military History, Central European History, and War in History. His research has been supported by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the German Historical Institute in Washington D.C., among others. His current book project is Base Politics, Local Politics, and the Cold War Transformation of Germany, 1945-1995, a social history of the American military presence in Germany. Adam is active in the Society for Military History, the German Studies Association, and the American Historical Association. Sam and Emma host John M. Schuessler, Associate Professor of Government and Public Service at Texas A & M University, to discuss his book Deceit On The Road To War: Presidents, Politics, and American Democracy, and how the blueprint to manufactured consent for US intervention developed over the last century. Professor Schuessler begins by situating his work coming out of graduate research on FDR and the leadup to WW2 in the early aughts, right as the debate around the Iraq war was peaking, and the inspiration he found in the parallels between how President Roosevelt and President Bush saw a window to get into war, and took it. Jumping back to 1941, Sam, Emma, and John look to FDR's perspective as the Second World War escalated, understanding that if the Nazis took control over the USSR or Europe our time at the top of the global stage would be over, while having to balance that with an anti-interventionist public that wanted no more than economic and military aid to the allies. They distill his plan into the sphere of the Atlantic, where FDR hoped to isolate any action, and the Pacific, where he wanted to avoid any military engagement. However, unable to find any excuses in the Atlantic to garner support for action against Germany, FDR's policy began to shift as he used an oil embargo to push Japan over the brink, expecting light retaliation and instead getting the Pearl Harbor attacks. Next, they walk through the state of the foreign policy elite at the time, who, much like the leaders of the Military-Industrial Complex today, were concerned with the downfall of the Liberal order above all, with much more invested in America's role as a global superpower than they have to lose in going to war. Jumping forwards, they contrast this with the tools George W. Bush had at his disposal, between a fully developed relationship between government, business, and the military, an incredibly homogenized media industry, and an ethos of “the end of history” in the air, all serving to bolster his choice to ride complete misinformation into decades of disaster and bloodshed in the Middle East. They wrap up by shifting to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as they unpack Biden's maneuvers to avoid joining the warfare compared with the complete lack of subtlety on Putin's end, as leak after leak reveals false flag plans and other clamors for justification, before they unpack the relationship between deceptions for war and deceptions for peace, and the similarities that intelligence disclosure plays among the two. Sam and Emma also touch on the updates to KBJ's nomination to the Supreme Court, the House's weed bill, and CNBC's unintelligible squawking about the Staten Island Amazon union win. Their conversation tackles the question of whether FDR willfully deceived the American public in order to persuade them to support WWII – and touches on perceptions of warring democracies as well as comparisons to the 2003 Iraq War. John Schuessler is an Associate Professor in the Department of International Affairs at the Bush School of Government and Public Service, Texas A&M University. Previously, he taught at the Air War College. Schuessler received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Chicago. In his analysis of presidential deception recently, Dr. Schuessler’s questions concern the visible depart that President Trump has marked in relation to the truth in the political arena. What is the relationship between democratic deception and self-deception? When does deception blur into self-deception? How does the current president differ from predecessors in the display of deception and/or self-deception? The host and guest analyze the current status of presidential rhetoric and what are the larger policy consequences stemming from these developments. They further undertake a historical perspective on the use of deception as a means to justify going to war, used by numerous presidents and administrations. Democratic deception in modern liberal democracies refers to leaders, who try to use deception or misinformation, or framing to change/swing public opinion in a certain way as a tool to shift the blame for war onto others. Referring to the theoretical framework developed in his book, Dr. Schuessler carries out a historical analysis of the use of deceit in foreign policy, starting with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) es una organización sin fines de lucro estadounidense que investiga casos de reportes de avistamientos de OVNIs. Es una de las organizaciones investigadoras del tema OVNI más antigua y grande de Estados Unidos. MUFON fue establecida originalmente como la Midwest UFO Network en Quincy, Illinois el 30 de mayo de 1969 por Walter H. U.S. politics inhibits foolish wars.In a new book, Deceit on the Road to War: Presidents, Politics, and American Democracy, John Schuessler darkens that story. The need for broad support in democracies, he argues, also encourages leaders to deceive the public. Examining the U.S. debate about entry into World War II, the Vietnam War, and the recent Iraq War, Schuessler finds that presidents used information advantages over the public to manipulate it into war. The result was good in World War II, but this history suggests that democracies, at least this one, might not be so wise about starting wars. Durante la noche del 29 de diciembre de 1980, Betty Cash, Vickie Landrum y Colby Landrum (el nieto de entonces siete años de Vickie) estaban dirigiéndose de regreso a su hogar en la localidad tejana de Dayton en el Oldsmobile Cutlass de Cash, luego de haber salido a cenar afuera. A eso de las 9:00 p.m., mientras se encontraban conduciendo sobre una carretera de dos carriles bordeada por una densa arboleda, las testigos dijeron que observaron una luz sobre algunos árboles. Inicialmente pensaron que se trataba de la luz de un aeroplano que se estaba aproximando al Aeropuerto Intercontinental de Houston (situado a una distancia de unos 55 kilómetros), por lo en ese momento le prestaron poca atención. Unos pocos minutos después -sobre una carretera serpenteante- las testigos vieron lo que tomaron o consideraron como la misma luz que habían visto un rato antes, pero ahora estaba mucho más cercana y se veía muy brillante. La luz, según alegarían posteriormente las testigos, provenía de un gigantesco objeto con forma de diamante, el cual en ese momento estaba realizando un vuelo estacionario justo por encima de la línea de la copa de los árboles. La base del objeto estaba expeliendo llamas y emitiendo un significativo calor. Vickie Landrum le dijo a Cash que detuviese el automóvil, temiendo resultar quemadas si se acercaban un poco más. Sin embargo, la opinión de la propia Vickie acerca del objeto pronto cambió : como cristiana renacida (born again Christian), ella interpretó al objeto como un signo de la segunda venida o parusía de Jesucristo, diciéndole a su nieto “Ese es Jesús. Él no nos dañará”. Ansiosa, Cash consideró la idea de dar un giro en U y regresar en sentido contrario, pero pronto abandonó esta idea debido a que la carretera era demasiado angosta y por considerar que el auto se quedaría atascado sobre los arcenes o las banquinas de tierra, que estaban humedecidos a causa de las lluvias que habían tenido lugar durante ese mismo anochecer. Cash y Landrum salieron del auto para examinar el objeto. Empero el pequeño Colby estaba aterrado, por lo que Vickie Landrum rápidamente regresó al auto para confortar al frenético niño. Por su parte, Cash se mantuvo fuera del coche “hipnotizada por la extraña vista” (mesmerized by the bizarre sight), según las palabras escritas por Jerome Clark. Continuó diciendo que: “El objeto, intensamente brillante de de un color plateado apagado, tenía la forma de un gigantesco diamante tallado, de un tamaño similar a la torre de agua del pueblo Texano de Dayton, con sus partes superior e inferior respectivamente cortadas, por lo que parecían más planas que puntiagudas”. Pequeñas luces azules rodeaban el centro del mismo, y periódicamente durante unos pocos minutos siguientes salieron llamas del fondo del objeto, creando el efecto de un gran cono. Cada vez que el fuego se disipaba, el OVNI “flotaba” hacia abajo unos pocos pies, en dirección de la carretera. Pero cuando dichas llamas volvieron a salir nuevamente, el objeto se elevó aproximadamente la misma distancia.” Las testigos luego comentaron que el calor era lo suficientemente fuerte como para hacer que la carrocería del automóvil se calentase de tal forma que tocarla causada dolor. Al respecto, Cash mencionó que ella tuvo que usar su abrigo para proteger su mano de sufrir una quemazón cuando finalmente abrió la puerta del coche para reingresar al mismo. Cuando tocó el tablero de instrumentos del automóvil, la mano de Vickie Landrum presionada sobre el vinilo emblandecido aparentemente dejó una huella palmar que fue evidente varias semanas después. Los investigadores citaron dicha huella como prueba del relato de los testigos; sin embargo, no existe ninguna fotografía de la misma. El objeto entonces se elevó hacia un punto más alto. Mientras ascendía por sobre las copas de los árboles, los testigos afirmaron que un grupo de helicópteros de doble rotor se aproximaron al objeto y lo rodearon en una formación cerrada. Cash y Landrum lograron contar 23 aeronaves de este tipo, similares a los Chinook usados por las Fuerzas Armadas de los Estados Unidos. Con la carretera liberada, Cash continuó conduciendo, alegando ver destellos del objeto y de los helicópteros desvaneciéndose en la distancia. Desde la primera vez que observaron el objeto hasta que lo perdieron de vista, los testigos dijeron que el encuentro duró unos 20 minutos. Basándose en descripciones dadas por el libro de John F. Schuessler. Respecto del incidente, parece que los observadores estaban dirigiéndose hacia el sur sobre la autopista estatal tejana FM 1485/2100 cuando alegaron haber visto el objeto. La localización inicial del objeto reportado, basándose en las mismas descripciones, era tan sólo un poco al sur de la carretera Inland, aproximadamente en las coordenadas Otros testigos Los investigadores posteriormente localizaron a un oficial de policía de Dayton, el detective Lamar Walker y su esposa, quienes alegaron haber visto 12 helicópteros similares a los Chinook cerca del área donde tuvo lugar el incidente Cash-Landrum, y aproximadamente al mismo tiempo. Estos otros testigos no informaron haber visto un gran objeto de forma de diamante. El detective Walker investigó este incidente pero fue despistado en numerosas ocasiones por oficiales militares de alto rango, incluyendo aparentemente algunos directamente vinculados con el Pentágono. Un día de abril de 1981 un CH-47 voló hacia Dayton. Mientras el pequeño Colby lo miraba comenzó a sentirse bastante mal. Vickie decidió llevarlo hacia el punto donde el helicóptero había aterrizado, con la esperanza de que la aeronave parecería ser menos atemorizante una vez posada sobre el suelo. Cuando llegaron al área de aterrizaje se encontraron con que ya había bastante gente allí y tuvieron que esperar durante algún tiempo antes de que se les permitiese ingresar al helicóptero y hablar con el piloto. Tanto Vickie como otro visitante alegan que el piloto dijo que él había estado en el área antes, con el propósito de investigar un OVNI que se habría encontrado en problemas cerca de la localidad de Huffman. Cuando Vickie le comentó al piloto lo feliz que estaba de verlo, porque ella había sido una de las personas que había recibido quemaduras de parte del OVNI, él se negó a seguir hablando y rápidamente las hizo salir de la aeronave. Consecuencias Problemas de salud Luego de que el OVNI y los helicópteros hubieron abandonado la zona, Cash llevó a los Landrum a su casa y se retiró a tratar de dormir. Aquella noche, todos experimentaron síntomas similares, aunque Cash los tenía en un grado mayor (de hecho, había sido ella quien había salido del automóvil a observar el fenómeno). Todos sufrían de náuseas, vómitos, diarrea, una debilidad generalizada, una sensación de quemazón en los los ojos y como si hubiesen sufrido se de quemaduras después de una exposición excesiva a la luz del sol. Durante el transcurso de los días siguientes, los síntomas de Cash empeoraron, con muchas ampollas grandes y dolorosas formándose sobre su piel. Cuando fue llevada a la sala de emergencias de un hospital el 3 de enero de 1981, Clark escribe que Cash “no podía caminar y había perdido grandes pedazos de piel y mechones de cabello. Fue dada de alta luego de 12 días, aunque su condición no era mucho mejor, y posteriormente regresó al hospital por otros 15 días. La salud de los dos Landrum (abuela y nieto) era de alguna forma un poco mejor, aunque ambos sufrían de una debilidad persistente, llagas en la piel y pérdida de cabello. Un radiólogo que examinó los registros médicos de los testigos para la red de ovnilogía MUFON escribió respecto de los mismos: “Tenemos fuerte evidencia de que estos pacientes han sufrido daño secundario debido a la radiación ionizante. También es posible que además haya habido un componente infrarrojo o ultravioleta”. Sin embargo, Brad Sparks contiende que, aunque los síntomas eran de alguna manera similares a aquellos causados por dicho tipo de radiación, la rapidez del ataque fue sólo consistente con una dosis masiva que había significado una cierta posibilidad de muerte en unos pocos días. Debido a que todas las víctimas vivieron varios años más después del incidente (y el entonces niño Colby sobrevivió al mismo sin mayores complicaciones), Sparks sugiere que la causa de los síntomas fue o habría sido alguna clase de contaminación química, presumiblemente por un aerosol. Investigaciones Vickie Landrum telefoneó a funcionarios de varias agencias del gobierno federal estadounidense, comentándoles sobre el encuentro cercano que alegaba haber experimentado. Cuando ella se contactó con la NASA, fue derivada al ingeniero aeroespacial John Schuessler, quien hacía bastante tiempo que estaba interesado en el estudio del fenómeno de los OVNIs. Con algunos asociados provenientes pertenecientes a la conocida red de ufología MUFON, Schuessler comenzó a investigar sobre el caso, y posteriormente escribió artículos y un libro sobre la materia. El astrónomo Allan Hendry, de la red CUFOS, también investigó el extraño caso Cash-Landrum. Debido a la presencia de los helicópteros Chinook, los testigos presumieron que al menos una rama de las Fuerzas Armadas de los Estados Unidos también habrían detectado la presencia del objeto, si es que no lo estaban escoltando o persiguiendo. No obstante, los investigadores no pudieron encontrar evidencia que vinculase a dichos helicópteros con alguna rama de la milicia estadounidense. En 1982, el entonces teniente coronel George Sarran, del Departamento del Inspector General del Ejército de los Estados Unidos, comenzó a realizar la única investigación completa y formal de carácter oficial o gubernamental sobre ese supuesto encuentro o incidente OVNI. No obstante, él no pudo encontrar ninguna prueba o evidencia concluyente de que los helicópteros que los testigos alegaban haber visto perteneciese a las Fuerzas Armadas de los Estados Unidos. Sarran concluyó que “Las sras. Landrum y Cash eran creíbles, el policía y su esposa [quienes afirmaron haber visto 12 helicópteros cerca del sitio del encuentro OVNI], también eran testigos creíbles. No había la percepción de que alguien estuviese tratando de exagerar la verdad”. En 1998, el periodista y escéptico respecto de los OVNIs Philip J. Klass encontró algunas razones para dudar de la historia relatada por Cash y Landrum. “Cuando Schuessler inspeccionó el automóvil de Betty en 1981, usando un contador Geiger para buscar radioactividad, no encontró ninguna. Presumiblemente también chequeó en búsqueda de rastros de la misma cuando visitó el sitio del (alegado) incidente y no encontró radiación anormal... [Schuessler] NO provee datos médicos sobre la salud de Betty ANTES del incidente OVNI. Ni provee ningunos datos médicos sobre la salud previa de Vicki o Colby” (Énfasis en mayúsculas en el original). Otros ovnílogos destacan que la radiación ionizante de alta energía de la clase que puede causar daños a los seres humanos (por ejemplo, la radiación de rayos gamma) no induce radioactividad en los objetos, y no habría dejado ninguna radioactividad residual en el área. De forma similar, el británico Brookesmith escribe al respecto: “Los escépticos siempre se han preguntado una pregunta no aguda y fundamental: ¿Cual era el estado de salud del trío antes de su alegado encuentro?” Acciones legales Finalmente, Cash y Landrum contactaron a los senadores estadounidenses Lloyd Bentsen y John Tower, quienes les recomendaron a ambas testigos entablar una demanda ante la oficina de reclamos judiciales de la base de la Fuerza Aérea de Bergstrom. En agosto de 1981, Cash, Landrum y Colby fueron entrevistadas durante un tiempo relativamente largo por personal de que entonces trabajaba en la Base de la Fuerza Aérea de Bergstrom, y allí de les comentó que debían contratar a un abogado y buscar compensación económica por sus heridas Con el abogado (attorney) Peter Gersten tomando el caso de manera pro bono, el caso se abrió camino por las cortes estadounidenses, y estuvo dando vuelta por ellas durante varios años. Cash y Landrum demandaron al gobierno federal estadounidense por USD 20 millones. El 21 de agosto de 1986, un juez de una Corte de Distrito desestimó su caso, notando que las demandantes no habían probado que los helicópteros en cuestión estuviesen asociados al gobierno de los Estados Unidos y que oficiales militares habían testificado que las Fuerzas Armadas de los Estados Unidos no tenían una gran aeronave de forma de diamante en su posesión o inventario. Años posteriores En 1981, algunos meses después del incidente, Vickie Landrum apareció en That's Incredible (“Eso es increíble”), un entonces popular programa televisivo que era transmitido por la cadena ABC. Vickie fue hipnotizada frente a una audiencia en vivo; bajo hipnosis ella hizo un recuento de lo que había vivido o experimentado durante aquel incidente del 29 de diciembre de 1980. Varios años después -ya en 1989- tanto Vickie como Betty Cash aparecieron en un programa especial de televisión titulado UFO cover up? Live! (“¿Encubrimiento OVNI? ¡En vivo!”), presentado por Mike Farrell. En el mismo hicieron un recuento de su alegado encuentro con aquel OVNI, además de sus subsiguientes problemas médicos y batallas legales. En 2009 Colby Landrum, ya de unos 36 años de edad para entonces, fue entrevistado en el episodio Aliens fallout (“Lluvia radiactiva alienígena”) del programa de televisión por cable “Cazadores de OVNIs” (UFO Hunters). En una notable coincidencia del destino, Betty Cash murió el 29 de diciembre de 1998, exactamente 18 años después de haber sucedido su alegado encuentro cercano del segundo tipo.
