Poetry has long served as a point of inspiration for classical composers. Just think of Beethoven's magnificent setting of Schiller's "Ode to Joy," Schubert's cinematic take on Goethe's "Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel," or Ned Rorem's soulful songs based on the words of Frank O'Hara. And now there's a new work to add to this storied tradition from composer Brian Raphael Nabors. In Upon Daybreak, premiered by the Berkeley Symphony in late 2022, Nabors turns to a poignant poem by the late Maya Angelou, "A Brave, Startling Truth." Rather than set the poem's text to music, however, Nabors distills Angelou's visionary call for a great "day of peacemaking" into a powerful orchestral work that imagines a utopian world without hatred or malice. "In the poem, [Angelou] talks about all the chaos, war, and dystopia that come about from us being humans and destructive," Nabors says on the latest episode of the Classical Post podcast. "But also all the beauty that comes from humanity and what we're able to offer. It talks about this day when all this war mongering ends finally and we realize that the true wonders of the world are ourselves and life itself." Commissioned by New Music USA as part of its Amplifying Voices program, Upon Daybreak has been performed by the Detroit Symphony, River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, and the Boston Landmarks Orchestra since its Berkeley premiere, and the work will make its way to the Seattle Symphony in 2024.  In this episode, Nabors and I talk more about composing Upon Daybreak and what it was like working with the Berkeley Symphony's music director, Joseph Young, on a host of community engagement projects leading up to the premiere. This week's episode is Joseph's testimony of how he overcame so many different battles in his life. Joe beat T-cell Leukemia at a very young age, then had several years of on-again, off-again battles with addiction to various forms of opiates. Joe has been sober for 5+ years now and is very active in ministry helping other people experience Jesus through addiction and recovery programs. This week we talk with Joseph Young of Interwoven from California. Joseph is a weaver who specializes in contemporary Zapotec weaving. For a little background, the Zapotec are an indigenous people that have lived in the Valley of Oaxaca for at least 2,500 years. Their one-of-a-kind weaving traditions have carried on to this day, showcasing unique colors and symbolism. Joseph, fell in love with this style of weaving and dove in, learning how to create tapestries in both the traditional and contemporary style. From the start of getting hand selected wool fibers spun for warp and weft, naturally dying the yarn, and executing the designs, he is intimately involved with each step of the weaving process, making these creations an extension of himself. Martin definitely wins. The success of the show is even more amazing considering it’s genre television––fantasy, to be exact. Some assert that the power of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, the book series upon which the crowning jewel of HBO is based, comes from the author’s willingness to ignore the conventions of the fantasy genre. Not so, argues Dr. Joseph Young in his new book, George R. R. Martin and the Fantasy Form (Routledge, 2019) Using the frameworks of literary theory relevant to modern fantasy, Dr. Young undertakes a compelling examination of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire and his employment of the structural demands and thematic aptitudes of the genre. Examining Martin’s approaches to his obligations and licenses as a fantasist, Young persuasively argues that the power of A Song of Ice and Fire derives not from Martin’s abandonment of genre convention, but from his ability to employ those conventions in ways that further, rather than constrain, his authorial program. Written in clear and accessible prose, George R. R. Martin and the Fantasy Form is a timely work which encourages a reassessment of Martin and his approach to his most famous novels. In a special segment of "By Any Means Necessary" Jacquie and Sean are joined by photojournalist Joseph Young and Eric Falquero, Editorial Director of Street Sense Media, to discuss the "Right to a Home" media project highlighting the issue of homelessness in Washington, DC, how the homeless are impacted by gentrification and the stark contrast between the living reality of homeless encampments and the wealth that surrounds them.

Joseph started by taking us all the way back to 3rd grade, when he discovered QuickBasic and the power of computers. We then discussed his musical background and the parallels between the music composition language and computing. He then briefly brushed over his USAF career and how he transitioned to the civilian life. Joseph told us about his first and second jobs, and how they convinced him to create his own company... that would be the antithesis of those jobs: remote, 30h/week, freedom, passion driven etc. We then discussed all those facets, in light of hiring, management, growing and much more.Joseph is a U.S. military veteran who retired and became a software developer. He quickly became frustrated with the way traditional companies are run and founded his own web design and development company, where he serves as the director of architecture. The company is remote, full-time is 30 hours, employees define their own roles and select what projects they want to work on, a portion of the profits is used to do pro-bono work for inspiring organizations. Now, he’s back in Baltimore, and back at Peabody, but he’s not a student this time. He’s the newly appointed Director of Ensembles at the world renowned conservatory. He’s conducting one of those ensembles, the Peabody Chamber Orchestra, in a concert tomorrow night at Peabody's Griswold Hall at 8:00pm, in a program that will include music by Bach, Ravel and Haydn.
