What nail color are you wearing right now? I'm asking because with so many things swirling in our world, it's easy to feel thrown off, unsteady, and confused. It's easy to forget who you really are and how you want to grow. Something as simple as your nail color is ready to help you remember who you are, want you want, and cheer you on. And I have some smile-inducing nail color stories from real women to prove it! In this episode, Mary shares three of her favorite nail color stories. Last week in episode 20, she gushed over the amazing storytelling of her gal pal Jill Baughan. You can hear for yourself by listening to her podcast “Find Joy…No Matter What!” Jill reminded Mary that over the years women have shared fun, unexpected, and inspiring nail color stories that truly made a difference in their lives. She encourages all of us to create similar stories of our own to cheer us on.In this episode we talk about:The history of nail color throughout the agesUsing our nail color to remind us of our strengthsTaking time to evaluate where we are and where we want to beHere's a glance:[2:29] Mary shares the history of nail polish including how it separated classes in ancient Egypt and was modeled after car paint in the US.[4:30] The French Manicure is a classy accessory that goes with any outfit, just ask Alice.[6:04] A True Aboriginal is the nail color that perfectly fits Joanne's current lifestyle.[8:09] Deborah was interviewing for a new job and a friend's Tutti Frutti nail color gave her the power to be her true, confident self.[9:59] Julene took some time to evaluate her True to Be You nail color when her life filled like a swirl. [14:08] In the Flip the Chip segment, Mary reminds us to put on some fresh nail color, give it a name that inspires us, and every time we look at it let it remind us to remember our strengths.Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts —“Mary and the Live Like Your Nail Color podcast is inspiring and fun!”
November is National Native American Heritage Month, which pays tribute to the rich history and culture of the indigenous people of the Americas. In 2009, during President Barack H. Obama's first term in office, November became National Native American Heritage Month. Magdalena Sunshine Serrano is an Indigenous woman of Serrano, Apache, and Tarahumara descent and Julene A. Jose, is an Indigenous woman of the Tohono O'odham Nation who also serves on the Pasqua Yaqui Tribe. Magdalena and Julene will share their perspectives and their wisdom about healing, hope and empowerment in their communities. We can all learn from their collective wisdom. They both will also address how the Community Resiliency Model is congruent to their organic views of healing. Over the last decade the Trauma Resource Institute, our sponsor, has had the honor to learn about the true history of the Indigenous people who lived in these lands prior to the Europeans who settled in the Americas. The suffering has been great, and the maltreatment of Indigenous people has been a holocaust often not acknowledged. The strength and beauty of the diverse cultures and traditions of Indigenous people will be discussed as well as the strength that springs forth from their cultural traditions.

In this informative, inspiring and often touching interview, Mark Ralph, the president of Claremont Tutors, brings to light one of the many real-life, transformational success stories CT has had a hand in over the last decade and more. Claremont High School star student Julene Carson and her mother, Kelly, describe Julene's path from struggling with math and other subjects in early grade school and how the turnaround that CT's skilled tutors consistently provided all along her scholastic journey, culminating in the stellar accomplishments she now has achieved as a direct result. Julene and Kelly recount how the one-on-one assistance, understanding and inspiration that CT's top-rated Graduate School-level tutors consistently brought imbued in Julene a passion and excitement for learning and excelling that not only helped propel her to the top of her class, but brought unexpected, welcome collateral improvements in her life overall. Now a CHS senior, about to graduate with a 4.2 GPA and among those in the Advanced Placement group at CHS, Julene already has substantial scholarship offers and acceptance to top-tier colleges in-hand. Julene and Kelly both honestly credit the quality, influence and value of Mark Ralph's Claremont Tutors as being absolutely key to that success. This episode ought to be required listening for parents who want to enable their offspring to achieve better grades, go to better colleges, get better jobs and as a result, live better lives. Enjoying listening to Kelly and Julene extoll, in their own voice and words, the advantages provided by Claremont Tutors is a time-investment every parent, student and even CUSD educators should make without hesitation.--------------------------------------------------------------------Please visit Claremont Tutors' website: https://www.claremonttutors.com/

Julene Simko called 911 in a panic. She’d just discovered her husband dead in their bed. He’d been shot in the back of the head by an intruder. She’d already grabbed a gun and fired two shots to scare off the attacker, but she feared the person was still in the house. But who could the intruder be? Julene and Jeremy’s home in rural Vermilion, Ohio, was remarkably secure. They had multiple guard dogs, a security system, and plenty of guns. Who could have gotten past all those safeguards and murdered Jeremy Simko? Then Kristin tells us about real estate agent Beverly Carter. In 2014, Beverly was the top selling and listing agent for Crye Leike Realtors. The previous year, she’d sold $12 million in real estate -- no small feat in central Arkansas. So when a man calling himself Steven Adams reached out to her about buying a new house, Beverly was all ears. Steven said that he and his wife, Crystal, were relocating to the area. They were cash buyers. That meant a quick sale for Beverly. But Beverly was cautious. She corresponded with Steven by phone and email for a few weeks. When he asked to meet her out at a rural property, she insisted that his wife Crystal meet them there, too. Crystal got on the phone and assured Beverly she’d be there. But when Beverly arrived at the home, Crystal was nowhere to be found. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. Homies we got a good one for you. Our special guest this episode, China Tommy is bringing great questions and even better stories. Kyle met China Tommy while they studied abroad together and convinced him to come along and share some laughs. We dive into quirky facts about each other, like why Wil thought Kyle was annoying and how Julene thinks that she is on her own version of the Truman Show.
I love sleepovers, spooning, sharing, sex, storytelling, and stargazing, among other things. So I metaphorically rolled them all up in audio form and called it a podcast. horizontal with lila is Slow Radio. It’s intimacies of all kinds. It’s us lying down, wearing robes, sharing secrets, in your ears. Each session with a guest is between 2 and 3 hours long, and divided into two episodes. Part ones are available anywhere you get your podcasts, and part twos are available only to patrons of the horizontal arts. Become a patron of $5+ per month soon, because... When I launch Season 3, I’ll be shifting some things, revealing a couple surprises, and revamping my Patreon tiers: If you’re already in as a patron, you’ll be grandfathered in with access to all the episodes at the 5 - 15 dollar level. Fair warning, lovers! *** This Thursday night in Brooklyn, come Valentine’s with us! Valentine's Day is in less than a week, and I would usually be fretting about what to do.This was especially true if I was single, but it was also very much true when I was part of a couple. What could I do that wouldn't have me feeling lonely? How could I turn this day of forced romance and commerce and couples privilege... into a day that would actually be nourishing for Me?I tried dating myself on Valentine's. I tried friend-time. I tried tango festivals. I tried Galentine’s Day. But what I actually desired was an intimate, pleasure-focused experience for myself. I desired sensation play, delicious treats (that were safe for me to eat), titillating performance, immersive theatre, and one-on-one connection. I really wanted to make Valentine's day about delighting all of my senses, not about the arbitrary fact of whether I was romantically linked to another person on that day.So I’m curating it. It's called 14 Rooms, and it will be on Valentine’s night. It’s an event for everyone, whether you’re not in a relationship, in a relationship, in a polycule, in a situationship — no matter what our quote unquote status is, we can gather and explore intimate moments of different kinds. Together. As a community celebrating pleasure, our senses, and our aliveness. Celebrating Big Love. Come Valentine's with us. It will be delicious. It's the Valentine's I've always wanted. P.S. If you’re short on funds but full of enthusiasm, send me a message through horizontalwithlila.com or Instagram to see about a possible volunteer shift. *** Apropos of everything - in this episode, I lie down with Annie Lalla, Goddess of Love and world-class relationship coach. Annie stands for true love. She is a gladiator of empathy. In this first part of our conversation, we talk about the correlation between self-esteem and soul mates, how couples cross-train each other, footnoting our parents for the superpowers born on the back of their crazy, optimizing for aliveness, empathy algorithms, integration and differentiation (the inhales and exhales of relationship), the phrase “I’m angry, but I love you more than I’m angry,” and using your creativity to adjust your emotional response to your reality. I first met Annie when she gave a talk about true love in the Speaker Series I co-lead at Burning Man 2018. The theme was The Year of the Robot, and we had... technical difficulties. The mic was down, so somebody found Annie a little toy bullhorn, and we all gathered round her like children at storytime, to press our burning questions into her hands like love letters. She is one of the most poignant extemporaneous speakers that I’ve ever witnessed on stage. I took copious notes, because I’d literally never heard anybody speak about love the way that Annie does. These are some of the words I captured: “cartographer of love” “kilojewels of energy” “There’s an I that has to be sacrificed on the altar of us. If you’re not feeling terror, you’re not actually playing the game.” “the sacred mirror” And “Nothing compares to the gymnasium, to the dojo of a true love relationship.” I imagine by now, you know how I feel about words. I savored Annie’s words, wrote them down in red ink, and fervently hoped that she would get horizontal with me someday. The time wasn’t right at Burning Man. But when I booked my ticket to Miami, taking a loving risk to go meet a man I’d been communicating with for four months, but had never met in person (a risk I imagined that Annie would approve of mightily) and I found out that Annie was in Miami! Well! Come lie down with us on a big white bed with a view of the ocean, in Miami, Florida. *** For horizontal photos and behind-the-scenes videos (like the one I took of Annie’s glorious red carpet ocean-view apartment), follow @horizontalwithlila on Instagram. I’ve been getting reallly into Instagram lately, and I have a cache of colorful photos to share. If you are in need of the services of a Love Coach (and really, who isn’t?) you can commune with all things Annie through annielalla.com This episode was edited by Mr. Chad Michael Snavely, bearded man, father, and podcast impresario. Have a peek through his roster on chadmichael.com. The character illustration and graphic design for my cover art was drawn by Shana Shay. Look her up on 99Designs. And my sweet intro music was composed by Alan Markley, rock star father and @plasticcannons on Instagram. Next week’s episode, 68, part two of my conversation with Annie, will be available to patrons of $5 a month and up. The Patreon tiers will change in the next month or so, so lock in access to The Full Horizontal at the grandfathered rate by becoming a patron now! Patreon.com/horizontalwithlila Welcome to my newest patrons, Bob & Lee! And so much gratitude to Julene for raising her Patreon pledge. After my trip to Miami, I’m feeling turned on by life. I wish you that! And as always, I wish us someone to love, something to do, and something to look forward to. Thank you for becoming horizontal.

Julene is a pastors' kid, a mum, a teacher, a youth pastor, and much, much more. Josh and Jesse talk to her this week about her life, growing up in the church, contributing to youth ministry and finally, leaving the bubble and venturing out into the unknown. She breaks down beautifully what it means to be missional outside the safety of Christian community, and some of the challenges and struggles that go along with that. We hope you feel inspired and challenged to look outside yourself a little bit more, and maybe, leave your bubble too. Beringia (start time 0:55). We present an excerpt of Shelly Schlender's interview with University of Colorado scientist John Hoffecker, lead author of a recent paper in Science magazine about the Beringia land bridge and the people who lived there 25,000 years ago. The full interview can be found here. Dolphins & Climate Change (start time 4:40). Dr. Denise Herzing, the founder of the Wild Dolphin Project, has been building relationships with Atlantic Spotted Dolphins for 28 years. Her quest to learn whether dolphins have language, and to learn that language, is notable for its longevity. But her relationship with them is remarkably respectful, too. We last spoke to Dr. Herzing in the spring of 2012, about her book Dolphin Diaries: My 25 Years With Spotted Dolphins in the Bahamas. We're very glad that she's with us again, to help us learn about how large marine mammals may be responding in unusual ways to changes in the oceans. The Ogallala Road (start time 15:15). We often hear about how the Colorado River is running dry. The Western states that rely on its flowing water are struggling to reckon with how its depleting reservoirs will satiate growing populations. You’ve probably seen images of the white “bathrub rings” at Lake Powell and Lake Mead that expose the water line rings of years ago. But there’s an equally dramatic and dangerous drop in an invisible source of water. That’s the Ogallala Aquifer – an underground basin of groundwater that spans eight states on the High Plains, including Colorado. Nearly one third of irrigated cropland in the country stretches over the aquifer. And the Ogallala yields about a third of the ground water that’s used for irrigation in the U.S. The story of the Ogallala’s depletion is a very personal one for author Julene Bair. She lives in Longmont, but years ago she learned that the family farm in Kansas that she inherited had been a big part of the problem. Julene has written about her journey, including her desire to make the farm part of the solution. Julene joins us on the show to talk about her new book The Ogallala Road: A Memoir of Love and Reckoning. Hosts: Jim Pullen, Susan Moran Producer: Joel Parker Engineer: Joel Parker Executive Producer: Jim Pullen Additional contributions: Shelley Schlender Listen to the show:

The Sistine Madonnaby RaphaelIn many ways, Julene traveled a traditional path through Mormonism as she raised her children, but when her oldest son decided to be done with the church rather than depart on a mission as she was expecting, she began a journey that lead her toward a world of thought filled with the Divine Feminine. From the roots given to her subtly by her mother, Julene built further with the Christ-centered philosophy of anthroposophy created by Rudolf Steiner, as she moved toward re-enthroning Sophia in her spiritual life and seeking for a true balance between the Divine Feminine and the Divine Masculine.
