Small and medium-sized cities were both the subject and the site of research and development in the Research Training Group "Medium-Sized Cities as Co-Participation Cities ". In addition to the group of twelve doctoral students, a network of 40 small and medium-sized cities was established and developed into a space of discussion and resonance for the specific concerns and resources of these cities. The transformative work and knowledge transfer was based on an agent-based approach, which allowed the doctoral students to work directly in the medium-sized cities. Lea Fischer, Marie Graef, Julia Shapiro and Tomás Vellani talk to Agnes Förster about their experiences with iterative process design within the programme. They reflect on their methods, perceived roles, and anticipated impacts. Julia Shapiro and Gretchen Grimm are one half of Seattle's noisy dream pop legends, Chastity Belt. Their 5th album, Live Laugh Love (out March 29th via Suicide Squeeze Records) is a dreamy layering of guitars, vocals and gentle rhythms that guide the listener through both emotional sincerity and lighthearted nostalgia, all with the sheen of cheekiness that the band has celebrated from the beginning. Julia and Gretchen share the process and inspiration behind the new record, its cover art, and how the power of simplicity guided the recording. The three discuss biking in Seattle, essential skills learned on the road and their relationship with music in their formative years. For the first time we take a few questions from friend of show John Atkins that leads to a thorough education on The Harp Twins and how to make a Renaissance Faire hat on the cheap. As always we hear a few tunes from the record. Chastity Belt Suicide Squeeze Episode supported by Distrokid Episode supported by Izotope
Who Is She? - My My Orca Card a 2023 single on Father/Daughter. Seattle supergroup Who Is She?, made up of Bree McKenna of Tacocat, Robin Edwards AKA Lisa Prank, and Chastity Belt frontwoman Julia Shapiro, have been making sweetly sardonic music since 2017, when they released their debut record Seattle Gossip. After a few years of silence from the trio, the band went from Who Is She? to Where Are They? (Admittedly, busy with their other bands.) But they came back in a big way when they were invited to be the house band for Seattle's newly established hockey team The Kraken for a weekend and played “My My Orca Card” at “Jeff Bezos' Climate Pledge Arena.” A reimagining of Le Tigre's 1999 song “My My Metrocard,” the song takes aim at Amazon's head honcho and multi-billionaire Bezos. “Oh, no /Jeffrey Bezos /He's such /A total jerk /Shut down /all the bookstores /Billionaires /Do not work.” They were swiftly fired after one night of playing the song, making it the most punk, anti-establishment music moment to happen in Seattle in far too long. Hear more about the story of how this legendary moment came to be in KEXP's Dusty Henry's interview with the band prior to their performance and watch Lisa Prank's KEXP in-studio session from 2016 at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Our guest today is Julia Shapiro. Julia is a musician who is perhaps best known as the lead singer and guitarist in the band Chastity Belt, which formed in Washington state in 2010. Chastity Belt have released four studio albums, including, most recently, 2019's self-titled record. Julia's work isn't just limited to that band, though, she's also part of the group Childbirth and has released solo records too. A key theme throughout her work, Julia says, is her Elliott Smith influence, which we, of course, discuss in this interview. We also talk about her views on Elliott's songwriting style and why she's never stopped listening to his music. Hope you enjoy the episode! This week's Talkhouse conversation features a pair of indie musicians—one of whom is known a bit better for another career—who recently collaborated on a song, and who have lots to say about creativity and the current state of the music biz: Hrishikesh Hirway and Melina Duterte, aka. Jay Som. If you recognize Hirway's name, chances are good it's from one of his popular podcasts: The best known is probably Song Exploder, on which Hirway and a guest break down a single song, spending time to get at its component parts and to explore the creative process. (Perhaps it goes without saying that it shares some DNA with the Talkhouse Podcast.) Guests over the years have included Bjork, Spoon, St. Vincent—the list goes on and on. Song Exploder became a Netflix series in 2020, with Hirway acting host on the TV version as well. In addition to that, he's behind some other great podcasts, including the fun pandemic-era food chat show Home Cooking, which he co-hosts with Samin Nusrat. With all of that on his plate, it's easy to overlook that Hirway spent many years making gentle, melancholy indie music under the name The One AM Radio. That part of his life took a backseat to his other pursuits, but music called him back, and he spent some time over the pandemic recording some songs that he's slowly releasing under his own name. The first was a collaboration with famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and just this week came the second: a collaboration with today's other guest, Melina Duterte, who's better known by her project's name, Jay Som. The two met because Duterte was a guest on Song Exploder, where she spoke about her song “Tenderness.” Though he didn't actually host that episode, Hirway loved what he heard, and the two struck up a friendship that led to Duterte guesting on the touching song “Home.” If you like what you hear, the Jay Som catalog is thoroughly fantastic. Her last album under the name was 2019's Anak Ko, but she's spent time producing and collaborating with other folks over the past couple of years, including production duties for the latest album by Julia Shapiro of Chastity Belt—a recent guest on this very podcast. Jay Som's music is often called “bedroom pop,” but after people hear this conversation, they may have to start calling it “attic pop,” since Duterte recently relocated to a private top floor of her own. Elsewhere in this conversation, she and Hirway talk about the hot mess that is the music industry, the software they sometimes use, and the alt-rock band that Duterte obsessed over as a pre-teen. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Hrisikesh Hirway and Melina Duterte for chatting. Check out their collaborative song, “Home,” and be sure to follow them both—and Talkhouse!—on your favorite social media channels. See you next time!

For this week's Talkhouse Podcast episode, we rounded up a pair of friends who deeply admire each other's playing and songwriting—and who ultimately met because of a different episode of the Talkhouse Podcast: Kurt Vile and Julia Shapiro. Kurt Vile first came into music fans' consciousness as part of The War On Drugs, though it wasn't long before he decided to dedicate his time to his solo material. He's released a string of incredible albums since, including 2013's instant classic Wakin' On A Pretty Daze and 2018's Bottle It In. As you'll hear in this conversation, he's been hard at work, writing "too many" songs for a new album. In 2017, Vile collaborated with Australian singer Courtney Barnett on an album called Lotta Sea Lice, and it was Barnett who turned him onto Julia Shapiro and her band Chastity Belt. When Barnett and Shapiro chatted on this very podcast back in 2017, that sealed the deal for Vile, who became a huge Chastity Belt fan—and eventual friend of Shapiro's. Now Chastity Belt, which started life about a decade ago in Washington State, has released four powerful albums over the years, most recently a self-titled set in 2019. But the occasion for this conversation is actually Shapiro's second album as a solo artist. It's called Zorked, a word that means kind of what you might think: extremely stoned, or maybe just completely out of it. That's how Shapiro felt after moving to Los Angeles at the beginning of the pandemic, where her social circle was smaller and the world kind of closed in on her. The result is a weird, incredible set of songs Shapiro co-produced with her roommate Melina Duterte—aka Jay Som. That might sound a little serious, but Julia and Kurt have a fun chat here, talking about how they met, how Kurt mistook Chastity Belt for another band at first, how Julia once crowdsurfed at one of Kurt's shows, and Julia's love of TikTok. She even tries to convince Kurt to sign up. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Kurt Vile and Julia Shapiro for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcast and social media outlets. We listen to Chastity Belt's 2017 release, I Used To Spend So Much Time Alone. Some would say this is their "mature" release coming from a band who released songs "Cool Slut" and "Giant (Vagina)". We would say that they got more confident in their songwriting and made a timeless, dark record. They grew up and the same party-time things they used to get off on got old. All of this is in direct contrast to the Kmart photo session promo pics and the Grunge or Totally 90's videos they put out to get everyone excited. They are a contradiction and smart as hell. Their transcendent and charming live shows have taken them on tour to Europe twice, earned them the support slot on one of Courtney Barnett’s multiple US tours, seen them share stages with Wire, Death Cab For Cutie and Protomartyr as well as gracing festival line ups including Sasquatch, Sled Island, The Great Escape and NXNE. Recorded live at the PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 4th of October 2016. Hobo Magic: Hailing from Sunshine Coast in Queensland, our next artists have a tendency to make heads nod and air guitars suddenly appear with their brand of Sabbath-esque stoner-groove. Their name is Hobo Magic. They have 2 records out with their third record coming out in 2017. Recorded at the PBS FM Melbourne Studio on the 29th of June 2016. Horsehunter: Horsehunter have been sonically brooding since 2012, but already sound like a band so tight and wise beyond their years. Their interests include Slayer, kites and tacos. Two years in the making, their debut album ‘Caged In Flesh‘ melted faces in 2015. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 18th of December 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.

It's Startup Week on So Money. We're going to talk to some amazing entrepreneurs that are in the startup phase of their businesses. This themed week was really inspired by my show Follow the Leader, where I've been spending time with billionaires and mega-entrepreneurs as they make tough decisions behind the scenes, how they execute strategy and run their businesses. So, I thought, wouldn't it be kind of interesting to look at some startups, some younger entrepreneurs, fledgling entrepreneurs as they're in the first year, two or three, of their business. Today's guest is Julia Shapiro. She's the CEO and co-founder of Hire an Esquire. It's an on-demand attorney workforce platform that helps attorney's connect with law firms and corporate legal departments to build a freelance career and alternative career path. It's been called the "Uber" for attorney's. The company is backed by a variety of investors, which is why I wanted to have her on the show for startup week. Her clients include Fortune 500 legal departments and AMLaw 200 firms. This past fall, Julia was named one of the Top 150 Professionals under 35 and top 10 Innovators in the Legal Industry by LinkedIn's Next Wave 2015. In my conversation with Julia we learn, how do you find investors for your business? Julia shares how she was able to attract investors. And answers the question I have which is, what happens in that boardroom? What do you say to convince those rich people to give you their money? She also spills on some of the astonishing things that she has encountered as a female in Silicon Valley as she's tried to go and build her business. And the Eureka behind Hire An Esquire, why exactly did she want to start the business? For more information visit www.somoneypodcast.com.
