And because it would be a huge challenge to cut through the noise in the MarTech/RevTech space, they engaged an external consultant to conduct research and help with the positioning process. They explored the competitive landscape, market trends, and the company's unique value proposition.Through testing and feedback, they arrived at the positioning as a revenue automation intelligence engine, emphasizing the company's ability to predict and prioritize revenue-generating actions, automate revenue intelligence, and provide data-driven insights for go-to-market teams. The repositioning efforts showed a 2X increase in demo conversions. In this episode, Curran talks about: The importance of positioning before messaging and branding, as it provides a solid foundation for effective communication and differentiation in a crowded market.Vetting new job opportunities: funding, understanding their key metrics (CAC, LTV, churn), board involvement, and the experience of the founders.Using a test and learn approach to their messaging change by conducting bi-weekly tests on their website, paid advertising, and other channels to gather data and feedback. Other resources to check out:Interview with Vinay Bhagat, Founder and CEO of TrustRadius who publish a yearly report about how B2B buyer behavior is changing. The Lead Gen Mistake I Guarantee You're Making – how to create content that better identifies intent from today's b2b buyer. And, if you want an outside look at your content with actionable advice, take advantage of our Content Audit. Valued at $20K in free consulting.

That 30% plunge in their customer base is permanent! This according to Bud Light distributors!”  “Perhaps the single, most fundamental reason why Bud Light looks like it will never get these customers back, when all is said and done, is not even so much the whole Dylan Mulvaney fiasco, as absurd as that was, it's the way the Marketing VP Alissa Heinerscheid openly insulted Bud Light's loyal customer base, saying that the brand needed to pivot away from them to a more inclusive (i.e. woke) audience!”     Timestamps: [01:47] Bud Light is not America's number 1 beer anymore [04:03] Is it part of the ongoing repercussions for Bud Light's disastrous trans-activist marketing? When Amrita Mathur joined Superside as their first marketing hire in 2019, there was no product, no platform, and no recurring revenue. She is no stranger to being called in when companies are at a strategic inflection point with their growth strategy, so she did what she spent a career in B2B marketing learning how to do: implement a marketing-led growth strategy that translated into $8 million in subscription revenue in the first year and 400% year-over-year growth since then. Amrita is passionate about community, but she denotes an important difference between community building and a sense of community. For her, it's about a sense of goodwill and feeling like you have someone in your corner. Now as VP of Marketing, with that sense of community top of mind, she and her team are revolutionizing design at scale for ambitious brands like Amazon, Meta, Shopify, and Coinbase. In this episode, Alan and Amrita discuss her journey from developer to Marketing VP, the moves that played a key role in taking Superside from $0 to $55 million in annual recurring revenue in just four years, and the importance of Design and Creative Ops in running an efficient and effective team. Superside is a fully managed design subscription company that serves marketing and creative teams to help them unbottleneck their design challenges and empower them to get creative work done in a fast and efficient manner. Unlike an agency, freelance marketplace, or internal team, Superside acts as a point solution for key problems inside a company. They optimize for efficiency, speed, and scale, which allows them to cater to companies that are pivoting and changing rapidly. Amrita says an understanding of the importance of Design and Creative Ops helps Superside be an extremely efficient and effective partner. When it comes to Superside's rapid and sustained growth, Amrita tells us they did make smart moves, but also attributes some of their good fortune to good timing. One key move was figuring out their differentiation early. With marketing, the problem is well-defined but the solutions are messy, so from the start, Superside dove deep into what their best use cases were and what value they would provide in that space. Another key move was the founder's investment in marketing from day one to intentionally "build an efficient machine" for lean operations. In this episode, you'll learn:What is the Superside use case? How Amrita took Superside from $0 to $55 million in ARR in four yearsThe benefits of a marketing-first mindsetKey Highlights: [02:05] An appreciation for "community"[07:30] Path to becoming CMO of Superside[10:20]  What is Superside?[14:00] ARR increased from $0 to $55 million in four years.[18:30] No convincing is needed when the higher-ups get marketing.[20:00] What are "moon shoots," and what is an example of a win?[28:10] The nexus of design, creativity, and operation[31:50] A crazy (and impressive) designer to design operations ratio[36:00] Being a chameleon isn't such a bad thing.[39:00] Advice for her younger self[40:05] Be aware of dilution in marketing.[42:40] Misconceptions around mass amounts of data Thank you to our sponsor:PartnerHero: to waive set-up fees, go to https://www.partnerhero.com/marketingtoday and mention “Marketing Today” during onboarding! Graduating from Georgia Tech in 1991 with Highest Honors in Electrical Engineering, Angela Fox has often been asked how she moved from such a technical education with early roles in corporate systems and strategy into a life where she is transforming companies and communities, building cultural facilities, and serving as a catalyst for change and role model for impact and meaning in every area she touches. The answer is simple. At engineering school, she learned to solve problems – the more complex the issue, the more elegant the solution. She walked away with a Co-Op student's awareness that there are many areas where a creative mind is key, that molds are meant to be broken, and that there is no situation that cannot be made better. As the CEO of the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID), she was asked to create an organization that would change the way people see, perceive, and experience Crystal City. In a very short time and at a nationally-recognized level, she did just that. From a long-standing belief that the area was a “concrete canyon” that no one would visit without an appointment to the shortlist for Amazon's HQ2, as well as winner of the International Downtown Association's Pinnacle “best of the best” award because of her strategic implementation of competitive programs, as well as her ability to engage and infuse energy into the community as a whole. People are the heart of any company, campus, culture and community, and the only way to bring about real, active, and repeatable transformation is to enlist their energy as stakeholders in the process, the progress, and the ultimate success. As a 32-year, Tesla-driving vegetarian who runs 5Ks, cycles thousands of miles every year, and practices all forms of yoga, all while being committed to her community by serving and chairing local arts boards, and she inspires people to embody the changes they seek to achieve. She is a dynamic speaker, dedicated mother, friend, and proud promoter of the philosophies and processes that she learned on the ground throughout her career. She has traveled all over the world (6 continents, 72 countries, and 47 states), worked with a Japanese Security Software firm as a C-level coach and interim Marketing VP, and run her own consulting firm providing business strategy, marketing and executive coaching services to individuals, corporations, and non-profits. She has re-introduced many people to the personal and business value of building lives that matter, to them, helping them become active contributors, board members, citizens and participants. Whether launching Verizon.net, introducing new programs at Cultural Tourism DC, or building an award-winning new theater in downtown DC, she is dedicated to her community and is honored to forever be a Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech! In this episode, Jeannette talks to Karen Gill and Maxine Benson. Two friends who created Everywoman. The first online community for women in business. An organisation that provides practical advice, support, and a strong voice for female entrepreneurs everywhere.  They explain why they set up the community and how they took it global. Delving deep into how and why they do things as they do. For example, why, initially, they ran women-only leadership workshops. They discuss how the work environment has changed, including the role men are playing in making it easier for women in the workplace.   KEY TAKEAWAYS The world has finally woken up to the benefits of diversity, which is starting to help women in business. There are a lot of female entrepreneurs in places like India and North America. Most men now have the same aspirations for their daughters as they do for their sons - that wasn't always the case. Lots of men want cultural change and increasingly want to become effective advocates. Don't focus on what the circumstances are, instead, focus on what you can do about them. Invest in yourself and get a mentor. Don't leave yourself at the bottom of the list of priorities. Networking is a critical business skill that you should use internally as well as externally. Networking is a two-way thing. You will be helping the other person as well as yourself.   BEST MOMENTS ‘We consciously surround ourselves with people that enable us to go out and serve the business.' ‘Most male CEOs have got the same aspirations for their daughter as for their sons.' ‘Utopia would be that there´s no need for diversity programmes.' ‘When you pour yourself into something, it does get personnel.'   This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANT. Keen to inspire women across the global business community Karen co-founded everywoman in 1999 and was awarded the MBE for services to women's enterprise in 2009. Maxine Benson´s MBE career experience encompassed the airline industry in Sydney, the film industry in New York, giving her two decades of experience living and working overseas before she returned to the UK to co-found everywoman in 1999. Debra Sandler is a doer. She is a perfect example of someone with high ambitions who has never forgotten her family and her roots. With over 30 years of experience in corporate America, she has now turned her focus to Bazodee, a Caribbean-inspired, natural, family-driven line of pepper sauces and marinades. Debra was born in Venezuela but grew up in Trinidad and Tobago surrounded by a large family. Speaking of her childhood, Debra describes Trinidad and Tobago as the “truest melting pot,” and she recalls celebrating a multitude of holidays and customs from many different cultures represented on the islands. She noted food and music as two of the most powerful uniting forces that bring these different cultures together as one and trigger a true sentiment of home. At age 18, Debra left Trinidad for the US, and attended Hofstra University to study international trade. After approaching Pepsi’s VP of Marketing as a college junior, she went on to spend 13 years at PepsiCo, eventually rising to Marketing VP herself. After PepsiCo, Debra worked for Johnson & Johnson and Mars, where her entrepreneurial spirit was further cultivated working on and supervising many exciting company projects. Although her corporate career is wildly successful by any measure, it was not without adversity. As a black woman in business, Debra many times found herself to be the only woman or the only person of color in the room. Emphasizing the importance of representation and listening to all voices, Debra refused to let the expectations and assumptions of others define or limit her. Sparked by her desire to honor and carry on her family’s unique recipes and culinary creations, Debra created Bazodee, making her Aunt Mavis’ sauces and marinades commercial-ready to share with all. A true family business, Debra, her Aunt, daughter, and fiance are all directly involved with Bazodee’s operations. From their traditional Trinidadian Curry to their Soca pepper sauce, flavorful Marinade, and sweet Tamarind sauce, Bazodee offers a truly unique and special line of sauces, as well as a perfect avenue for Debra to continue and share her family’s cooking. When Craig Rowley moved over to REI after 25 years on the agency side at creative shops like Carmichael Lynch, Borders Perrin Norrander, and Saatchi & Saatchi, he was already pretty familiar with them — he credits classes he took at REI with helping him summit Mount Rainier. For him, REI is the perfect fit: a purpose-driven brand that isn’t all about the transaction. “Any company that taps into what people are passionate about in a brand: Is there a higher purpose that they stand for? Are they good corporate citizens? Do they treat their employees well? All these things matter,” says Rowley. He goes on to add: “There’s a tension in that. You’re kind of forcing people to make a choice or take a side. And when you do that sort of thing, I think it gets you noticed and kind of burns you into people’s souls.” Highlights from this week’s “Marketing Today” podcast include: Rowley talks about creating an agency vibe within a client culture. (3:24) Building brands today: “It’s not just about selling stuff.” (5:28) Purpose-built branding: “It’s not for the faint of heart.” (8:09) Rowley’s take on the experience economy: “People are moving away from buying stuff to buying experiences.” (18:51) “Any brand can have a purpose that is meaningful and matters.” (24:39) How brands win: Sharing values to create customer loyalty. Kathleen is one of those people. At the age of 34 she quit her corporate career, sold or gave away all of her possessions except for a really expensive chair, and moved to the British Virgin Islands to manage a dive shop and be a full-time SCUBA instructor. The first two months were a dream. She was on an island not worrying about email or corporate meetings and thought that she had figured out the perfect life. "We thought we were going to die." I Want Her Job

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 2, 2016 37:01

Many of us feel like we hit the lottery when we land our dream job. But today’s podcast guest has held a handful of dream jobs for some majorly crush-worthy companies. The last time we featured Rachel Hofstetter on I Want Her Job, her book about foodie entrepreneurs, Cooking Up A Business, was fresh off the press and stirring up quite the media buzz. She also had just launched guesterly, a memorable approach to introducing all of the special people at your special events – from weddings to bar mitzvahs – with her husband Lorne. Then last fall, guesterly was acquired by Chatbooks, makers of “super easy $8 photo books” and Rachel became vice president of marketing for the brand. This veteran food editor of O, The Oprah Magazine also found the time to share what she learned about crafting that perfect pitch while working at the publication and launched PR School, an online course, with former Leading Lady Angela Jia Kim. In episode 16 of I Want Her Job: The Podcast, Editor Polina Selyutin speaks with Rachel about pitching a business idea, managing a startup and her work/life balance philosophy. TOPICS DISCUSSED IN TODAY'S SHOW: On Testing A Business Idea: Rachel believes in starting as small as you can, because ideas shift and change so much. That Work/Life Balance:  “You can do anything for a season of life,” Rachel says. By writing from 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. every day for eight months, this mindset was the secret that helped Rachel complete her book while still holding down a full-time job. #HashtagInspo: Rachel coined 2015 her #YearOfHustle, and used that mentality to push herself – fully knowing that she was going to work harder than she ever worked before. Her other motivation tip? This defined time period helped give her the motivation to keep going. Discover Utah: Her 2015 hashtag was so motivating that she decided to make 2016 the #YearOfUtah, which she says for her is all about loving the awesome thing about where you are. (Rachel is Utah-based these days.) She says she sees moving to another city as an opportunity to “game another world.” New York State Of Mind: Rachel’s move to New York City at age 21 had a life-changing impact. Being surrounded by the doers and creators striving to make something and find out who they wanted to be made her who she is today. She advises moving somewhere when you’re young and don’t know anyone. “It will make you dream bigger and do more things,” she says. Give, Give, Get: Those three words will alter your whole PR strategy, says Rachel. She advises those seeking more PR to think about how you can create a win-win situation when reaching out to the media. Outlets want a great story, so think about how you can stand out in a big way. After all, she says, only a handful out of the 400 pitches she’d see in a day made the inbox cut. The Stuph File Program Featuring Kristian Gravenor from Coolopolis; Arthur Anderson; & Stuart Nulman with another edition of Book Banter Download Recently news broke that an unidentified woman who is thought to have been a victim of the Manson Family murderers in L.A. back in 1969, was actually a free spirited Montrealer who went to California. While many publications are climbing over each other to bring out the story, it was Montreal journalist and blogger Kristian Gravenor who uncovered the story. A retro interview with a celebrity we've recently lost. Arthur Anderson may not have been a household name, but he certainly was a household voice. Arthur, who was 93 when he passed away on April 9th in Manhattan, performed on radio as a teenager with Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre and appeared on Broadway, in films and on television. But his most endearing role was as the voice of Lucky Charms cereal's leprechaun. He was also the author of the book Let's Pretend and the Golden Age of Radio. Let's Pretend, being a major network radio show back in the day that he was a child star on. This interview originally aired in October 2004. Stuart Nulman is on with another edition of Book Banter.  This week’s reviewed book is Out of My League: The Classic Account of an Amateur's Ordeal in Professional Baseball written by George Plimpton, (Little, Brown, $24). You can also read Stuart’s reviews in The Montreal Times.  This week's opening slate is presented by Kim Fraser, Marketing VP for the Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation.
