Treated terribly by those that were supposed to protect and love her, Sam looked to things like baptism and being “The Bible Girl” at school to escape into serving a god that she was also seeking love from. She tried desperately, even seeing herself as “Jephthah's daughter”, trying to dedicate herself to Jehovah, nearly meeting a similar fate. Ultimately the congregation would take away everything that she wanted and leave her searching for identity in a marriage that mirrored the rest of the abuse that she had suffered at the hands of others that claimed to love her as well. In a desperately haunting moment she faced the end of everything, not knowing that it would work out a new beginning for her, one that she has seized as she has fought for survival. SLOTHRUST rocks this episode of THE CITY'S BACKYARD PODCAST as we talk with lead singer/guitarist Leah Wellbaum! Slothrust — the duo composed of principal songwriter, guitar player, and unrepentant aesthete Leah Wellbaum and drummer Will Gorin — recently unveiled their brand new EP entitledI Promise, out now via Dangerbird Records.A key part of the tracklisting is the band's standout cover of Ginuwine's "Pony," on which they shamelessly wield and respect the track's raunchy nature and punch it up with a sludgy musicality, praised by outlets such as Billboard, Consequence, and Stereogum, and additionally added to the official Spotify 'Rock Covers' playlist. In addition to their new EP release, Slothrust has embarked on a tour in celebration of the 10-Year Anniversary of their release, Of Course You Do. The duo (a trio when playing live shows) is on it's second leg of the tour, with continued support from Weakened FriendsFor more on SLOTHRUST click here for tour info and more! https://www.slothrust.com

Porridge Radio - "The Rip" from the 2022 album Waterslide, Diving Board, Ladder to the Sky on Secretly Canadian. Right before the pandemic shut the world down, Brighton band Porridge Radio dropped Every Bad, their first record on Secretly Canadian that would go on to receive a Mercury Prize nomination as well as a generous amount of airplay on KEXP. While not technically the first album under the Porridge Radio moniker, it felt like an introduction to the band, who blended UK post-punk with anthemic indie rock for a uniquely cathartic sound. Last month, they released the follow-up Waterslide, Diving Board, Ladder to the Sky which broadens Porridge Radio's sound without giving up any of their defining characteristics. Our Song of the Day is “The Rip” which is led by soaring synths and roaring guitars, as the song slowly builds and bursts. Frontperson Dana Margolin had this to say about the song: “‘The Rip' was the last song to be finished for the album, and we finished it about a week before we went into the studio to record it in March 2021. We wanted it to sound like massive pop, like Charli XCX, but with the instrumentation of bands like Slothrust or Deftones. It took the longest a song has ever taken me to write lyrics for, and they took form over a few years. At the beginning it was a song about a power dynamic where I was in control, by the end it was about one where I had none. My friends always accuse me of making up idioms and using them like they are well known phrases and I think this song is full of those. I love the idea of something being sick at the seams, like it's disintegrating from its core. I like things that are so simple they are universal. I wanted it to sound like when your heart breaks so badly that your entire body aches. I wanted it to feel like your soul is dropping out of your body.” The song comes with a video directed by Margolin's sister Ella which mimics the intensity of the song with Margolin furiously running on a treadmill while menacing figures in papier-mâché masks envelope her. Watch the video at the link below and catch Porridge Radio in Seattle on Tuesday, September 13th at Barboza. sent $$$ this week to the Gender Health Center in Sacramento.genderhealthcenter.org“If you know us then you know the services we offer: mental health counseling, needle exchange, mental health respite, advocacy, and healthcare services. We do a lot for such a small organization. But there’s some things we can’t help with:Many Black transgender people come into Gender Health Center with needs like rental assistance, housing, and funds for things like medical bills and daily expenses. In so many cases, referrals are not enough. Therapy is not enough. Respite is not enough. Getting put on a waitlist is certainly not enough. We need your help to establish this fund so that we are able to say yes.Yes, we can help you with your medical bill.Yes, we can help you with gas money.Yes, we can help you make rent this month. We envision the #BlackTransPowerFund as a tool to use in situations like these and many others. We envision a future where other organizations can direct Black transgender and gender variant community members to us for direct cash aid. This fund will allow us to provide direct assistance to 18+ Black transgender and gender variant people locally. 100% of the fund will be directly distributed to folks in need via a simple application process.”DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun(intro by omar)NEUROTIC FICTION “Mediator” Pulp MusicMoon Revenge “Small” Phrases That RemainOutdoor Voices “Catalina Shredder” Catalina Shredder / LandformChronic Anxiety “Don’t Touch Me” Canopy ShynessDonors “Where Do You Live” DonorsFond Han “SQUIRRELY” WRONKEDSLOTHRUST “New Red Pants” The PactDead Tenants “Rubbed Out” LPIISharks’ Teeth “Lost in the Costco” Orlando’s BloomREPO FAM “Skip To My Lou” REPO FAMInland Island “Tip Toes” dreamtPolyester “Pink” PolyesterNew Junk City “Stay Asleep” Same PlacesDAYDREAM “Blissful Future” S/TMiya Folick “Freak Out” PremonitionsBlue Ranger “Saving a Beauty” Saving a BeautyRoyal Roads “The Wheel” Secret ThingsGirl Gaze “Suddenly” Fade OutRose Droll “Riddle” Your DogLand of Blood and Sunshine “Gigantic Heart” Lady and the TranceWume “It’s Okay” Towards the Shadow

Slothrust, an alternative rock band from Boston, shares their latest album "Parallel Timeline." They break down the inspiration behind each song and discuss the concept for the album.
Slothrust - "Once More For the Ocean," a 2021 single on Dangerbird Records. "This song felt like it was handed to me by the ocean," says Slothrust bandleader Leah Wellbaum about today's Song of the Day. The Brookline native continues: It came to me when I was sitting on some rocks and staring at one of my favorite oceans in the world, on Star Island off the coast of Rye, New Hampshire. The bass line arrived first, and then the melody and the lyrics came at the same time. I didn't have an instrument with me that week so I sang what I had into my phone notes and carried on with my day, almost forgetting about it entirely. I have a unique relationship with this song because it felt like it came through me more than from me, though I recognize that really there is no difference. It is not the easiest song to sing or explain. At times I even wondered if it might be suited for a different artist. However after sitting with it for a while I have come to the conclusion that this song was meant for me and it is about the search for a greater consciousness in times of chaos. For me that feeling of oneness often shows up when I am spending time in nature. "Once More For the Ocean" can be found on the band's fifth full-length, Parallel Timeline, out September 10th via Dangerbird Records. Tonight we open the show celebrating the 71st birthday of Kid Creole, aka August Darnell, born on this date in The Bronx in 1950. The founder of both Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band and The Coconuts, a true mischievous creative titan of the game. After the opener, we had nothing but new tunes beyond that in our first hour, with new joints from MF Robots, Paul & The Tall Trees, Brian Jackson, and so many other highly worthy candidates and friends of the program. For our 2nd hour, there was lots of good in the rock world this week, but very notable huge swings & misses by Guns n Roses, Tom Morello, and Maneskin that are such car crashes we could not help but listen to the wreckage on air. When asked what she would want people to know before ever hearing her music or making judgements about who the band is, Slothrust frontwoman Leah Wellbaum had trouble narrowing it down to one thing before settling on this answer: "I'm really happy for people to hear in the music whatever it is they need to hear in that exact moment."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On today's show, I talk to musician Leah Wellbaum. Originally from Brookline, Massachusetts, Leah's been playing music for a long time. She started out playing with blues groups in college, but it's her most recent band Slothrust that's been getting a lot of attention lately, and deservedly so. Their debut album Of Course You Do is great (maybe you heard one of their songs under the credits of the awesome FX show You're the Worst), and it's available now on Ba Da Bing Records. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter, and check out my gameshow podcast Snap Impression!
The frontwoman of riffy indie rockers Slothrust shows some very cool and truly bizarre solo recordings she made with some basic recording software and a Casio keyboard.
