Paul & Dan chat with Keith Ammann ("The Monsters Know What They're Doing") on his newest book of dungeon design principles, "How to Defend Your Lair"! In How to Defend Your Lair, gamemaster Keith Ammann pulls back the curtain on an underrated but crucial part of any tabletop roleplaying game: the theater of battle. Say goodbye to encounters in randomly generated dungeons and hello to a game in which where the fight takes place is just as important as who is doing the fighting. This book teaches you how to use real-world principles of building security and area defense to create strongholds infused with flavor, informed by narrative, and complex enough to force your players to think strategically. You'll look at the strengths and weaknesses of both defenders and potential attackers, creating spaces that are strong enough to keep out ordinary intruders…and to provide thrilling challenges to extraordinary ones. Including more than a dozen fleshed-out sample strongholds, How to Defend Your Lair is a crucial resource for any RPG gamemaster who wants to push players to think about how to solve problems before running at them head-on. Order Keith's "How to Defend Your Lair" here Wandering DMs Paul Siegel and Dan “Delta” Collins host thoughtful discussions on D&D and other TTRPGs every week. Comparing the pros and cons of every edition from the 1974 Original D&D little brown books to cutting-edge releases for 5E D&D today, we broadcast live on YouTube and Twitch so we can take viewer questions and comments on the topic of the day. Combat is such a central part of D&D 5E, but it's also a part of the game that can take forever! And not all players are down for a 4-hour fight every game session. What can the DM do to keep the fights fun for everyone, even if some players in the party want fast combat and others want to take their time and enjoy the tactics? How do you make sure you're not the one slowing combat down and killing the vibe? It's not just a D&D question, either. DM's who stumble running combat encounters can make even the fastest combat systems seem like a slog. In this episode, Thorin, Tony and Dave talk about how they run combat, from what makes a good or boring fight to how they manage their monsters, how they decide who gets attacked next, and how hard they try to kill the party. It's everything you need to know to make your RPG combats, especially in D&D 5E, as fun as they can be. 2:00 Is D&D combat unique? In any system, you need to keep it moving and know your NPC/monster abilities, so you don't bog the fight down. 6:00 What makes a combat encounter good or boring? It's about the time invested and the context. 12:00 Encounter building: How we prep our combats, whether they're planned or improvised. 16:00 An aside about our Curse of Strahd party making deals in the Amber Temple. 18:00 How you manage your monsters says a lot about how you DM. 24:00 Nothing kills combat faster than a DM trying to cast spells they've never read: Know your NPC abilities. 29:00 Treasure: Random rewards or planned gifts for every party member? 35:00 Too many easy fights are boring, but so is the party getting beat down every combat. 38:00 What do you do after initiative is rolled? 39:00 Why Call of Cthulhu combat runs much faster than D&D 5E. 45:00 Balancing what different players want from combat: Some want fights to go faster, others want to take their time and enjoy tactical combat, and new players are still figuring it out. 48:00 Players need to feel like they've accomplished something with the game, not wasted all night on one meaningless combat 50:00 Understanding players' mental ability to grasp D&D combat, their options and theater of the mind 53:00 Is theater of the mind (combat without maps) a good way to make combat run faster? 55:00 How aggressively should you try to kill the party? 61:00 Fight about 1 in 3 encounters on the NPCs' terms, not the party's 65:00 The monsters should know what they're doing (h/t Keith Ammann) and fight that way 70:00 DM Dave breaks Tony's heart by saying Strahd won't deign to wrestle Hawk Morgan 72:00 How DM Thorin decides monster tactics on the fly 74:00 Sometimes the party crates opportunities for the monsters … seize them! 76:00 When is it OK to run large, all-night combats, and how do you keep them from bogging down? (There may be no right decision.) 92:00 Final Thoughts Support this podcast

Part one was dedicated to staying organized before combat begins, that you are set up for success once the dice start falling. Part two expands on this, as Mike and Rob delve into what to do once combat begins to make it an interesting and immersive extension of the roleplaying experience, and not a dull exercise in things hitting other things until some of those things are dead. The question of how to do this is examined largely through examining the teachings of tactics guru Keith Ammann, author of the essential blog The Monsters Know What They're Doing (www.themonstersknow.com), which he has spun off into books on the subject. Check his stuff out; Keith is a great writer who knows what he's talking about, and does a great job of breaking his considerations down, so that they make sense to everybody. It's a revelation! Also, Mike and Rob get into a civil, reasonable, and spirited debate about flanking rules. Dissent and discord! Similar premises leading to separate conclusions! All this and more in Episode 5 of 19 Hits the Dragon! Check it out! Tell your friends! And remember to like, comment, and subscribe! Thinking Critically: A D&D Discussion

Jack Wain and I discuss what "ability" means within the 5e context. We take a look at what makes an effective player and how those skills are transferable to being a successful DM. We discuss ability skills and how some, such as the oft derided Animal Handling, get a bad rap through no fault of their own. This episode's Big Question is ability modifiers: big box or small box? 00:01:41 - How to determine player ability 00:08:58 - Signifiers of a good DM 00:20:40 - Ability scores 00:40:59 - Dissonance between player and character ability 00:50:36 - Improvisation in published adventures 00:55:26 - Impact of score simplification over earlier editions 01:00:30 - Big box or little box? The Book Evangelists discuss Old Man's War and Agent to the Stars by John Scalzi. Morning Chatter Marian is reviewing possible cover designs for her forthcoming book! February 2021. She's reading many many books about hygge and evaluating everything around her for its hygge qualities. Hygge is a quality of coziness and contentment, from merriam-webster.com. Lissa is thinking about possibilities for her recent Leadership Coach Intensive for fiction writing. She's reading The Monsters Know What They're Doingg: Combat Tactics for Dungeon Masters by Keith Ammann which is informing her fiction writing character development, as well as improving her ability to roleplay a half dozen kobolds simultaneously while gaming with her kids. Old Man's War by John Scalzi Agent to the Stars by John Scalzi Discussion Old Man's War was Marian's first John Scalzi book. The Goodreads blurb is the setup for the story, but it can't tell you more without ruining it. • Would you sign up and leave earth forever? • What makes us who we are? Bodies? Feelings? Experiences? Memories? Relationships? Everything else we talked about was spoilers! • What does sci fi let us talk about, themes or situations, that contemporary fiction doesn't let us talk about quite as easily or with as much page-turning entertaining fun? • Agent to the Stars was Scalzi's “practice book”. Do you think practice books are a thing? • Is Agent to the Stars like other books he has written or is Old Man's War more typical? • What are the big themes in John Scalzi books? How does he put several big societal themes and puts them in popular genre science fiction and make it so fun but leave you thinking? • What John Scalzi books are the best? (All of them.) • How does John Scalzi present himself on twitter or his blog versus his fiction? NaNoWriMo 2020 As we move into #nanoprep season, we start thinking about our potential November projects, reflect on how different and also the same all-virtual NaNoWriMo could be, and look forward to #instawrimo beginning on Instagram in September 2020. Coming Up Next episode: Marian and Lissa attempt to "Hate Read" A Moveable Feast (the 2009 edition) by Ernest Hemingway, which is to take pleasure in laughing at or criticizing according to merriam-webster.com. We will read and discuss Hemingway's life in Paris in the 1920s, discussing him personally and also learn from his writing. We remain somewhat open to being wrong about choosing this book for hate-reading, but we look forward to this experiment in how to hate-read and why you should try it.
