Carol Chiang, OTR/L, CAPS, ECHM, CHAMP, founder and CEO of Evolving Homes®, shares insights from her 25 years as an occupational therapist. As a “professional problem solver,” she helps clients create a personal advisory board to optimize their environment and quality of life. About Carol Carol Chiang is an Occupational Therapist, Aging in Place and AgeTech Expert. She is the founder of Evolving Homes® which specializes in luxury accessibility for homeowners designing their forever homes. She is the creator of Age in Place or Find a New Space®, a service which determines if moving to a new home is more cost effective than remodeling an existing home. Carol is an Aging in Place and AgeTech consultant for Toyota Research Institute, MITAgeLab, AARP and AARP AgeTech Collaborative where she teaches innovators what challenges their target markets face. She has been a speaker at numerous conferences including the Planning for Longevity Advisors Network Form at MIT, University of Florida's Parkinsons Symposium, UBS's Family Forum and the Rehab Tech Summit. She has appeared in national webinars for the National Kitchen and Bath Association, AARP and Davis Phinney Foundation. She also filmed a pilot TV show about luxury Aging in Place in 2021. Carol is a former elite athlete, missing the 1996 Olympic Team cut by 1/10th of a second. She enjoys challenges and has climbed Mt. Kilamanjaro, lived abroad as an ex-pat and speaks multiple languages including English, French, Chinese. She is very active in her community as a Rotarian and has a special interest in building multi-generational relationships between teens and older adults in programs such as the MIT AgeLab Omega. Key Takeaways Planning allows for better decision making and saves money. Start home modifications early and evolve as needs change. Construction is challenging no matter how well you plan for it. Occupational therapists look at the big picture with a focus on what is most meaningful. An example is the addition of raised planter beds if you love gardening but can't crouch down due to knee surgery. Fall prevention is not installing grab bars, it is looking at the whole person and all the pieces, including caregivers and finances. Social networks are a critical component of aging in place. Local community is vitally important for connection and support.

Join us for our special Hands and Feet update, as we take a look at what the Lord has been doing through our church this past year, and look forward to new opportunities.Reaching the Unreached in Tanzania We have an opportunity to help bring the good news of Jesus Christ to the Massai people of Tanzania in a very practical way.  Our goal is to help finish a fresh water well project in the Kirya region of Massai country, near Kilamanjaro, Tanzania. There is a newly planted church in Kirya and a pastor and his family now serves the people of this region.  The well will change things radically for the Massai, as they now drink diseased water from a nearby river which causes the men, women, and children to suffer from many water-born diseases. Easily accessible and clean drinking water, drawn from church's property,  will allow many opportunities for the gospel to change the lives of these precious people. Also, we have an opportunity to help purchase adjoining property for an expanded presence in that area that will include a secondary school where children will not only be educated, but also trained to work the land and given life skills. Our goal is to raise $2500 for the purchase of the land, and $5000 for the well.Reaching the Less Fortunate in East Tennessee Our annual Kids First Daycare/Stockings of Love outreach will help buy gifts and materials for needy families in the East Tennessee region. This year our ministry will include: families at the Knoxville Burundi Church, West Lonsdale Center of English; Briceville Elementary (107 students) and dozens of families in the mountains of Briceville. Wim Hof Breathing Method  In October of 2015 I came across a documentary that changed how I started my day. Vice did a documentary about a Daredevil named Wim Hof who, through a breathing technique, was able to do amazing things previously believed to be impossible. He ran a marathon barefoot in the Arctic Circle, another marathon in extreme heat, he climbed Mt Kilamanjaro in shorts and even went up Everest in a pair of shorts. He set world records for swims under frozen lakes, he stayed in ice up to his neck longer than anyone to set a World Record. He was also able to influence his autonomic immune system in a laboratory environment to astound the scientific community. What was the most impressive to me, though, was that he claimed that he could teach these methods to anyone and that anyone could do what he has done. Strong claim…but he proved it by takin untrained people right up Kilamanjaro and teaching a group of people to alter their autonomic immune system in a lab just as he had done. I was intrigued, so I tried it and I felt changes immediately. I have started every day with this protocol since.  Do not take my word for it. Here are some videos for you to see all this for yourself: Vice Documentary on The Ice Man https://youtu.be/VaMjhwFE1Zw Wim Hof doing the WM Method himself https://youtu.be/nzCaZQqAs9I Wim Hof on Joe Rogan 1 https://youtu.be/Np0jGp6442A Wim Hof on Joe Rogan 2 https://youtu.be/H2NtdOKn630 Wim Hof teaching Lewis Howes to do the Wim Hof Method https://youtu.be/RW1C_3OXhEs Learn more about your ad choices. Kristin Anderson has already fought cancer in more ways than one. She's a cancer survivor whose battle with breast cancer started when she was just 28 years old and pursuing a doctorate in immunology. And as a researcher at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, she's investigating ways to use our body's own immune system to attack solid tumors. But Anderson has a new plan to fight the disease. She's climbing Mount Kilimanjaro as part of a fundraising effort that has raised $1.4 million and drawn 28 climbers, several of whom are biotech executives and investors. The effort is led by Luke Timmerman, a veteran biotech journalist and founder of the Timmerman Report. Timmerman previously climbed Mount Everest in a similar effort and raised $340,000 in donations for Seattle’s Fred Hutch. Timmerman picked Kilimanjaro with the idea that he could raise far more money with a group of climbers than he could on his own. That thesis bore out, and the group easily beat their $1 million goal. The money will go to supporting some of the most high risk, high reward research at Fred Hutch. To support Anderson and the other climbers, you can get all the details at Climb to Fight Cancer. On the latest episode of the GeekWire Health Tech podcast, Anderson talks about how her own fight with breast cancer led her to pursue a career in cancer research — and her plan for conquering Mount Kilimanjaro.

If given the opportunity, would you climb Mt. Kilamanjaro in nothing but your shorts and sneakers? Would you trust a stuntman-turned-breathing guru with you life? On this week's Yoga Talk Show, you'll meet a guy who did just that—and survived to write a book about it. The guy is Scott Carney, and his teacher is former YTS guest, Wim Hof. This is a wild and somewhat reckless tale, but it'll inspire you to push the limits of your own comfort zone, your imagined physical limitations, and perhaps live a more inspired life. ------------ Listen & Learn: How Wim Hof breathing is very similar to the drug, Diamox, used by high altitude climbers to speed up respiration  Why we've become too comfortable, too spoiled, and too numb to the world around us How cold exposure and controlled hyperventilation (used intelligently) can be a powerful part of a healing regime  How our guest managed to summit Kilamanjaro in nothing but sneakers and a pair of shorts ABOUT OUR GUEST Scott Carney is an investigative journalist and anthropologist. He is a senior fellow at the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism and a Scripps Fellow at the Center for Environmental Journalism in Boulder, Colorado. What Doesn't Kill Us is his most recent book; other works include The Red Market and A Death on Diamond Mountain. Scott was a contributing editor at Wired for five years and his writing also appears in Mother Jones, Men's Journal, Playboy, Foreign Policy, Discover, Outside and Fast Company.   Nutritional Tip of the Week: Cook vs Raw Links & References from the Show: Rhonda Patrick on cold therapy Bohr Effect (acid/alkaline of the blood) Scott's Site What Doesn't Kill Us (book)  Got Questions? “I do not fear death, I fear not to live fully.”Wim “The Iceman” HofToday's guest will challenge everything you thought you knew about human potential and leave you with one indelible, ineradicable truth:We are all sitting atop vast reservoirs of untapped, almost superhuman capabilities.Meet Wim Hof, aka The Iceman.A Dutch-born world record holder, adventurer, daredevil and human guinea pig, The Iceman is best known for his preternatural ability to withstand extreme cold. Perhaps more significant and compelling is his experimentation and experience with specific and teachable breathing techniques. Rooted in the ancient yogic tradition of pranayama and canonized for a modern audience as The Wim Hof Method, Wim asserts that he can “turn his own thermostat up” and consciously activate his sympathetic nervous system by using his mind through yoga. This may sound far-fetched. But get a grip on some of the crazy things this holder of more than 20 world records has accomplished:* shirtless adorned in nothing but shorts, Wim scaled above death zone altitude (22,000 ft) on Mount Everest;* barefoot, shirtless and again in nothing but shorts, Wim completed a full marathon above the polar circle in Finland;* he summited Kilimanjaro in less than 2 days, again in nothing but shorts;* above the polar circle, he swam a world record 66 meters under a meter of ice;* he can sit in an ice bath for almost 2 hours; and* in 2011, he ran a full marathon in the Namib Desert without waterBut there's more.Under doctor supervision, In 2011 Wim voluntarily allowed himself to be injected with a poisonous E. coli endotoxin certain to make any human being very ill. The idea was to demonstrate that by using his meditation and breathing techniques he could effectively control his autonomic immune system response and nullify any deleterious health implications.Wim did not get sick.Beyond his countless feats of incredulity, he’s a long-time vegetarian who — for the last 30+ years — has refrained from eating any food before 6pm.All of this is seemingly insane. But Wim is hardly a carnival sideshow act — the physical stunts merely a means of attracting scientific community attention for purposes of study and documentation.Ask Wim and he will tell you that he is nothing special. He declares his feats replicable and his methods teachable — a curriculum that holds the potential to unlock a battery of human superpowers that extend well beyond extreme temperature tolerance to include control over a wide array of sympathetic nervous system and metabolic ‘reptilian brain' functions previously thought to be beyond conscious manipulation.Case in point? After a mere 4 days of instruction, Wim led a group of brave, volunteering students through his endotoxin exposure experiment (again, under doctor supervision and scientific observation). Not one of them got sick. And he now routinely takes groups of students – most of which you would characterize as non-athletes — up Kilamanjaro. In nothing but shorts of course. An absolutely fascinating guy with charm and charisma for miles, my conversation with Wim is less about human biology than it is about belief systems. It's an exploration of dormant biological and mental potential. It's about yoga, grief, depression, change and the nature of consciousness. And it's about the ever expanding event horizon of human potential that should push and challenge and nudge you out of your comfort zone to call into question the unnecessary limits we self-impose upon ourselves daily.Specific topics explored include:* how to awaken inner dormant ability* how to control metabolic pathways* the science behind the Wim Hof Method See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Sometimes you don't know what you're capable of doing until you do it. Sometimes your biggest obstacle is that voice in your head that tells you "you can't". This is a story about how Angela found a new passion, saved someone's life, and unintentionally silenced that voice. Angela was born and raised in Kansas. She is now Board Certified in Internal Medicine and works as a hospitalist at Meridian Park. She is athletic, a Canadian Ironman finisher, Climbed Mt. Kilamanjaro and, of course, now enjoys kayaking!
