Did you know that “Joy to the World” was not written as a Christmas carol? In its original form, it had nothing to do with Christmas. It wasn't even written to be a song.   Isaac Watts was one of the great hymn writers in church history, and nothing shows that better than the fact that he wrote one of his most famous hymns entirely by accident. In 1719, Watts published a book of poems in which each poem was based on a psalm.   One of those poems was an adaptation of Psalm 98, which Watts interpreted as a celebration of Jesus' role as King of both His church and the whole world. More than a century later, the second half of this poem was slightly adapted and set to music to give us what has become one of the most famous of all Christmas carols: Joy to the World.   Joy to the world, the Lord is come Let earth receive her King Let every heart prepare Him room And Heaven and nature sing   Instead of celebrating the birth of Christ, like most hymns, this carol is all about the triumphant return of Christ. Ponder that as you sing along at home, in the car, or in the pew at church.   Christmas is so much more than Jesus' birthday—it's the recognition by believers that Jesus was born, died for our sins, rose again...and that He will return someday to make all things right!   Let's pray.   Dear Lord Jesus, today we do celebrate your birth. We picture you with your earthly mother and father, Mary and Joseph, and we celebrate you coming into this world. Thank you for renewing our joy and reminding us that you are truly our King of Kings for all time, and you will return to make all things new. It's in your holy name that we pray, amen.

In this episode of Citizens' Climate Change, we explore the intersection between the Bible and climate change. More specifically, we discuss the Christian faith and how it inspires its followers to advocate for the planet.  Pastor Kyle Meyaard Schaap, husband, father, and self-described disciple of Jesus, is Vice President of the Evangelical Environmental Network (EEN). EEN is a ministry that educates, inspires, and mobilizes Christians in their effort to care for God's creation. Pastor Schaap is also of the book, Following Jesus in a Warming World: A Christian Call to Climate Action. It was published by Intervarsity Press, and is a memoir and theological field guide written for millennials and Gen Z believers. His message is that there is a space for Christians in the environmentalist movement.  In fact, Pastor Schaap reminds us that the Bible starts off with Genesis where God gives man authority over creation. Schaap reveals to us how his faith as a Chrisitan inspires his climate work. Jesus asked his followers to love their neighbor as themselves, and Schaap asks Christians to extend this invitation to love all things including the natural world. Even further, Pastor Schaap suggests as Christians strive to be like Jesus, they must be impatient for the Kingdom of God. He urges fellow Christians to commit to creation care. “Our hope, and God's good plans for the world, has always been more stubborn than our fear of our ability to derail them.” - Kyle Meyaard Schaap A Climate Life Verse Ruth Abraham, a member of the Citizens Climate Radio team, shares with us the Bible verse that speaks to her about creation care and our need to clean up the pollution in the world. She is inspired by the Christman hymn, Joy to the World, which was written by Isaac Watts, and a verse in Luke's Gospel.  Luke Chapter 2 verse 7  “And Mary gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” Joy to the world,/ the Lord is come Let Earth receive her King / Let every heart / prepare Him room And Heaven and nature sing And Heaven and nature sing  /(say it with me now)/ And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing But the resonating line for Ruth is / “prepare Him room.”  In light of the humble reception Jesus received when he first arrived on earth, she recommends we consider how to prepare for his second coming. For Ruth, that means cleaning the air and water that God has gifted to us. Take a Meaningful Next Step Each month we will suggest meaningful, achievable, and measurable next steps for you to consider. We recognize that action is an antidote to despair. If you are struggling with what you can do, consider one of the following next steps.  If you are a trained clergy or a lay minister, the Red Cross is actively looking for volunteers to provide spiritual support to people who experienced a disaster. Besides big regional disasters like hurricanes, tornados, and wildfires, the Red Cross also responds to local disasters like housefires. Learn about the many volunteer opportunities at RedCross.org. World Vision focuses on helping the most vulnerable children overcome poverty so they can experience the fullness of life. Inspired by their Christian faith, they help children of all backgrounds, even in the most dangerous places. Part of this work includes disaster management. As storms and floods have increased, so has the efforts of groups like World vision. They also assist during disasters caused by extreme weather and political crisis. Tony Campolo's Call to Save Creation  Resilience Corner  “Resilience is about recognizing a challenge and moving through it, so that we're a little bit stronger on the other side of it.”  Tamara Stanton, returns this episode with a new series: Resilient Climate-teering through Unexpected Climate Connections. The goal is to have you, the listener, worry less and act more.  After revealing the motivation behind the name “Climate-Teering.” Staton begins to equip us with the tools necessary to combat the inevitable challenges that come alongside climate change. She reminds us that resilient minds respond to conflict with an, “I got this,” attitude. Good News  CCR's very own intern, Lila Powell, delivers a story about various faith groups who are collaborating to advance a climate preservation mission. In 2022, Egypt hosted COP27. In attendance were several religious institutions and a wonderful demonstration of interfaith conversations in support of climate policy. In addition to committees, some faith groups have gone as far as publically divesting from fossil fuels. It is a great step forward.  For more links and full transcript, visit our full show notes

God's Love Never Quits

Thank God! He deserves your thanks. His love never quits. Thank the God of all gods, His love never quits. Thank the Lord of all lords. His love never quits (Psalm 136:1-3, The Message).   Gratitude is not natural; it certainly does not come easily for most of us. Many Christians bristle at the biblical instructions to give thanks. When I preach on a text such as “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18), the most common response is guilt. Even seasoned Christ followers tend to struggle with discontent. Is there anything to be done about this? Are there things we can do to develop, as they say, ‘an attitude of gratitude'? Can we Christians move from disgruntlement to thanksgiving? The answer is yes. Nothing happens in the Christian life without the movement of the Holy Spirit, so prayer for the Spirit's working is the place to start. And the first aid of the Holy Spirit is the Word of God. A text such Psalm 136 is a place the Spirit might direct us to. We cannot be sure who originally composed this song or when. But we do know, from its language, that it was adapted by Israel's musicians for post-exilic worship. It was in those days, when Israel was greatly diminished from her glory days of David and Solomon, when she remained largely under the thumb of foreign armies, that this psalm was retooled to nurture the faith of the returned remnant worshipping in temple that looked like a hovel compared to Solomon's. This psalm encouraged Israel not to get fixated on the stuff of this earth, but rather on the goodness and love of her God. When our focus is on the things of this earth, even such things as happiness, gratitude is generally far away. North America ranks near the top of the world's wealth list but also near the top of the world's unhappiest. The Spirit and the Word draw the eyes of faith away from such things to focus on our God. The opening paragraphs of Our World Belongs to God articulate the momentum of this song for us, “As followers of Jesus Christ, living in this world-which some seek to control, and others view with despair-we declare with joy and trust: Our world belongs to God! From the beginning, through all the crises of our times, until the kingdom fully comes, God keeps covenant forever: Our world belongs to God! God is King: Let the earth be glad! Christ is victor: his rule has begun! The Spirit is at work: creation is renewed! Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!” The psalm invites Israel to consider God's character and behaviour throughout her history. Despite Israel's propensity to neglect God, God remained faithful. Whenever Israel sinned, God came after her. Eugene Peterson's rendition of this psalm's refrain is spot on, “His love never quits.” All around us, human love quits. It quits in our marriages, in our friendships, in our neighbourhoods, in our churches; we still quit on God. The only love that has never quit is Gods. Even though God sent Israel into exile, he followed her. And he brought her back. Initially, he liberated her from Egypt, then he rescued her from Babylon. Like wise, he comes to us in our sin and redeems us through the sacrifice of Christ on the cross.  “This is how God showed his love for us: God sent his only Son into the world so we might live through him. This is the kind of love we are talking about—not that we once upon a time loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to clear away our sins and the damage they've done to our relationship with God” (1 John 4:10-11 The Message). Every Passover, the Jewish people use this psalm to retell the story of their salvation. God heard the Israelites' cries for deliverance from servitude to the Egyptians and brought them into the Promised Land. By remembering God's provision of salvation, the Israelites were reminded of his enduring love. Jesus saves us from our servitude to sin; he is our Passover lamb. We have not yet entered our promised land, the new heavens and earth, but by faith we believe that God is even now, preparing it for us. It is this faith, in God's redeeming work in Christ, which will be completed when he returns, it is this faith which causes gratitude to well up in our hearts. Seeing what we have in Christ is the way to thanksgiving.

E21 Cash is King - Let's discuss “Cash Flow or what is commonly referred to as Working Capital is the heart of any business,” “Without it, a business cannot survive. As a small business owner, which includes coaching, consulting business even solopreneurs, the survival of your business depends on the way your money moves. Understanding how cash flows in and out of your business give you the power to grow strategically. But once your cash flow dries up, it's tough to dig yourself out of the hole, and it inevitably impacts all aspects of your business. What is cash flow? Cash flow measures the net amount of monetary assets coming into and going out of a business over a set period. It shows the financial health by showing how much liquid cash a business has on hand. A healthy cash flow indicates that a business is in good financial health and can meet its short-term obligations. A business with poor cash flow may find it difficult to pay its bills on time or may even resort to borrowing money to keep afloat. For coaches and consultants, understanding cash flow is imperative to the success of their business. cash flow allows you to reinvest in your business, hire help, and scale your business to new heights. To improve your cash flow: - Keep track of their income and expenses - Maintain a healthy balance between their income and expenses - Understand all aspects of their finances - Make sound financial decisions for their business and themselves.

The Return of the King Revelation is the Bible's last book. Every book has to end somehow, and I have come to understand that this was the best way for God to end the Bible… Read Revelation 1:1-8 The Return of the King Let's Pray! Verse 1 lets us know that The Book of Revelation is first and foremost an indispensable source for rounding out the Biblical portrait of Jesus! Revelation is BOTH an unveiling ABOUT the person of Jesus Christ and an unveiling of events BY Jesus Christ. Now because the word apokalysis occurs in 1:1, some say that tells us that Revelation is primarily an apocalyptic book. Even though Revelation has some similarities with apocalyptic language, like symbols and interesting images, the book itself claims to be much more. So that the genuineness of your faith – more valuable than gold, which perishes though refined by fire – may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. -I Peter 1:7 You do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. -I Corinthians 1:7 To the best of my knowledge, no scholars say that either of those letters is an apocalyptic book based on those verses! I believe Revelation is much more of a prophetic book than it is an apocalyptic book. But from verse four we also learn it is a letter to churches. John wrote exactly 50 chapters of the Bible! Now when you read the Bible there is always a first audience and then subsequent audiences, including all of us! The number 7 symbolically represents completion, fullness, perfection! So together the 7 churches give us a complete portrait of the church. In verse 3 we get a unique promise: you'll be blessed if you do three things with The Book of Revelation: read it, hear it, keep it! Unlike chronos, which is more focused on chronological time, kairos is time as significant events. -Mounce, 732 In verses 4 & 5 we get a greeting from the Triune God! Isaiah spoke of the sevenfold attributes of the Spirit in Isaiah 11:2-3. Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Might, Knowledge, Piety, & Fear of the Lord. Verse 5 gives us three titles for Jesus: Jesus is the faithful witness! Jesus is the firstborn from the dead! Jesus is the ruler of the kings of the earth! Verse 6 reminds us of three things Jesus has done for believers: Jesus loves us! Jesus freed us! Jesus “kinged” us! “Jesus, thank you that you love me, that you have freed me, and that you have ‘kinged' me! To you be the glory today and forever!” Verse 7 is the theme of the book: The return of the King! There is not a single specific quotation from the Old Testament in the Revelation, but over 260 of the 404 verses contain allusions to over 550 Old Testament references. These are the days people try to take or leave Jesus – but on that day everyone who did not turn to Him in faith will mourn over the many ways they rejected God's revelation in their lives. Verses 7 & 8 tell us the return of the King is certain! The certain return of the King should motivate us be ready for Him! Get ready, church, the boss may come today! Get ready, church, the boss may come today!

There are three Kings in the history of the blues. There's the fairly well known B.B. King, the lesser known but influential Albert King (most well known for his song/album "Born Under a Bad Sign"), and then there's Freddie King: the "Texas Cannonball", who influenced his own group of electric blues musicians to include some of their Texas sound. In the 1950s, the blues had some considerable growth, with blues guitarists moving out of the Delta blues scene and into the Chicago blues scene and changing some conventions of the genre along the way. But by 1961, rock 'n' roll music had taken off in popularity and made a lot of [white] people money, starting to overshadow the blues that had created it, leaving behind many blues legends. However, the blues was far from dead. In the 1960s a lot of US music was being exported all over the world, not unlike K-Pop from South Korea. It was at this time that American blues was becoming more fully appreciated in Japan and Europe, resulting in the "British Invasion" of rock music, where blues had once again completely reshaped popular music. One of the essential albums for any 1960s electric guitarist was "Let's Hide Away and Dance Away," by Freddie King. With it his guitar talent is on full display, being an instrumental album and you can hear the impact he has on music for years to come. Today with Brad, Jon, and Jake Foster. 245: Frank King – Let’s Talk Suicide Prevention with

Chasing Dreams with Aimee J.

TRIGGER WARNING: Topics covered may elicit strong emotions.  Suicide is a large and growing public health problem and it has been for a while. But with COVID-19, the numbers have seen a large spike. According to the World Health Organization, almost 800,000 people in the world die by suicide every year. “For each suicide, there are more than 20 suicide attempts. Suicide and attempts have a huge ripple effect on families, friends, communities, and societies.” But there is something that we can all do to prevent this public health problem.  Our guest for today is mental health comedian, Frank King. Frank was a writer for The Tonight Show for 20 years. He’s fought a lifetime battle with Major Depressive Disorder and Chronic Suicidality, turning that long dark journey of the soul into 6 TEDx Talks to help others. For Frank, suicide is not a new topic. Depression and suicide run in his family. He’s thought about killing himself more times than he can count. But with help, he was able to overcome this health problem and uses his life lessons to start the conversation giving people permission to give voice to their feelings and experiences surrounding depression and suicide. He believes that where there is humor there is hope, where there is laughter there is life, nobody dies laughing. The right person, at the right time, with the right information, can save a life.  Mental health is an important topic and these are conversations we need to have more and more. Let’s start the conversation.  FRANK’S JOURNEY Frank’s career began as an insurance agent. But a few years into his career, he felt that this was not his calling. He then ventured out as a comedian. He knew that he would not have anything to lose if this new career path didn't work out.  But fortunately, it did. For 2,629 nights non-stop he and his then girlfriend hit the road moving from one comedy bar to another. From the “Comedy Condo” to the corporate side of comedy. A few years into his career, his business suddenly started facing bankruptcy, and that’s where he learned what the barrel of his gun tasted like.   But, spoiler alert - he didn’t pull the trigger. Frank used his experiences to start the conversation about suicide and mental health.  WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH COMEDY? Who would you rather listen to for 45 minutes about mental health? A clinician or a comedian?  Mental health comedy is not joking about mental health and suicide but funny personal anecdotes. They call it comic relief for a reason. Frank’s love for speaking and comedy mixed with his yearning to teach others about the importance of mental health is how his career as a mental health comedian began. In January 1, 2018, he decided that he would be a suicide prevention speaker. With his family history in generational depression and suicide (from his grandmother, to his aunt, to his mother), he knew that the topic for his keynote picked him - suicide prevention. He then began speaking about suicide prevention and spreading the important message around it.  WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT SUICIDE? “You can be surrounded by love but the mind can be a lonely place at times”.  Suicide is on the rise in the United States, but people still don’t know quite how to talk about it. Although suicide awareness and mental health have come a long way, there is still so much stigma around them, which can make it difficult to talk about for those affected.   According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2018/06/more-americans-are-dying-from-suicide/562406/ (suicide has risen by 30 percent in the United States between 1999 and 2016). It can be hard to think about suicide — much less talk about it. Many people shy away from the subject. They fear they might say the wrong thing. Those who have never experienced suicidal thoughts may even find it impossible to understand. And suicide definitely

Did you know that “Joy to the World” was not written as a Christmas carol? In its original form, it had nothing to do with Christmas. It wasn’t even written to be a song.   Isaac Watts was one of the great hymn writers in church history, and nothing shows that better than the fact that he wrote one of his most famous hymns entirely by accident. In 1719, Watts published a book of poems in which each poem was based on a psalm.   One of those poems was an adaptation of Psalm 98, which Watts interpreted as a celebration of Jesus’ role as King of both His church and the whole world. More than a century later, the second half of this poem was slightly adapted and set to music to give us what has become one of the most famous of all Christmas carols:   Joy to the world, the Lord is come Let earth receive her King Let every heart prepare Him room And Heaven and nature sing   Instead of celebrating the birth of Christ, like most hymns, this carol is all about the triumphant return of Christ. Ponder that as you sing along at home, in the car, or the pew at church.   Christmas is so much more than Jesus’ birthday — it’s the recognition by believers that Jesus was born, died on the cross for our sins, rose again...and He will return someday to take us home to Heaven!   Let’s pray.   Dear Lord Jesus, today we celebrate your birthday! We picture you with your earthly mother and father, Mary and Joseph, and celebrate your birth. Thank you for renewing our joy and reminding us you are truly our King of Kings for all time, and you will return to take us home with you. Amen.

Psalm 98: 4-6Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;     break forth into joyous song and sing praises. Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,     with the lyre and the sound of melody. With trumpets and the sound of the horn     make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord. //Joy to the world; the Lord is come; let earth receive her King:Let every heart prepare him room, and heaven and nature sing.-Isaac Watts//The subtle power of this song is that forces me to confront the reality that I am perfectly content singing joy to my world, or maybe even our world, so long as I like the people around me. But joy to the world? It’s easy to say that you want the best for everyone but then you celebrate and smile when your enemies find themselves under investigation from special council. It’s easy to say that God loves everyone without confronting the reality that we rarely do the same. It’s easy to sing a song you probably memorized as a child without stopping to think about what it is actually inviting you to do: Joy to the world. The whole world.
