Tonight we're chatting with Nick Roth, writer and co-director of the bloody horror comedy Hanky Panky, which just came out on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and Google Play, and which Kristy Puchko of Mashable recently called a "gleefully absurd avalanche of silliness," and which a random person on Letterboxd described as "an extremely dumb movie that I enjoyed immensely." WELCOME, one and all, to the long-awaited premiere of season 4! Today, your good ol' host, Shift Orion, is joined by Nick Roth and Lindsey Haun. Shift and Nick met while wandering around in the howling abyss of social media. Nick was looking for podcasts to talk about his new movie, Hanky Panky, and Shift was looking for inspiration to reboot this show. So Nick hailed Lindsey to join Shift for a chat about this fantastic, whacky, elevated, innovative film made with love under crazy conditions. And they also talk about other things like Nick and Lindsey's kids, Nick's upcoming haunted dreidel film, Lindsey's dark and vague works in progress, and Shift's upcoming sci-fi about an average white American man who gets knocked up by an alien parasite just after landing his dream job and has flashbacks to that one time he tried to convince his teenage girlfriend to not have an abortion.  We hope you enjoy this episode and then go watch Hanky Panky on Tubi! Special thanks to Gina Mangiaracinage for hooking it up with the functioning Internet that carried this episode to your ear holes while my Internet was not working. Nick & Lindsey, Co-Directors:  Hanky Panky marks the feature debut of frequent collaborators and future Hollywood power couple Nick and Lindsey. Lindsey is a gold-record winning singer/songwriter, an actor and horror icon (Village of the Damned, Trueblood, Shrooms, Color of Friendship), and a director of several award-winning short films and music videos. She is repped by Bohemia Group. Nick is a former middle-school substitute Latin teacher, current pun factory, and film and television writer who most recently wrote on ABC sitcom American Housewife. He is repped by Zero Gravity.   About HANKY PANKY  Logline: A man and his talking handkerchief save the world from an evil top-hat, and also learn to love. Genre: Puppets and Blood. Runtime: 86 minutes, 4 of which is a fight scene between a napkin and a hat. Full Synopsis: When sweet and quirky ayahuasca marriage counselor Diane mistakenly invites the wrong “Sam” to a retreat she's co-hosting with friends and family at an isolated snowy mountain cabin, instead of her best friend's sister Samantha showing up, she gets Sam, a socially anxious oddball who has brought his best friend, Woody, a foul-mouthed talking handkerchief Sam believes only he can hear, and who is sexually aroused by cleaning up messes. Diane is Sam's opposite, but it's love at first sight. The only thing that stands between them is that right away everyone in the cabin starts being mysteriously murdered, and the whole vacation quickly descends into a zany pandemonium of cults, psychedelics, aliens, and, as Woody himself puts it, delicious chaos. Short Synopsis: A socially anxious oddball and his best friend, a foul-mouthed talking handkerchief who is sexually aroused by cleaning up messes, must confront an inter-dimensional evil in order to save the world and find true love. We shot Hanky Panky in Lindsey's dad's cabin in the mountains above Heber, Utah, where the entire cast and crew crammed together, at 8,000ft of elevation, during the most intense blizzard ever recorded there. It was a true anarcho-communist-guerilla production: literally no budget, nobody got paid, everyone chipped in for food and drugs, and we all cooperatively own the film now. We shot it on a camera our team won with a short film at Slamdance in 2015. A friend who shoots porn let us borrow his lights. By far our biggest expense was that Lindsey backed her car into Nick's in the blizzard and knocked out a headlight, so that did cost us like $900 to fix. It was crazy. Everyone went a little bit crazy. Some of us went a lot a bit crazy. It's our hope that a bunch of that fun, contagious craziness has ended up on the screen. How a riot in Manhattan reconfigured a New York exploitation classic – and American politics for half a century. John G. Avildsen's 1970 New York drama was originally titled The Gap, dramatizing the white-hot topic of the generation gap through the story of a white-collar businessman searching for his hippie daughter in New York's seedy youth underbelly. But when it came out in that summer, its ad campaign focused on the supporting character of a loudmouth, bigoted hardhat, and it had also been retitled after that character: Joe. In this episode, we'll look at how the May 1970 “Hardhat Riot” in downtown New York City prompted not only that change, but a shift in electoral norms and party politics that continues to this day. And we'll look at Milos Forman's Taking Off, released the following year, which told a similar story of well-to-do parents searching for their hippie daughter in Gotham, but in a very different way (and with a very different outcome). Our guests are author and historians Jefferson Cowie and Derek Nystrom, filmmaker Larry Karaszweski, and film writers Kristy Puchko and Zach Vasquez.

As James pursues the young Bella through a mind-melting fantasia of dreamscapes, he uncovers some unsettling conspiracies infiltrating our subconscious. Hey, folks! It's time for a brand-new episode of Mousterpiece Cinema, and this is a very special and unexpected one. If it was a normal week, Josh and Scott would be sitting down to talk about a film, but oh no! Scott came down with a nasty cold that destroyed his voice, so what is Josh to do? Instead of soldiering on by himself, Josh invites friends of the show Kristy Puchko of Pajiba and Bilge Ebiri of Vulture to talk with him about the 1999 teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You. As this film hits its 20th anniversary, how well does it hold up? Does the Shakespearean adaptation work well in 2019? Are Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles as charming now as they were back in the day? And what the hell is the failed sequel 10 Things I Hate About Life? Listen to the new show to find out!

This week we discuss the fact that Kensington Palace revealed that trolls are targeting both duchesses, the ridiculous rumors that Duchess Meghan isn’t really pregnant and the beautiful angel-faced male dancer, Pepe, whom Celine Dion calls her best friend. We also talk about the horrific hate crime against Jussie Smollet, and how hard it can be to cover those kinds of stories. We cover the SAG Awards and our Oscar predictions and we review A Star is Born, which we don’t think is Oscar-worthy, and The Wife, which we both loved and hope Glenn Close finally receives an Oscar for.  (While I don’t think we have any spoilers for those movies, we do discuss the characters and some scenes in ASIB.) We also have a special feature with spoiler-free comments from Kristy Puchko at Pajiba about her love for the movie Serenity. I saw Serenity over the weekend and I absolutely loved it! I got some fellow movie-goers to talk to me about it afterwards and one awesome lady said she was happy to see Matthew McConaughey’s butt. Our user questions this week are about the celebrity couples we love and would hate to see break up and the celebrity couples we miss covering. We end with our weekly feature, the comment of the week. That's because, as you have already guessed, we're revisiting the 1964 classic Mary Poppins on this week's show. Scott and Josh are joined by special return guest Kristy Puchko of Pajiba to talk about all things Poppins, from the beloved music (and some of its darker elements) to the performances from Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, to which of the segments is equivalent to a scene from Singin' In The Rain, to whether or not the idea of a sequel 50-plus years later is a good idea considering how charming this movie is. We land on a long conversation about A Star Is Born, talking about elements both good and bad and the differences between festival audiences and audiences at large.  Then we move into talk about the year of 'skater' movies including Skate Kitchen, Mid90s and how much we both love Minding the Gap, how great Hereditary is (and what it's like to sit next to Kristy at a movie) and that Toni Collette should be a real Oscar contender.  We also talk at length about stories with female and queer perspective including Eighth Grade and the upcoming Can You Ever Forgive Me? and the fantastic performances from Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant.  Kristy gets super excited to talk about The Favourite, most especially the costumes (which makes sense comes from a fashion maven such as herself). Making sure we get some Oscar talk in there, we talk about the now defunct Popular Oscar category and why it was a bad idea.  This podcast runs 1h 50m with music. Your hosts are joined by Kristy Puchko of Pajiba to talk about the biggest movie from Pixar (at least at the box office). It's been 14 years since the original film--does this movie pay off on the promise of the 2004 film? Has it been too long? Is this a case where, like Finding Dory, Pixar should have left well enough alone, or is this more like Toy Story 2 or Toy Story 3? Only one way to find out--check out the new show!
