Today we have planetary scientist Dr. Pascal Lee and STEM-Talk host Dr. Ken Ford in a wide-ranging conversation about NASA's ambitions to return humans to the Moon as a stepping stone to sending astronauts to Mars. Pascal is making his third appearance on STEM-Talk. Much of his research focuses on asteroids, impact craters, and the future human exploration of Mars. Pascal and Ken have a lively discussion about the growing momentum for space exploration. Pascal is a researcher at the SETI Institute, a not-for-profit NASA program focused on searching for extraterrestrial intelligence in an effort to understand and explain the origin and nature of life in the universe. He also is the co-founder and chairman of the Mars Institute, and director of the Haughton-Mars Project at NASA Ames Research Center. Last year, Pascal received significant news coverage for his discovery of a giant volcano along with a possible sheet of buried glacier ice in the eastern part of Mars' Tharsis volcanic province. This was the first geological find of this magnitude since the other major volcanos on Mars were discovered back in the 1970s. Show notes: [00:03:06] Ken welcomes Pascal back to STEM-Talk and starts our interview by mentioning the developments in space exploration over the past few years, including civilian space missions, NASA's Artemis program which aims to send humans back to the moon, and commitments to a manned mission to Mars. Given Pascal's career in advancement of space exploration, Ken asks if Pascal is excited by these recent developments. [00:04:43] Ken explains that for a couple of decades Pascal has spent his summers visiting Devon Island in the Canadian arctic archipelago, which is the largest uninhabited land on Earth. When Pascal was last on STEM-Talk, his annual trip to Devon Island was cancelled due to COVID-19. Devon Island has unique geological characteristics that are in some ways similar to those on Mars. Since 2001, Devon Isalnd has been the home of the Haughton Mars Project (HMP). Ken asks Pascal to talk about the advances in this project since his last appearance on STEM-Talk. [00:07:59] Ken mentions that while much conversation has been centered on a human trip to Mars, a mission to return humans to the Moon and establish a permanent base is a more immediately feasible goal in the short term. Ken asks Pascal to talk about the importance and significance of such a mission. [00:12:06] On the topic of a Moon base, Ken explains that NASA's Artemis project aims to send humans to the south pole of the Moon. Pascal has written a paper on that topic titled “An Off-Polar Site Option for the NASA Artemis Space Camp.” Ken asks Pascal what he sees as the primary weakness in the south pole location. [00:20:25] Ken agrees with Pascal's perspective on sending humans to the lunar south pole, and the two discuss the problems with focusing human space exploration on romantic ideas such as “living off the land.” [00:22:24] Ken follows up on the previous questions by mentioning that in Pascal's aforementioned paper, he suggests setting up a lunar base at the floor of the Clavius crater. Ken asks Pascal to talk about Clavius and why it is a potentially good permanent location for a moon base. [00:27:56] Ken asks Pascal how confident he and the community at large is in the Sophia finding of water. [00:29:00] Ken notes that contemporary interest in human space exploration appears tied to current geopolitical issues, much like the first space race between the US and USSR. Today, interest in space travel is closely linked with relations between the US and China. Ken asks Pascal to discuss this and how he believes the US should view this current situation. [00:35:43] Ken asks Pascal what he knows about the China's current plans for a lunar mission. [00:34:36] Ken talks about a meeting at IHMC that addressed power-beaming to the lunar surface. [00:39:01] Ken notes that there is a lot of talk the...

Astronomy Daily - The Podcast: 17th September 2024Welcome to Astronomy Daily, your go-to Podcast for the latest and most exciting developments in space and Astronomy. I'm your host, Anna, and I'm thrilled to bring you another episode packed with fascinating stories from the cosmos. Today, we've got a stellar lineup of topics that span from Earth to the far reaches of our galaxy. So strap in and prepare for liftoff as we journey through the universe's latest mysteries and marvels.Highlights:- Ariane 6 Rocket Update: Europe's newest rocket, the Ariane 6, made its inaugural launch on July 9th this year. Despite a successful series of trials, the mission ended with the upper stage coasting in orbit, unable to complete its final planned maneuver. ArianeSpace has traced this issue to a fixable software fault and is committed to staging a second mission before the end of the year. This rocket, developed at an estimated cost of €4 billion, aims to maintain Europe's competitiveness in the global launch market.- James Webb Space Telescope Discovery: The James Webb Space Telescope has identified a supermassive black hole that's starving its host galaxy, nicknamed Pablo's galaxy. Located 12 billion light-years away, this galaxy is in a quenched state, expelling gas at speeds of about 1000 km/second, effectively cutting off the galaxy's fuel for star formation. This discovery is a crucial piece of evidence in understanding how galaxies evolve over cosmic time.- US-Australia Spaceport Collaboration: The recent ratification of the US-Australia Technology Safeguards Agreement (TSA) opens up new possibilities for US companies to use Australian spaceports for launches and payload returns. Australia's vast uninhabited landscapes and less congested air and sea traffic offer unique advantages for launch and reentry. This collaboration could further strengthen strategic capabilities between the two nations.- New Mars Revelations: Recent gravity data studies have uncovered dense, large-scale features beneath Mars' surface, shedding light on the planet's geological history and volcanic activity. These findings suggest that Mars might still have active internal movements. Scientists are proposing the Martian Quantum Gravity (MaQis) mission to map Mars' gravity field in unprecedented detail.- This Week's Rocket Launches: SpaceX is gearing up for two Falcon 9 missions this week. The first launch from Cape Canaveral will carry a pair of Galileo global positioning satellites, while the second from Vandenberg Space Force Base will launch another batch of Starlink satellites, pushing the number of operational Starlink satellites past the 6000 mark. Rocket Lab is also preparing for an Electron launch from New Zealand, carrying the second batch of nanosatellites for Kinéis.For more space news, be sure to visit our website at astronomydaily.io. Join us for SpaceTime Series 27 Episode 74, where we explore the latest cosmic discoveries and advancements in space exploration.First, astronomers have discovered water frost on the solar system's tallest volcanoes, including Olympus Mons on Mars. This groundbreaking find challenges existing ideas about the red planet's climate dynamics and suggests the presence of water frost near the Martian equator for the first time. The study, led by Domus Valentinus, reveals that this frost is incredibly thin, likely only 100th of a millimeter thick, and consists of at least 150,000 tons of water that cycles between the surface and the atmosphere during the cold seasons.Next, we delve into the European Space Agency's Proba-3 mission, which aims to study the sun's outer atmosphere or corona. This innovative mission involves two spacecraft flying in formation to create an artificial solar eclipse, allowing for sustained study of the sun's faint coronal atmosphere. The mission will launch aboard an Indian PSLV rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre and will demonstrate the precise positioning of two orbiting platforms. Finally, Virgin Galactic has successfully completed its final space tourism flight before a two-year pause to upgrade its fleet. The Galactic 7 mission carried two pilots and two passengers to the edge of space, marking the end of operations for VSS Unity. The company will now focus on developing its next-generation Delta-class space planes, which are expected to enter commercial operations in 2026.Follow our cosmic conversations on X @stuartgary, Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook. Mars isn't quite dead yet. A volcanic region on the planet appears to have stayed active for the past 500 million years. And it's still producing tremors in the Martian surface. Tharsis is the largest volcanic region on Mars. It consists of several giant volcanoes, including some of the largest in the entire solar system. It also includes hundreds of smaller volcanoes, plus many related features. The volcanoes began building about four billion years ago. And many of them have kept building until fairly recently. We don't see any eruptions today. But there's evidence that some of them may have erupted within the past hundred thousand years — the blink of an eye on the planetary time scale. And a recent study found that the activity may not be over yet — below the surface. Images reveal big boulder slides on the flanks of some of the volcanoes and other features — perhaps triggered by volcanic activity. And the InSight lander, which listened for marsquakes, heard activity in the region as well — including one of the most powerful quakes during its entire mission. A research team says that probably means there are still pockets of molten rock below some Tharsis volcanoes — so at least part of Mars isn't dead yet. Look for Mars high in the southwest as darkness falls. It looks like a bright orange star. A true star stands close above it: El Nath, “the butting one” — the tip of the horn of Taurus, the bull.

Our closest planetary neighbors will huddle close to each other over the next few weeks. They're low in the southeast at dawn. The brighter world is Venus, the “morning star.” It passes closer to Earth than any other planet. The other is Mars, which stays a little farther away. It's to the lower right of Venus. Both worlds could be volcanically active today, or they could have been active in the recent past. A region on Mars known as Tharsis contains several giant volcanoes. The largest is about 15 miles tall and as big as Missouri. These volcanoes may have been active within the past few million years. A recent study found that Tharsis also contains more than a thousand small volcanoes — no more than a few hundred feet tall. The youngest could be just a few million years old. Together, they may have belched as much lava as the big volcanoes. They may sit on a patch of crust that's thicker than the patch below the big volcanoes. That makes it harder to build big volcanoes, so the region produces a bunch of little ones instead. Venus is covered with many old volcanoes. The thinking has been that it's a dead world, with a single solid crust instead of separate plates like those on Earth. But a study found evidence that parts of the crust are moving in different ways. That suggests that Venus does have separate plates, but they move more slowly than those on Earth. So Venus may not be dead at all — just a little bit slow. Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

In this episode, we talk to Federico Kunze Küllmer, co-founder Evmos - EVM on Cosmos, and CEO of Tharsis HQ - EVM and blockchain interoperability. Evmos is a scalable, high-throughput PoS blockchain that is fully compatible and interoperable with Ethereum. Evmos is a sovereign blockchain built with the help of the Cosmos / Tendermint stack, which means it has the superpowers of IBC, the communication protocol allowing all connected to it, Cosmos chains to exchange data, contracts and tokens. The Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol, a.k.a. IBC; the IP layer for blockchains. IBC is currently the safest and most secure and decentralized way to move assets across different blockchains, unlocking interoperability across multiple chains. Evmos leverages the Cosmos SDK serves as the first IBC-compatible EVM-based chain, bringing composability, interoperability, and fast finality to Ethereum.

4 For, behold, the kings of the earth were assembled, they came together. 5 They saw, and so they wondered: they were troubled, they were moved. 6 Trembling took hold on them: there were the pangs as of a woman in travail. 7 Thou wilt break the ships of Tharsis with a vehement wind. 8 As we have heard, so have we also seen, in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: God has founded it for ever. Pause.
Kings from all over the world brought tribute to Solomon and asked him questions. The Queen of Sheeba was enthralled by his kingdom.
OUTER DIMENSION PREMIERE 181 Track Title: Kølpøs - Albor Tholus Album Title: Tharsis Label: @ucker_records Catalogue Number: UCKR001 Format: Vinyl, Cassette & Digital Release Date: March 29th, 2021 About the release: Kølpøs is an Argentinian artist who little by little has been tracing his own path within the music industry and who has based his evolution on a serious and forceful proposal. e is a moment in the career of a producer in which maturity is achieved and you have to make the decision to start working on his first album. That moment has come for Kølpøs, it is time to present Tharsis, an album composed of 9 tracks that contain different soundscapes from "Spectral Orbitel" with its spatial musicalisation, through the electronics of "Contemplete" and "IDISIS" to techno powerful and avant-garde as is the same "Tharsis".
