Episode 130 is with Mel Kettle, author of "The Social Association" and "Fully Connected'. TALKING POINTS Not only do you give feedback down, you give it across and you give it up as well. Giving feedback is one skill set, while how to receive feedback is just as important. When you hear the word feedback, how do you react? “Feedback” is one of those words that can be polarizing and cause panic. I encourage leaders to create a culture of conversation within their organization so that they never have to use the word feedback. How do I have a conversation with my manager who doesn't listen? If you don't have a trusted relationship with your manager, then that's going to be a difficult conversation. What do you do when you're on the receiving end of that difficult conversation? Mel Kettle has a five-step feedback framework. If you've ever given more of your time, money or energy to an area of your life than you initially intended, it's likely that you breached your own boundary or never even had a boundary in the first place. When we continue to erode our own personal boundaries, we can lose our sense of self, which in turn can make it really hard to answer the question “Who am I, and what do I like?” Today's guest had that experience of hitting totally empty and burnt out. She then went on to rediscover herself and establish better boundaries creating a more fuelled up life. In this episode I'm speaking with Mel Kettle author of Fully Connected. Everybody should strive for a meaningful and purposeful life. And if you don't know what gives you purpose over your whole life, that's completely fine. But find a reason to get out of bed tomorrow. And one of the things that I love recommending to people is go to bed thinking about something that you're going to do tomorrow. That is going to bring you joy, something that you're going to do tomorrow that is going to make you happy. And it might be a day filled with Excel spreadsheets. And my husband's an accountant. He loves Excel spreadsheets. He used to send me one every day of our financial position and I'm just like, ah, once a quarter is enough I don't share your love. But you know, maybe it's you're going out for dinner with a friend or maybe it's you're going to the beach or you know walking Chester for you. But think about what are you going to do tomorrow that's going to light you up so that you can go to bed thinking of something exciting, and you can go to bed with something to look forward to the next day. Because when we have things to look forward to and then we do them, that gives us such fulfilment and such personal satisfaction, and that makes us feel valued in our lives. And when we feel more valued, we have a better life. Mel Kettle background Mel Kettle is an internationally recognised thought leader in fully connected leadership and communication. Women in their forties and fifties are at the pinnacle of their careers. In today's episode, our guest – speaker and best selling author Mel Kettle, talks about the biggest challenges and one of the biggest reasons she believes we need to be talking more about menopause at work. A loss of confidence, or onset of anxiety can lead us to believe that we are suddenly incapable of doing our jobs. Or of getting that promotion or of applying for another job that may come with more responsibilities because of symptoms of menopause, such as brain fog, overwhelm and forgetfulness – not to mention the physical symptoms. This in turn means that organizations are losing huge opportunities to have vibrant, intelligent people doing the top jobs, and women are losing opportunities to set themselves up for the rest of their futures and their retirement by stepping away from the workplace prematurely. Research that shows there's huge portions of women who either don't go for a promotion or who request for a demotion. Or who goes from full time to part-time or some other way of reducing their hours because they don't understand what's happening or they don't believe they can cope with having a big job and menopause at the same. Mel's latest book (which I can HIGHLY recommend to every single one of you!) Fully Connected, talks about the importance of learning that our first responsibility is to care for ourselves. To make choices that are right for us, instead of what is right for others. With blurred boundaries between work and life, it can be difficult to find time for this. We've glorified being busy to become over-scheduled and over-committed and feel guilty about taking time for ourselves. Fully Connected is for women and leaders who want to take back ownership of their lives and reclaim their health and energy. On their terms. And it has BIG font, so it's easy to read! The menopause. It's not something you hear people talking about very often.Yet it affects 20% of the workforce. It's a big topic. Now, as a man, it's obviously not a topic I can discuss with any authority. But my guest, Mel Kettle, has written about this often and has a personal story on the topic.October 18th is World Menopause Day, so it seems like a good day to talk about this.In a recent article by Mel, she mentioned a report in which 83% of respondents said their work was negatively affected by menopause. “Nearly half said they considered retiring or taking a break from work when their menopausal symptoms were severe. How to reclaim your life from the hysterical demands of the modern workplace. If you feel like your job is grinding you into dust - you are not lone. An alarming percentage of us feel like our work is keeping our anxiety levels disturbingly high, keeping us from doing the things we love and spending quality time with the people we care about. Our work is knocking our lives out of shape. Sometimes it feels like we humans have taken a wrong turn somewhere along the way and we're following a path where priorities are completely out of whack - the important things are pushed to the side for the hysterical demands of the modern workplace. And often - and this is the worst bit - we accept it as just the way things are. And we struggle on. It's wrong and know it. My guest in this episode is Mel Kettle. Mel knows about a life knocked into the wrong shape as well as anyone. But she's done something about it. Her brand new book is called Fully Connected - How great leaders prioritise themselves, reclaim their energy and find joy.
In this episode, I chat with Mel Kettle, author of the book Fully Connected. Mel is a highly sought-after speaker and trainer. Her clients include leaders, teams and organisations that want to achieve real connection and sustained engagement. At the heart of everything Mel does is a commitment to self-leadership. She truly believes that we need to lead ourselves first before we can lead others. This became clear after she survived the debilitating effects of work-related loneliness, stress and burnout in her late 20s and later when she had a life-threatening melanoma in her early-40s. Talking Points How Mel came to develop stress and burnout, and it changed the course of her life. What is different about leading in the post-pandemic workplace? Why are leaders less connected? What can we do to reconnect with self and others to be a better leader? The importance of adding self-care to your diary. In this era of remote and hybrid work, the art of connection and communication has become more important than ever. This week's guest knows a thing or two about the topic. At a time when burnout is an all-too-real issue for so many business owners, Mel's advice is just what we need to hear.

About the book Are you feeling exhausted and overwhelmed?Do you feel like you have no time for yourself? Are you wondering how to regain your energy and find joy? Being a leader today is hard. We are pulled in so many directions, with big responsibilities and many livelihoods reliant on us. It may be surprising to learn that our first responsibility is to care for ourselves. To make choices that are right for us, instead of what is right for others. With blurred boundaries between work and life, it can be difficult to find time for this. We've glorified being busy to become over-scheduled and over-committed and feel guilty about taking time for ourselves. Fully Connected is for leaders who want to take back ownership of their lives and reclaim their health and energy. On their terms. When you figure out what lights you up and how to say no to what doesn't bring you joy, you become a better leader as you energise your co-workers, communicate with conviction and create a culture of belonging. In these pages Mel Kettle shares practical, simple and actionable ideas for you to increase your self-awareness, understand what motivates you and prioritise self-care so you can become a fully connected leader. Source: https://www.melkettle.com/store/p/fullyconnectedbook About the author Mel is a trusted mentor to executives and leaders and a highly sought-after speaker and trainer. Her clients include leaders, teams and organisations that want to achieve real connection and sustained engagement. At the heart of everything Mel does is a commitment to self-leadership. She has an over-arching belief that we need to lead ourselves first before we can lead others. This view came after she survived the debilitating effects of work-related loneliness, stress and burnout in her late 20s, and was reinforced when she had a life-threatening melanoma in her early-40s. Mel also brings the unique educational combination of a Master of Business (Marketing) and a Master of Public Health, making her a valuable asset to clients including IRESS, Toll, Queensland Country Bank, ANZ, the Local Government Association of Qld, Pharmacy Guild of Australia, IHC New Zealand, Arup and numerous universities and government agencies. Mel's sub-speciality is helping women and organisations better understand the impact of menopause in the workplace. She is the founder of the award-winning menopause blog, Just as Juicy (www.justasjuicy.com). She has been a frequent podcast and radio guest talking about her experience and how organisations can better support menopausal women at work. In January 2022 Mel was recognised by leadersHum as one of the Top 200 Biggest Voices in Leadership for 2022, one of only seven Australians on the list. Mel is the host of podcast This Connected Life and the author of two books: The Social Association, published in 2018; and Fully Connected, due out in June 2022. In her spare time, Mel loves to cook, go to the beach, dance around the house and read crime thrillers. Source: https://www.melkettle.com/about Big idea #1 - Connect The first section of the book is about connecting with yourself, but you need more than that to thrive. If you're struggling, talk to a trusted friend, a colleague, or a doctor to help make some plans to change and regain control. To connect with yourself you need to get back control so that you feel like you have some level of agency about what is happening to you and around you. To know when something isn't right, you need to be connected with yourself first to know what those signs of physical, emotional, and mental stress might be. Ultimately if we don't start with leading and connecting with ourselves, it's going to be very hard to lead others. Connecting with yourself is a leadership capability. It allows you to bring more energy to others rather than being an energy vampire to your team. Big idea #2 - Prioritise Another big section of the book is about becoming more self-aware, self-motivated and prioritising self-care, which are the three elements of prioritising yourself. Becoming self-aware is being present with your feelings, your fears, your wants, your needs, your values, your strengths, and your weaknesses. It's thinking about what it is that makes you tick and knowing when those things are out of whack and when to do something about them. Self-motivation isn't just forcing yourself to do all the things you should do (it's not all about the green smoothies and 5am runs on the beach). It is about creating your own luck, and when you create your luck, you're taking responsibility for what you spend your time and energy on. Self-care is more than just an occasional spa day (although these are also good), it's about looking after ourselves every single day and looking after all aspects of our health every day. Rather than waiting till there's a problem or waiting for that one big holiday to rest. All of this will look different to everyone and you need to find ways to build your habits around that. Mel gives plenty of examples of different people and their ways of finding their version of self-awareness, self-motivation and self-care. She also provides four very helpful foundation principles being aware of your health and getting regular health checks etc. getting the basics right. Eat, sleep, move, repeat. creating clear boundaries and sticking to them. doing something every day that brings you joy. Big idea #3 - If not now, when? It feels kind of twee, but we do only get one go at this life. If we're not building our habits, our resilience, our health, and generally being better connected to ourselves and with others we are going to find things much harder and much more stressful than they need to be. For leaders, this is essential and is the new expectation. We need to step up. To do that, you need to have a solid relationship with yourself in order to best role model and lead others. Small Biz Buzz hosts Crystal Heuft and Scott Martineau are joined by Mel Kettle of Mel Kettle and Associates, who is a Communication Specialist whose area of expertise is helping people connect. “I work with clients so that they can get a clear understanding of how to connect with compassion, with conviction,” said Kettle. “I help people communicate so they connect and engage with their people. Whether it’s their people, their workforce, their customers, their stakeholders, their investors, their volunteers or whoever else they need to have that strong relationship with.” She also has a podcast called This Connected Life where she discusses what’s important when it comes to connection and her audience, as well as welcoming many guests. “Probably 50% of my episodes are guest interviews where I talk to leaders about how they stay connected with their people so that they can achieve the outcomes that they want to achieve both personally and professionally,” Kettle said. Kettle believes that connecting starts with yourself. You need to have that self-connection piece and you need to be comfortable and competent with who you are and to look after yourself physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally. If you don't do that, then you're never going to present your best self as a leader to your workforce or to your client base, which is what many people forget when it comes to connection. Kettle also provides insights on what small businesses can do to connect to their audience, their family, and themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and what they should be doing to anticipate permanent changes in the workforce for the future. I asked Mel to come on the show because she was a guest on another show I host, The Pharmacy Guild of Australia’s podcast, and in my research I was struck by how much content marketing Mel creates around her business and figured she would have some great insights to share with us. Mel describes her work as “helping people be better at doing business with people by strengthening relationships”. Mel says she helps people identify who they need to have relationships with, who their stakeholders are, what the messages are they need to get out to those stakeholders, and then craft and deliver those messages. In a past life, Mel worked in a government department but was frustrated by the work and not enjoying it; in some part due to the highly political environment. Mel figured a move to part-time would help but her request was rejected - the head of HR couldn’t understand why a woman with no children would want to work part-time! That was in 2006 and, so, she resigned and she hasn’t looked back. Mel largely delivers strategy facilitation, workshops, and does lots of speaking. Mel works with CEO’s, and other senior leaders, and leadership teams, mostly in large non-profit and member-based organisations as well as organisations in the financial sector. You can find out more about Mel at www.melkettle.com or connect with her on LinkedIn here. Enjoy.
Episode thirty-seven of the Presentation Boss Podcast and we loved our interview with today's guest, Mel Kettle. We met Mel through the podcasting community and have had the pleasure of meeting up with her at a few events where she's always great fun to chat with. This episode is a wonderful conversation about communicating, the importance of connecting with others, and the possibilities that present themselves when we show up as our true selves.A quick note. For whatever reason, the audio quality in this episode is varied and lower than we generally achieve. However, Mel's insight and thoughts are super valuable and worth sharing (thankfully she speaks super clearly) so we fixed it as much as possible afterwards. We do thank you for your understanding with this grainy-er episode
The changes of greater society; changes in generations, technology, and media are reshaping the business landscape as we once knew it. Leadership styles are changing from ‘tell’ to ‘engage’, with leadership now about inspiring and becoming truly authentic and the importance of connectedness to ourselves and each other is a necessity and a key part of building high-performing teams. In this episode, we talk about connectedness and the important role it plays in leadership with Mel Kettle, Communication Strategist. Mel helps leaders, teams, and organisations become more connectable. What does it mean to connect authentically? It can sometimes be confusing as authenticity is one of those words a lot of people use – and often overuse. I think it's one of those concepts we recognise when it's really obviously there – or not there! The Cambridge English Dictionary defines it as “the quality of being real or true”. Brené Brown tells us that “authenticity is a collection of choices we have to make every day. It's about the choice to show up and be real. The choice to be honest. The choice to let our true selves be seen.” How often do we truly do this? One of the side effects of being authentic is that it helps build trust. Why is trust important? My friend Jane Anderson, in her excellent book Trusted, reminds us that trust is essential to a cohesive society. It holds cultures together and it helps maintain order. According to the Edelman Trust Barometer, the level of trust Australian place in government, industry and our leaders right now is quite low. With disruption being a constant challenge for organisations today, trust is essential if leaders are to build and maintain strong relationships with their workforce and their customers. How we can connect authentically: Be real – show your true self, whether this is as an individual or as a brand. Know your values and what you stand for and share them In 1676 Sir Isaac Newton said “If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.” We all get ideas from others. Two of my mentors, Matt Church and Peter Cook, regularly remind me that great leaders attribute their ideas with honour. And in if you're wondering, the earliest recorded reference is of this quote by 12th-century theologian John of Salisbury in his treatise on logic, Metalogicon (1159) in which he references philosopher Bernard of Chartres saying that, “we stand like dwarfs on the shoulders of giants.” And no, I've not read it, a google search told me. Which is part of my point. It's super easy these days to find the source of quotes and stories for attribution. Do what you promise – if you promise service excellence then respond to emails, tweets and Facebook and other social media mentions. Your customers expect this! Listen to your audience and be responsive – don't just talk at them. Engage with them on social media, encourage them to converse with you, acknowledge and act on criticisms – even if it's just a simple “thank you for your feedback”. Be honest about your products and services. If you're a service provider, don't accept a client if you don't have the time to do the work and do it well, if you have a product fail, let people know. In the news today I've read that The Volkswagen Group and Audi have settled two major Australian class actions relating to their global diesel emissions scandal. Friends I know who have been involved in this have said they will never trust Volkswagen again – despite it having been a trusted brand for years, and the reason they bought their VWs in the first place. If you make a mistake, OWN IT. If you don't know the answer to a question, admit it. Recently I undertook some professional development. Most of it was excellent, but the speaker came undone at the end when he opened up the floor to questions. There were two questions he obviously didn't know the answer to, but rather than admit it, or ask the room if anyone had any ideas, he tried to squeeze his IP into the answer. And it really didn't work. Unfortunately, this left a sour taste in my mouth, and significantly diminished the trust I had previously felt towards him. Don't use corporate jargon – use language your market understands. Check out Jargon Free Fridays, started by Gabrielle Dolan, which hopes to change the way we communicate in business. Ral says “We are drowning in a sea of corporate jargon, acronyms and bullet points. We are confused and bewildered by leaders who are not prepared to say it as it is and talk in a way that is more real. Every time we use jargon and acronyms we disconnect and isolate people.” Once you've had a good giggle at her jargon-filled videos, then buy her latest book, Real Communication! #notsponsored #fangirl Be consistent with your messaging – don't say one thing yet do another. I spend some time at a company that espoused integrity and trust, yet there was a rampant culture of bullying. Talk about a massive disconnect! Finally, be original – as Oscar Wilde said “Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken”. How are you showing up authentically in your business? I'd love to know. People do business with people they know, like and trust. 14% of us trust in advertising, but 90% trust peer recommendations – such as those provided by social media. Just Juicy and all thing Menopause with Blogger Mel Kettle. In her early 40’s Mel Kettle started to have some unusual symptoms that she knew had nothing to do with stress. Her journey to diagnosis of an early perimenopause sent her online and blogging about just what it is like to be a woman facing all of these things. Mel and I talk about the good, and bad, of what happens to you personally when you live through this part of your life. Everything from the joys of not having periods through to the inability to sleep every night, and all things in between. Mel has some really practical tips for hot flushes and sleeping, as well as her biggest wish… that we talk about this a lot more with the men in our lives so that they too can understand what is really going on.
