Today’s episode is about love. Specifically, it’s about finding it in your MID years. Maybe for the second, fourth, first time. This is a story about Dr Amantha Imber, an organisational psychologist who got divorced a few years ago. When Amantha knew she wanted to re-partner, she went about it with a typical approach to efficiency - going on more than 50 first dates in her first stint of online dating. Those dates had strict rules and boundaries, time limits and schedules and… they didn’t work. So then, Amantha drew up a brief and cold-called a long list of people in her circle who might know the person she was looking for…. But… well, that didn’t work either. You can learn more about Amantha and follow her work here. You can purchase Amantha's book The Health Habit here. You can also listen to her podcast, How I Work, here. THE END BITS: You can listen to our second ever episode was called the Mid Life Dating Pool Has Wee In it, and it was about Catherine Mahoney’s chaotic app-dating world and it was very very funny here. You can listen to our episode with Divorce & Separation coach, Nikki Parkinson, here. Mamamia's new podcast BIZ is rewriting the rules of work with no generic advice - just real strategies from women who've actually been there. Listen here. Share your feedback! If you're anything like me or the guests on How I Work, you want to optimise absolutely everything. But when you're after the best, sometimes ‘good enough' isn't good enough. So what do you do when you know exactly how to optimise something, but the right tool doesn't exist yet? If you're Ulrich Dempfle, you build that tool yourself! After learning about REHIT, a very short but very intense exercise protocol with astounding fitness outcomes, Ulrich knew he wanted to give it a go. But doing REHIT correctly can be difficult and even dangerous outside of a lab environment because it requires true maximum effort - the kind of effort that could throw you off a treadmill! So after trying to imitate the practice on a regular exercise bike and getting nowhere, Ulrich decided to… yes, start his own company and create an AI-powered exercise bike specifically for REHIT workouts. Ulrich explains exactly what REHIT is, why it's so effective, and how the CAROL Bike makes it accessible. Unsurprisingly, Ulrich's also a biohacker, and he shares some of his favourite tools for measuring and managing his health and fitness. Connect with Ulrich on LinkedIn or find out more about the CAROL Bike Check out the mobility moves here. *** My new book The Health Habit is out now. You can order a copy here. If you've listened to How I Work for a while, you've definitely heard me talk about the Four Day Week, and how much we love it at Inventium. But if you want to implement the practice at your own organisation, you probably have a lot of questions… Doesn't a four day week just mean longer working days? Should everyone take the same day off, or is it better to stagger? And of course, how do you know if the practice is suited to your business? In a recent virtual Ask-Me-Anything, I sat down with Inventium's Head of Consulting, Zoe Aitken, and a remote crowd of curious workers to answer all these questions and more. We cover everything from common problems and workarounds to highly specific case studies and experiments we've run at Inventium, so if you've ever wondered how the Four Day Week works, this is for you. IN EPISODE 133: It pays to work smarter, not harder -- but the biggest time savers may come through small shifts. In Episode 133, Amantha Imber shares smart tips for saving time. Drawing from the practices of top producers, Amantha explores how to conduct a "frustration audit"; why batching conserves time and focus; the time-saving benefits of seeking early-stage feedback; and why you should occasionally "kill zombies" in the workplace. We're all given the same amount of time in a day, but after listening to Amantha, you'll make the most of your time. ABOUT AMANTHA IMBER: Dr. Amantha Imber is an organizational psychologist and founder of Inventium, a behavioral science consultancy. She's been named as one of the Australian Financial Review's 100 Women of Influence and has also won the Thinkers50 Innovation Award. Amantha has worked with top companies like Google, Apple, Disney, LEGO, and Atlassian; is the host of the How I Work podcast, and is the author, most recently, of Time Wise. You value your time pretty highly, right? That's part of why you listen to How I Work - you're trying to get the most out of what precious time you have, whether it's a matter of getting more done when you're in the office, or freeing yourself from distraction when you're with your family. So you'd hope others value your time just as much - and therefore, you need to show others how much you value their time, especially if you're hoping to use some of it. This is the underlying principle in all of Janice Lintz's cold reachouts: whether she's writing a letter to the queen or trying to sort out her phone bill, Janice knows people want to protect their time. Janice Lintz is a hearing loss consultant and accessibility advocate, so when she wants to speak with someone, it's pretty damn important. But she recognises that if she's going to ask for someone else's time, she needs to demonstrate that it's worth her time, too. Enter the rule of fours. When the late, legendary activist Vernon Jordan finally answered Janice's phone call on the fourth attempt, he told her he only answered because she called so many times! Janice shares why this rule of four is so powerful, and explains how to apply the methodology to other parts of your work. In the final installment of this listeners' choice series, we go back to one of the toughest challenges facing knowledge workers today: saying no. In the internet era, there's an infinite number of opportunities, information, activities and events we could get involved with, which is great… But there's no such thing as a free lunch, and when you say “yes” to anything, you're also saying “no” to something else. So how do you decide what to say “no” to, and just as crucially, how do you say “no” when it's really hard? Whether you're a people-pleaser or you just want to do a bit of everything, turning down an opportunity - even when you know you should - can be really tough. How I Work listener Bianca was struggling with exactly this problem until she listened to bestselling author, psychologist and Wharton professor Katy Milkman describe her approach to saying no. Katy doesn't do it alone - she's gathered a group of trusted peers who know what she wants from her life and her career, and they're always on hand to offer Katy advice when she's not sure if she should say yes or no. I'm calling it: the to-do list is the most misunderstood concept in our working lives, and in productivity in general. Of course, they're super important - in fact, they're so central to our work today that even if you don't physically or digitally write one down, you've still got some version of a to-do list knocking around your noggin. So what do we all get wrong about them? Well, most of us are pretty good at knowing what we need to do, but if that was the whole game, no one would need a show like How I Work, and I wouldn't need to interview the world's leading thinkers… How I Work listener Trudi unlocked the power of a good to-do list after listening to bestselling author and New Yorker contributor Cal Newport break down his daily and weekly planning process. Cal's a verified productivity machine, so when he starts talking about how time boxing is at the core of his incredible performance, we'd all better listen up! “If you love your work, you'll never work a day in your life.” A nice sentiment, but unfortunately, completely false. My source? Me! As someone who loves my work, I can tell you that I'm not skipping through the office with a cheesy grin on my face all day, every day. So how do you learn to enjoy more of what you do? Whether you're in a job you love but you have to endure some pretty tedious admin, or you're working in a place you don't really gel with, there's gotta be a way to lean in and learn to love it more, right? Right! How I Work listener Michael has seen immense improvement in his day-to-day mood thanks to the advice of athlete, engineer and author Turia Pitt, who knows a thing or two about making the best of a bad situation. After being caught in a grassfire during an ultra-marathon, Turia almost died, and spent a gruelling two years in recovery. But along the way, she learned the incredible power of a deceptively simple reframe in her thinking: instead of saying “I have to do this”, she started saying “I GET to do this.” Connect with Turia on LinkedIn or subscribe to her musings here You can find the full interview here: Turia Pitt's Next tuesday rule, hacks for dramatically improving self-talk, and how to be useful when someone is going through a rough time *** Pre-order my new book Time Wise: www.amantha.com Connect with me on the socials: Linkedin Twitter Instagram If you're looking for more tips to improve the way you work, I write a fortnightly newsletter that contains three cool things I have discovered that help me work better, which range from interesting research findings through to gadgets I am loving.
