Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, or PMDD is a little-known and under-researched condition - a severe form of PMS. Shalene Gupta is the author of ‘The Cycle: Confronting the Pain of Periods and PMDD', a raw account of her experience with this condition. Shalene talks about the havoc it created in her life, and the difficult path to finding effective treatment. Shalene also traces PMDD's controversial route to formal recognition by the medical establishment, and talks about the implications of openly discussing conditions like PMDD in today's climate.Click the ‘Follow' button for more episodes about women's health. Carolyn Thomas was having a heart attack when an emergency room doctor diagnosed her with acid reflux and sent her home. For two weeks, she continued experiencing symptoms while attempting to live normally—all while her heart was in crisis. She tells this extraordinary story of survival, and talks about how it turned her into an advocate for women's heart health. Also in this conversation: gender bias in cardiac care, why our awareness of heart diseases is actually worse than it used to be, and specific strategies women can use to advocate for themselves in medical settings. Modern IUDs - intrauterine devices - are a safe form of contraception for most women. But this wasn't always the case. Author Chikako Takeshita traces the history and development of these devices, originally created for population control in 1960s, and talks about one IUD in particular, the Dalkon Shield, which would cause widespread harm to the women who used it, and in some cases, had lethal consequences.Click the 'Follow' button for more women's health stories.Show notes:The Global Biopolitics of the IUD: https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262547840/the-global-biopolitics-of-the-iud/Chikako Takeshita: Associate Professor at the University of California Riverside - https://profiles.ucr.edu/app/home/profile/chikakotMore information about IUDs: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/treatments/24441-intrauterine-device-iud New to Overlooked? Its understandable that Cannon doesn't get super excited about the men in her life. Lego Hair leaves much to be desired. Watch as she might shake out of her hose when they get a visit from Doctor Charles Stanley, rock star preacher! Watch as he really doesn't care while he's in their house but he definitely takes time to sign some bibles, Legend that he is. In our Dig, we look into Old Chuck Stanley and how, even though there's so much drama in SBC, he proves that you can be a rock star preacher and a giant, narcissistic loser. Like What You Hear? Feel free to throw your vote towards the much more adult sounding John Duggar for City Council! We watch as John follows in his father's uh....successful footsteps. I knew I wanted to interview Liz when she attended my astrology workshop at the Philosophical Research Society, and I kept calling on her because I'm humble enough to admit when someone knows more than me. Liz is a fine astrologer with a talent for storytelling. As a writer and filmmaker, she creates astrologer charts for her characters to give them depth. As an astrologer, she's able to convey astrological meaning without technical clutter. We get into all of that in this TALKTALKTALK. LIKE WHAT YOU HEAR? Well Diggers, we've made it to the end of season 4. It has been a long and wild season, but join us as we explore the growth we've had. We have arrived at the end of Season 4! Its been a ride with this brood. The last episode of the season is a "special" that has us watching some Duggar Child birthdays (except for one), a ridiculous amount of Pest content, and listen to Whitney and I stress out, big time due to them still planning a birthday party less than 8 hours before its supposed to start. Ugh. We are continuing our tradition of doing a "State of the Pod" episode to close out the season. Whitney will be dropping a post where you can drop us a question for our Q&A segment of the episode next week. Keep your eyes peeled for that. Like What You Hear? The Brood picks up where they left off, in Louisville for a speaking engagement at basketball arena-sized mega church. The kids play some rough violin and sing a barbershop-style hymn. Out of all of those Duggars, the hot ticket for autographs, was Soundman Jim! The Stache, himself. In our Spooky Season Dig, we went Ween. JesusWeen that is...nope, that still doesn't make it any less funny. Check out the way to rip October 31st out of Satan's hands! Be prepared, there's some pretty low hanging jokes to be shared throughout. Merp. There's no shame in my game. Like What You Hear? We watch as the brood hits the road to head to Lousiville, Kentucky for a speaking engagement. Cannon is staying back with Josie and then flying out there. By the way, were you aware that Josie spits up a lot? And that B.C. is right where she needs to be? Of Course you are, those are the only pre-determined comments that Lego Hair left her to say so we are on repeat of those items whenever she's left with her own thoughts. Don't worry Dug-girls, the dirty dishes will be waiting for you when you get back. In our Dig, we examine churches tax status, and how they manipulate it to push into the political sphere. The tax code is confusing but the strongest recourse they have is to send strongly written letters suggesting that a 501c3 organization should, maybe, try to, you know, if you want to, but you don't have to if you don't like the idea, to not try to influence others in a political sense. The only thing you need to know about the recap this week, is that Tim got Bingo! and the game is all tied up!! Okay, I'm kidding, you should also know that the official Turkey Bacon Dealer in the TTM is learning how to drive. We learn Lego Hair's deep seeded, shame that he has to point out in his children. In our Dig, we look into what actually happened in one of the IBLP Training Centers. I thought it was just a goofy place, where some culty wierdo's got together and did culty things together ( and didn't eat on Sundays). Its so much more...strap in. Like What You Hear? When you think of strong, Olympic-type swimmers, you're not thinking of them wearing jeans or a WholesomWear Swim Frock. Watch the brood enjoy some quality pool time. We see Turkey Bacon as the respect currency in the TTM. In our Dig, we sit through orientation for working for free in an IBLP culthouse. We don't have regular rules, they're like, fun rules. Meet Deborah Binun, a psychotherapist, birth educator, and author, who conducted the first piece of detailed research worldwide on primary to phobia, the pathological fear of childbirth. She's also the author of my favorite childbirth resource ever, the Missing Peace in Childbirth, which focuses on sharing the three principles. A profound psychological paradigm enabling clients to see their birth and indeed their whole life from an entirely new perspective. With this perspective comes freedom of mind and new lightheartedness toward life, A deep sense of security and serenity in the face of whatever birth may bring. In today's discussion, we dive into the nature of thought and being human, and how that manifests in pregnancy and childbirth. It was a beautiful discussion, and I'm thrilled for you all to hear it! Known for his Emmy Award winning role of Beverley Leslie on NBC's Will & Grace, Leslie was delighting audiences on FOX's hit comedy Call Me Kat before his untimely death in October 2022. Meet Lauren Bacon Smith (She/her) is 36 years old and a Northern Virginia Native currently living in Springfield, VA with her Aussie husband Lindsay, son Cameron and dog Sheila. She works full time as the Chief People Officer at a tech start up that focuses on hiring people with disabilities. Lauren is a self proclaimed birth nerd and is extremely passionate about birthing people being educated and empowered to advocate for themselves to have a positive birth experience. Today, she is joined by her Doula, Casey Runck (she/her), who began attending births in 2016 and is honored to have supported over 250 families. She was drawn to doula work because she knows there are just as many ways to be a good parent as there are to have a great birth. This belief inspires her to support families during such a special and momentous time. She lives in the Virginia suburbs with her partner, their two dogs, a cat, and many houseplants. When she's not attending births, she enjoys home projects, cooking, and entertaining for friends. In today's birth story, part 2 of a 2-episode series, Lauren and Casey continue to share her labor and birth story. When we left off, Lauren had begun having contractions at home, and they were increasing in intensity quite quickly. Lindsey, Lauren's partner, had called Casey to come and join them at their home. “We communicate in the way we learned to communicate, which means we can unlearn it,” explains host Alejandra. When Alejandra was a child, her father would tell her about a story of a scorpion who could not change his venomous ways due to his nature. Finding this story inaccurate, Alejandra shares how we can modify our behaviors in social interactions and communicate consciously. In the scorpion story, the scorpion couldn't help but sting the frog he asked for help, simply because he was a scorpion. While finding this a bleak and untrue message, Alejandra reminds the listeners that we can act differently if our habits no longer serve us. If we hear someone say something we do not like, we can choose not to react negatively or unfairly. Through self-reflection, we can understand our behavioral patterns and make helpful adjustments that lead to better results. As adults, we always have the power to change. Learn more about the truth about human nature, why we can't control others' behavior, and how to do something different if you're not getting the reactions you want. Quotes • “We don't have to go along with our personality structures or habits. If we are aware of our personalities and behavior and communication patterns, we can choose to say or do something different.” (7:49-8:05 | Alejandra) • “We communicate in the way we learned to communicate, which means we can unlearn it and learn many different new ways that can give us different results.” (8:16-8:27 | Alejandra) • “I'm not the same person I was ten or five years ago. I bet the same is true for you. I have a greater capacity to communicate and to decide How to behave. And I bet you too. And I've seen so many people I've worked with do the same people who, like the frog, trusted others who were supposed to be, quote-unquote, enemies, and they were not let down. In fact, they were supported and loved. I've also seen and worked with people who behaved like scorpions and made tremendous changes in their lives and chose not to sting others. Again, you are not the way you behave or the way you communicate. Because you like me, and all of us, you are a human adult who has choices.” (9:49-10:45 | Alejandra) • “You can learn to do or say something different. If you give yourself the gift and space to reflect on this and journal, tap into your wish to have a different outcome.” (16:31-16:45 | Alejandra) • “You are a capable, loving, and compassionate human adult who has the ability to choose.” (17:43-17:51 | Alejandra) • “You can choose to do or say something different, especially when what you've been doing no longer works for you.” (19:04-19:14 | Alejandra) Links To ask a question or request a topic, visit: languagealchemy.com/podcastquestion To found out about your greatest self-sabotaging communication habit, visit: languagealchemy.com/quiz To join the mailing list and view show notes, visit: languagealchemy.com Podcast Music composed by Gary Lapow: open.spotify.com/artist/1HlMhcNfKIELxYil5mVqDI Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm
