This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief hangs out with his great friend and sponsor, Chris Cruise, from Cruise Customs Flags. Chris tells his story of his journey from being a soldier in the 82nd Airborne to building art out of bourbon barrels. During this amazing conversation between two veterans, Chris sips on Red Breast 12 Year while Big Chief pulls out a Limestone Branch Distillery wheated bourbon single barrel pick from Doc Crow's and a New Riff Red Turkey Wheat.   Big Chief also gives some shoutouts to some new Coast Guard Chiefs and his good friend Mark Rucker, on his accomplishment of becoming a Master of Bourbon. Hey Whiskey Ringers, thanks for tuning in to another episode of the Whiskey Ring Podcast. This week's guest is Stephen Fante, National Brand Ambassador for Limestone Branch Distillery. Stephen has a fascinating back story: between being a tea sommelier (a new thing for me that I love), a childhood friend of Stephen Beam who lost touch then reconnected over the latter's distillery, and now a national brand ambassador, he is a damn interesting character.  Limestone Branch Distillery is on the newer side, but there's no denying the massive heritage behind it. The Beam family, the most prolific single family in American whiskey, is here, too, in the form of Stephen and Paul Beam, 7th generation distillers.  Then there's the connection with Yellowstone National Park. The Yellowstone brand is as old as the Park, being founded in 1872 in its honor. Though it's changed hands over the years, it is a venerable brand with a nearly continuous history. Now owned by Limestone Branch, the brand is in its new glory days - and Stephen Fante is at the front lines.  Donate to the National Parks Conservation Association Here. Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so. It's Episode 50!  The $5 tier will have access to the new, Patreon-only segment called “Under the Influencer”, where some of your favorite YouTubers/Instagrammers/Podcasters and more join me to talk about a topic that's under their skin in whiskey. This tier will also have priority access to upcoming barrel picks, including one coming up in partnership with the This is my Bourbon Podcast.  The $25 tier - for people who really want to propel the pod and website forward - will have the same benefits as the $5 tier plus right of first refusal to join me on future barrel picks, access to bottles I'm sent to taste and review, and more.  You can still support for as little as $1 a month if you'd like to stay up to date with these changes and news about what we've got coming up.  Finally, please do like and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you're listening - it really helps the Whiskey Ring Podcast move up the rankings.  If you haven't yet, please follow Whiskey in my Wedding Ring and the Whiskey Ring Podcast on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, and subscribe to the newsletter on the website.  Thanks for listening! Last week we ventured into uncharted territory as we tried an alcohol-free bourbon. We quickly found out that we have yet to develop an appreciation for that beverage category. We will eventually try another offering of that ilk but for this week's show we decided to return to the type of bourbon that does contain alcohol. The beverage we will be featuring was given to Keith as a Christmas present and we decided that there was no time like the present to uncork this gift. For this episode we will be trying the Yellowstone Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey from Limestone Branch Distillery Company. This whiskey is a handpicked blend of 4 and 7 year old bourbons from seventh-generation distillers. Limestone Branch Distillery donates a portion of the proceeds from this bourbon to the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) which is an independent, non-partisan organization devoted to nurturing our country's national parks for future generations. Sounds like something that would make Leslie Knope proud. What did we think? What do you think? Bourbon fermenters are bubbling all over the United States because of unprecedented global demand for "America's Native Spirit." September is Bourbon Heritage Month, and there's a sound argument to be made that history will remember this as one of the brightest periods ever for Bourbon. We'll look at the business fueling that growth this week with Steve Beam of Limestone Branch Distillery in Kentucky, Trey Zoeller of Jefferson's Bourbon, and Craig Johnson of Pernod Ricard USA. His colleagues have been among the most active investors in Bourbon over the last five years, including acquiring Jefferson's 18 months ago. In the news, the U.S. will open its borders for whiskey tourism starting in November, while the Heaven Hill strike continues in Kentucky. In our Behind the Label segment, we'll look at two different methods of distilling whiskey...both involve grain, of course, but that's where the similarities end.

In the first of this week's two episodes of WhiskyCast, we'll travel to Sweden to look at two of the country's whisky distilleries. Mackmyra is Sweden's oldest distillery...even though it's only 15 years old, and matures its malts in a former mine 50 metres underground. The Box Distillery has just released its second single malt four years after beginning production in a former power plant, and both releases sold out within hours at Sweden's state-run liquor monopoly. In the news, Chip Tate has accepted a buyout offer from Balcones Distillery's majority owners and has left with plans to start his own distillery in Waco, Texas, but there remains a great deal of bitterness between the two sides. We'll have more on this story in this week's bonus episode. Former Bruichladdich managing director Mark Reynier is back in the whisky business after working out a deal to buy a former Guinness brewery in Ireland and convert it into a distillery, and the Beam brothers have brought a new partner in to help grow their Limestone Branch Distillery in Kentucky.

Generations of Kentucky families made whiskey and Bourbon, but once Prohibition ended, not all of those families returned to their traditions. One branch of the Beam family is reclaiming its past at Limestone Branch Distillery near Lebanon, while the descendants of the Willett family are back making whiskey in Bardstown after three decades of watching others make whiskies for them.
