On the Hop Forward Podcast this week, we take a trip to Gritchie Brewing Company: a 'beer farm' located on the Ashcombe Estate near Shaftesbury, owned by acclaimed screenwriter, producer and director Guy Ritchie.Drawing from the land that surrounds the farm, their 20BBL brewhouse sits within rustic stone-built barns, overlooking expansive fields where their own Maris Otter barley is grown for malting and beer production. From the intimate setting of the Brewery Lodge, a secluded private tasting space reserved exclusively for invited guests, we sit down with members from the brewery, the vibrant Compton Abbas Airfield taproom and eatery, and Ritchie's London pub, Lore of the Land, before being joined by Guy Ritchie. Our discussion covers everything from the brewery's beers and the cultivation of Maris Otter barley grown on the estate, to the complexities and challenges inherent in running a brewery set in such a rural area surrounded by country pubs.  We also explore the unique dynamic of having a high-profile figure at the helm and how it influences the brewery's identity and operations.Guy Ritchie himself explains how growing up in pubs fostered his interest in storytelling and explains why believes that there's no such thing as a bad pub, only different ones, and cherishes the unique character of each one.Find out more about the brewery by visiting gritchiebrew.comTHIS WEEK'S EPISODE OF THE HOP FORWARD PODCAST IS SPONSORED BY CHARLES FARAM.Charles Faram have been sellers of hops since 1865 and hop-growers for even longer. They stock nitrogen-flushed leaf hops, T90 and T45 pellets, and, to ensure their hops remain in optimum condition, they have state-of-the-art cold stores at their sites in Worcestershire and Yakima in the USA.At charlesfaram.com brewers can shop by pay-as-you-go or using agreed credit terms for yeast, malt, fruit purees and other brewing products.  In addition to leading varieties from across the world, the Faram's Family range brings to you Archer®, Emperor®, Godiva™, Harlequin®, Jester®, Most™, Mystic™, Olicana®, and Opus® from their Hop Development Programme right here in the UK.If you would like more information or expert advice visit the brewer's resources and FAQ pages of the website or contact their technical advisors for different uses, applications and recipes. 316: Mark Hastings of Überbrew and By All Means Continues to Elevate Black IPA and American Wheat

Montana is known for its grain, and Mark Hastings of Überbrew (https://uberbrew.beer) and By All Means (https://byallmeansbeer.com) is in the thick of it. Wheat is the most-grown crop statewide while barley is third; despite their ubiquity, Hastings steered clear of Montana's brewing grains for the first two decades of his brewing career. Primarily grown for the needs of macro brewers, these grains never quite nailed the flavor and technical performance he sought. However, recent strides in equipment for craft maltsters have opened the door for higher-quality malt at a smaller scale, and he's slowly been making shifts. It's one thing to change malt in a beer with few expectations, and it's another to do that in a beer with a long medal-winning pedigree, but that's exactly what he did with the malt in Überbrew's White Noise, a American-style wheat beer that's won two silvers and two golds at the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup from 2014 through 2022. He's won a similar number of accolades for the black IPA Alpha Force Double Tap—GABF golds, bronze, silver, as well as top honors at Alpha King. In this episode, Hastings discusses: avoiding darker malt flavors in black IPA shifting base malts from Maris Otter and Golden Promise to pilsner and Vienna dialing in recipes using local craft malt building hop combos using spider plots of flavors and aromas fermenting everything from wheat to clear IPA with London Ale III avoiding the “donut effect” in hoppy beers selecting malt for grassiness in wheat beer building a stable haze And more. In the latest episode of the Hop Forward Podcast, we are thrilled to have Toby from RedWillow Brewery as our special guest. RedWillow Brewery is a small independent brewery based in Macclesfield, Cheshire, UK, that has been making exceptional beers since 2010.During our conversation, founder Toby McKenzie shares with us the story behind their renowned Heritage Porter and how they incorporate heritage malts to create unique and complex flavours.  We also dive into their approach to brewing different beer styles and how they stay true to their ethos of producing modern cask beer.We explore the importance of creativity in the brewhouse and how something has been lost in translation from the early days of the craft beer boom when people were making a wide variety of beer styles, in comparison to today where Hazy IPAs rule the roost. We also speak to Mike Benson from Crisp Malting Group at SIBA Beer X, discussing the application of their range of heritage malts.---THIS WEEK'S EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY: Crisp Malting GroupAt Crisp Malt we have lived and breathed malting since 1870. With our passion and expertise, we produce and supply the finest UK malt to the brewing and distilling industry across the globe. We combine traditional and modern malting techniques at our sites in England and Scotland to create an impressive range of malted and non-malted products, including several unique and exclusive barley malts; such as Chevallier Heritage Malt. The process of discovery is often a happy accident. In the case of Chevallier barley, a combination of an itchy toe, some good soil and a keen eye, turned a single ear of barley into a worldwide phenomenon and established the flavour of English beer for a century. It's with similar serendipity that our heritage malt range came about. Our friends at the John Innes Centre were searching for an old variety that could combat the disease, fusarium head blight and happened on Chevallier. Not only did it successfully resist this disease but the malt it produced made for a beer laced with a richness of flavour we hadn't encountered before in modern varieties. From just a handful of seeds, we have spent the past decade re-discovering the flavours of Chevallier and have been spurred on to uncover the stories and flavours of two more barleys that made brewing history, alongside our beloved Maris Otter.Visit https://crispmalt.com/our-malts/heritage to discover more!---Looking for a BRANDING, help with your MARKETING or COMMERICAL expertise?Visit hopforward.beer to find out how we can help you get ahead the brewing and beer business.Follow Hop Forward on social media at:Facebook | LinkedIn | Twitter | InstagramLike the Hop Forward Podcast...?Leave us a review and give us some stars on Apple Music.

In Sheffield, a city that boasts several renowned breweries and is arguably the cask-beer capital of the United Kingdom, is there enough space to accommodate another small, independent brewery specialising in cask-produced beer...?  Well, if Grizzly Grains Brewing is anything to go by, then we would certainly argue there is always room for one more!Sam Bennett, like many brewers, began his brewing journey from home on a nano-system that was generously donated by a fellow brewer in the city. Thus, Grizzly Grains Brewing was born! In this episode, you'll discover how Sam overcame the hurdles presented by the pandemic, secured a unit, and purchased a 5BBL brewhouse to expand his one-man operation. Not only is Sam passionate about cask beer (and putting Dark Mild into keg!), but he also keeps bees, makes Mead and brews a variety of Saisons using fruit grown and harvested - where possible - within a few miles of the brewery in Sheffield. We also talk about sausage rolls.Stay tuned to the SIBA Business Award-winning Hop Forward Podcast to also find out more from Steve and Mike at Crisp Malting Group, who discuss all things Maris Otter and what the acclaimed malt can do for your beers.THIS EPISODE IS PROUDLY SPONSORED BY CRISP MALTING GROUPAt Crisp Malt we have lived and breathed malting since 1870. Since 2015, Neptune Brewery have been brewing both traditional and modern quality beers.  In keeping with the brewery’s name - that, as you’ll hear was birthed from their parent business - the majority of their lucious beers are given water-themed names deriving from fish, the sea, and mythological creatures. Neptune Brewery are well known, highly respected and fondly regarded around these parts on more than account of their beer. Julie O’Grady and husband Les were keen homebrewers who took it pro and have gained a dedicated following since.  Julie has also been pivotal in a group of women called Ladies that Beer; an inclusive, open group for beer loving women who like drinking and learning about beer in beer and beyond. I’ve been keen to get Julie on the podcast for some time to talk about their brewing journey and the various challenges that keep them on their toes day in, day out. In this episode, we talk about everything from the history of the brewery right through to when to (and when not to) dump beer, and just about everything in between. The story of malt—from seed to field and harvesting, through the malting and kilning process, and into the tuns of brewers—is far more rich and varied than one might expect when looking at a bag of grain. In this episode, the fifth generation head of family-owned Simpsons Malt, (https://www.simpsonsmalt.co.uk) Richard Simpson, sheds light on that story, discussing malt's life cycle in depth. From the agronomic development of barley varieties to the background of popular varieties such as Golden Promise and Maris Otter, Simpson talks about what it takes to make barley varieties work (from farmer to malthouse to brewer), the ways in which they support agronomic diversity and brewing history, the impacts of specific malts in finished beers, the importance of sustaining heritage barley varieties that would otherwise fall out of favor with a purely agronomic-focused industry, and more. The malting process itself is more involved and complex than most realize—like brewing, it’s more than just pushing buttons on a machine and taking whatever comes out the other side. Simpson discusses the unique ways in which they’ve designed and built their malthouse to accomplish certain goals. He celebrates the art and craft of master maltsters as they make process decisions that depend on crop year or differences in terroir, or they blend smaller batches of specialty roast malts for greater consistency. In every brewing tradition, ingredients impact the development of beer styles, and that’s true whether the locale is Germany, Belgium, the UK, or the US. Here, Simpson talks about the ways that the unique flavors inherent in British malts have led to British beer tasting the way it does, and how brewers everywhere can use that in their own creative brewing pursuits. We’re back in record territory when it comes to new COVID-19 cases. New cases are rising in 27 states with Texas, California, Arizona, and Florida showing some the most alarming increases. The enormous Texas Medical Center in Houston reached 100% capacity yesterday. The CDC now says that more than 20 million Americans could have contracted the virus - 10 times more than the official counts.  Unlike the initial explosion of COVID-19 cases that saw older Americans accounting for most cases, younger people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s The Voice of America is now Trump Radio.  Jamaal Bowman ousts Warhawk, Eliot Engle, in the Democratic Party Primary in New York’s 16th district which spans parts of the Bronx and Westchester County. Bowman won the nomination by 25 points.  In another huge exclamation point in growing progressive power in the Democratic Party, AOC blew out her corporate-backed challenger in New York’s 14th district by 51 points. 70% v. Michelle Caruso-Cabrera’s 19%. AOC took to Twitter following her victory to say: “Wall Street CEOs, from Goldman Sachs to Blackstone, poured in millions to defeat our grassroots campaign tonight. But their money couldn’t buy a movement. Thank you #NY14, and every person who pitched in for tonight’s victory. Here’s to speaking truth to power.” Charles Booker pulls ahead of Amy McGrath in the fight for the Democratic Party nomination to challenge Mitch McConnell in the Kentucky Senate race.  In New York’s 17th district, Mondaire Jones looks to be heading to Washington after blowing out a three-way race for the Democratic Party nomination. If his twenty-point lead holds, he’ll be one of the first openly gay black men in Congress.  Tik Tok and KPop help sink Trump’s great hope of sell-out crowds in Tulsa.  Bad news for Devin Nunes. A judge rules that he can’t sue Twitter because fake cow hurt his fufus on the platform. That’s a win for Devin Nunes’s Cow and Devin Nunes’s Mom.  There’s a giant dust cloud racing across the Atlantic.  I bet none of you had that on your 2020 bingo card? And...here we go...My Little Pony fans are kicking out the white supremacists from their fan pages. Yes. That My Little Pony.  New York Times releases a damning video that reconstructs the I-676 tear gassing and toruture the Philadelphia Police unleashed on protesters on June 1st.  The Philadelphia Police Department and the City of Philadelphia’s statements on the incident were discredited the day following the event, but the city and the police department drug their feet for 24 days before apologizing and banning the use of tear gas.  Mayor Kenney and Commissioner Outlaw were hoping that an internal investigation would have kept this in the dark.   Move over Bill De Blasio, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney still thinks his political career has any relevance.  He launched a statewide PAC that are leading many to believe that he’s gearing up for a 2022 run at the Governor’s seat.  Christopher Columbus statue in Marconi Plaza in Philly is coming down because the people defending the statue caused so much bullshit attacking black lives matter protesters that the city is removing it.  In a PA Grand Jury report released yesterday slams the PA Department of Environmental Protection for failing to protect people from the effects of fracking. The grand jury said the natural gas industry should bear the expense and risk of fracking, but the DEP “did not take sufficient action in response to the fracking boom.”  PA Stands Up held its 5th The Crisis and The Opportunity Virtual Forum last night featuring Shanna Danielson, Nikil Saval, Summer Lee, Elizabeth Fiedler, and Sara Innamorato. I got to listen in to most of the discussion. It was a great space and you can watch the recording at PA Stands Up Facebook page.   The State Senate passed on Wednesday a major plan that clears the way for the restructuring of the PA State System of Higher Education. The plan will give more power to the Board of Governors and the Chancellor to consolidate schools, eliminate programs, turn existing schools into branch campuses, create new schools, and share administrative services. And speaking of PASSHE, the state-owned universities are rolling out their “return-to-campus plans” this week. Kutztown University’s COVID-19 Public Relations campaign - I mean “Fall 2020 Planning COVID-19 Response” plan - is just loaded with goodies. Students will be required to come up with their own “Safety Plan;” students working in dorms as Community Assistants will now be responsible for the “emotional wellbeing, physical health, and social support,” of students living in their newly establish “KU Family Pod Area” (can’t make this shit up); students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to report suspicious COVID-like behavior to the administration; and, the university will use the pandemic as cover to increase the use of online teaching “even after the current COVID-19 crisis has abated.”  NASA names its headquarters after Mary Jackson, the first black woman engineer. You might remember her as one the three leads in the film Hidden Figures.  I’m on to the second book in Octavia Butler’s Earthseed series: The Parable of the Talents, published in 1998. It was more than freaky that Parable of the Talents takes place during the rise of a right-wing zealot - Senator Jarret from Texas - who whips up racism and promise to “make America great again.” I mean...those exact words.  It was Father’s Day this past weekend which means I got a chance to sample some awesome beer. The highlights from Free Will included the AMAZING Wild Blueberry Cobbler Mash and of course one of my favorites, Safeword.  Free Will also came out with a new release this week: Walk Awhile With Me - English style Pub Ale brewed with a base of Maris Otter and a bit of Crystal malt, hopped with Golding and Chinook. Notes of crispy toffee, biscuit, and herbs of the earth. 4.2% ABV I was also gifted two crowler’s from McAllister Brewing Company based in North Wales - Mandated Introvert, an “IPA Sour” and Shovel Buddy, a really nice New England IPA.

It's officially summer when the BBQ grills get used (and abused) and the beers go down quick in the heat of the moment. The team tackles some grilling tips on how to make the summer cookout a little better (and safer), plus some tips on the best craft beers to sip on when your grilling up some chow. And we review a story of a homebrewer that connects his beers with Net Neutrality (from Andrea Wyrich at DailyDot) We also do some tasting of a few summer craft beers that tend to go down well when you're flipping your meat and veggies over the hot coals (...watch it!). For example, those burgers and brats will taste even better with a Southy Bitch Slap Red Ale from Pig Minds Brewing, or just as soothing would be the the Berliner Weisse from New Glarus. We also taste a sumptuous summer raspberry ale called Summerly from Pollyanna. And of course when possible, top the experience off with a homebrew - for this we had the pleasure of trying Jason Sears' Smash IPA, a smooth easy drinker and well done for a rookie brewer, we might add. SEE Session IPA recipe below. We also sample some tunes from Nashville (by way of Spokane) bluesy rock band, Too Slim and the Taildrggers, including a couple of sound clips from their newest offering called High Desert Heat. This music is sure sure to help all those grilled treats you're preparing this summer to "slide" down easy! Here's the Session IPA recipe we discussed: Malt: 5lb of Maris Otter, 1lb of Vienna, 1lb of Munich 1lb of Crystal 20, .5lb of flaked oats Hops: 1oz of Simcoe at the top of the boil () and 1oz at 5 min, then at flame out/whirlpool, 4oz Simcoe and 2oz Amarllo - no dry hop! Yeast - London Ale III (Wyeast 1318)  Mash, lauter, sparge, and boil, wait to add your Amarillo in the whirlpool after the temperature has dropped below 180F (82C), and let them steep for a solid 15 minutes to really boost the hops aromatics. Season 1, Episode 7 - This week, we’re shaking trees and drinking something old and tasty with award-winning local homebrewer, Robert French. Denise Ratfield of Pink Boots Society and Stone Brewing Co. is also along for the ride.   Fort George Brewery – Sunrise Oatmeal Pale Ale and 3-Way IPA Jason is, once again, bringing the Fort George love with these two excellent offerings, Sunrise Oatmeal Pale Ale, and 3-Way IPA, which is a collaboration between Fort George, Block 15, and Boneyard Beer. Suffice to say, we’re all becoming huge fans of Fort George. The topics of the localization of breweries and prioritized markets also come up in the discussion. Feature: Homebrew – Robert French’s “Old Bandersnatch” and “Shake Your Tree.” Robert French is a long time friend of ours, and he’s been brewing for about 18 years. Recently, he built this super-dope single tier brewing stand that’s just beautiful. But he’s not just a pretty dude, with a pretty brewing stand—he makes excellent beer, too. Robert French and His Brewing Stand Robert’s first offering is his rye whiskey barrel-aged old age called, “Old Bandersnatch.” It was aged in an eight gallon rye whiskey barrel for two weeks. This bottle has about a year or so of age on it, and it’s tasting fantastic. It won gold in the first round of the National Homebrew Competition in San Diego, and it completely deserves it. This beer is also a testament to the wonderful grain that is Maris Otter. It’s silky, smooth, and has just the right amount of sweetness with a wonderful texture. Robert French – Shake Your Tree His second offering is a beer that he made for his daughter’s wedding, called “Shake Your Tree.” It’s a peach saison that was fermented with White Labs’ WLP670 American Farmhouse Blend. Whole, puréed peaches were added to the fermentor. This beer is about a year old and the peaches still shine through wonderfully and are complimented perfectly by the brettanomyces yeast present in the beer. Feature: “Going In Blind.” Going In Blind – Green Flash White IPA and St. Feuillien Saison Sara‘s back and pouring the brews for another round of “Going In Blind,” but this time, she’s pouring some beers that Yvonne purchased. To be honest, both of these beers were zingers for all of us, but in the end, Matt narrows it down and ultimately gets the gold star for this round.
