In this episode, we return to one of Friendship IRL's most quintessential questions: what IS a friend anyway? Today's guest is Jeni Holla, who, two and a half years ago, left her conventional job to hit the road with her husband and pups and live the nomad life. They thought this adventure would last six or twelve months but liked it so much they're still living this lifestyle.Having a social life on the road is challenging. Jeni doesn't have many close friends, unlike her husband, who has been close to the same people for decades. When she reached out to Friendship IRL, she said she sometimes felt she wasn't doing friendship “right.”The question of what friendship looks like is one I get asked a lot. If you're like Jeni and her husband, who move frequently, the question is even more pressing. There is no one answer – what works for you might not always be what works for other people, and that's okay. In this episode you'll hear about:The activities or “plugs” we associate with certain people – and how, often, if you just go do the thing you want to do, you'll meet other people doing that thingConnecting to people in a small town vs. a big city and how Jeni “follows the breadcrumbs” in new towns, often meeting people in third placesThe “ride-or-die” friends, which are difficult to maintain when we get older due to people moving to new places or transitioning to new lifestylesThe power in knowing what you want out of friendship, which allows you to create a filter and meet people with intentionThe patience required for deep connections, and how there are always more layers you can developResources & Links:In this episode, I refer to Episode 3, “What is a Friend?”; Episode 12, “Digging Into the 3 Kinds of Friendship Roots”; Episode 38, “Third Places,” and Episode 39, “Take Action.Like what you hear? This episode from the Season called Armored is a must listen! Reagan talks with author, speaker and radio show host Susie Larson, on how we can stand firm in our faith victorious, as the devil prowls around looking for something to devour in our lives. In a life burdened with challenges, it is common to question God's purpose for you. You may find yourself confused and bewildered why your life is suddenly taking uneventful turns. But stick firmly to God's calling because your sense of purpose may actually save you in the future. In this episode of Revelations Podcast, Reagan had a meaningful discussion with Susie Larson, a best-selling author, and a popular radio host of the show Susie Larson Live. Susie shared how she overcame the fears from her past through a faithful heart and knowing God's calling for her.If you want to know how to outlast your life's challenges with devotion, this episode is for you. Here are three reasons why you should listen to this episode:Be inspired by Susie's story of faith and devotion toward healing and recoveryLearn why overcoming challenges with God can lead you to your sense of purposeKnow the devil's intention and how you can outlast it with God's calling ResourcesPodcast website: therevelationspodcast.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/therevelations.podcastFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/reagan.kramerThis podcast is sponsored by Advanced Medicine Alternatives Previous episodesThe Economy of Mercy - Melissa ColemanBible Verses: Ephesians 4:27, Ephesians 6:16, 1 Peter 5:8-9, John 10:10, James 4:7Books: Prevail Devotional by Susie Larson, 2020, This Present Darkness by Frank PerrettiConnect with Susie: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedInEpisode Highlights[03:46] A Childhood With GodEver since she was a kid, Susie always knew God is real but still questioned the accessibility of JesusExperiencing a sexual trauma at the age of nine brought confusion and trauma to Susie while growing upSusie: “When I got up from that, I heard in my ear: I can get to anytime, anywhere and God will never stop me.”Susie believes that not knowing who you are, kills your time, treasure, and talents given by God.She began her journey with Christ in eighth grade. A bunch of teens mocking a nun's lecture on the book of revelation convinced her to start reading the bible. [09:53] Strengthening Her Faith Despite ChallengesSusie encountered a rough pregnancy and a diagnosis of Lyme disease but God's miracle always prevailed.God helped her realize how her deep insecurities are a product of her childhood trauma. The challenges she encountered after pregnancy such as medical debt are God's way of showing her the cracks in her foundation as a Christian follower. [13:05] Redeeming A Sense Of PurposeBattling Lyme disease while caring for her three little boys revealed her seemingly new faith as a young mom. While feeling lost and misunderstood, a woman from her church took her case into a prayer room and told her about God's message about it.Susie: “The Lord showed me the platform that he's building with your pain, that you're going to speak from it and tell others about the faithfulness of God. So lean in and learn everything you can because you'll have a story to tell after.”As believers, it is important to not only hold promises within ourselves but to also fight and contend for them to come true. The enemy's threat to you is very connected to your threat to him. So teach children how to discern God's vision for them before the enemy can even blur it. [18:24] A Daily Fight Through God's EnergySusie believes sickness is a way the devil discourages her on a daily basis. You do not have to feel good to be powerful in the kingdom. Staying encouraged can help meditate on his love and faithfulnessPeople are prone to wander into sin as equally, they are to wander into self-striving.Being intimate with God fuels Susie to accomplish her daily goals and tasks. In a changing world, Susie reminds us of the importance of getting our lives cleared of negative thoughts and objects. Guarding our lives against the devil is portrayed as if planting a seed in the soil of your pure heart. [27:15] Defining The Devil's IntentionThe devil wants to lie, kill, and destroy. He can't steal your soul so he distresses your destiny instead. Many Christians believe they are saved but don't know they are loved so they fail to fulfill their destiny.Fear becomes rebellious when people are intimidated by the devil and begin to react negatively in situations.Susie: “He's [the devil] creative but God is the uncreated one. And resurrection power lives in us. If we walk in the fear of the Lord, that is our place of Safety.”Listening to your self-sabotaging narratives can show you the inroads that the devil has purposely established. [38:57] Obedience When Fighting For FreedomHer son's football injury threatened his identity as an athlete. But their undeniable faith and trust in the Lord led to healing and recovery. Her son's retraction towards health is connected to a boy who prayed for him.God does not ask people to be obedient, he only wants to show the role of his presence in trying times.Fighting for freedom is not over until we see God face-to-face.Reagan: “I always say God never wastes our suffering. He never wastes our trials. And we might not see his redemptive power in this lifetime but a lot of times he gives us that blessing.” [53:45] Susie's Advice On Keeping A Firm FaithRemember that the same power that rose Christ in the grave is alive in you.Spending 15 minutes a day emphasizing the love God has for you may sculpt how your brain works towards changing your perspective of faith. The best way to stand against the enemy is to strengthen your attachment to God.Susie tells that when you fill up your heart with God there will be no room for the enemy to steal from you. And So, She Left: Wisdom from Women Beyond the Corporate World
Content Warning: This episode contains mature themes including self-harm and trauma. After 30 years as an award-winning radio producer in Boston, Katherin's mentor Michelle Redo left her old life behind, relocating to a farm in rural Maine with her husband to pursue creative ventures. It was a change she never anticipated. Life on the farm has given Michelle time and space to reflect. She hosts the podcast “Daring to Tell,” where she explores her love of memoirs and the intimate bond they forge between author and reader. As someone who's mainly worked behind the scenes in broadcasting, getting behind the mic has prompted her to explore nuanced themes like uncertainty, change, and trust in great depth; along with how these themes have manifested in her own journey so far. This episode shines a spotlight on Michelle's inspiring transition, her experiences in carving out a new life, and how exploring fear can be the catalyst for rewarding transformations. It's an insightful exploration of the resilience and adaptability that underscores the spirit of "And So, She Left." Listen to Daring to Tell. Author and podcast host Allison Pelot joins me to expand on the principles of empowered wellness. We talk about daily practices that allow space for reflection and connection, as well as what inspired her to write her book, Finally Thriving. Allison highlights how writing has the power to bring subconscious stories to the surface and provide a different lens on life. In building the habit of journaling, we can follow our curiosity and disrupt patterning. So many of us are used to living life like we're performing, but once we start to detach from the outcomes and embrace the flow, that's when we truly start thriving. Allison and I discuss the value of prioritizing time to be in your energy, or as she likes to call it, taking yourself out on a wellness date. There's a certain abundance and vitality that comes from living authentically, and Allison shares ways to get started on that journey. Listen to Allison's wisdom about living in alignment and practicing genuine self-care. In Episode 2 of this season called Armored, Reagan talks with author, speaker and radio show host Susie Larson, on how we can stand firm in our faith victorious, as the devil prowls around looking for something to devour in our lives. In this installment of the "Songs I Shouldn't Explain" mini-series, Ray and Ben talk to Quay Jones from the metal band S'efforcer about their thought-provoking song Colorblind. They explore the notion of heavy music as a place for radical honesty and difficult conversations, and how the arts can be a place to tear down stigma surrounding taboo subject matter. A quick content warning -- this episode contains references to subject matter that may be uncomfortable for some listeners.
