On this episode of Mormonish Podcast Rebecca and Landon have a fascinating discussion with Brandon Crockett and Alex Criddle about their new proof of concept project "EntheoMagus," a 40-minute documentary delving into the possibility that Joseph Smith and the early Mormons were using psychedelic sacraments.as a means to connect with the divine. This idea is gaining momentum as the mainstream learns more about plant medicines and their effects. Brandon and Alex present a compelling argument for the use of herbs and plants to facilitate group guided vision experiences as well as personal visions as described in early Mormonism. We know you'll find this as fascinating as we did! Part 1 of Episode 150! Yay!! And now for something completely different. This episode is a bit of a departure from our regular show. We invite Alex Criddle and Cody Noconi, researchers into the psychedelic origins of Mormonism, to respond to the recent debate on the Mormon Book Reviews channel between ourselves and Mormon apologist, Brian Hales. Brian attempts to provide the apologetic response to the theory that Joseph Smith utilized psychedelics (entheogens) in the early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in order to facilitate visionary experiences for the early Saints. Disinformation requires much greater effort than simply stating information so we do our best to debunk his debunking (rebunk the theory?). This one is a long haul so we split it into 2 episodes to make it a little more digestible. Smith was a prophet of the RLDS Mormons and paternal grandson of the founder Joseph Smith. In 1918 Frederick published this Ph.D. dissertation breaking down altered states of consciousness from an early psychologist's perspective, specifically, religious states of ‘ecstacy' as he called it. A lengthy chapter devoted to peyote is particularly worth reading. “The Higher Powers: Fred M - Smith and the Peyote Ceremonies” - Shelby Barnes' 1995 paper highlighting the curious psychedelic interests of Frederick M. Smith. While Barnes does not make any direct connections to Joseph Smith and psychedelics, Barnes does note that Frederick's interests were an attempt to find the reliable keys to visionary revelation that his grandfather Joseph had demonstrated. “Restoration and the Sacred Mushroom” - Dr. Robert Beckstead's seminal research paper presented at the August 2007 Sunstone Symposium. Beckstead's paper was the first to propose the possibility that Joseph Smith used psychedelics to facilitate visionary experiences. “A 1920's Harvard Psychedelic Circle with a Mormon Connection: Peyote Use amongst the Harvard Aesthetes” Alan Piper's 2016 paper highlighting Frederick M. Smith's interest in psychedelics, and how as a standing Mormon prophet Fred was funding a 1920s group of Harvard students with peyote. “Revelation Through Hallucination: A discourse on the Joseph Smith-entheogen theory” - Bryce Blankenagel and Cody Noconi's 2017 follow-up paper further explores the hypothesis originally put forward by Dr. Robert Beckstead a decade earlier. “The Entheogenic Origins of Mormonism: A Working Hypothesis” - Dr. Robert Beckstead, Bryce Blankenagel, Cody Noconi, and Michael Winkelman's paper published in the Journal of Psychedelic Studies in June 2019. This was the first paper on the subject published in an academic journal. “Visions, Mushrooms, Fungi, Cacti, and Toads: Joseph Smith's Reported Use of Entheogens” Brian Hales' 2020 response paper to the one published in the Journal of Psychedelic Studies. As a believing Mormon engaged in academic apologetics, Hales details what he perceives to be holes in the proposed hypothesis. “The Psychedelic History of Mormonism, Magic, and Drugs” - Cody Noconi's book published in 2021. “Psychedelics as a Means of Revelation in Early and Contemporary Mormonism (Part 1)” Alex Criddle's 2023 paper that was originally presented at the Forms of Psychedelic Life conference at UC Berkeley (April 14-15, 2023). “Psychedelics as a Means of Revelation in Early and Contemporary Mormonism (Part 2)” A continuation of Alex Criddle's 2023 paper. “A Real Spiritual High: In Defense of Psychedelic Mysticism” An enlightening philosophical essay from Alex Criddle. Every General Conference the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announces new temples. We walk through the history surrounding a few of the worldwide temples, along with some of the subtle international political maneuvers necessary to open the door to a new temple project. Wherever the church wants a temple, leaders must curry the favor of local and national politicians and regulators, doing so with no legal oversight. This two-way-street of backscratching opens the way for national security risks. After that we jump into Hugh Nibley's Approaching Zion where he talks about gifts and laments how much people have to work for money when God provides everything we need. We round out with an update to the USDA guidelines for school food nutritional requirements being improved. Creating Interfaith relationships can be very difficult. We all want to be "right." We naturally and appropriately want to defend our beliefs. But if we all focus on "I'm right, " we spiral into debate and argument. For those of you with "mixed" religious families, you may know precisely what I'm talking about. Stepping into this space means you will take arrows from not only the other faith but from your own. In this episode, Evangelical Steven Pynakker and Latter-day Saint Greg Matsen flesh out these issues and other dynamics between Evangelicals and Latter-day Saints. Website - www.cwicmedia.com
ARE YOU READY TO LAUGH?!? Not a description you'd think would represent a video on war, but that's how laughable Jabra Ghneim's "response" to my Israel/Palestine series is. Bringing back Lindsay from Socialistlyakward with more facts and lulz. We made our 3 part Israel/Palestine series, and the Christian Zionists of Mormon Book Reviews responded to some strawman atheist Hamas supporting girl named Laura? So let's laugh, talk about the facts, and debunk tropes!Send Lindsay some love on Venmo @socialistlyawkward1443Check out her links to follow her in all the places: https://linktr.ee/Socialistlyawkward
All you gluttons for deconstruction, get on in here. I'm delighted to have Steven Pynakker tell me about his nuanced Christian worldview as I push back with every question I feel is necessary. What a treat. We tackle about the questions around the necessity of Christianity, the bible, and religion as a whole. I think it has something for everyone. Believers, non-believers, and everyone who hated my appearance on Steven's program "Mormon Book Reviews". It gets a bit uncomfortable at times, I welcome all pushback, so let me know your thoughts in the comments!Check out my episode on Steven's channel: https://youtu.be/OpBuCnMCwW4?feature=shared

Our faith is often attacked by those outside of our faith. Members of other religions often have no issue calling "the Mormon Church" a cult. BUT Steve is not one of those people. While he isn't a member of the Church of Jesus Christ and has no interest in joining the church, his respect for our beliefs is incredible. He is well-studied and has read the Book of Mormon with an open heart. He gives Latter-day Saints the opportunity to defend their beliefs and to share, without criticism, their devotion to the Church. We LOVE Steve!! In this episode, we talk about Steve's YouTube channel 'Mormon Book Reviews,' how Steve conducts his interviews, and how Steve decided to start his exploration of the LDS Church.
Back in January, Rick Bennett traveled to Florida to hang out with Steve Pynakker of Mormon Book Reviews. Rick & Steve get personal! Jaxon Washburn returns to Mormon Book Reviews to update listeners about his time pursuing a masters program at Harvard Divinity School. He and Steve discuss Jaxon's experience with coming out/identifying as bisexual and how that relates to his LDS faith and practice. Jaxon shares about some of the opportunities he's had for interreligious dialogue while at divinity school, including reading through the Book of Mormon together with one of his Evangelical peers there. Later, Jaxon provides exciting coverage of the “religious road trip” he embarked on during the summer of 2022 where he visited dozens of religious and historical sites significant to the Restoration and beyond. Whether meeting with Buddhists, Russian Orthodox Old Believers, or Mormon fundamentalists, Jaxon's trip reflected his strong commitment to promoting interreligious understanding and pluralism. He reflects on the emotional, physical, and spiritual dimensions of the trip, some of the misadventures he experienced on the road, and his plans for after graduation.

Steven Horne is a special guest on Mormon Book Reviews. On this episode we get to hear Steven's story of being raised in an LDS family that has a miraculous history and how he became Born Again reading the Book of Mormon. Steven has a very unusual story to tell and I want to hear from Evangelicals and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about what you think about it. (Of course I am always happy to hear from non-believers and Never-Mo's as well) .
David Read author of the book "Face of a Nephite: DNA studies & the Book of Mormon" is the latest guest on Mormon Book Reviews. David asked to come on to address some of the criticisms that Thomas Murphy and Simon Southerton leveled against his book both in a paper they co-wrote as well as an appearence on MBR. My hope is that this interview will help facilitate positve dialogue. #latterdaysaints #bookofmormon #ldspodcast

In this interview, I asked Jonathan to respond to some of his critics, particularly his LDS critics who published articles in the Interpreter earlier this year. Jonathan welcomes criticism because he advocates consideration of "multiple working hypotheses" based on established facts. But he objects to "gatekeeping" intellectuals that ban or censor interpretations they don't agree with--especially when they ban alternative faithful interpretations. He hopes the exchange in the Interpreter will lead to a more inclusive approach on the part of the Interpreter editors, as well as the gatekeepers at FAIRLDS and Book of Mormon Central. During the interview, Jonathan explains that his LDS critics don't seem to realize he is not writing only for LDS audiences so he uses citations to a variety of sources, so long as they are factual. And he looks forward to ongoing conversations with Mormon Book Reviews, the "Switzerland" of the Restoration.
Jonathan Neville returns to Mormon Book Reviews to give his perspective of the two news stories about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints finances that recently aired. The Fifth Estate in Canada and 60 Minutes Australia released investigative reports about the way tithing funds are handled in those countries. Jonathan also responds to my interview with Nigel Kennett whose contact with the Fifth Estate helped trigger these investigations. Jonathan gives a faithful perspective and he discusses his experience in the financial world to offer some clarification on some of these issues. We also preview a future conversation where he will respond to some of his critics. #lds #mormonism #60minutesaustralia #cbc
Brent Ashworth returns to Mormon Book Reviews to present another historical artifact for "Show & Tell"! On this episode Brent discusses how he was able to acquire one of William E McLellin's lost journal volumes. He reads some very moving passages in the journal. McLelllin became a bitter rival and enemy to Joseph Smith. However, his testimony of the Witnesses and the Book of Mormon later in life is one of the most powerful ones ever given. #lds #ldspodcast #mormonism #communityofchrist
Aron Ra one of the biggest Atheist influencers on YouTube comes on Mormon Book Reviews to discuss the Book of Mormon with Evangelical Steven Pynakker! He discusses why he believes all religion's scripture is man made and why he decided to do a series about the Book of Mormon on his YouTube channel. Steven talks about watching Aron's program while he was an Athiest/Agnostic and explains the value of people like Aron who expose charlatans like Kent Hovind of the Christian community. I know that Aron will be a controversial guest for some of my viewers, but I do think it is important to know what kind of information that many of your children and grandchildren are consuming. I do think that Aron has integrity because he goes after all religions and not just Christianity. I also realize that about a third of my audience is Atheist/Agnostic and it is important that their voices be heard as well. Especially being a former one myself. I look forward to reading your comments! #aronra #ldspodcast #kenthovind
David Boice of 52 Churches in 52 Weeks Talks LDS Experiences! After a string of bad first dates and no church to call home, Dave Boice chronicles his yearslong spiritual journey in search for something more on YouTube and in a book. What started as a simple endeavor to find a hometown church turned into a thrilling spiritual adventure that is sidesplittingly witty and deeply emotional. Of note, David had some unexpected experiences attending two church services of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is still processing it and discusses it with Steven Pynakker of Mormon Book Reviews! From the streets of Manhattan to the beaches of Orange County, Boice explores numerous denominations including Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist, Episcopal, Presbyterian, Wesleyan, Quaker, Greek Orthodox, Christian Science, and other churches. From 20,000-seat megachurches to being the lone congregant at a Scientology service, no building was too big (or as a visit to “The World's Smallest Church can attest) too small. He danced with Pentecostals in Arkansas, immersed himself in prayer with monks that make beer in Massachusetts, worshipped at a Viking church in Wisconsin, and headbanged at a church known for heavy metal music in Ohio. You'll hear sermons from some of Christianity's most widespread preachers (Joel Osteen, T.D. Jakes), most intellectual (Tim Keller and Os Guinness), most emergent (Nadia Bolz-Weber and Jay Bakker), to even the most curious (Todd Burpo from Heaven is For Real). Boice's unique undertaking and honest reflection reveals startling epiphanies and insights that will engage both believers and skeptics. 52 Churches in 52 Weeks YouTube channel is a must-see for anyone who wrestles with faith in the 21st century.
On a very important episode of Mormon Book Reviews, Dr. Amos Brown Civil Rights leader and personal friend of President Russell M. Nelson of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is interviewed by Evangelical Steven Pynakker. In the interview we discuss whether BYU should change its name, does Dr. Brown forgive Brigham Young for his racist views, is the money the Church gives to the NAACP and other civil rights organizations a type of reparations, why he loves and respects Joseph Smith, and what it is like to be friends with President Nelson. We also discuss his background and church. I want to thank Dr. Brown for coming on and I hope this will be the beginning of a series of interviews that I will have with him. #lds #naacp
On the latest episode of Mormon Book Reviews, Joseph Smith image expert Shannon Tracy for the first time publicly discusses his thoughts on the recently identified daguerreotype that might be of Joseph Smith. Recently the John Whitmer Historical Association Journal published a paper co-authored by Ronald Romig & Lachlan Mackay that makes a very strong case that the image may very well be authentic. Shannon then talks about his projects that he has worked on to reconstruct the face and complete anatomy of Joseph and Hyrum. He believes that along with other forensic evidence that it will be possible to the reconstruct what really happened to Joseph & Hyrum Smith in Carthage Jail! #JosephSmithPhoto #lds #communityofchrist
On a special episode of Mormon Book Reviews, Podcasters Mitchell Cosgrove & Garrett Jefferies talk with Steve Pynakker. The name of their new podcast is Latter Day Bridge Builders. They share how their podcast is dedicated to building bridges between people in LDS culture. Specifically trying to build the bridge between ex members and true believing Latter-day Saints. They also talk about how they want to build bridges between other groups of people who have been effected or are just curious about Mormonism as well. Jonathan Neville returns to Mormon Book Reviews to preview a response he is going to give to some critics of his work. He then debuts a new painting (a rough sketch as he calls it) he did of the Stone In the Hat Demonstration that he believes will be a helpful visual aid to support his hypothosis of Joseph Smith being a conventional translator. Jonathan also discusses a very rare John Sorenson manuscript he has in his possession . We then talk about the great Book of Mormon online resources the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provides and KC Kern's revolutionary online BOM study guide. Speaking of KC, I want to thank him for helping salvage this interview with the added b-roll. I had major issues with zoom and it all ended working out in the end! #lds #bookofmormon #JosephSmithPainting
On the latest episode of Mormon Book Reviews, Gene Judson comes on to talk about his recent experiences of visting the Mormon History Association and Sunstone for the very first time! We discuss his interactions with Richard & Claudia Bushman, Newell Bringhurst, what it was like to be a cameraman for MBR, and being Joe Geisner's "eyes and ears" at the MHA. We then talk about him volunteering at Sunstone, how awesome Lindsay Hansen Park is and the nice note she wrote for him, and saving the day by getting the baseball caps to the Kickball Tournament! Gene then shares his personal faith journey and he also makes some awesome book recommendations. This is what Gene thought of the interview afterwards, "Thanks to Steve for letting me share my rookie experiences at Mormon History Assoc. Conf. and at Sunstone! Also for being able to pay tribute to Lindsay Hansen Park and all her contributions to the Restoration!" #Sunstone #LindsayHansenPark #MHA
Did you know that John Dehlin considers himself a follower of the teachings of Christ? And that he has a hope that the Death, Burial, and Resurrection of Jesus is true? Did you know that he would like to one day write a book? On a very special groundbreaking episode of Mormon Book Reviews filmed in the Mormon Stories studio, John sits down with Steven Pynakker and discusses his faith journey. From being raised in Katy Texas "Where Football is King & Jesus is Lord" to having an epiphany to start the Mormon Stories Podcast. Topics covered include the legacy of Sandra Tanner and the dinner organized by Allison Biggers & Jenn Kamp for her, growing up as faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Bible Belt, the ideal conditions for him to write a book, how he wishes he would be a nicer more Christ-like person, and what the life of Christ and his teachings mean to him. Our mutual friend Dr. Randy Bell sat in on the interview and as soon as it was over he declared it the "best interview of John Dehlin ever!" Let me know in the comments what you think. Also stay till the very end for a shout-out to Lachlan MacKay and John Hamer of the Community of Christ. It was super awesome that my channel was the first on camera interview about the discovery of the lost Joseph Smith photo! #JohnDehlin #MormonStories #JosephSmithPhoto

Stay tuned when Steven Pynakker finds out that he has a connection to this edition that he didn't even know about!
For the first time on a podcast, scholar of Mormonism Cristina Rosetti discusses her Pentecostal background here on Mormon Book Reviews! Cristina shares her experience of converting to the Foursquare Church as a teenager. For a while she wanted to become the next Aimee Semple McPherson, the female founder of the denomination. Cristina recounts the fascinating history of McPherson and the church. She also describes witnessing speaking in tongues, healings, and an exorcism! We then discuss her "Born Again" conversion to the Catholic Faith. We then talk about how she got interested in Mormon Fundamentalism via her study of 19th Century communitarian religious groups. This led her to specialize in the Study of the History and Lived Experience of Mormon Fundamentalism. What makes Cristina's approach so unique is rather than focus on Polygamy, she became enamored with the doctrines of Fundamentalism. Especially Adam/God. Next week she and Moroni Lopez Jessop will be giving a special presentation at Sunstone, it is previewed here. I want to thank Cristina for coming on sharing with the audience some of her favorite books and telling her story.
Steven Pynakker is joined by John Hamer and Lachlan MacKay to discuss the newly discovered photo that may very well be of Joseph Smith! On a groundbreaking episode of Mormon Book Reviews, Evangelical Steven Pynakker welcomes back on Josh Gehly author of the just released book "Witnessing Miracles: Historical Evidence for the Resurrection and the Book of Mormon". Josh is an Evangelist of the Church of Jesus Christ. He is a big fan of Christian apologists William Lane Craig, Gary Habermas, and Michael Licona. They are renowned experts on making a case for the historicity of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Josh uses the tools provided by these Christian thinkers to make an even stronger case for the coming forth of the Book of Mormon. Evanglicals and Restorationists be prepared to have your minds blown! Check out the link below to purchase. #JoshGehly #WitnessingMiracles #ChurchofJesusChrist
On the latest "Tuesday Tangents" of Mormon Book Reviews, Chris Jensen author of the book "Obscure Mormon Doctrine: Uncommon Beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" returns to discuss what is the main purpose of LDS Temples. Saving ordinances for the dead is a very unique practice of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. On this special episode Chris discusses the logistics of baptizing well over 100 Billion deceased human souls. Why is there a rapid increase in the building of temples? Could this mean the Return of Christ is imminent? I want to thank Chris for joining the "rotation" of interesting guests and topics we cover on Tuesdays.
On a very unique episode of Mormon Book Reviews, two Evangelists of the Church of Jesus Christ come on to discuss the great miracles and supernatural events that occur in their church! Join me as I have a conversation with previous guest Josh Gehly and newcomer Alphonso Hopkins. Alphonso is the newest ordained Evangelist in the church. He shares growing up in a largely African American Book of Mormon believing congregation in Florida. Racism, family tragedy, the dead being raised, and other miracles and events are relayed to us by Alphonso. Josh Gehly previews his newest book "Witnessing Miracles: Historical Evidence for the Resurrection and the Book of Mormon". He then discusses some of the miracles he and his father (who is the current President of the Church) had while on the mission field and stateside. Alphonso and Josh then offer a sneak peek of what goes on in their services at their local churches. It was awesome having these brothers on and I believe you will feel edified watching this episode. #JoshGehly #WitnessingMiracles #ChurchofJesusChrist
Today is regarded as the anniversary of the crash at Roswell. Was it an alien craft? A weather balloon? Or something else? On a very special episode of Mormon Book Reviews and the Steven Pynakker Channel, I am excited to have back on Roger Launius former Chief Historian of NASA and Senior Curator of the Air & Space Museum at the Smithsonian. Roger discusses how every year, before he retired, he would give a lecture at the Air & Space Museum about how it is a myth that an alien craft crashed in Roswell in the summer of 1947. He presents a slide show where he gives evidence that the main reason there was a "cover up" at Roswell had more to do with the Cold War than anything otherworldly. After the presentation Steven Pynakker was able to ask Roger a series of questions about the events at Roswell that he had himself as well as ones provided to him by members of a UFO sub-Reddit. It was really cool to have Roger on and at the end he was able to tie in Mormonism to the Space Program!
On the lastest episode of Mormon Book Reviews, the book "Method Infinite: Freemasonry and The Mormon Restoration" by Cheryl Bruno, Joe Steve Swick, and Nicholas Literski is previewed! I was sent a preview copy of the book by it's publisher Greg Kofford Books. I have been able to read parts of it and the book is groundbreaking and awesome! After discussing the contents of it with my producer Anthony Virella (who did an awesome job in the post production of this video) we decided to produce a special spoiler free sneak preview of the publication. This will be the start of my Mormonism & Masonry Summer series. In addition to having on Mormon scholar and Freemason Jason Smith (tomorrow night's interview), I will also have on some of the authors of Method Infinte on in the lead up to the Aug. 9th release. Please click on the link in the description to pre-order a copy. Stay Tuned!
On a very special episode of Mormon Book Reviews, Mormon Scholar and Freemason Jason Smith comes on the program to discuss his research regarding the influence of Masonry on the formation of Mormonism. In this fascinating coversation he discusses how the "Morgan Affair" played a major role in the development of the Book of Mormon. The idea that Masonic Temple Rites were well known at this time and they may have been referenced in the lost 116 pages is also explored. Jason shows how Masonry played a major role during the Kirtland period as well, especially in the formation of temple rituals and the Book of Abraham. The Nauvoo period is then discussed and it is speculated that Joseph's entanglements with Masonry may have played a role in his martydom. We talk about the book "Method Infinite: Freemasonry and the Mormon Restoration" written by Cheryl Bruno, Joe Steve Swick III, Nick Literski. Jason wrote a review of it for the September issue of the John Whitmore Historical Association's Journal and he previews it here. We then talk a little about Jason's background. He was originally a staunch anti-Mason as a member of the Southern Baptist Convention. His father was a Freemason and Jason talks about how much it met that he become a "Brother" to his father before his passing. The discussion then turns to his work regarding the legacy of Pauline Hancock, the female founder of a Restorationist church. This church would have a major impact on the lives of Jerald and Sandra Tanner and their ministry. I look forward to having Jason back on to discuss how the Restoration impacted his Christian faith. Stay Tuned! #Mormonism&Masonry #Freemasonry #Methodinfinite
With the upcoming anniversary of the Martyrdom of Joseph Smith coming soon, previous guest Brian Stutzman returns to discuss the controversial film "Who Killed Joseph Smith" written and directed by Justin Griffin. Brian wrote the groundbreaking book "The History of Warsaw Illinois: Including the Mormon Period" which covered the trial of the defendants who allegedly killed the Prophet. On this special episode of Mormon Book Reviews he discusses who actually killed Joseph and brings up a few more points that weren't covered on Midnight Mormons when he was a guest on that program. Justin is welcome to come back on this program to defend his work anytime. Stay Tuned! #whokilledjosephsmith #midnightmormons #historyofwarsaw
Movie Director/Writer Justin Griffin returns to Mormon Book Reviews to respond to my recent interview of Brian Stutzman author of "The History of Warsaw Illinois: Including the Mormon Period". Brian came on my program to offer up a few more crtique's of Justin's movie "Who Killed Joseph Smith?" that he wasn't able to get to on his most recent appearance on "Midnight Mormons". Justin was invited to come on my program to respond and he accepted the invitation. He asked that the episode be taped so it would be posted on the anniversary of the martyrdom of Joseph Smith. That is the reason for this special Monday episode. I want to thank both Brian and Justin for coming on to discuss this very sensitive subject. My apologies for the lighting in my studio, I just got new equipment and I'm still figuring it out! #whokilledjosephsmith #justingriffin #lds #midnightmormons #evangelical
Psych student and post-Mormon Nathan Smith returns with Steven Pynakker on Mormon Book Reviews, this time to discuss his favorite character in the Book of Mormon: Alma the Younger. Nathan sees the Book of Mormon's presentation of Alma as not only sophisticated and thought-provoking, but as psychologically insightful. Together Nathan and Steve psychoanalyze Alma to better understand this character and how the Book of Mormon understands Jesus Christ. This presentation was based on an essay by Nathan, which can be found on Medium: "The Inner Life of Alma the Younger: A Psychoanalytic Reading of the Book of Mormon"
To celebrate the one year anniversary of the release of the groundbreaking book "Obscure Mormon Doctrine: Uncommon Beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints", author Chris Jensen returns to Mormon Book Reviews! In this special episode Chris describes the overwhelmingly positve responses he has received since self-publishing this book. Chris also talks about the newly released audio format of the book and how easy it was to set it up in a very professional manner. Fresh from presenting at the Mormon History Association, Jonathan Neville returns to give us a report on how his paper was received. On this special episode of Mormon Book Reviews, the process of translating the Book of Mormon is also discussed. Was the Seer Stone merely a diversion for the plates and the spectacles (aka the Urim & Thummin)? Jonathan makes a very bold proposal that the spectacles were the main vehicle used to translate the BOM! He also previews a project he is starting to work on called "The Myth of the Mound Builder Myth". It is a response to Thomas Murphy's Mound Builder hypothosis, first discussed on this channel. Whether you are a skeptic or a believer, I think you'll find this discussion fascinating. #jonathanneville #thomasmurphy #moundbuildermyth #lds #mormon
Interview released 6-18-22On the final episode of the Under The Banner Of Heaven Aftershow co-hosts Rebecca Bibliotheca and Steven Pynakker are excited to have on Hanna Seariac! This is the second time we taped this episode and Hanna explains why she asked for the first one to be pulled. Hanna also discusses her recent article she wrote about Brenda Lafferty for the Deseret News and talks about why she felt it was important that her story be told. We then talk about the final episode of the FX/Hulu limited series titled "Blood Atonement". Hanna gives us her take on the episode as well as the series overall. We discuss the way that the Mountain Meadows Massacre was portrayed as well as Brigham Young and the martydom of Joseph Smith. Hanna also defends Lindsay Hansen Park and Dustin Lance Black against the accusation that they are Anti-Mormon. She also addreses the criticism that "she aligns with those who attack the (LDS) faith".
