Episode 87. The timing of this Bonus episode is auspicious given the recent debate regarding learning about the history of race in America, the book bans, and the current administration's aim to eliminate the federal department of education. While each of these issues are complex and engage different issues, they share the matter of understanding our history – all of it. And our history leads into what we do today. As part of my ongoing encouragement to know each other's faith and religion, Rick Bennett, host of the Gospel Tangents, a Mormon History podcast, has joined me to talk about the many splinter groups within the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-Day Saints, otherwise known as the LDS church or the Mormons. Whatever you might think or know about this church, I encourage you to listen with an open mind and heart. Rick is a passionate researcher and brings humor and curiosity to his work. Highlights: · Mormon splinter groups.· Joseph Smith: synchronizing the Old Testament and New Testament · Religions are seen as cults at their beginning. · Common miracles today.· Studies on faith healings and the placebo effect.· Succession, polygamy and theological disagreements.· The LDS church as the “One True Church”.Bio: Rick Bennett is the host of the Gospel Tangents, a Mormon History podcast. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. Creating Memorable Marketing Tactics Rick Bennett is celebrated for his ability to craft ads that not only capture attention but also provoke strong reactions. One of the standout moments in the episode is Christopher's recollection of Rick's iconic website from 1996. This site was more than just a digital presence; it was a masterclass in contextualizing advertisements within the competitive landscape. Rick shares an intriguing story about creating an ad for a political candidate designed to catch the eye of Sergey Brin at Google. The ad claimed the candidate had a revolutionary plan to eliminate income taxes and the national debt. This bold approach succeeded in getting the candidate a direct call from Brin, showcasing the power of direct and audacious communication. Vetting Executives for Courage Christopher probes Rick about how he assesses the courage of CEOs when considering collaboration. Rick introduces the concept of a "self-weeding garden," a metaphor for identifying the right clients. He emphasizes the importance of being straightforward and authentic, stating, "God hates cowards," to underline the necessity of courage in marketing. Christopher praises Rick for being unapologetically himself, noting that his authenticity sets him apart in the industry. Rick recounts his early experiences, including a pivotal moment with Larry Ellison, where he confidently challenged Ellison's views on advertising. This encounter not only solidified Rick's reputation but also transformed Ellison into an advocate for advertising. Guerilla Marketing: Making Generals Surrender Rick shared some important insights about guerilla marketing. One of the goals of guerilla warfare is to make the generals of the opposing army make mistakes. “My ads will attack your competition like a pack of speedy, crazed wolverines” – Rick Bennett He adds, “Demoralize the generals of the opposing army, then they'll make mistakes. You have your investors to say, ‘Hey we have a winner here' and you have to make the employees feel that their boss is kicking ass.” In the end, marketers should aim for a campaign where you make opposing generals psychologically surrender, even before any battle has begun. Well, the 1st Session was meant to end June 15, but we are in the 1st Special Session that won't end....at least amicably so it seems. Here is where we are this week...and soon we will be in your communities too! LD 1857- Resolve, to Establish a Public Safety Health and Wellness Grant Pilot Program, sponsored by Rep. Lynn Copeland of Saco. Reconsidered, House amendment “A” provided the Department of Public Safety with 10% of the $2 million grant for the administration of the program. The amendment was adopted and engrossed by both House and Senate. This bill was advanced on behalf of MMA's Legislative Policy Committee (LPC). (See “Silver Linings” in Legislative Bulletin 05-26-2023)LD 1664 -An Act to Increase Reimbursement Under the General Assistance Program, Sen. Marianne Moore of Washington Co. The House amendment “A” removed the emergency preamble and fixing the appropriation accordingly was adopted and engrossed by both House and Senate. This bill was advanced on behalf of MMA's LPC. (See “GA Funding & Study on The Horizon” in Legislative Bulletin 05-26-2023) LD 1493 – An Act to Increase Affordable Housing by Expanding Tax Increment Financing, sponsored by Rep. Raegan LaRochelle, of Augusta, will come from Taxation Committee with a divided report. The majority report is “Ought to Pass as Amended.” This bill was advanced on behalf of MMA's LPC. (See “Pine Trees, Chickadees, Workforce Affordable Housing” in Legislative Bulletin June 2, 2023)LD 101 - An Act to Return to the Former Owner Any Excess Funds Remaining After the Sale of Foreclosed Property, sponsored by Rep. Chad Perkins of Dover-Foxcroft, will come from Taxation Committee “Ought to Pass as Amended.” (See “Tax Acquired Property Update” in Legislative Bulletin 6-09-2023)LD 130 -An Act to Eliminate Senior Citizen Property Tax Stabilization and Expand the Homestead Property Tax Exemption, sponsored by Sen. Rick Bennett of Oxford Co., will come from Taxation Committee with two “Ought to Pass as Amended” reports. MMA supports the majority report. (See Clarification-Property Tax Stabilization Act in this Legislative Bulletin 6-09-2023 or 06-02-2023)The Appropriations Committee will have made decisions on all funding issues including the supplemental/Part II budget (LD 258) and all items sitting on the “table” waiting for funding. Staff encourage you to engage with your legislators when opportunity allows and make phone calls to the members of the Appropriations Committee to encourage them to fund important legisla
Our necessary hiatus from our weekly podcast has been afforded a brief reprieve. Advocacy staff have been drinking from a firehouse of legislation and hearings on platform bills that have been waiting since cloture for printing and assignment to committee hearings. For the first time, MMA has needed to hold a May LPC meeting as bills are still cranking out with significant municipal impact, assigned short turn around public hearing dates and even shorter work session dates. This is the time of year when good public policy dies because of lack of time to dig in and understand or worse....bad public policy not well thought through passes without review. In the coming weeks, we'll be calling on municipal officials to weigh in with their voices directly to members of the legislature to help inform them of impacts, request adequately funding measures, and make corrections. We really need you now! This week we break down what has happened on a couple of MMA's platform bills and how you can help their fate. This week we break down: LD 1857 - An Act to Create the Public Safety Health and Wellness Reimbursement Fund to Benefit Public Safety Workers and Volunteers, sponsored by Rep. Lynn Copeland of Saco, was unanimously supported out of committee but in a form that requires and appropriations battle instead of on going funding. LD 1493 - An Act to Increase Affordable Housing by Expanding Tax Increment Financing, sponsored by Rep. Raegan LaRochelle of Augusta, was amended to avoid a fiscal note, but still provides an incredibly powerful tool for communities to advance their housing goals with local policy, but received a divided report out of Taxation.LD 130 - An Act to Eliminate Senior Citizen Property Tax Stabilization and Expand the Homestead Property Tax Exemption, Sen. Richard Bennett of Oxford County, also received a divided report in Taxation. While both versions advance sensible policy changes to the hastily enacted senior property tax freeze legislation LD 280 passed last year, the majority report removes the significant hardship placed on municipal tax collectors, assessors and communities. LD 1223 - An Act to Clarify Cost Allocations and Insurance in the Joint Use of Public Utility Equipment, sponsored by Sen. Nicole Grohoski from Hancock County, attempted to address a corporate imbalance for municipal pole attachment projects, to advance broadband connections via use of utility poles that exist in publicly owned way "rent" free. The final version was amended with agreement from the major players and afforded a sunset date setting the stage for a future legislative battle. Finally, in the good news category, we announce the winners of the first annual Douglas M. Eugley Memorial Scholarship for Public Service! Congratulation to Zachary White, of Skowhegan, Carolyne Sauda, of Bangor. Mary-Hollie Whitmore, of Milford, who we wish well in their college endeavors and hope to see in a future LPC Committee!

John takes the hot seat this time as Rick Bennett from YouTube Channel Gospel Tangents does the interviewing. Gospel Tangents is a channel looking to represent a 360 degree view of Mormonism and welcomes guests representing various views and experiences of the Restoration Gospel started by Joseph Smith. Rick calls John Dehlin the "grandfather" of Mormon podcasting. Not that he's old, but rather internet-old! Rick asks John about his journey in and out of the Church, dating an Oscar-winning actress in high school, some of his dealing with general authorities, and his excommunication and aftermath. They also discuss his tangles with apologists & neo-apologists, the Swedish Rescue, and whether he really wants people to stay LDS. ________ WE ARE 100% DONOR FUNDED! Thank you for your donations! Some of you may know that Rick loves sports! He's seen great wins, and suffered some tragic losses with losing some family members. He loves family history. This time Ben Buckner acts as our host, turning the tables as Rick shares some of his personal history.
Today, Juan Espinal, from Maestros Vibe, sits down with special co-host Rae Tereari'i Chandler 'Iao, from Waiwai Ola Ohana, to interview and talk story with Dr. Rick Bennett, a highly esteemed microbiologist serving Hawaiian waters and beyond through his work with Waiwai Ola Ohana and Applied Sciences. We talk about the ocean! The ocean means a lot to Dr. Rick. He has learned that the Hawaiian traditions of the ocean can teach us the way. The ocean is a sacred place that serves as the circulatory system for our Earth. The human impact on our planet has largely been out of sight. The ‘aina is the life force. Sometimes scientists can overwhelm people. Fishable, drinkable, and swimmable water is hard to attain. The impacts of deforestation have already been felt for hundreds of years in places like San Francisco. Our coral are living critters and they don't like being covered by our dirt. Raging muddy waters are preventable. Over-nourishing our shores will affect our clear tropical waters. The visibility in places is becoming less clear. Our water is becoming murkier. The ocean has its own microbiome like our gut. Polluting our oceans is like dumping poison near our children. Our fresh water on Hawai'i island comes from aquifers that percolate through lava. The fresh water floats on salt water that we pump up for our use. Over-drafting can affect our overall water yields. Some places, like Keauhou, are pumping a lot of water. Data has shown that rainfall on our island has dropped. There has been a public trust designated to ensure the health of our water systems. How do we determine the use of our water wells? It's not just where the rivers meet the oceans. It's also about our underground water availability. Geology is so complex. Our formulas are based on the past. Half of our water use is on our lawns. Some sprinklers are poorly installed and waste even more water. Subterranean estuaries rise and fall with our tides. Cold spots in the ocean are subterranean water discharges. Have you ever wondered where the rainwater goes in Kona? There are no streams. Our cesspools interact with our fresh water reserves. It is all driven by a belief that we need to be completely separated from our waste to protect us from our own human waste. Eventually we poison our bays. Hawai'i county does not have enough money to deal with their wastewater. Planned development in Kona is exponential. Pumping goes up as the population increases. Rain water is decreasing. We will need to dispose of more waste. We no longer allow cesspools, but why do we still use drinking water to flush our toilets? There are communities that are recycling their water. There is hope. You can capture your gray water. This is water from your bathroom sink, shower, and washing machine which can be reused for different applications unlike black water which consists of water from the kitchen and the toilet which must be treated differently. We can make fertilizer instead of shipping it in. We are seeing evidence of pollution that is reflective of the East Coast of the mainland United States. On this episode of Building Local Power, we share a recording of ILSR's recent event Democratizing Power: New Citizen Initiatives Challenge Monopoly Electric Utilities. Across the country, powerful utilities are actively blocking decentralized solar energy, degrading the reliability of the power lines even as they raise prices, and failing to make the grid investments needed for a clean, carbon-free future. Listen to ILSR's Stacy Mitchell and John Farrell facilitate conversations with the advocates who are leading the movement to take back control from electric utility monopolies. Highlights of the event's discussions include: Rep. Seth Berry and Sen. Rick Bennett of the Maine State Legislature discuss Our Power, a citizen-led ballot campaign in Maine that aims to convert the utility serving most of the state to a consumer-owned electric company, allowing for competition and innovation on a public grid system. Jean Su, Energy Justice Director at the Center for Biological Diversity, explains how advocates in Arizona are using antitrust and anti-monopoly laws to fight a big utility's plans to crush customer-owned rooftop solar power. Mariel Nanasi, Executive Director of New Energy Economy in New Mexico, tells the story behind a recent and highly unusual rejection of a proposed utility merger in New Mexico, brought about by grassroots advocacy effort. “Clean electricity is how we get out of the climate emergency. And all of that needs to flow over the poles and wires. Those poles and wires are a monopoly. And because of the last 150 years or so of the evolution of that industry, we have allowed it without really thinking about it. Without really noticing, we've allowed it to globalize, we've allowed it to conglomerate. We've allowed it to be the province of the few in order to extract value from the many. And so this is about power. It is about money. It's also very much about climate. If we're going to decarbonize, we know that we need to shift to consumer ownership because it works.” Related Resources Democratizing Power: New Citizen Initiatives Challenge Monopoly Electric Utilities The Role of Antitrust Law in Creating Energy Justice — Episode 127 of Building Local Power Mainers Consider Putting Electricity, Internet in Local Hands — Episode 103 of Building Local Power In Santa Fe, Momentum Builds for Locals to Take Charge of Electricity System – Episode 39 of Local Energy Rules Podcast A David and Goliath Fight to Tap World Class Solar – Episode 14 of Local Energy Rules Podcast Transcript Jess Del Fiacco: Hello. Welcome to Building Local Power, a podcast dedicated to thought-provoking conversations about how we can challenge corporate monopolies and expand the power of people to shape their own future. I'm Jess Del Fiacco, the host of Building Local Power and communications manager here at the Institute for Local Self-Reliance. For more than 45 years, ILSR has worked to build thriving, equitable communities where power, wealth, and accountability remain in local hands. Hello, today we have something slightly different for you. Last week, ILSR hosted an event called Democratizing the Grid. And at that event ILSR Co-directors, John Farrell and Stacy Mitchell were joined by Representative Seth Berry and Senator Rick Bennett of Maine, as well as Mariel Nanasi of New Energy Economy in New Mexico, and Jean Su of the Center for Biological Diversity. This group discussed the people-powered movements around the country that are taking on the electric utility monopolies with the aim of accelerating the shift to clean energy and winning democratic community control. We're going to share a recording of that conversation with you today. So without further ado, here's ILRS's Stacy Mitchell. Stacy Mitchell: Hello everyone. Welcome today. My name is Stacy Mitchell. I'm the co-executive director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, and I'm super excited about today's event. I'm excited to welcome all of you.
Evangelical Steven Pynakker interviews Mark Staker co-author of "Joseph and Lucy Smith's Tunbridge Farm: An Archaeology and Landscape Study". In this episode we discuss Mark and co-author Donald Enders archaeological expedition of Tunbridge Farm. Joseph and Lucy Smith cleared and farmed the land from 1791-1805. This episode is a bit a of a prelude to an upcoming show in which Mark will reveal the results of a soil study that will indicated what type of pollen it contains. This will enable us to know what type of crops they planted when they farmed it. Mark expects to have the results next month. So he will come back on and my viewers will be among the first to know the results! Stay tuned. Special thanks to Rick Bennett of Gospel Tangents for doing a last minute edit for me on this video.Link to purchase book
It is a real pleasure to have on one of the most important figures in Mormonism of the 20th and 21st centuries. The great-great granddaughter of Brigham Young, Sandra Tanner and her late husband Jerald were trailblazers in the field of Mormon research and scholarship. In this interview we cover her wonderful reception at this years Mormon History Association Conference, their involvement in Pauline Hancock's Restorationist church, Jerald's early doubts of the Book of Mormon, and the upcoming biography of her and Jerald to be published by Signature Books. I want to thank Rick Bennett of Gospel Tangents for taking time out of his busy schedule to edit it!Link to her ministries website
Evangelical Steven Pynakker has an in person conversation with scholar Don Bradley author of "The Lost 116 Pages: Reconstructing the Book of Mormon's Missing Stories". We discuss the process of recovering and reconstructing the missing stories of the BOM. What message did God write on the temple wall for Aminadi to translate? Did devout Quaker Lucy Harris really destroy the manuscript? And were Nauvoo era Temple practices in the missing pages? This is part 1 of our conversation. Part 2 is an intimate conversation of Don's faith journey from Atheism back to Mormonism. That episode will debut on Oct. 15th. Special thanks to Rick Bennett of Gospel Tangents for filming and editing these episodes!Link to purchase his book
In part 2 of his conversation with Don Bradley evangelical and former Atheist Steven Pynakker and Don discuss a unique faith walk. Don became an Atheist after reading many of the works of the "New Atheists" and dealing with a faith crisis. Don discusses dealing with a family tragedy, studying the mathematical probabilities of the nonexistence of God, the impact that Jerald and Sandra Tanner had on him, encountering the Baha'i faith, embracing Christianity, and returning to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints due to the research for his book "The Lost 116 Pages". Special thanks to Rick Bennett of Gospel Tangents for filming and editing this video. Also, a shout-out to Greg Kofford Books for helping promote this channel!Link to purchase Don's book
Evangelical Steven Pynakker reviews the book "Losing My Religion: Why I Love and Left My Mormon Faith" by Eric T. Hansen. The author is largely unknown in the English speaking world, but he has a following in Germany where he has lived for decades. Eric is a great story teller both as a writer and a speaker (keep an eye out for the release of my interview of him). While Eric ultimately left the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he is by no means anti-Mormon. It is an interesting personal journey of faith that he takes, and he shows that you can leave faith but not hate it as well. I want to give a shout out to Rick Bennett of Gospel Tangents for doing some editing work on this video, thanks!Link to the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075MBKL58/ref=dbsHulu Ink: https://medium.com/@eth_67947

[paypal-donation] Welcome to Gospel Tangents, the best source for Mormon history, science, and theology. I'm your host Rick Bennett. Dr. Jonathan Stapley devotes an entire chapter in his book, The Power of Godliness, to baby blessings. Given that baby blessings are not considered salvific, why spend so much time on that? Jonathan says it was his favorite chapter of the book! https://youtu.be/CUOGrTkDnx0 Jonathan: There's this exchange of letters between Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery and Peter Whitmer in Zion. Whitmer is the ward clerk. He has a Book of Remembrance. Book of Remembrance is the book that Adam creates. And so, he has this sacred document in which he is to inscribe the inheritance of Zion. And if you come to Zion, you receive an inheritance, that is your inheritance for time and eternity, while the earth shall stand and in eternity when it's renewed. When babies are blessed, their name is written in the Book of Remembrance and they receive this inheritance. They're essentially brought into this salvific community where salvation is no longer an individual affair. But it's not really an individual affair in Mormonism ever. But this explicitly communal salvation, in Zion that's just really remarkable and that Zion essentially fails. The Zion project, burns, and the saints moved to Illinois. And we have the Nauvoo Temple liturgy and the cosmological priesthood that reorders the world and universe of Latter-day Saints. We see the baby blessing becoming an annunciation of children's sealed position in the cosmological priesthood. Had you considered that? Check out our other conversations with Jonathan. Dr. Jonathan Stapley says baby blessings are an "annunciation of children's sealed position in the cosmological priesthood." Check out our conversation…..
