On December 5th, 1984, the naked body of Theresa Fusco was pulled out of a wooded area in Lynbrook, NY - the 3rd in a string of recent disappearances, putting pressure on police to find the monster among them. The medical examiner determined that a rape lkely occurred and the cause of death was ligature strangulation. Dennis Halstead had been linked to one of the victims, and in a police interview about Halstead, John Restivo inadvertently mentioned an occasional employee John Kogut. When police interrogated Kogut for 12 hours, during which interrogators lied to him about his failing a polygraph, Kogut signed a confession that was hand-written by one of the detectives. With the false confession, the trio were convicted and sentenced to 33 and a half years in prison. In this post, we provide an overview of our recent scientific paper, "Giving Farm Animals a Name and a Face: Eliciting Animal Advocacy among Omnivores using the Identifiable Victim Effect," which was published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology. We delve into the findings of our study with Dr. Eliran Halali, highlighting the benefits of telling the story of a single identifiable individual and its implications for future research on animal advocacy. Introduction In an era where we are no longer dependent on animal protein and can survive and even thrive on plant-based nutrition - a diet that is increasingly recognized for its health (Melina, Craig, and Levin 2016) and environmental benefits (Ranganathan et al. 2016), our study "Giving Farm Animals a Name and a Face" explores a unique approach to animal advocacy. We investigate whether the identifiable victim effect, a well-documented phenomenon in eliciting prosocial behavior (Small and Loewenstein, 2003), can be leveraged to promote empathy and action toward farm animals among omnivores. The Identifiable Victim Effect Previous research has shown that stories about a single, identifiable victim are more effective in evoking prosocial affect and behavior than information about anonymous or statistical victims (Jenni and Loewenstein 1997; Small, Loewenstein, and Slovic 2007; Kogut and Ritov 2005b, [a] 2005). This phenomenon, known as the identifiable victim effect, although usually accompanied by a photo or a video of the identifiable victim, suggests that even minimal identifiability can significantly increase caring and donations (Small and Loewenstein 2003). Our research expands on this concept, exploring its application in animal advocacy and, mainly, whether one can elicit compassion for farm animals among omnivores. The Identifiable Animal Victim Effect Research on the identifiable victim effect, primarily focused on human beneficiaries, has only recently expanded to animal victims. Studies explored this effect with endangered animals and climate crisis (Markowitz et al. 2013; Hsee and Rottenstreich 2004). Markowitz's study (2013) revealed that non-environmentalists were more likely to donate to a single identified animal victim, such as a panda than a group. However, this effect was not as prominent among environmentalists, possibly due to their already high prosocial intentions. These findings suggest that the identifiable victim effect can be a crucial factor in animal advocacy, highlighting the unique impact of emotional connection to a single, identifiable animal. Our study uniquely challenges the identifiable victim effect by focusing on omnivores, who are the very reason the victim needs help in the first place. Method Participants were exposed to an experimental intervention and answered questionnaires. Intervention Lucky's story. Drawing inspiration from real-life cases, we centered on Lucky, a fictional calf who was given a name and a face (picture), or unidentified calves without a name and a face. Lub też „żeby kózka nie skakała, to by nóżki nie złamała”. Ewentualnie „nadzieja matką głupich”. A może popularne w polityce personalnej Jarosława Kaczyńskiego stwierdzenie „co się odwlecze, to nie uciecze”. Nasz problem wynika z tego, że każda z tych narodowych mądrości do jakiegoś stopnia odpowiada na pytanie, czemu po sześciu latach nawilżania bagna w TVP, pierwszy bagienny został ścięty. Nie, to nie jest tak, jak stara się to zaprezentować Kurski — że w sumie sam chciał odejść do nowych zadań, a zatem partia matka po prostu przesuwa go na nowy odcinek. Tak, Kurski chciał odejść z TVP, tyle, że nie teraz i nie w taki sposób. Zamierzał kandydować w wyborach do Sejmu w przyszłym roku, ale biorąc urlop w TVP. Rzecz jasna — i tak sterowałby telewizją z tylnego fotela, wszak to główne narzędzie propagandy wyborczej PiS. Czemu zatem Kaczyński nagle opuścił kciuk do dołu? Wszak jeszcze 2,5 roku temu oszukał prezydenta, że odwoła Kurskiego. Otóż, przez te 2,5 roku wiele się zmieniło. Oczywiście, to nie jest tak, że prezesowi ciążyła toporna, chamska i prymitywna propaganda polityczna TVP. Kaczyński uważa, że tak trzeba docierać do wielu słabiej wykształconych wyborców. W jego myśleniu propaganda Kurskiego to tarcza chroniąca PiS przed aferami rządu, atakami opozycji oraz krytyką ze strony Unii Europejskiej. Prawda w tym wszystkim ma najmniejsze znaczenie, co Kurski świetnie udowodnił. Robiąc dobrze prezesowi i partii, a robiąc źle opozycji i Brukseli, Kurski popełnił jednak zasadniczy z punktu widzenia Kaczyńskiego błąd: zgrzeszył pychą. Telewizja państwowa zaczynała przypominać dworską stację Kurskiego, w której on sam był głównym bohaterem. Przede wszystkim, używając TVP rozgrywał własne gry w obozie władzy, zwalczając premiera, a czasami nawet atakując prezydenta. Do tego doszedł kult jednostki — Kurski prężył się na koncertach i widowiskach sportowych w pierwszym rzędzie, zazwyczaj z małżonką, jakby byli Pierwszą Parą. Żaden prezes TVP w wolnej Polsce nie używał telewizji do rodzinnego autolansu. Dla przykładu — w czerwcu odbierając nic nie znaczącą nagrodę prawicowego portalu Kurski wygłosił prawdziwe expose, wzywając w obecności Kaczyńskiego do „przyspieszenia”. To było wyjątkowo bezczelne, bo Kurski zaatakował PiS za rzekomo zbyt zachowawcze działania, odwołując się przy okazji do hasła Kaczyńskiego sprzed 30 lat, gdy prezes uważał, że rozliczenia z komunizmem idą zbyt wolno. Według informacji „Stanu Wyjątkowego” — który w tym tygodniu prowadzą dziennikarze Onetu Andrzej Stankiewicz oraz Kamil Dziubka — prezes PiS był ambicjami politycznymi Kurskiego coraz bardziej poirytowany. A Krych puka się w głowę i mówi, że przez dekadę wpłacał pieniądze na pomagającą niepełnosprawnym fundację Koguta, czy PiS było przy władzy, czy nie. W dodatku twierdzi, że przed aresztowaniem dostał ofertę zapłacenia 1,5 mln euro za pozbycie się „kłopotów” z prokuraturą i służbami. Petco Love is a nonprofit organization (previously known as the Petco Foundation) that offers several programs to help dogs and the people who love them. Petco Love's President, Susanne Kogut, explains how Petco Love raises money where that money goes. They have funded cancer research studies done by the University of Pennsylvania and Oklahoma State University among others, and have also partnered with veterinary universities to provide funds that each facility can use to help owners who cannot afford cancer treatment for their pets.
