The Morris Animal Foundation has been around since 1948 when it was founded by Dr. Morris. Kelly introduces us to some of the unique research the Foundation is currently pursuing, including a project on horse behavior as well as donkey pain. Additionally, Kelly discusses the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, which was conceived of as a cancer risk study. 3,044 Golden Retrievers were enrolled between the age of 2-6 years old. Every year, the veterinarian and owner of the enrolled dog's fill out a questionnaire (which is over 100 pages!), as well as creating a hair, blood, feces, nails and urine bank every year. The cost of the study, you may ask? $32 million. Shifting gears to Parvovirus. Parvovirus is a horrible disease, which grows in rapidly dividing cells. The disease affects the GI tract, as well as bone marrow. Common symptoms include smelly, bloody diarrhea (Laura emphasized just how smelly it is) and a low white cell count, which is usually used as a diagnosis. Additional tests are then used to confirm. Luckily, vaccines were developed to tackle Parvo, but it has not been entirely eliminated.  This virus has mutated over time, which led to further research on Parvo. The Baker Institute at Cornell is looking deeper into the Parvo mutation, and whether the current vaccines can protect dogs against these new variants. At a higher level, this research will also help us understand more about canine immunity. And lastly, they are looking at what configuration of antibodies is the best to ultimately be a treatment, and whether these antibodies could be made in the lab. One of the largest, most comprehensive canine, prospective studies to date. The risk of cancer is actually 60% in the golden retriever breed. We have at least one dog in each of the 48 contiguous United States. Documentation is taken is great detail on the nutritional, environmental and genetic risk factors for cancer and other diseases. Dr. Kelly Diehl talks with Dr. Lauren Schnabel, Associate Professor of Equine Orthopedic Surgery at North Carolina State University. The two discuss Schnabel’s new therapy to combat persistent joint infections in horses, potentially saving them from years of pain. Her team developed a platelet-rich plasma lysate that, when teamed with antibiotics, can eradicate bacterial biofilms common in joint infections.

One of the breeds at highest risk for developing cancer is the hugely popular Golden Retriever. About 60 percent of all Golden Retrievers will die from cancer – 57 percent of females and 66 percent of males. The two most common types of cancer in this breed are hemangiosarcoma and lymphoma. Why is this relevant to doodle owners? Whatever is common in a golden retriever can be an issue for a goldendoodle. Sadly, a number of our Doodle Kisses members have lost goldendoodles to cancer. Our guest is Dr Kelly Diehl, senior director of science & communication for the Morris Animal Foundation, which is the organization currently conducting The Golden Retriever Lifetime Study. The Golden Retriever Lifetime Study is a $32 Million study, an amazing comprehensive study of GR's through their lifetime. This study is collecting a huge amount of data on GRs: spay/neuter ages, swimming and water temp, how dog was obtained, health conditions, pedigree, exposure to certain environments/chemicals and more! While a vaccine is now available, it can be confusing for owners to decide if their dog(s) need or would benefit from vaccination. Dr. Kelly Diehl discusses feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with Dr. Elizabeth Rozanski, a veterinary researcher and clinician with the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. The ailment is the most common form of heart disease in cats, where the muscle in the heart itself thickens to the point that the heart can no longer function correctly to pump blood through the rest of the body. Ultimately, this can lead to heart failure. Dr. Rozanski details this problem and her Morris Animal Foundation-funded research, which looks at ways to train veterinarians to screen cats for the disease.

Since 1948, Morris Animal Foundation has funded more than 300 cancer studies, investing nearly $40 million, and continues to make strides against the disease, thanks to generous donor support. “We are asking people to not only join us in our fight, but imagine a world where all cancers are treatable and more cures possible,” said Tiffany Grunert, Acting President/CEO of Morris Animal Foundation. “This is a vicious disease that is seen in the pets we love and the wild animals we admire and with the help of our supporters we can change that.” With almost 70 years of cancer research to date, Morris Animal Foundation funding has led to numerous breakthroughs and advancements in cancer care, including: Improved cancer surgery imaging for complete surgical removal of tumors in cats and dogs, improving both treatment decisions and decreasing incidence of tumor recurrence Testing of a canine melanoma vaccine, now confirmed safe and effective in horses with melanoma, providing an effective treatment for a devastating cancer in horses Clinical trials for promising treatments for osteosarcoma, a devastating cancer in dogs, that give hope for improving outcomes for patients Advances in the understanding of viral cancers in domestic cats and wildlife that have helped in the development of prevention protocols and treatments, including vaccine development for feline leukemia virus The Blue Buffalo Foundation is once again partnering with Morris Animal Foundation in the fight against cancer, with a dollar-for-dollar gift match, up to $75,000, until the end of the campaign on May 31. In addition to raising funds for cancer research, Morris Animal Foundation will provide pet owners and animal lovers free downloadable cancer prevention checklists. The Foundation also will share stories of donors who lost their pets to the disease and learn why those owners support the Foundation and the Unite to Fight Animal Cancer campaign.
