For the last day of National Autism Awareness Month, we are sharing a 2012 interview with best-selling author Sy Montgomery, talking about her book "Temple Grandin: How the girl who loved cows embranced Autism and changed the world." After that comes an excerpt from a 2006 interview with Temple Grandin herself, talking about her best-known book, "Animals in Translation: Using the Mysteries of Autism to Decode Animal Behavior." In the book, Grandin explains how her autism has actually enhanced her ability to understand the thinking of animals and how they see and move through the world.

Send us a textAutism doesn't come with a handbook. When Lexi first noticed her son Alexander spinning repetitively at six months old, she had no idea she was witnessing early signs of autism. Despite mentioning these behaviors to doctors, it would be months before medical professionals validated her concerns.Today, Lexi opens her heart about raising Alexander (affectionately called "Brother"), a non-verbal kindergartner on the autism spectrum, alongside her daughter Adeline, who faced her own medical challenges with a club foot requiring multiple surgeries and treatments. Through these unexpected journeys, Lexi has discovered strength she never knew she possessed."Some things Alexander likes – tight hugs or pressure. One thing we learned in occupational therapy is if he's having a meltdown in public, to just start applying pressure from head to toe," Lexi shares, offering a glimpse into the practical strategies that help her son navigate a world that can feel overwhelming to his senses. She explains how common environments like grocery stores can become sensory battlegrounds, with sounds and lights amplified tenfold for those on the spectrum. This conversation transforms our understanding of autism beyond stereotypes. Alexander might not speak, but he communicates brilliantly by guiding people's hands to what he wants. He experiences joy through repetitive movements that bring him comfort. His sister has become his fiercest advocate, explaining autism to friends with remarkable compassion.Whether you're raising a child with special needs or simply want to better understand autism, this episode provides profound insights into creating a more inclusive world. As Lexi powerfully states, "I don't need to fix Alexander to fit in. We just need to figure out how to fix those around us to accommodate him better."Ready to become a more compassionate, informed member of your community? April is National Autism Awareness Month and who better to learn from than an Ochsner Children's Hospital professional? This week I am happy to welcome Caroline Turner, LMSW - Licensed Master Social Worker at at Michael R. Boh Center for Child Development. ( Over on Jeff Highway!) Caroline dives in with us to explain to me exactly what is Autism Spectrum disorder? How do we detect it? What signs to look for and what we need to do if we do suspect something like this in our child. She connects us with resources to help not only learn about this ever increasing developmental disability but empower the parents with knowledge and even more resources. To learn more: www.ochsner.org/bohThen later we welcome our brand new sponsor, The Gift of Adoption fund! Doug Munster, fellow gay dad, heads the GOA fund in Georgia. Did you know that less than 2% of Americans complete an adoption? 2%! To me, that is mind boggling with the amount children that are in this country that needs a forever home. Although a dismal number for adoptions, 30% of Americans have contemplated adopting! That number to me is inspiring. That shows me that the desire is out there. So why does it end with 2% of completions? 81% cite the high cost of adoption as a primary barrier. This is where The Gift of Adoption fund comes in. This amazing non profit helps hopeful parents with the last bit that they may need to cross that line to finalize. Through the GOA fund over $18 Million in adoption assistance grants have been awarded and 5,652 children with the gift of FAMILY. Marc Garcia has been at the helm of Visit Mesa, the City of Mesa's award-winning destination marketing organization, since 2012. He earned the DMO numerous visitor industry accolades and marketing campaign awards during this time. He was the catalyst for helping Mesa earn the first-ever Autism Certified City distinction in late 2019. Marc leads a team of 12 full-time employees focused on selling and marketing Mesa, Arizona, as a must-experience destination in Arizona. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Marc Garcia about the importance of genuinely understanding the need for Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion (DEI) in every part of the travel industry and the impetus behind Mesa, Arizona, becoming the first autism-certified city in the United States. He also shares some of the creative collaborations the city is building with other organizations and the local community, including the advent of professional surfing in the desert and an amazing farm to fork trail. What You Will Learn in this Episode: How Marc's love of family and his native city led him to a starter job at the Phoenix CVB and how his career in destination marketing has progressed over the last 25 years Initiatives that Marc has been involved in that have helped Mesa stand out from the crowd. Why Marc was so keen to move away from Mesa CVB as a name and how they rebranded as Visit Mesa The Visit Mesa Partnership Programme — why it's so unique and how it delivers an awesome ROI for its members How Mesa's role in Arizona's Fresh Foodie Trail® encourages visitors to the region to enjoy the farm to fork experience Creative ways that Visit Mesa is approaching Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion (DEI) and how they are using the principles to make their destination an even more attractive place to visit How Visit Mesa encouraged their partners, including the Chamber of Commerce, the city's Parks Department, and three of the largest hotels in the area, to undertake the Certified Autism Travel Professional course What Marc and his team are doing to celebrate National Autism Awareness Month in April, including a collaboration with local micro-breweries Marc's words of wisdom for getting community partners involved and engaged Spearheading Collaborative Efforts Marc and I had a fascinating discussion on the podcast about the collaborative efforts of Visit Mesa, the Chamber of Commerce, the Parks Department, and various neighborhood associations that have proved to be the bedrock of the destination's marketing success. He shared some of the best practices for spearheading a similar community collaboration, including going into discussions with an open mind and open heart. When you're building partnerships, all the stakeholders will have different ideas about how the relationship might look and how it might evolve over time. Marc shares why it's essential to acknowledge that and be deliberate about your plan at the outset, with clear presentation materials so people understand your overarching purpose. Partnership Based Program Many organizations run membership-style programs, while others prefer a partnership-based approach. Marc explains why Visit Mesa has chosen an agency-style partnership program with a pay-to-play model and a multi-tiered structure. Being a member allows businesses in the area to have greater access to the client base and a better ROI. We also discuss some of the creative collaborations that Visit Mesa is involved with, including the Fresh Foodie Trail®, which is a large part of the destination's brand and a strong differentiator, and the upcoming partnership with two microbreweries in downtown Mesa that celebrates National Autism Awareness Month this April. An Autism-Friendly Destination Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion (DEI) is coming to the forefront of everyone in the travel and tourism industry's mind, and Marc speaks to his personal passion for making Mesa a fun place to visit for all travelers. He shares why almost 5000 people in all parts of the industry have undertaken the Certified Autism Travel Professionals course and how the Mesa Regional Foundation for Accessibility, Diversity, and Inclusion is introducing high school students from Title One schools to career opportunities in the hospitality business. Marc shared so much inspiration from his journey to making Mesa an autism-certified city, and listeners who are interested in starting a similar initiative in their own area are sure to find his candid advice helpful. Lean into what it is that you're feeling. Because when you lean out…you separate yourself from you. This show is all about the magic tools that I use when I fall and need to get back up. I lean into what it is that's going on. I get curious and ask a question. And then I lean into my awareness and remain open to my awareness. I invite you to be open and not answer the questions you ask when you get curious. Listen for the feather touches and see what comes up. Watch how your world will shift and begin to slowly (or quickly) get easier and you'll be able to get back up with ease. IN THIS EPISODE, I TALK ABOUT:I invite you to be open and not answer the questions you ask when you get curious. How these magic tools are different from other advice you've been given before. You clear your desk. You clear your kitchen. You clear your closet. What if we cleared ourselves? What does it mean to CLEAR? For the past 3 days I have been so exhausted to the point where I could fall asleep standing up. What is that? I got back up after clearing it. In this episode, I explain what it means to clear something from your life. Our bodies act like radio towers and are picking up thoughts, feelings and emotions all the time. We are infinite beings with infinite knowing. Consciousness is a choice and when we're living in tru consciousness, we are one with life. When we're living in pure, positive energy, we function from total perceiving, knowing, being and receiving. Sound nutrition and equal education are the birthrights of every child. This is the rallying call that today’s guest Dr. Vaishnavi Sarathy bases her life’s work – confronting the false belief that children with disabilities are incompetent. She rightly believes that when we bring dignity and respect to all children, regardless of their assumed level of intelligence, anything can happen. For this first episode in National Autism Awareness Month, I am excited to share my conversation with Dr. Sarathy about the assumption of competence placed on children with disabilities. Are the assumptions we have about children with disabilities impeding their healing process? Are these assumptions blocking access to the support and resources that most of us take for granted? It's an important question and one that Dr. Sarathy addresses beautifully. Dr. Sarathy is a chemist turned teacher and functional nutrition practitioner focused on children with disabilities, especially Down syndrome and autism. She is also the host of Functional Nutrition and Learning for Kids, a weekly podcast about out-of-the-box learning and nutrition ideas for kids with down syndrome and autism. Her TEDx talk, Who Decides How Smart You Are, has been hailed as mindblowing and eye-opening. Practitioners and parents alike have attributed 180-degree changes in their attitude towards working with kids with Down syndrome and autism to conversations with Dr. Sarathy. Her perspective is shaped by her 13-year-old son Sid who has Down syndrome and autism, is non-speaking and is slowly carving his space as a poet in the neurodivergent space. This conversation is a passionate and moving call to action that is not to be missed. Listen to the full episode to hear: The history of Assumption of Competence and how it differs from Assumption of Intelligence How assumption of competence is an important foundation for children to feel comfortable in their own bodies How posturing towards children impacts them more than we know The internal stressors children with disabilities deal with every day – stressors that most of us are completely unaware of! Jude Morrow presented with communication and social difficulties early in life, which led to the diagnosis of Asperger's at age 11. Despite having educational challenges, Jude progressed through secondary school and graduated from the University of Ulster with an honor's degree in social work in 2012. Jude also wrote an article to give practical advice to those on the spectrum during COVID lockdowns and quarantine and shelter in place orders.https://thriveglobal.com/stories/autistic-and-locked-down/ Why Does Daddy Always Look So Sad? is an incredibly honest and inspiring memoir detailing Jude’s life experiences and how living with autism ultimately shaped his journey. And, he’s not alone. About 1 in 68 children in the US is affected by autism. There are nearly 700,000 people on the autism spectrum in the UK alone; that's more than 1 in 100. If you include friends and families, autism is a part of daily life for millions of people around the world. “For as long as I remember I've always been different. The difference now is that I embrace and love my difference, and I want everyone like me to do the same.”Why Does Daddy Always Look So Sad? quickly rose to a bestseller after being self-published in the UK. Beyond Words Publishing will be releasing this debut memoir to the US in the midst of National Autism Awareness Month on April 7, 2020. Jude will be traveling to the States during the week of his launch to speak and advocate for all those who face disabilities today. Through his writing, Jude proves that those with autism can grow to live happy and successful lives-free from marginalization and societal beliefs. www.judemorrow.com
Many of us likely know someone on the autism spectrum or someone with a child or other family member on the spectrum. According to the latest information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 1 in 54 children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Recognizing April is National Autism Awareness Month, we’re discussing it on our Parent Talks podcast in two parts. In Part 2, we continue the discussion around autism awareness that we started in Part 1. Two mothers share their experiences with therapies, treatments, and strategies for managing autism. They’ll also talk about handling school transitions and the supports from their families, friends, and communities. And Missy Budworth and Kim Hall, pediatric therapists with Encompass, provide information about resources and support for after the diagnosis.
This week we are joined by Jordan's son Michael who has been diagnosed with Autism. He has been celebrating Autism awareness month and been begging to come on to talk about his experience. He has a heart to show the world what his "normal" looks like, and has a desire to encourage those with Autism to celebrate it with him. The theme these year for Autism Awareness Month is #CelebrateDifferences and that is what he has been doing! Many questions were asked, and many weren't, but we had a good time discussing his experience and things that he has learned on this journey. SAGE interviews TESE Editor Dr. Laurie deBettencourt and special issue Editor Dr. Tamara Marder on the February 2015 special issue, "Preparing Educators to Use Evidence-Based Practices to Support Students with Autism," in celebration of National Autism Awareness Month. Abstract: Given the growing numbers of students identified with autism, educators need an understanding of evidence-based practices (EBPs) to meet these student’s individual educational goals. EBPs are defined often as instructional strategies, interventions, or teaching programs that result in consistent positive student outcomes. Educator’s use of EBPs has been shown to improve the learning outcomes of students with disabilities. It is imperative that educators understand how to select and implement such practices with students in their classrooms and continuously monitor the progress of their students. Recently, two major resources that classify EBPs for students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are available for review. This introduction to the special issue provides a review of EBPs specific to the education of students identified with autism as well as discusses the current resources available to educators who are in classrooms supporting students with autism. Recommendations for how best to prepare educators to use EBPs are provided.
