Recently a good friend made a great, salient post for Autism Awareness Day, which led me down a path of thinking about what makes good awareness and advocacy.
We're doing things slightly different this week (it is episode 13, after all). As a 44-year-old doctor who recently discovered I'm autistic, I'm sharing my personal journey of self-discovery for Autism Awareness Day. In yet another deeply personal episode, I walk through the signs I missed in myself while recognizing them in my kids, how I've been masking my whole life, and why I'm now embracing a more authentic way of living and working. I also explain why I'm done trying to build a business the neurotypical way and how I'm restructuring my work to avoid burnout while still continuing to create content I love. If you've ever wondered about late-diagnosed autism or are feeling burnt out trying to follow other people's rules, this one's for you! Got a question for the next podcast? Let me know! To mark Autism Awareness Day, Wendy spoke to Lisa Domican, who told her about her own children, and the inspiration behind 'The Grace App', and what she feels needs to be done to support autistic children and their parents. The Grace App for Autism helps autistic and other special needs children to communicate effectively, by building semantic sequences from relevant images to form sentences. The app stores a basic picture vocabulary of Foods, Things I like, Places, Colors, Sizes and Shapes on an iPhone/iPad or iPod Touch with a function for creating a sentence that can be read together. There is also a facility for finding and taking photographs of all the other things that each individual user may need. It is a portable means of supporting the communication development of the user, wherever they go and is proving invaluable in improving vocalisations through consistency of use over time. Grace and the other children have also learned to share what they see and photograph independently, as a result of using the App. https://www.graceapp.com/

Julie Neale is a life and leadership coach, mom to two neurodivergent boys, and creator of Mother's Quest, the Mother's Quest Podcast, and the Live Your EPIC Year Planner. Started in 2016, Mother's Quest provides inspiration, coaching, and community for mothers who want to live their version of an E.P.I.C. life while raising their children. At the age of 50, Julie received a diagnosis of ADHD, realizing that she is also neurodivergent. The diagnosis explained a lot and has provided a window for her to understand better what it's like for her children to embrace their differences while finding strategies to address the challenges. This year, Julie is serving on the UCLA Parents' Council. She looks forward to working alongside her son Ryan, from a parent perspective, to support neurodivergent students and their families at UCLA. Ryan Neale is a neurodivergent sophomore at UCLA, planning to double major in Communication and Disability Studies with a minor in Film Studies. He is part of the College Scholars Program at UCLA and recently was selected as part of the 2023 Chancellor's Leadership Program cohort. He is passionate about neurodiversity advocacy and sharing his own experiences to pave the way for others. He is currently a staff member at the Bruin Resource Center, where he is a student lead on a new campus-wide neurodiversity initiative to make UCLA more inclusive for students like him. This summer, he served on staff for the Stanford Neurodiversity Project - Research, Education, and Advocacy Camp for high schoolers wanting to create neurodiversity advocacy projects. He was also a speaker at the 2021 Stanford Neurodiversity Summit and has been a guest host on the Mother's Quest Podcast. Ryan was diagnosed with autism at the age of 18 months old and also identifies with ADHD and anxiety. April is Autism Awareness Month. April 2nd is Autism Awareness Day. I was so honored to have Ryan and Julie here to talk about neurodiversity, including autism, and all that Ryan is doing to build inclusive spaces for kids like him on college campuses. Listen in to hear Ryan and Julie share: Ryan's optimism around the neurodiversity movement, esp in collegiate environments Ryan's autism diagnosis at 18 months and his experience of learning of his diagnosis at age 13 Ryan's disconnection from his diagnosis given his propensity for rich connections How Julie was diagnosed with ADHD when going through menopause The difference in the ways Ryan and Julie accepted and integrated their respective diagnoses What Ryan's transition into college life has been like How Ryan has leaped into neurodivergence advocacy at UCLA Links mentioned: Connect with Julie: https://mothersquest.com Connect with Ryan: www.ryanjneale.com Mother's Quest on IG: www.instagram.com/mothersquestpod Ryan on IG: www.instagram.com/ryan.neale04 Ryan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan-neale-031112176/ Autism Story Telling Project in San Fransisco: https://www.autismstorytellingproject.com/ Spark Course about Ryan's college experience Mother's Quest Podcasts with Ryan related to neurodiversity: https://mothersquest.com/ep-93-learning-outside-the-lines-in-college-with-neurodivergent-advocates-ryan-neale-jonathan-mooney/ https://mothersquest.com/embracing-neurodiversity-and-being-an-adult-with-julie-lythcott-haims-and-ryan-neale/ https://mothersquest.com/ep-18-yolo-you-only-live-once-and-other-milestone-reflections-with-ryan-neale/ Learn more about your ad choices. Today is 2nd April. it is celebrated as World Autism Awareness Day. In this episode i am speaking about the significance of this day amd what it means to autism families worldwide.
We start with the fact Em has a cold sore, but we're not actually allowed to acknowledge it, or look at it, we also have issues with the use of the word ‘awareness' instead of ‘acceptance' in the labelling of ‘Autism Awareness Day'. There's a negative Airbnb review to reflect, then we get into Elio's Easter origin and Easter bunny questions, and his issues with his Easter Egg Hunt, plus Michael reveals his Mum's bleak easter traditions too. After that we get the full debrief on how Em, Michael and Marchella approached their consuming of ‘Renaissance: Part II” with ‘Cowboy Carter' from Beyoncé. Naturally that also means they'll talk through their favourite tracks, make hot tips on what's next touring wise, favourite cameos, country music facts and how the CMA's will deal with it all come award season again. Finally, there's the latest romantic comedy for Netflix from Lindsay Lohan called ‘Irish Wish' for them to review. It appears that no actual Irish people were harmed, or even featured in the movie, but it does come with a mystical Wish Bish and a lot of other whack features you're sure to enjoy. Then in our Sealed Section, on our premium service Emsolation Extra, Em, Michael and Marchella do a full track by track review of Beyoncé's ‘Cowboy Carter' from beginning to end, although their interest wanes near the end, because...27 tracks to cover off.Sign up now to start listening at emsolation.supercast.com.

Children who are neurodivergent face more challenges in education, with many learning environments unable to fully support children who learn and behave in different ways across the neurodevelopmental spectrum. And as these children struggle to be included in schools, their mental health can also be affected. In conjunction with Autism Awareness Day in April, we shine a spotlight on 15-year-old Qaisya's learning journey and speak to her father Shahrul Akmar about the challenges of raising a neurodivergent child.‘Because Feelings Matter' is a series that brings you the stories of people and their mental health issues. These stories aim to normalise conversations about mental health, and to show that it's okay to struggle emotionally and psychologically, but more importantly, to reach out for help. This series is produced in collaboration with Thrive Well.Image credit: Qaisya Shahrul

Every mental health struggle has a story behind it. Autistic individuals have stories as well, that go beyond the label of their diagnosis. In conjunction with Autism Awareness Day in April, this episode of ‘Because Feelings Matter' features the story of Sarah Ow, a young autistic adult and music teacher, and her mother Li-Ling. ‘Because Feelings Matter' is a series that brings you the stories of people and their mental health issues. These stories aim to normalise conversations about mental health, and to show that it's okay to struggle emotionally and psychologically, but more importantly, to reach out for help. Lean into what it is that you're feeling. Because when you lean out…you separate yourself from you. This show is all about the magic tools that I use when I fall and need to get back up. I lean into what it is that's going on. I get curious and ask a question. And then I lean into my awareness and remain open to my awareness. I invite you to be open and not answer the questions you ask when you get curious. Listen for the feather touches and see what comes up. Watch how your world will shift and begin to slowly (or quickly) get easier and you'll be able to get back up with ease. IN THIS EPISODE, I TALK ABOUT:I invite you to be open and not answer the questions you ask when you get curious. How these magic tools are different from other advice you've been given before. What can you do if you wake up today and your world gets flipped upside down. Lean into what it is that you're feeling. We look ahead to Autism Awareness Day (2 April) with a focus on autism in adulthood. Why do some autistic individuals only get diagnosed in adulthood, when earlier support and interventions in childhood would have helped them cope with their challenges? We find out from Dr Daniel Leong, Co-Chair of Autism Initiatives Malaysia who will share from a personal and professional perspective, while clinical psychologist Prakash Ravindran shares what kind of support autistic adults and their families need as they navigate higher education, job training, employment and social aspects of adulthood.Image credit: Shutterstock

Dr. Victoria speaks with Ben Levin! Ben Levin is an autistic teenage rwith a passion for writing. His first young adult novel, “In The Hole,” has just been released. Ben is a true inspiration to all around him. He says that “Autism is not a curse – it is a gift.” In this inspiring conversation with Ben, we discuss the meaning os Autism to him, his challenges and realizations that have led to breakthroughs in the way he views himself and he shares his perspective on resilience and compassion. As he shares, Autism Awareness Day should be changed to Autism Acceptance Day. Listen or watch this interview for a true lift to your day (and life). In “In The Hole,” nine-year-old David Kimball finds his safe and secure world unexpectedly unraveling after discovering his father has lost the family restaurant business, and subsequently their home. Forced to live in a borrowed car until it too is lost, David, together with his parents and sister, Julia, desperately seek shelter. After finding temporary housing in a decrepit inn, together with other individuals facing homelessness, David struggles to maintain a sense of normalcy even as his family faces the challenges and trauma of being homeless. Over time, through hard work and the support of their family and community, David searches for the inner strength and outward skills needed to help his family triumph over their dire circumstances. Will David and his family make it out of the hole?
You clear your desk. You clear your kitchen. You clear your closet. What if we cleared ourselves? What does it mean to CLEAR? For the past 3 days I have been so exhausted to the point where I could fall asleep standing up. What is that? I got back up after clearing it. In this episode, I explain what it means to clear something from your life. Our bodies act like radio towers and are picking up thoughts, feelings and emotions all the time. We are infinite beings with infinite knowing. Consciousness is a choice and when we're living in tru consciousness, we are one with life. When we're living in pure, positive energy, we function from total perceiving, knowing, being and receiving. It's when we have the ability to transcend our limited circumstances and actualize unlimited possibilities. It's my thirteenth annual rant about Autism Awareness Day and Month. If you're an autistic, let us promote Autistic Pride Month together. Join me. Do you want to be an ally? Tell people that April is Autistic Pride Month and a month for learning about autistics and their history. It's April 2 as I record this episode and I'm already tired of the ads I'm seeing on television, hearing on the radio, and reading online. I can't wait for April to end so I don't feel so frustrated and angry. This week we are opening the discussion about neurodiversity ( ADHD, autism, Dyslexia, dyspraxia , SPD etc) - what it is and our reflections as mums, coaches and in our own experiences. We look at the spectrum of diversity and traits that we recognise that in part contributed to us developing a problematic relationship with alcohol such as exective function and identifying as highly sensitive. We talk about strengths and shame, the all important topic of care for the carer, nervous system regulation in greater detail and why alcohol is never the right 'medicine.' Because it's Autism Awareness Day in the Uk on April 2nd we wanted to keep talking and doing work to understand and support our families and to raise awareness. There are big links there for the sober community - Dr Gabor Mate has written books about ADHD and part of what we can do is try to raise awareness for schools and workplaces to be diversity supportive - neurodiversity is one of the layers of othering that is traumatic for kids and adults and can affect peoples' lives and outcomes dramatically if not understood and supported. With20% of people identifying as neurodiverse we hope the tide is turning and we can embrace and foster different ways of learning and being in the world and these incredible gifts, not just saying that there is something wrong. We also explore the phenomenon of Kate's 'Covid Armpit'. It's Ok , it's gone now. Grab that cuppa and let's chat:) Love Kate & Mandy x
