Chris Herren's story is one of profound struggle and eventual redemption. Addiction impacts millions of families in heartbreaking ways. I know this personally and through sitting with multiple clients who have been going through it with loved ones. This makes today's conversation about addiction and recovery on the Cracking Open podcast especially powerful. As a young basketball prodigy from Fall River, MA, Chris soared to fame with over 2000 points in high school, even gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated before graduating. However, his journey with addiction had already started to derail his life and his future as a professional athlete. Due to repeated failed drug tests, Chris was expelled from Boston College.Legendary coach Jerry Tarkanian reached out to Chris and gave him a second chance to play college basketball at Fresno State. He flourished there, leading him into the NBA, playing with the Denver Nuggets and Boston Celtics. In secret though, Chris was still battling with alcohol and drug addiction, and basketball simply couldn't compete with the lure of alcohol, cocaine, and heroin. Despite his success on the court, his personal life spiraled out of control, culminating in an overdose and near-death experience in 2008. Through what he calls his "sherpas" – guiding lights on his journey – Chris fully embraced recovery, and has been sober since August 1, 2008. He continues to share his story through various platforms, including his bestselling memoir Basketball Junkie and the Emmy-nominated ESPN Films documentary Unguarded.Chris has dedicated his life to sobriety and creating a positive impact in the world. Through his company Herren Talks, he has reached over a million students and community members, sparking crucial conversations about substance use disorder and wellness. Chris's nonprofit Herren Project, empowers schools and communities to make healthy choices and supports families through recovery. Herren Wellness, established in 2018, offers residential health and wellness programs to support substance-free living.Chris's journey and this conversation around addiction recovery will resonate deeply with many of you. Even if you have not been personally touched by addiction, understanding this topic and its impact is crucial, making this conversation particularly significant.Love,MollyLearn more about Chris Herren and his work hereFollow Chris on InstagramMolly's next 3-month Cracking Open group coaching program starts in July 2024! Listen, Laugh, and Learn on The Amanda Seales Show! FOLLOW ALONG AS WE COVER: (2:08) - In a recent live performance, singer and rapper Doja Cat issued a very particular warning to her white fans. Just to reiterate, she said “WATCH YOUR MOUTH IF YOU WHITE,” as the song went into the hook– “N-ggas ain't shit, come up in your crib/ All up in your fridge, can't pay rent.” (7:30) – Voting & Venting: Let's Go To The Phone Lines. One caught our ears with the Gen Zers remixing Christmas carols. Let's listen to one. I thought it might be fun to remix my own Christmas carol, but not just any ole one– Jingle Bells, WHICH, if you didn't know… Was performed at Ordway Hall on Sept. 15, 1857, in blackface, during a minstrel show! James Lord Pierpont was the writer and composer who also wrote confederate anthems during the Civil War. (27:31) - BIG UP - TO ADELE'S UNMITIGATED GALL & CONFIDENCE In an interview she said– “With my music, and for whoever listens to it, I think I'm not the best singer in the world at all, but no one else can sing my songs like me because they didn't write them. No one can sing my songs like me, period.” “The lyrics are not their own, and I don't think anyone else should sing my songs.” “The Queen of Soul might be the one exception. Apart from Aretha Franklin,” Adele amended when asked about the late legend's cover of “Rolling in the Deep.” LET DOWN - Even robots are racist, y'all!! Black-owned athleisure wear brand Actively Black took to social media to call out Meta's Instagram for unnecessary ad-blocking. The first ad celebrated Black women, the second was Actively Black's impact report, the third was the brand's Black First collection, the fourth was their collaboration with the All Power to the People Project, and the last was the collaboration with John Carlos. (32:27) – And another thing! (35:44) - And now it's time for Watch Don't Watch. Documentarian Ben Berman joined me for a chat about his new two part series on ESPN's '30 for 30: The American Gladiators Documentary'. The 'American Gladiators' was a fringe sport that was shunned by the mainstream media and embraced by the American people. Former professional athletes turned gladiators would face off weekly against contenders trying to upstage the larger than life behemoths with names like Zap, Laser, Dallas, Nitro, Gemini, Thunder, Viper, Siren, Ice and Malibu. However, what we saw on TV was only the tip of the iceberg as behind the scenes, the 'American Gladiators' origin story was not the Hollywood fantasy that co-creator, Johnny Ferraro wanted everyone to believe. Ferraro was an Elvis impersonator hoping to the turn the 'American Gladiators' into a movie about the working man turned hero...or so he claimed. Berman takes us through a two part in depth dive of who the actual creators were, why Ferraro is so secretive about his associates and co-creator, "Apache" Dan Carr was not originally allowed to speak with Berman and ESPN regarding the 30 for 30 documentary. Follow Ben German on Instagram @horse_berman and Twitter @Horse_Berman. ESPN's '30 for 30: The American Gladiators Documentary' airs May 30 and 31, 2023, on ESPN and streaming on ESPN+. Synopsis: From 1989 to 1996, American Gladiators was one of the most popular syndicated programs in television, a competition show that predated the reality TV era but used many of the same techniques to attract viewers. Every week, “amateur” contestants would go up against a cast of “professional” gladiators in a range of physical competitions, setting up David versus Goliath matchups that were popular with big television audiences but also earned considerable criticism for being “crash TV”. The show's cast and crew look back on it all, with their memories complicated by regret over what it did to many of the gladiators' lives. And as the behind-the-scenes story of the series is told, from the beginning of the film, the central, most compelling character of the story is clear: Johnny Ferraro, the creator of American Gladiators, a former Elvis impersonator from Erie, PA who came to Hollywood with a dream of putting the show on screen and ended up with a singular success. “We're very excited to finally get this story out into the world, and you can trust that it'll take you to some weird places,” said Berman. “Come for the 90's nostalgia, but stay for the Elvis impersonators, the burps, the mental torment, the murder plots, aliens, and of course the undeniable atrocity of America's dark history. And sports. It's got some sports too.” The film features original interviews with Johnny Ferraro, Deron McBee (‘Malibu'), Michael Horton (‘Gemini'), Lynn ‘Red' Williams (‘Sabre'), the late William Billy Smith (‘Thunder') and Salina Bartunek (‘Elektra'). The documentary is executive produced by ESPN Films and VICE Studios and produced by Ben Berman, Kirk Johnson, Russell Wayne Groves, Danny Gabai and Andrew Freston. Advance press screeners, additional information, including film clips and director statements and bios, are available upon request. I created this show to share the gridiron knowledge nuggets I gain from researching various topics about the history of the National Football League. ESPN Films' “The Cave of Adullam,” Executive Produced by Laurence Fishburne. The film, which won the “Best Documentary Feature” at the Tribeca Festival, tells Inspirational Story of Jason Wilson's Dojo in Detroit. ESPN Films' latest documentary “The Cave of Adullam” is currently available to stream on ESPN+. Directed by Academy Award & Emmy nominated filmmaker Laura Checkoway (“Edith+Eddie,” “Lucky”), the documentary tells the story of Jason Wilson and the transformational training academy he runs for young Black boys. With his mantra, “it's easier to raise boys than repair broken men,” Wilson's methodology teaches emotional stability instead of discipline, setting these children on a path to become whole and healthy adults. When Wilson started his dojo, he thought young Black boys needed more discipline, but quickly realized what they needed was more love. The film introduces us to four young recruits who are at a crossroads. Wilson challenges each of them to confront their unresolved anger, fear, anxiety, and lack of focus as they face the toughest decisions of their young lives. Welcome to Season 2, Episode 7 of the ESPN PRod Pod, the official podcast of the ESPN Communications Department. The PRod Pod takes you behind ESPN's unmatched storytelling by introducing the people behind the content – who they are, where they're from and how they create the magic. It's no mistake Kati Fernandez's LinkedIn “About” section includes this key line: “Purpose-driven teammate and leader.” It's something the Holy Cross graduate lives each and every day in her role as Director, Content Development & Integration at ESPN+ and ESPN Films.“What I pride myself in being cool at, is serving,” Fernandez tells PRod Pod host Jon McLeod. “I don't mind what we're doing. I know that I'm gonna be a great teammate, pick up the baton, look at other ways, figure out how I can be a better teammate, figure out how I can be a better employee, figure out how I can be a better daughter, sister, friend, colleague, insert the word there.”So, whether it's immersing herself in the emerging space of NFTs for a Tom Brady project in conjunction with ESPN+'s Man in the Arena or finding ways to expand the depth of storytelling within ESPN's “Fifty/50” Title IX inititative, Fernandez interacts with colleagues from all across Disney to ensure the amazing work being created is being creatively injected into all of the incredible platforms throughout the enterprise.Fernandez's interests are as varied as the content she interacts with as we learn in the concluding “Fab 5” segment which is guest-hosted by ESPN Summer 2022 Intern Katera Brewer. From a track and field itch Fernandez wishes she had scratched to her favorite “30 for 30” to important work in helping youth education in her native Dominican Republic, Fernandez fills her days fulfilling that promise of being a “purpose-driven teammate and leader.”And as she shares, “milestones come and go, but what stays is what we've planted.”Kati Fernandez on LinkedIn
When Title IX became law 50 years ago, just 37 words of legislation established gender equity in education and athletics. ESPN Films' new documentary series “37 Words” explores how that fight was won, and the impact it had across sports and society. In the first of four episodes with ESPN's head of W Studios Allison Glock, documentary director Dawn Porter breaks down how sports converged with the women's equality movement in the 60s and 70s. We focus on two icons: Gloria Steinem, the feminist author and activist, and former World No. 1 tennis champ and women's advocate Billie Jean King. Learn more about your ad choices. 54. Victoria Arlen - Accessible Voices “What am I doing? How do I do this? How do I get out of it? I think it's staying rooted in your empathy, love, joy, and gratitude, and sprinkling your faith amongst it all. I think those are big things...taking yourself out of the ego and being like, What do I want to give to this world? Because we only have a limited time here. So leave your impact, because we're all able to leave an impact here.” Victoria Arlen Guest Info: Victoria Arlen's life drastically changed in 2006 at the tender age of eleven when she developed two rare conditions known as Transverse Myelitis and Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis. Doctors believed there was little hope of survival and recovery was unlikely. Victoria, however was not ready to give up. In 2010 after almost four years she began the nearly impossible fight back to life. Learning how to speak, eat and move all over again. Victoria went on to exceedingly defy the odds and not only recovered but has since become an accomplished Motivational Speaker, Television Host and Swimmer. Her swimming resume includes three Silvers and a Gold medal from the London 2012 Paralympic Games as well as multiple World, American and Pan American Records. In April 2015, Victoria made the transition from professional athlete to sportscaster and joined ESPN as one of the youngest on air talents hired by the company and reports and hosts across all platforms. In the Spring of 2016 Victoria defied yet another odd and after spending nearly a decade in a wheelchair paralyzed from the waist down was able to learn how take one step after another and eventually not only did she learn how to walk but within a year and a half in the Fall of 2017 she learned to dance as a contestant on Season 25 of Dancing with the Stars. Victoria and her dance partner Val Chmerkovskiy quickly became fan favorites. Victoria is also carrying out her dream of helping others, serving as the Founder and Co-Chair of Victoria's Victory Foundation, a nonprofit that assists those with mobility challenges to achieve their own personal victory. Victoria's book titled Locked In hit stores worldwide in August of 2018 and in April of 2018 ESPN Films debuted a 30 for 30 titled “Locked In” based on Victoria's story at the Tribeca Film Festival. Interview with John Dahl. Simran Sandhu reports.
A note from Talking Taiwan host Felicia Lin: With major league baseball playoffs soon upon us, we thought that this episode might appeal to our baseball fans. It seems like a distant memory now, when about a month into the Coronavirus pandemic, Taiwan was the only place on the planet where live professional baseball was being played. My guest on this episode is Professor Andrew Morris whose research on baseball in Taiwan presents a fascinating new angle and way of seeing Taiwan’s history. I came across his writings and research when I when I was doing some research for my interview (episode 77) with Richard Wang the English-speaking broadcaster of CPBL games in Taiwan. How important is baseball to Taiwan? Did you know that there’s a baseball related image featured on Taiwan’s currency or that Taiwan’s little league baseball team won 17 times from 1979 to1996? Interestingly, Professor Morris began our interview by sharing his own mistaken assumption of baseball as a symbol of American culture in Taiwan. He went on to explain that baseball was introduced to Taiwan by Japan, while it was a colony of Japan from 1895-1945. We covered a broad range of topics including how baseball survived the arrival of the Kuomintang in Taiwan, the rise of Taiwan’s little league team, the establishment of a professional baseball league in Taiwan (CPBL) which has had its ups and downs, and the short-lived Taiwan Major League. Here’s a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: How Professor Morris got interested in the topic of baseball and the history of Taiwan How baseball in Taiwan is not as it seems on the surface, a symbol of American culture in Taiwan What were some of the most surprising and interesting things that Professor Morris has learned about baseball in Taiwan over the course of his research The role of Taiwan’s Indigenous people in the game of baseball in Taiwan What baseball tells us about Taiwan’s Japanese colonial era How Chiayi (嘉義) is known as the spiritual home of baseball and how that was captured in the film Kano How “Kano,” is the nickname of the old Chiayi Agricultural and Forestry Vocational High School, which comes from the two Japanese words “Ka-gi No-rin” The Kano baseball team became the best team in Taiwan and is remembered by the Japanese How Kano is remembered as an example of the success of Japan’s colonialism in Taiwan Baseball as a pathway for Indigenous peoples during Taiwan’s Japanese colonial period Professor Morris’ thoughts about the film Kano and its historical accuracy The Japanese influence that we still see in Taiwanese baseball today How after the Kuomintang arrived in Taiwan, around 1946, they tried to remove and erase Japanese culture, but baseball was allowed to remain What happened to baseball after the Kuomintang arrived in Taiwan How baseball games were played in the aftermath of the 228 massacre and a famous baseball coach was killed in the 228 massacre Taiwan’s little league baseball team and how it served to bolster Republic of China (ROC) nationalism The 1968 legend of what led Taiwan creating a little league team and participating in the little league world series How in 1969, the Taiwanese little league team played in the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, PA for the first time and won Between 1969-1996 the Taiwanese little league team won the Little League World Series 17 times and became a source of pride for the Taiwanese who watched the games late at night The story (from the 70s) of how a coach of a little league team comprised mostly of Black players sensed the anti-Chinese and anti-Taiwanese sentiment against the Taiwanese little league team How the Taiwanese little league team became a source of Taiwanese pride (different from ROC pride) How the KMT hired Chinatown thugs to beat up the pro-Taiwanese little league fans and fights would break out between them after little league games What happened to Taiwan’s little league team The legacy of Taiwan’s little league team How the American little league teams that were able to beat Taiwan’s little league team were celebrated an ESPN made a 30 for 30 film about this The story behind the image of the youth baseball team that appears on Taiwan’s 500 dollar bill The establishment of the CPBL and its game throwing and gambling scandals The short-lived Taiwan Major League (TML) and how it differed from the CPBL How baseball has been tied to Taiwan’s national identity in the past but that has changed as Taiwan has become more democratic The research that Professor Morris is working on now Professor Morris’ recommendations of other books on the subject of baseball in Taiwan Related Links: Professor Andrew Morris’ Cal Poly webpage: https://history.calpoly.edu/faculty/andrew-morris Professor Andrew Morris’ Digital Commons page (which has full text of some of his articles): http://bit.ly/ADMorrisDC Colonial Project, National Game: A History of Baseball in Taiwan (Asia Pacific Modern Book 6) by Andrew D. It's been called an invisible epidemic. On reservations across North America, Native American women are missing or murdered in rates ten times higher than the general population. But on one reservation, the women are learning to fight back, literally, by stepping into the boxing ring. On Montana's Blackfeet Reservation, the Blackfeet Nation Boxing Club teaches young women how to defend themselves both inside and outside the ring. It's all chronicled in a new documentary, "Blackfeet Boxing: Not Invisible," from ESPN Films. Kristen Lappas, who directed the documentary, reflects on her experiences, which airs at 3:30pm ET, this Sunday on ABC. Then, former NFL offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz shares his thoughts on DeSean Jackson's recent Anti-Semitic social media posts.

Beginning our 'Sports Innovator' series, Mike and Mark hit the court with Michael Jordan and listen to some of the most inspirational clips and mental models we can learn from 'His Airness'. By acclamation, Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time. Although, a summary of his basketball career and influence on the game inevitably fails to do it justice, as a phenomenal athlete with a unique combination of fundamental soundness, grace, speed, power, artistry, improvisational ability and an unquenchable competitive desire, Jordan single-handedly redefined the NBA superstar. How the f**k did Eve Wulf start out as an intern for Sports Illustrated and end up working for ESPN, helping produce films and miniseries including “The Last Dance” just a year later? Today, we’re chatting with Eve Wulf about her background in sports (she comes from a huge sports family with her dad being ESPN Senior Writer Steve Wulf and her twin sister playing hockey at Middlebury college). We also talk about her time at Bucknell University, where Eve was a research Intern at the Elias Sports Bureau and an editorial intern for Sports Illustrated. She also spent some time writing on campus and learned the importance of storytelling both in film and through writing. So how did Eve successfully make the jump from college into her first job at ESPN? And how do the Wulf twins compare when it comes to hockey?
Bennie Fowler and his brother Chris Fowler discuss their opinions on the sports documentary, The Last Dance by ESPN Films and Netflix. In the fall of 1997, Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls allowed a film crew to follow them as they went for their sixth NBA title in eight seasons. That resulted in a stunning portrait of one of the sport's most iconic athletes and a celebrated team. "The Last Dance" follows the Bulls' 1997-98 season from start to finish, while also covering the rest of the chapters in Jordan's remarkable career. The 10-part docuseries follows the Jordan timeline from when he was an emerging star on his high school team to becoming a worldwide marketing force and cultural figure. The series takes its name from a phrase coined by then-Bulls coach Phil Jackson, who knew that the season would likely be the final run for the core members of that 1990s Bulls dynasty.

In tennis, measurement – specifically, judging whether a ball is in or out – is particularly crucial. The new ESPN Films 30 for 30 Short, SUBJECT TO REVIEW takes a close look at not just the technology that’s been developed to determine the right calls with better accuracy, but the meaning and significance of that pursuit. The film, directed by Theo Anthony (“RAT FILM”) will air Sunday, Dec. 22, at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN. Tracing the history of photographic review back more than a hundred years, and chronicling controversial moments before and after the age of review in tennis, SUBJECT TO REVIEW explores the mechanisms of the cameras and computerized simulations that now serve as the final word on close calls – but also the limits of the veracity of those calls. Ultimately, it’s a story about technology in sports – but also a study of what we want from our machines, and our minds, well beyond any court of play. “’Subject to Review’ is about how some images are made and why they’re made that way,” said director Anthony. “It’s a film about the inescapable rift between the world and how we image that world. I hope that audiences can take this small exercise in critical curiosity beyond the world of tennis, giving audiences a little space to look differently at the world.” Theo Anthony joins us to talk about the complex relationship between flawed human judgement and the “certainty” of technology. “Subject to Review” has screened at New York Film Festival, Hamptons Film Festival, Vancouver Film Festival and Mar Del Plata Film Festival. About the Filmmaker – Theo Anthony is a writer, photographer, and filmmaker whose films have received premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival, Locarno International Film Festival, Rotterdam International Film Festival, and SXSW. His first feature, “RAT FILM,” was released by Cinema Guild in 2017 to critical acclaim. “Subject to Review” is produced by Sebastian Pardo and Riel Roch-Decter of MEMORY, an independent artist-driven studio specializing in producing and curating innovative, thought-provoking works that push the formal boundaries of their medium. Together, the duo has produced and distributed multiple award-winning fiction and non-fiction films. SUBJECT TO REVIEW will air on ESPN beginning Sunday, December 22, at 3 p.m. (Eastern) Social Media theoanthony.net twitter.com/ProxyTheo instagram.com/theodorejacobanthony https://vimeo.com/theoanthony

Just weeks after its sudden collapse, we take our first look at the brief life of the Alliance of American Football with Sports Illustrated football writer and MMQB NFL podcast host Conor Orr (The Curious Rise and Spectacular Crash of the Alliance of American Football; More Strange Tales from the Collapse of the AAF). Inspired by his work producing the 2017 documentary This Was the XFL for ESPN Films’ 30 for 30 series, director Charlie Ebersol concluded that the renegade league co-created by his father (NBC Sports producer Dick) and World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) impresario Vince McMahon in 2001 had actually been a viable concept, but poorly executed – especially the subpar quality of on-field play. After reportedly being rebuffed by McMahon to potentially revive the old XFL brand, Ebersol instead dove into planning for his nascent AAF – with the prime focus on solid football product; the “Alliance” formally announced its launch on March 20, 2018, and by June had more than 100 players under contract. What followed was months of methodical and seemingly well-conceived efforts to: construct a solid football operations infrastructure under veteran NFL executive Bill Polian (including top coaches like Steve Spurrier, Rick Neuheisel and Dennis Erickson); solicit investment from (supposedly) stable deep-pocketed investors (such as player-turned-entrepreneur-turned-NFL-owner Reggie Fowler); develop business-enhancing media, data and wagering technology to augment on-field play; and even devise evolved rules to speed up games and improve player safety. The AAF made its debut with two simultaneous Saturday evening games in San Antonio and Orlando on February 11, 2019 in front of a surprisingly large CBS national primetime TV audience – but the league’s operational wheels started coming off almost immediately. Chief among the issues: a Week One cash call that investor Fowler couldn’t cover, and a hastily-arranged $250MM majority equity investment from NHL Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon – who quickly concluded that operational finances were dangerously unstable, and likely unsustainable. After weeks of maneuvering, Dundon pulled the plug on further funding his pledge (rumored as only $70MM of the promised amount), announcing the suspension of the league’s operations on April 2nd – just two weeks shy of completing the regular season. 15 days later, the AAF filed for Chapter 7 (liquidation) bankruptcy. SI’s Orr walks host Tim Hanlon through the league’s chronology, the facts as we know them today, and what’s likely to come in the months ahead as the story of the AAF continues to play out. ESPN will debut competitive eating 30 for 30 this summer with ‘The Good, The Bad, The Hungry’ his past weekend, ESPN Films debuted a documentary directed by Nicole Lucas Haimes at the Tribeca Film Festival. Awful Announcing has since learned that The Good, The Bad, The Hungry will be released as a 30 for 30 installment and will air on July 2nd. That air date serves a nice promotional boost for the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating contest, which airs live on ESPN on July 4th. At this time, there is no trailer for the film, but the description of the film via Tribeca’s website is below. “America’s independence isn’t the only reason to celebrate on the 4th of July. For residents and visitors on Coney Island, the date is synonymous with the nationally televised Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, a.k.a. the “Super Bowl of competitive eating.” The annual frankfurter consumption extravaganza even has its own “Magic versus Bird”: Japan’s Takeru “Kobi” Kobayashi and Californian Joey Chestnut. Their rivalry is deeper than cooked franks and water-drenched buns. Kobi and Joey’s competition is the stuff of vintage sporting drama, hot dogs and all, tackling personal challenges and questions about what it means to be an “American hero.” In this documentary, filmmaker Nicole Lucas Haimes analyzes competitive eating’s most storied pair through lively and candid interviews with both competitors. She approaches an event that—let’s be frank—isn’t taken seriously by most people with earnestness and wide-eyed fascination, constructing both an insightful primer on a niche sport and an endearing humanization of two unconventional athletes.” The film is currently listed at 77 minutes, which means it would fit into a 90 minute window with commercials when it airs on ESPN. There have been a few installments that have premiered at Tribeca or other film festivals before airing on ESPN, including Catching Hell, which debuted at Tribeca in 2011.
How does an Oscar-winning, major sports network look at content creation and battle changing consumer priorities? Adam Neuhaus, Director of Development for ESPN Films and Original Content, discusses going from pitching ideas to hearing pitches, the nature of content through the lens of filmmakers, why ESPN took a revolutionary strategy and won, why story is first and sport is second, the need to take risks, and great ideas always win over whatever format in which they are presented. He joins hosts Natasha Cholerton Brown (COO of Clippn), Ritesh Gupta (Head of Content for Vayner Productions), and Michael Villasenor (Executive Creative Director of Product Design Experience for Hearst). Why the demand for quality storytelling has led to a rise in true crime and multi-part documentaries The explosion of content in recent years, and how that is likely to continue with Disney and Apple entering the video streaming service marketplace The role of gatekeepers of media, and the importance of curation and honing a brand The importance of the directorial “POV” voice in media, and how that directorial focus has been utilized by ESPN with 30 For 30 to let filmmakers tell the stories they want to tell How that unique and unpredictable element drives engagement from viewers and builds a following The importance of relationships in how Adam and ESPN Films’ approach to working with directors and documentary projects How ESPN Films initiates projects, from pitches being sent in to Adam and his team looking for people who have stories they want to tell Some of Adam’s favorite projects he’s worked on What Adam is doing to widen the aperture of ESPN Films’ scope to encompass athleticism, adventure, and competition in general, and not limited to strictly “sports” The “target goal” for ESPN Films, and how programming like 30 For 30 has broken beyond content made only for sports fans Adam brings in some nondairy allergen-friendly ice cream Adam’s career trajectory, from working at small production companies, to working at IFP, to the William Morris Agency (now WME), and Paradigm as he shifted gears from working with agencies towards working as a creative Why film is so important to Adam Adam’s path towards being a media developer, from being an assistant to a producer The importance of doing what it is you want to do, even if it’s starting on a small scale, as you play the long game towards the position you want Headsets and Highballs, the networking group Adam started back when he was working as an assistant, and how it has grown over the years Cord cutting, and how ESPN has reacted to this by embracing streaming and taking part in other network bundles, along with forward-thinking business ventures The new opportunities that streaming platforms provide to ESPN that would be impossible on a broadcast schedule Adam’s work at Radical Media and Original Media, working on indie films, branded content, YouTube channels, and reality TV, which prepared him to work at ESPN Films How Adam’s work in various areas of media has shaped the enthusiastic, honest, and respectful approach he brings to his job now Adam breaks down what makes (or breaks) a successful pitch that lands on his desk Plus, we get to know a little more about Adam, his career goals, his love for basketball, and how according to his 3rd grade report card, he hasn’t changed all that much!
Between the exhausting news cycle and the endless selection of complicated TV dramas to watch, we can all use a shot of lighter pop culture sometimes. This week, we discuss what we call our “pop culture pacifiers”—the short, sweet online videos, clips, and songs that lift our spirits in the middle of the hardest days—and “palette cleansers”—the rewatches and brain-candy TV and movies that allow us to relax and enjoy ourselves mindlessly. Hint: Jamie Foxx singing The Brady Bunch, a cat named Ravioli, Will & Grace reruns, and Queer Eye are involved. (Links to all of our online favorites are below.) In an effort to tell the comprehensive story of basketball in all its fascinating dimensions, two of the most well-respected basketball journalists working today, Jackie MacMullan and Rafe Bartholomew, collaborated with award-winning director, Dan Klores, to produce a groundbreaking book based on interviews with more than 170 of the sport’s all-time greats. The interviews, conducted by Klores and his team of producers for a multi-part ESPN Films series to be released in fall 2018, include legendary players, such as Bill Russell, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Magic Johnson; renowned coaches like Phil Jackson and Coach K; and numerous executives, commissioners, and journalists. Combing through nearly a thousand hours of conversations, MacMullan and Bartholomew compiled the candid stories and shaped them into what may become one of the most important basketball books ever written, Basketball: A Love Story. The book, which shares its title with the forthcoming ESPN Films series, surpasses other compilations in sheer volume and depth. With a narrative that is raw and intimate and digging deep into the vast web of basketball mystique, this engrossing portrait weaves together diverse tales of the sport’s remarkable rise from humble roots and sheds light on its unparalleled growth, transforming our understanding of the game. MacMullan and Bartholomew are in conversation with Bill Plaschke, sports columnist for The Los Angeles Times.

Award-winning British documentarian Daniel Gordon (Hillsborough; 9.79*; The Game of Their Lives) joins Tim Hanlon from London to discuss his new ESPN Films 30 for 30 feature George Best: All By Himself – and the enigmatic soccer star whose life story it depicts. Gordon reveals: Why he was attracted to the story of George Best, despite others’ previous attempts to tell it; How Best’s early-career interviews with the British media while at Manchester United became a hauntingly predictive narrative device for the film; Why the vibrantly ascendant mid-1970s North American Soccer League became an attractive alternative to Best’s post-ManU European wanderings; How the meteoric rise and subsequent fall of the NASL itself became a metaphor for Best’s life and career – including the irony of his Budweiser-sponsored NASL “Goal of the Year” in 1981; and The complex legacy Best left behind, despite his later-life admonitions to “remember the football.” This week’s episode is sponsored by Audible!
Chad Millman talks with Rose Eveleth from ESPN Films about the latest 30 for 30 podcast: A Queen of Sorts. Did Phil Ivey & Kelly cheat Vegas?
In this week’s episode, the boys welcome Ryan Stanger (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Dumbbells podcast) to the show to discuss “30 For 30: This Was The XFL”, the recent ESPN films documentary that examines the failed football league created by WWE chairman Vince McMahon and legendary NBC TV exec Dick Ebersol that lasted for one season. All of the most fascinating bits from the XFL are covered - from the much-hyped commercials, WWF cross-promotion and personalized jerseys, to the increasingly uneventful games, often shuffled personnel and technical disasters that earned the league national criticism. Then, in addition to football, the boys also talk about health, Soylent, Gatorade, marketing/image, and, of course, wrestling. Plus, Joey talks about how eating any food makes him “logy”, a word which is puzzlingly quite new to both Nick and Stephen. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Rod Smart (He Hate Me) of ESPN Films' 30 for 30 “This Was the XFL.” Three days before Super Bowl LI, ESPN Films will premiere the 30 for 30 documentary “This Was the XFL,” directed by Charlie Ebersol, chronicling the short-lived, ill-fated pro football league. The documentary, airing on February 2 at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN, tells the story in fascinating, candid, and often rollicking fashion featuring fellow television legends and close friends – Dick Ebersol and Vince McMahon. A bold challenge, a fearless experiment and ultimately, a spectacular failure. In 2001, sports entertainment titans Ebersol and McMahon launched the XFL. It was hardly the first time a league had tried to compete with the NFL, but the brash audacity of the bid, combined with the personalities and charisma of Ebersol and McMahon and the marketing behemoths of their respective companies -- NBC and WWE -- captured headlines and a sense of undeniable anticipation about what was to come. Bringing together a cast of characters ranging from the boardrooms of General Electric to the practice fields of Las Vegas, “This Was the XFL” is the tale of -- yes -- all that went wrong, but also, how the XFL ended up influencing the way professional team sports are broadcast today. And at the center of it all - a decades long friendship between one of the most significant television executives in media history and the one-of-a-kind WWE impresario. This film will explore how Ebersol and McMahon brought the XFL to life, and why they had to let it go.
