Abstract: A crucial skill in infant language acquisition is learning of the native language phonemes. This requires the ability to group complex sounds into distinct auditory categories based on their shared features. Problems in phonetic learning have been suggested to underlie language learning difficulties in dyslexia, a developmental reading-skill deficit. We investigated auditory abilities important for language acquisition in newborns with or without a familial risk for dyslexia with electrophysiological mismatch responses (MMRs). We presented vowel changes in a sequence of acoustically varying vowels, requiring grouping of the stimuli to two phoneme categories. The vowel changes elicited an MMR which was significantly diminished in infants whose parents had the most severe dyslexia in our sample. Phoneme-MMR amplitude and its hemispheric lateralization were associated with language test outcomes assessed at 28 months, an age at which it becomes possible to behaviourally test children and several standardized tests are available. In addition, statistically significant MMRs to violations of a complex sound-order rule were only found in infants without dyslexia risk, but these results are very preliminary due to small sample size. The results demonstrate the relevance of the readiness of newborn infants for phonetic learning for their emerging language skills. Phoneme extraction difficulties in infants at familial risk may contribute to the phonological deficits observed in dyslexia. Copy rights belong to original authors. J., Lainscsek, C., Comstock, L. B. Abstract: Electroencephalography (EEG) holds promise for brain-computer interface (BCI) devices as a non-invasive measure of neural activity. With increased attention to EEG-based BCI systems, publicly available datasets that can represent the complex tasks required for naturalistic speech decoding are necessary to establish a common standard of performance within the BCI community. Effective solutions must overcome various kinds of noise in the EEG signal and remain reliable across sessions and subjects without overfitting to a specific dataset or task. We present two validated datasets (N=8 and N=16) for classification at the phoneme and word level and by the articulatory properties of phonemes. EEG signals were recorded from 64 channels while subjects listened to and repeated six consonants and five vowels. Individual phonemes were combined in different phonetic environments to produce coarticulated variation in forty consonant-vowel pairs, twenty real words, and twenty pseudowords. Phoneme pairs and words were presented during a control condition and during transcranial magnetic stimulation targeted to inhibit or augment the EEG signal associated with specific articulatory processes. There are four kinds of thought.Verbal Thought is hearing a voice in your mind. Analytical Thought is deductive reasoning that seeks to forecast a result. Abstract Thought embraces fantasy and all things intangible. Symbolic Thought relates the unknown to the known. The pattern-recognition power of the right brain connects new ideas [abstract thought] with known information [analytical thought] in the deductive reasoning left brain. Symbolic Thought allows you to communicate the abstract by pointing to something familiar that shares an essential attribute with the abstraction you are trying to describe. This is the essence of all similes and metaphors. “This is the forest primeval. The murmuring pines and the hemlocks, bearded with moss, and in garments green, indistinct in the twilight, stand like Druids of old, with voices sad and prophetic…” – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Evangeline “murmuring…” “bearded…” “garments…” “Druids of old, with voices sad and prophetic…” We're talking about trees, remember? Symbols are a language of the mind. But that observation is just the beginning. I have no proof of what I am about to tell you. So if you continue to read, please understand that I will be sharing nothing more than a deeply held pet theory of mine. I can reference no sources other than 25 years of experimentation and my conversations with Indy. I believe the 4 types of thought are composed of 12 essential languages. Think of these 12 languages as the Operating System of the mind. I believe Numbers are a language of the mind. There are things that can be said in the language of Numbers that can be said in no other language. It is easier to learn mathematics when you think of Numbers as a language and the order of operations in math as the grammar and syntax of that language. I believe Color is a language. Red and pink say different things. Likewise, Shape is a language. A curve says something different than an angle. Arranging colors and shapes so they speak to us is the essence of composition in photos, paintings and illustrations. It is the basis of architecture, Feng Shui, and industrial design (cars, jewelry, furniture, etc.) In fact, it underlies every type of visual communication that causes people to think and feel a certain way. The human mind is given wings by its unique ability to attach complex meanings to sounds.When you use words, you are rapidly choosing which of the 44 Phonemes of the English language shares an essential attribute with the fractional abstraction you are trying to describe. Yes, the entirety of the English language is composed of just 44 sounds. This is not a pet theory of mine. This is settled science among the linguists of the world. When you speak or write, you are connecting Phonemes together in rapid succession to create words – sounds – that represent what you are trying to communicate. Did you know the written word has no meaning until it has been translated into the spoken word it represents? Graphemes, the letters of the alphabet and certain combinations of those letters like ch, sh, and th, merely represent the sounds – the phonemes – to which we attach deep meaning. Look again at ch, sh, and th. Don't say the names of the letters in your mind. Make the sounds that each of those two-letter combinations represent, “ch,” “sh,” “th” Did it occur to you that “th” has two different sounds? Voiced “th” is the sound we hear in “the”. Unvoiced “th” is the sound we hear in “with”. It is my belief that a basic understanding of the 12 Languages of the Mind will make you a better communicator. Indy Beagle gave you a glimpse of one of the Languages – Symbol – before he got carried away in today's illustration. And I gave you a glimpse of 4 of them: Number, Color, Shape, and Phoneme. I got back up after clearing it. In this episode, I explain what it means to clear something from your life. Our bodies act like radio towers and are picking up thoughts, feelings and emotions all the time. We are infinite beings with infinite knowing. Consciousness is a choice and when we're living in tru consciousness, we are one with life. Abstract: To evaluate the potential of intracortical electrode array signals for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) to restore lost speech, we measured the performance of classifiers trained to discriminate a comprehensive basis set for speech: 39 English phonemes. We classified neural correlates of spoken-out-loud words in the "hand knob" area of precentral gyrus, which we view as a step towards the eventual goal of decoding attempted speech from ventral speech areas in patients who are unable to speak. Neural and audio data were recorded while two BrainGate2 pilot clinical trial participants, each with two chronically-implanted 96-electrode arrays, spoke 420 different words that broadly sampled English phonemes. Phoneme onsets were identified from audio recordings, and their identities were then classified from neural features consisting of each electrode's binned action potential counts or high-frequency local field potential power. We also examined two potential confounds specific to decoding overt speech: acoustic contamination of neural signals and systematic differences in labeling different phonemes' onset times. A linear decoder achieved up to 29.3% classification accuracy (chance = 6%) across 39 phonemes, while a recurrent neural network classifier achieved 33.9% accuracy. Parameter sweeps indicated that performance did not saturate when adding more electrodes or more training data, and that accuracy improved when utilizing time-varying structure in the data. Microphonic contamination and phoneme onset differences modestly increased decoding accuracy, but could be mitigated by acoustic artifact subtraction and using a neural speech onset marker, respectively. The ability to decode a comprehensive set of phonemes using intracortical electrode array signals from a nontraditional speech area suggests that placing electrode arrays in ventral speech areas is a promising direction for speech BCIs. Monster Zero is in the works! I believe I've mentioned looking into Phoneme databases, to use with the fungi biodata? Well, here we have some mycorrhizal fungi triggering numbers. As if it is counting out otherworldly lottery numbers, or perhaps numerical sequence end dates? ;p Actually, it is simpler than that! I was gifted a MicroFreak (Arturia)for use in an upcoming installation. This little synth has so many features! It is super fun, you can sculpt your own custom sounds, it is polyphonic, etc., etc. Here I had the fungi triggering a counting sequence, randomly. Fed into a Red Panda Particle (LOVE!). On this episode our guests are David Shook and Anthony Seidman along with Mijail Lamas and Sergio Eduardo Cruz. And, in fact, this is a unique episode of The People with David and Anthony standing in as guest hosts for our first ever all spanish language episode of La Gente. If you don't know David Shook, he's the editor of a wonderful press here in Los Angeles, Phoneme Media, and Anthony is a poet and translator also here in Los Angeles. They'll tell you more about themselves and our/their guests Mijail and Sergio at the beginning of the show. First, we'll ease in to this all Spanish episode with poetry by Roberto Castillo Udiarte including translation by Anthony Seidman from Roberto's new book Smooth Talking Dog on Phoneme, this recording was made during Open Press at Insert Blanc this past October 2016 and we'll hear an excerpt from the poem The Magician of the Mirrors Final Show. Während Daniel im Rosa Slip symmetrisch auf auf dem Bett liegt, versucht Paula, Bill „Fucking“ Murray zu erreichen, um ihm einen asymmetrischen Oscar für seinen Werbespot als Zeitreisender zu überreichen. Guess who made a new podcast? Der Spätfilm wandelt mit Jetlag durch Tokyo und entdeckt dabei goldene Himbeeren, rassistische Tendenzen, einen doppelten Diss gegen Roger Moore, Phoneme, lauter Hintern, eine unterschwellige Liebe und die Langsamkeit. Hoffentlich ohne in ein Übersetzungsdilemma zu geraten, haben wir Lost in Translation besprochen.

Für den kindlichen Spracherwerb (L1-Phonemerwerb) werden Grundzüge eines Modells entwickelt, das auf die Annahme von angeborenen Regeln verzichtet und von einer Selbststeuerung des Prozesses ausgeht, der durch die kognitive Entwicklung, die Entdeckung kausaler Beziehungen, vorangetrieben und durch die Perzeption eigener und fremder Lautäußerungen über eine immanente Abstandsregelung innerhalb eines begrenzten artikulatorischen und phonologischen Raumes gesteuert wird. Die Silbe wird in diesem Prozess als kleinste Lauteinheit angenommen, aus der sich onto- und phylogenetisch Phoneme über die Bildung von Schnittmengen als nützliche illusionäre Einheiten herausbilden (herausgebildet haben). Da der Spracherwerb des Kindes nicht als Lernprozess verstanden wird, sondern primär als Ausbildung eines eigenständigen Systems, das durch die Perzeption der Zielsprache beeinflusst, aber nicht ursächlich gesteuert wird, wird auf alle Vergleiche zwischen kindlichen Lautäußerungen und ihnen zuzuordnenden Lautäußerungen der Zielsprache verzichtet. Diese Zuordnung wird kritisch gesehen, da semantisch ebenfalls nur von Schnittmengen zwischen kindlichen Lautäußerungen und denen der Zielsprache auszugehen ist. Die Ergebnisse der quantitativen Untersuchung von zwei Korpora werden als Indiz für die Annahme gewertet, dass der Entwicklungsprozess des Phonemsystems strukturell dem organischen Wachstum in der belebten Natur ähnelt, z. B. dem eines Baumes.

These sounds can be confusing, because about 150 words are spelled the same in UK and US English, but are pronounced differently. For example, "path," "chance," and "example" are pronounced with /a/ in the UK and /ae/ in the US. On the other hand, a single "o" is usually pronounced /a/ in the US. For example, words such as "shopping," "hot," and "clock" are pronounced with /a/ sound. Please listen and practice the sounds and sentences on the podcast. The tongue twister is something I simply made up on my own...maybe you'll find it easy, maybe difficult. Give it a try!

Performed by the ORF Symphonieorchester (dir. Mario Venzago) at the festival Musikprotokoll on 11 Oct 1991 in Graz. In Essls Orchesterstück werden die vom Computer errechneten zeitlichen Strukturen einer Handvoll musikalischer Charaktere unter des Komponisten Feder zu einer umfangreichen Klangwelt aufgefächert. Diese skelettartigen Charaktere einer heißt "Schatten" und besteht in Impuls und klanglichem Nachzittern, ein anderer heißt "Feld" sind als Reinform, in der sie das digitale Environment der Essl'schen Software liefert, gar nicht vorstellbar, sie bedürfen erst der Interpretation, um Musik zu werden. Erst diese Interpretation macht die Unterschiede der drei Abschnitte nachhörbar, wenngleich jene bereits bei der Programmierung des Computers angestrebt wurden. Oberstes Gebot ist jedoch das subjektive Reagieren des Komponisten auf den Prozeß des Werkes, der die Komposition interaktiv lenkt. Essl: "Ähnliche Konstellationen können sich so aufgrund des bereits zurückgelegten Weges und den dabei gewonnenen Erfahrungen als neuartige Gestalten manifestieren". Essl komponiert sein Werk, als höre er es zum ersten Mal, das Hoffen auf die Individualität der Hörer entspringt mithin dem Vertrauen auf die eigene. Die musikalischen Charaktere irren im Abschnitt "In Girum" quer durch die Instrumente eine geräuschbetonte Musik, in der metallene Schläge der umfangreichen Perkussion am ehesten den Kern eines Charakters markieren. Die stotternden Einsätze in den durchweg solistisch geführten Orchestergruppen sind zwar ein Merkmal der gesamten Partitur, hier aber entbehren sie jeglicher Linearität. Somit entsteht eine strömende Klangwelt, deren Farben verschwimmen. In "Imus" dagegen werden die Liegeklänge vor allem rhythmisch interpretiert, was zunächst klarere Strukturen suggeriert. Diese aber sind wiederum in verwirrender Weise auf das gesamte Orchester verteilt und zudem mit Vokabeln aus "In Girum" durchmischt. Erst in "Nocte" erlaubt Essl die Konzentration auf seine Vokabeln, ihre Phoneme werden bedächtig aneinandergereiht. Der Name der Nacht ist durchbuchstabiert (Christoph Becher).
