He's worked with Biggie Smalls, J Dilla, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Lauryn Hill and even once told me that MF DOOM shared his studio for a while. Brian actually grew up in Limerick, before getting a degree in NCAD in Dublin and moving to California in 1990 to attend California Institute of the Arts. It was here he became immersed in hip hop culture as it was beginning to really blossom and his professor Mike Davis encouraged him to combine his interest in politics, hip hop and photography and eventually Brian published ‘It's Not About A Salary - Rap and Resistance in LA'. It featured conversations and photos of Dr Dre, Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Cypress hill and more and was one of the first books documenting west coast hip hopIf you look close enough brian's imprint is everywhere. Hip Hop Heads will no doubt be familiar with DJ Shadow's Entroducing, the album is in the guinness world book of records for being the first record to be made completely out of samples. The iconic artwork shows producer Chief Xcel and rapper Lyrics Born digging for records and was of course shot by Brian. In this episode we talk about his new film about The Supremes which is shot in Ireland, his legendary documentary Brasilintime and working with legends like Madlib.Make sure to subscribe it helps a lot ❤️Shout out to RiRa for sponsoring this season of the podcast - https://www.ri-ra.beer/Shout out to WHIPITCONALL on making the jingle for the podcast check him out here: / whipitconall Shout out to DryLane Studios for letting us use their spaceFollow me:https://www.tiktok.com/@deeeemurphhttps://www.instagram.com/mabfield/Follow Brian:https://instagram.com/bpleasel Hosted on Acast. I originally heard Orla's story at the Sport Ireland Women in Sport Coaching event in late 2022 and was inspired by the efforts of her coaches to keep her involved and included in all sports. Orla has experienced spiralling ankle injuries however is back to her peak as she finished 4th in the 2023 World Championships in Paris with a PB of 12.14. Her performance earned a spot in the 2024 Paralympics games. Orla is refreshingly honest as we discuss her journey to date, the incredible coaches she has had from a young age, identity as an athlete, balancing athletics & art and so much more. It was such a pleasure recording with Orla and I'm looking forward to keeping up with her journey!  Enjoy

Co Laois man Brendon Deacy (58) arrived at the Burning Man festival in the northern Nevada desert prepared for heat and dust – not the heavy rain that fell on the last weekend of the nine-day counterculture jamboree. The artist and NCAD lecturer tells In the News about arriving in the camper van with his four grown-up children, how the festival lived up to his expectations, and more – and how the media made a drama out of a mini-crisis. Yes, it rained but the festival went on, with mud underfoot and a bit of unexpected discomfort. In the end, the man burned. Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by Declan Conlon. Hosted on Acast. You'll notice the repetition of a prior episode title, but there's just cause for this repetition, and it's just cause I want to. But also because the guest is another Peter, but not just ANY Peter, it's the Peter that is the reason I'm Peter O' Hanlon Jnr. (Like Robert Downey and his son, except without the troubled past and billion dollar franchise. Yes, my dad disgraces us with his presence on the podcast during a routine visit back to Cavan.  We talk through how we first me (in a hospital, lots of screaming) and what it was like living together (in a house, lots of screaming). Dad gales and regales me with stories from his past, doing us all a favour and shutting down NCAD for 11 days and adventures in haunted houses over in Dallas. Morna and Ross drop in on a call to discuss the rite of passage that a ‘numny' from Dad is and then we talk through Dad's incessant desire to erect sheds and direct plays. Eventually we turn our attention towards the segments where poor dad comes a cropper with some rearing senility that returns for the sign off. After father and son'ing our way through Sonic Seconds, Second Best and Word On The Street we get to Acoustic Corner and Dad whips out his classic, 16 Tonnes. (There's a second performance of another household favourite but thats only for the Patreon members). My mother elects to make a cameo appearance to set the record straight and recommends we listen to the national anthem so we can wrap up. This episode is a family affair that could've gone worse.

Today Nicole is joined by Laura Chambers, founder of Laura Chambers Cashmere. The two are going to be discussing her brand, why she set it up, and all the background and advice she can give to help you when it comes to starting and scaling your business. Listen in to find out the best advice Laura has ever received and the challenges she faced in the fashion industry.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Laura Chambers Cashmere began when Laura started casually knitting for herself after she closed her womenswear boutique, Tulle, Dublin, back in 2008. Laura ordered some yarn and started making pieces for herself on her knitting machine, which was last used when Laura was studying for a BA in fashion in NCAD in Dublin. This grew to knitting for family and friends and in 2016 she decided to take it to the next level and Laura Chambers the brand was born. Laura uses the finest quality Scottish Cashmere from Todd & Duncan in all of her pieces. Todd and Duncan is a long-established mill that dates back to 1867 and they were among the first to start spinning fine cashmere fibre. The cashmere they use originates from mountain dwelling goats that have adapted to the extreme temperatures of the Gobi Desert. Colour is really important to Laura and to her customers so she picks the most flattering and vibrant colours she can find. She gets inspiration from themes like glam rock or colours she sees out in nature. Green sells really well especially in the Irish market.  Because Laura Chambers Cashmere knit locally, they can actually adjust things for their customers, giving them a more bespoke premium experience and maximising customer satisfaction. It's about 50/50 made to order.  The best piece of business advice Laura ever received was to do the Sive O'Brien three step brand magic course. Her advice really helped Laura take her business to the next level through Identifying her ideal customers.  When it comes to influencers and gifting, you have to target the right people whose followers align with your brand. Just because someone has more followers that doesn't mean it will generate more or even any sales.  BEST MOMENTS ‘If you can hear the knitting machine then don't come in'  ‘I don't over think the business side because I've been around long enough' ‘It's a beautiful quality and I wouldn't compromise on that at all'  ‘You need to find out who your customer is, what she likes and what she wants' ‘Your business isn't viable if you're not selling' EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.laura-chambers.com/ Instagram laurachambers_cashmere  SIVE OB Brand Marketing And Communications Consultant ABOUT LAURA CHAMBERS CASHMERE “Laura Chambers - feel good cashmere, hand loomed in Dublin using the highest quality Scottish and Italian cashmere to elevate and colour your everyday. The Digital Hub and the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) have once again partnered to explore important societal themes with the launch of a series of talks, titled Turning Ground. The hybrid series will launch on Thursday May 26th and will also be broadcast on NCAD's YouTube channel. The series will focus on socio-ecological futures in urban environments and will include talks and workshops with international and national experts. This is the second year of events co-curated by The Digital Hub and NCAD, following last year's highly successful Digital Cultures webinar series. Digital Hub and NCAD collaborate with Turning Ground The Turning Ground series aims to create a space that brings artists, local communities, activists and academics together to discuss how creative ecologies and socio-ecological futures can be supported in an urban environment, particularly focusing on the Dublin 8 area. The series is convened by The Digital Hub's current Artist-in-Residence Seoidín O'Sullivan and NCAD lecturer and artist Gareth Kennedy. Focusing on creative urban ecologies, the series of talks and workshops will focus on a range of topics including art and critical ecological practice, local Dublin 8 community ecological projects, urban city toolkits for climate justice, permacultures, and urban ecological mapping. Turning Ground will bring a fresh perspective on issues such as local ecologies, climate and the environment, with international speakers including Panagiota Kotsila (Barcelona Lab for Urban Environmental Justice and Sustainability), Margaretha Haughwout (Colgate University), Sinead Mercier (UCD Sutherland School of Law), and Mojisola Adebayo (Queen Mary, University of London) & Nicole Wolf (Goldsmiths, University of London). The first talk on May 26th will hear from The Digital Hub's Artist in Residence, Seoidin O'Sullivan and NCAD's Gareth Kennedy. They will be joined by Austin Campbell from Dublin 8's Robert Emmet Community Development Project to discuss the importance of ecological projects in a local community setting. The talk will draw from themes including greening urban areas, gentrification and the housing crisis. The series of events are free to attend and registration for events will be available on the NCAD and The Digital Hub websites. The Digital Hub Fiach Mac Conghail, CEO of The Digital Hub said: “We are delighted to be partnering with NCAD for a second year with the Turning Ground series. The relationship we have with our environment and ecology surrounding us is an important consideration for future urban planning and sustainable communities. Our location in the heart of the Liberties offers us a strong focus on supporting ecological and community projects and in particular how artists can support this process. We have been able to further this through our current Artist-in-Residence, Seoidín O'Sullivan, along with the range of community initiatives we facilitate and take part in.” NCAD Professor Sarah Glennie, Director, NCAD said: “We are delighted to launch the Turning Ground series alongside The Digital Hub, in what is a continuation of last year's Digital Cultures series. The partnership builds on stakeholder participation at the intersection of artistic and transdisciplinary practice, research and society. At a time when climate and the environment is critical to our futures, we look forward to hearing the divergent thoughts and discussions during the series that will have an impact on our attitudes towards ecological areas in urban environments.” Turning Ground Series Information and Dates Event Locations: National College of Art and Design (NCAD), 100 Thomas Street, Dublin D08 K521, Ireland and iD8 Studio, The Gatelodge, The Digital Hub, Dublin 8, D08 EY05. We first heard LOU's music at the start of 2021, as he self released his feel good house tracks entitled 'Nature Tool' and 'Forest Void', which prompted us to get in touch with the young producer to request to premiere one of his next tracks, such was our love for his sound. Hailing from the small town of Portarlington, Laois, LOU is a 23-year-old Irish DJ & producer, who like most, began his DJ career playing locally, running club nights and parties in his hometown, while playing raves and club nights across the Midlands. Upon arriving in NCAD for college in Dublin, he went on to create the NCADJ Society with fellow rave confederate Lorcan Rush, throwing regular 'anything goes' parties on campus and across venues in Dublin. This helped open the door for him to start playing solo at club nights in the city and beyond, featuring in spaces such as Hangar (R.I.P), Wigwam, Berlin D2, Button Factory and The Grand Social where he appeared alongside the likes of Or:la, Saoirse, Cromby & Long Island Sound to name just a few. 3 years ago, LOU made the decision to venture into production, using his spare time from college work to get to grips with Ableton. In December of 2019 he began releasing music and since the pandemic hit he has been using the lockdowns to hone in on his craft, experimenting with different styles and learning new techniques. His most recent productions have been of a house and breakbeat nature, taking influence from productions of the 90's and the more euphoric sounding modern day releases. You can check out LOU's track 'Jowai Resort' which we premiere today via our SoundCloud. LOU has kindly given us this to us as a free download, so help yourself to a copy. 19 year old Drag Queen Faux Joli is a regular performer at The George Nightclub in Dublin City as well as a fashion student in NCAD. This podcast is hilarious and has to be heard to be believed. I cannot even do Faux any justice in describing how incredible it is. Faux started Drag as soon as she possibly could, a few days before her 18th birthday (as there's an 18+ age restriction in most drag venues) and has been developing her art ever since. She is widely regarded as one of the most promising young Drag Queens in the game, but this comes as no surprise when you hear of the creative thought, planning, sewing and choreography that is channeled into each and every one of her performance. Drag is her passion and her career. Ms. Joli reveals her personal drag stories, from her first performance, perceptions from others, support from her family, attitude of other Queens and her drag mother. When I announced I was recording with Faux, her brother replied to my Instagram story story 'That's my little brother!...There are yellow feathers all over my house'.That's when I knew this one was going to be a special one. I have an overwhelming respect for Drag, and what it represents. I really hope you all love this podcast.
