Hellooooooooooo and welcome back to a psychology mama's episode! If you grew up in the '90s or early 2000s, you probably remember it well — low-rise jeans, calorie-counting, and the constant message that thinness equaled beauty, success, and self-worth. Many of us internalised those messages before we even understood them. We learned to shrink ourselves — literally and figuratively — to fit into a version of ‘enough' that was never really about health or happiness. Now, as adults — and for some of us, as parents — we're starting to unlearn it. We're beginning to ask: What if our bodies were never the problem? What if we could break the cycle, not just for ourselves but for the next generation?Thinness was never the real goal — it was approval, love, and belonging. I don't want my child to grow up believing that her body is a problem to be solved. In this episode, we're diving into toxic body culture, the lingering effects of diet culture, the rise of the ‘almond mom,' and what it really means to raise children — and ourselves — in a world that still hasn't made peace with body diversity. I'm not just raising a child. I'm re-raising myself. This is personal, powerful, and deeply necessary. Let's talk about it.”You can find more of us here: Our Online Psychology practice: Did you know we have online appointments available with our amazing therapists Lisa or Maddie. We've all heard about Ozempic. But there are the GLP-1s we colloquially call “Ozempic” (see also: Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound) and then there's the cultural role of Ozempic. Given the price of these drugs, barriers to access, and class implications of weight stigma, this topic presents a unique opening to talk about inequality in health outcomes and the profitable business of individualizing social problems. In part one of this rare two-part series, we're covering: The wage penalties associated with (and relationship between) weight and women, and the parallels between the American attitudes about thinness and wealth The Danish pharma company that put Europe's entire economy on its back A conversation with a 12-year veteran of drug and device advocacy who said some of the surrounding issues represent, and I quote, “everything wrong with health policy in our country,” especially given the shortages, costs, and online pharmacies springing up to bridge that gap with non-FDA-approved solutions Let's take a peek at the inside the business of weight loss drugs, and join us here next week for part two. Now they want their teens, 14 year old Jeremiah and 16 year old Demi, to do the same. Should children be on the GLP-1 drug for weight loss? Gynecologist Dr. Jaime Seeman says absolutely not. In this podcast episode, Victoria Kleinsman talks about overcoming the fear of weight gain. She shares her personal struggles with this fear and offers practical tips on how we can move past it to live fuller, happier lives. Main discussion points: - Weight gain is often seen as a marker of personal failure in society. This breeds deep fears in many people (Victoria shares that she'd rather have died than gain weight). - The fear manifests in behaviours like chronic dieting, bingeing-purging cycles, obsessive weighing, etc. But these approaches rarely work long-term. - Fear of weight gain is not innate; it's learned. It links to deeper fears of being unloved and rejected. - The fear can become self-fulfilling - stress promotes fat storage. Fear of weight gain causes stress leading to actual weight gain. - Shift focus to self-care habits that gradually diffuse the fear - pursuing passions, spending time with body-positive people, speaking kindly to yourself. - Understand that you can live happily at many weights. Chasing thinness often sacrifices what truly matters - intimacy, meaning, fulfillment. Key quotes: "I would rather have died than gain weight." [00:01:39] "We think we'll be better when we're thinner. It's time to claim back your worthiness, my love." [00:08:30] "Thinness is not an innate human need. Love and acceptance is." Chrissy King is BACK for her second round on the pod. This time, we're diving deep into the intricate ways diet culture, body autonomy, dating culture, and yes, even childless cat ladies, are all connected. I promise there's a through-line here—and it's more liberating than any “hot girl summer” meme you've ever scrolled past. Some of the things we chat about... What is on Chrissy's Plate How she is accepting rest as a part of achievement How we can think of rest as a privilege and as freedom Childless cat ladies and being child-free by choice The parallels between dating culture and diet culture What Chrissy means when she says she is decentering men in her life The choice to not have children Why chasing men is like chasing thinness Breaking free of rules for how to live as a "good" woman Liberation beyond the body How to know what we want and choose that No longer organizing our life around our appearance Reclaiming time and energy from chasing what isn't meant for us And so much more! Pretty much perfect - https://erickimphotography.com/blog/2024/09/24/iphone-pro-desert-titanium-review-matte-bronze-is-lit/ # In Praise of Thin I was really curious about the new iPhone pro, and the upgraded camera etc. And also, I currently have a pitch for Apple TV Apple TV+ on the art of street photography, pretty much imagine Anthony Bourdain traveling the world in exotic places, shooting street photography, talking to locals experiencing the local culture etc. But this will all be done by Eric Kim. Anyways, I thought before I actually put anything, I should get the new iPhone pro shot. I picked one up at the Apple Century City Mall in LA, show it to my friend Antonio who helped me out. Got it in the desert bronze, titanium. Love it! Anyways, these are my honest thoughts: First, you have to put the iPhone pro on a diet. My suggestion to Apple designers and all of Apple corporation is the goal of every single new iPhone pro should be to make it lighter and thinner. Specifically thinner. Funny enough I would prefer I have your device which is thinner rather than a fatter device which is lighter. > Thinness is supreme Even as a random note, I'm currently considering purchasing some new weightlifting plates, and you could purchase these steel calibrated weightlifting plates, which are thinner, more compact and stronger. And much heavier and more dense. To me the philosophy is super interesting because iron, while it is cheaper, is fatter takes up more space etc. And I think in the long term, it doesn't hold up as well to corrosion as steel does. So **if you want to become the next Carnegie, invest in steel**. Anyways, the critical issue here is I was using the iPhone pro, I used to a lot yesterday, test out the Camera, ChatGPT voice dictation and recognition etc., used Apple Maps for driving directions etc., FaceTime call etc., and my honest assessment is for the most part, it is a perfect device. I think Apple really nailed it this time. Yet, my ultimate interesting Takeaway point is once I have discovered perfect and I have perfect, I realize that I actually don't need perfect, I don't need the best or perfect device, because **I am the ultimate perfect device**. And also the critical issue here is even if you have the new new new iPhone Pro, you're already behind. Why? It is going to get outdated and what 6 to8 months? At this point, everything is becoming so hyper. **Ain't nothing lasts anymore**. And also, one of my really big thoughts is if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And better yet, if it ain't broke, don't upgrade it! The reason why I think this is such a critical thought is often what we techies do is we are always jerking off and waiting for the newest iPhone iPhone Pro, the newest Apple device to come out, and revolutionize ourselves, our mindset, our workflows, etc. And as a consequence, we do these fundamental tricks like we end up giving our older devices to our mothers, hand me down to our siblings, family members, maybe friends, etc. So we have an excuse to upgrade to the newest device, without any feelings of guilt. ## Only poor people trade in their devices or cars People are stupid. I'm starting to think critically more and more, am I the only wise one when it comes to money? For example, I could stay with pride that in my whole adult life, I am 36 years old, I have never purchased a car that cost more than $2500 USD? I think that might be one of the number one secrets to becoming rich, and actually more critically… Staying rich, and becoming richer. Even something that's very interesting, my brother-in-law Gabe, whose family is super rich, all of the Kids Just Dr., Ford fusions? And even though my brother-in-law‘s dad is a super major Tesla investor, he owns a lot of Tesla stock, for his own family, he only purchased them super super bass Tesla model three cars, and also, he didn't pay the all cash, even though he could, but rather… He's financing it, so **he could just use the cash available right now to invest?**

The pursuit of thinness and the obsession with diet culture are deeply intertwined. To keep thinness relevant, it is continually marketed in new and increasingly subtle ways. Currently, there's a fresh approach to glorifying thinness, designed to perpetuate its importance in our society. It's crucial to discuss this so we can become aware of what's happening behind the scenes and understand how it impacts us. Bodies Series. Episode #3 of 3. The modern history of the body is marked by the coinciding pathologization of fatness AND the elevation of a new thin ideal. But one can make the argument that even after fatness was pathologized (deemed medically or psychologically abnormal), it was not necessarily stigmatized in any systematic way UNTIL its opposite quality- thinness-- took on new and important meanings of its own. In this sense, it's not fatness whose meaning changes with time so much as that of THINNESS. As was made clear in this episode's prequel, The History of Fat: The Complex Attitudes Toward Fatness in the Pre-Modern West, fatness has always been complicated- at some times accepted, even admired, and at other times criticized and a source of revulsion. In response to gender crises, technological advancement, and anxieties about modernity, twentieth-century beauty standards came to worship thinness in ways that were completely unheard of in premodern times. What if we gave you permission to eat whatever you wanted to? Would you find it difficult to reprogram that little voice inside my head saying "put down the cookie?" Lol. You know, over the decades, women have been fed a LOT of negative body image narratives. We are forced to believe that our worth centers around looking thin, having a perfect figure, or is equated to a number on the scale. Raise your hand if you've ever felt pressure to eat a certain way and look a certain way and if YOU associate YOUR self-worth to "Thinness"! If you feel this way YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Our guest today, Elizabeth Harris, states that girls as young as 3 have been shown to be aware of their body image. She is here to teach us that there is truly a better way. Elizabeth is a registered dietitian, certified Intuitive Eating counselor, speaker, entrepreneur, and co-host of the podcast Wellness Rebranded. She's passionate about empowering people to drop out of diet culture and reimagine their relationship with food, movement, and their bodies so they can prioritize their whole health with Intuitive Eating, gentle nutrition, and body image healing. Elizabeth's motto is “self-care, not self-control.” Because food is meant to be enjoyed, movement should make you happy, and we've all got better things to do than counting carbs or calories! This is sooo true, Elizabeth! Please teach us!! I mean, she even calls the practice of intuitive eating a self-care framework. Well, we all know that's where we both fall down on the job! lol Let's be honest, Shelby, is notoriously bad at self-care practices. And, well...Trinity loves herself so much that she's willing to eat an entire box of Girl Scout cookies to prove it. Lol But, Elizabeth shows us that this is NOT self-care or intuitive eating either. Instead, initiative eating IS living in atunement with your body and is a blend of instinct, emotion and thought. In this episode, Elizabeth teaches us: Intuitive eating is a blend of instinct, emotion, and thoughts and would be what eating were like if diet culture didn't exist and we listened to our bodies instead. Guilt is not a food group, we all have a right to eat things we enjoy. One of the principles of Intuitive Eating is to have unconditional permission to eat any food you want in atunement with your body and it's cues. Diet culture is a pressure to eat a certain way, exercise a certain way and look a certain way so that we begin to equate self-worth with the way we look and health with being thin. These are false narratives we need to let go of. Intuitive eating starts with examining your own relationship with food. "Challenge your own food police". What are the rules that you follow when it comes to food. Making a list of these rules when they pop into your head can give you an understanding of this relationship The first step to implementing an intuitive eating philosophy is to start by setting up a consistent eating schedule by eating your meals at the same time every day. In this way you'll become more aware of fullness and hunger cues. For more of Elizabeth: Website | elizabethharrisnutrition.com Facebook | elizabethharrisnutrition And we loved this conversation because life in the middle is also a blend of instinct, emotion, and thought and we believe these drive not just EATING but, literally, everything we do. How are you feeling about your life these days? Have you ever felt stuck, like you don't know who you are anymore? If the answer is yes...you're not alone! Meet us in "The Middle" at dearmidlife.com to join our community for women in midlife just like you. Here you can build connection and find space to be honored where you are!

I met Philippe Block while studying historic masonry structures in Spain last summer. He presented his work and I was blown away. He is a pioneering structural engineer who, as part of his research group Block Research Group, is inventing the future of sustainable construction by blending old knowledge and precedent with new technology, materials and innovation. He's BUILDING off of thousands of years of architectural innovation and deepening our knowledge of how structures really work, with stunning results. And what makes it so impressive is he isn't just doing this in a research lab somewhere--though that is where the ideas are refined--he's implementing them in the real world. Not only is that very difficult to do, overcoming all the obstacles, it also takes a tremendous amount of courage. When I say "the building industry is broken," as I often do, what Phillipe is doing is part of the solution--he's part of pioneering and inventing the future that doesn't exist yet. Enjoy! In this solo episode, we're talking all about the craze behind Ozempic and of course, catching up with our girls. Kristina spills the tea about her bougie Aspen brand trip, meanwhile, Raeann had a much-needed low-key week. Kristina and Raeann chat about how drastically different their lives are now as Kristina talks about how special her first mother-son dance (aka rave) was. Raeann opens up about not feeling settled and her current existential crisis that she's been trying to navigate. As for pop-culture references, we're watching Summer House, binging The Traitors, and wondering where is Kate Middleton hiding! And we're taking a poll — should Kristina be on The Real Housewives of New Jersey? We've allll heard about it, seen ads for it, or know someone who's on it. Yes, we're talking about Ozempic, Wegovy, semaglutide. While some are tempted by its promises of thinness and a lack of food noise, others raise concerns about its long-term effects and the added societal pressure to conform to a narrow beauty ideal. We have made monumental strides forward as a society in the body-positive movement but overnight we've taken steps backward. Raeann mentions her fashion collaborations have dropped due to their lack of larger sizes available. A woman's Roman Empire is their body and weight, so when praising and parading around this ideal that thinness is only a few injections away, this may have a negative effect on people in larger bodies and promote a negative stigma. There are so many sides and things to take into account with these drugs so by no means are we judging you if you are on them. Amidst this weight loss trend, we hope there's a refocus on what really matters which is feeling and being healthy, nourishing your body, and loving the body you're in, instead of constantly chasing a thinner body. "I want to be thinner." Have you said it? Have you thought it? It's a reality that many of us face because culture tells us that thinness is what we should desire and our culture values the way we look only if we are thin. Today, Heather unpacks what we can do, biblically, to explore that desire we have to be thinner or a longing we have for any sort of body change. Heather has three main points for today: It's Okay to Feel This way, Exploring What You Really Long For, and Aligning Our Desires with God's Desires. Here are some of the questions Heather poses in today's episode for you to reflect on: Do I really want a thin body – or is it that I want more control in a life that feels uncontrollable? Do I want some sort of insurance policy that I'll never have to face a sickness that makes me uncomfortable or dehabilitates me? Do I want acceptance and trust and admiration from people? (Am I struggling with people pleasing?) What is it I desire the most? If it's not more of God, more of his kingdom, to be more like Jesus – then I have to step back and ask myself what I'm believing: Am I believing that this life is the end game -that this is the Parade and not the warm up? Am I believing that these things I'm focused on here are ultimate things -things that will last until heaven or things that give me crowns in heaven? Am I believing that I will be more righteous or loved by God if I change the way my body looks? Here are some other things mentioned in today's show: Podcast episode on body grief and grieving ideal body size: https://www.comparedtowho.me/what-to-do-when-youre-depressed-about-body-size-grieving-your-ideal-body/ Podcast episode on "I Just Want to Feel Better About My Body": https://www.comparedtowho.me/i-just-want-to-feel-okay-about-my-body/

A series of her paintings featuring inspiring athletes was featured on NBC during the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and in Runner's World. Currently an Assistant Professor of English at West Chester University, Alnes earned her MFA from Portland State University and her PhD from Oklahoma State University.Alnes's first book, The Fruit Cure: The Story of Extreme Wellness Turned Sour details how mysterious neurological symptoms derailed her career as a Division I runner and left her desperate for answers. She found hope in an unlikely place: a thriving, online community of fruit-eaters. In The Fruit Cure, Jacqueline Alnes takes readers on a spellbinding and unforgettable journey through the world of fruitarianism, interweaving her own powerful narrative with the popularity and problematic history of fruit-based, raw food lifestyles. About The Fruit Cure“A deeply compelling read … Spellbinding ….” – BookPage“Her journey from desperation to self-acceptance is moving and well rendered. In the crowded medical memoir field, this stands out.” — Publishers WeeklyA powerful critique of the failures in our healthcare system and an inquiry into the sinister strains of wellness culture that prey on people's vulnerabilities through schemes, scams, and diets.Jacqueline Alnes was a Division One runner during her freshman year of college, but her season was cut short by a series of inexplicable neurological symptoms. What started with a cough, escalated to Alnes collapsing on the track and experiencing months of unremembered episodes that stole her ability to walk and speak. Two years after quitting the team to heal, Alnes's symptoms returned with a severity that left her using a wheelchair for a period of months. She was admitted to an epilepsy center but doctors could not figure out the root cause of her symptoms. Desperate for answers, she turned to an online community centered around a strict, all-fruit diet which its adherents claimed could cure conditions like depression, eating disorders, addiction, anxiety, and vision problems. Alnes wasn't alone. From all over the world, people in pain, doubted or dismissed by medical authorities, or seeking a miracle diet that would relieve them of white, Western expectations placed on their figures, turned to fruit in hopes of releasing themselves from the perceived failings of their bodies. In The Fruit Cure, Jacqueline Alnes takes readers on a spellbinding and unforgettable journey through the world of fruitarianism, interweaving her own powerful narrative with the popularity and problematic history of fruit-based, raw food lifestyles. For readers plagued by mysterious symptoms, inundated by messages from media about how to attain “the perfect body,” or caught in the grips of a fast-paced culture of capitalism, The Fruit Cure offers a powerful critique of the failures of our healthcare system and an inquiry into the sinister strains of wellness culture that prey on people's vulnerabilities through schemes, scams, and diets masquerading as hope.About The PulseOn The Pulse, host Joeita Gupta brings us closer to issues impacting the disability community across Canada.Joeita Gupta has nurtured a life-long dream to work in radio! In our society, it is so normalized to do anything in our power to strive for a thinner body because it is believed that our thinnest self is our best self (which isn't true). This believe usually leads us taking disordered action in the name of "health" ... but these disordered eating & exercise habits are actually unhealthy (and put us more at risk for developing an eating disorder). And this striving for thinness and making that our main goal is taking us further from the Lord because we are chasing after a number on the scale more than we are chasing Him. We end up putting greater importance in how we look over our relationship with God. Listen to this week's episode to hear more about how striving for thinness is a modern day idol! Today's episode is a conversation I think is so important to hear because it features Sarah Donner, a brilliant woman who started as a fashion model and is now a hypnotherapist and health coach. She started modelling when she was just 14 years old and while going through teenage body changes, had her whole self-worth focused on a career about her body and what size she was. It was when Sarah transitioned into start-up companies and the tech world that she learned there was so much more to her than her body. Sarah's story and the work she does now are just so inspiring and really drive home the fact that we all think if we were thinner, with model bodies, we'd have more confidence or opportunities. But I think Sarah's story kind of disproves that idea.Sarah speaks frankly about the dark cycle of tying our self-worth to our body size and looks. She explains the struggle to find an identity outside of her looks and the intense imposter syndrome she experienced, and still does, in other careers. We can all identify with that, really, or certainly I can. One of the exciting things about Sarah's journey is her work in hypnotherapy now. Hypnotherapy is not the same thing as hypnosis acts in Vegas or on TV, the two get confused, but it is a tool used to bypass the conscious critical mind which makes us more receptive to new ideas and realizations. Hypnotherapy can be a very useful tool in finding what lies at the root of self-worth or food issues. Like myself, Sarah focuses a lot on coaching toward intuitive eating. Hypnotherapy can help get to the truth of our struggle so that we are free to pursue intuitive eating because unless we can connect with our bodies, we can't hear the signals intuitive eating requires. This conversation with Sarah is so important and I'm really glad you're here listening to it now.About Sarah Donner:Founder of Siva Wellness, Sarah grew up in Germany and started her career in fashion, which allowed me to travel the world at a young age. After finishing her degree in New York City, Sarah pivoted into the start-up world and lived between New York and Europe. She had the privilege to work in some terrific tech startups and is the founding member of an AI-backed beauty company called 2250. Sarah is grateful for her past work experiences but needless to say, living that fast-paced life without the right tools in place left its mark on her and she ended up feeling mentally and physically depleted. She suffered from imposter syndrome and anxiety and was constantly battling all sorts of ailments that traditional medicine could not help her with. That is why she started to look for alternative methods to heal herself, and the journey and results have been remarkable. After receiving her license as a Holistic Health Coach from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in New York and her Hypnotherapy License from the Center of Integrative Hypnosis, she studied Transpersonal Hypnotherapy with Allison Axinn in Tuscany, Italy. Sarah decided to turn her passion into her career and Siva was born. Siva is for everyone that is ready to implement change with a long lasting effect and without any of the side effects.__Learn more about Sarah Donner:Website: siva-wellness.comInstagramLearn more about Dr. Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comFollow me on Facebook and Instagram

On this week's episode of "The Diet Obsessed Podcast - Craving More" I discuss how I am investing in myself, how my mental health is doing this week and of course, my tasty treats of the week, which involves delicious crab cakes and an extremely disappointing sandwich I ate over the weekend. I then briefly discuss a "Diet Culture Media Moment" from a snippet out of the new Kardashian's episode. Finally, I do another review of the podcast "Maintenance Phase" because the topic caught my eye, especially after reviewing the Economics of Thinness. This show was entitled "How to Take 20lbs of Your Man" and with the gender roles reversed on the weight issue, I just couldn't resist doing a deep dive into this episode and sharing my strong opinions as always! On this episode of "The Diet Obsessed Podcast - Craving More" I discuss my "Tasty Treats of the Week" which this week, is the food I will be making for my upcoming Memorial Day Weekend Pool Party, including Mexican Street Corn Salad and homemade guacamole. I also discuss my current mental health challenges, due to choosing terrible business partners. I then talk about a "Diet Culture Media Moment" on a vapid show called "Dubai Bling" where the wife of a wealthy Indian business man, embarrasses and berates him for eating carbs. Finally I review "The Economics of Thinness" which was an article written in "The Economist" and was discussed on the Money Talks Podcast and also DST (as I reviewed in my last Craving More show.) This is Part 2 of the controversial topic: "Do women make less money if they gain weight" and TRIGGER WARNING there are a lot of polarizing discussions throughout this show, so if you get upset by discussions on women's weight, the BMI scale and patriarchial ideas that still persist in today's society, you should skip this episode.However...If these topics interest you, please follow and subscribe to "The Diet Obsessed Podcast" and Craving More:Subscription page:https://www.buzzsprout.com/1876556/subscribe and don't forget to leave a rating + review! Finally, follow me on Instagram @thedietobsessedpodcast and @veronica.santarelli Hosted on Acast. On this week's episode of "The Diet Obsessed Podcast - Craving More" I discuss a new restaurant I tried recently with my girlfriends, some of it was good, some of it was not so good and I describe all the details in my intro. Then I launch into a review of "Diet Starts Tomorrow" and to listen to this one, I had to subscribe to their premium content, which I happily did, because I was VERY interested in the topic of "Is my weight holding back my career" which was based on an article written in The Economist, called "The Economy of Thinness." In this show which is "Part 1" of the discussion, I review the opinions expressed by Betches founders Sami & Aleen in this DST episode, along with my own. In this episode, I get candid about my journey with eros, sex, feeling sexual shut-down and closed, motherhood, and the major shifts that took place after I had a baby. I lay out some of the energetic patterns that played out for me and kept me locked out of body and sexual expression. I talk about how motherhood set fire to these old patterns and allowed me to not just birth a baby, but a new version of myself. I talk about the energetic pattern of Feminine starvation vs. Feminine nourishment and I also talk about the damsel patterns that kept me looking outside of myself for answers. :::Show notes::: 2:48 - On vulnerability 3:30 - An invitation to my audience 5:10 - Quick fixes vs. rewiring deep patterns 7:55 - My story. Thinness equals health. There are generations of doctors that have been trained to believe this, and we have been indoctrinated by this concept for so long that it's hard to believe anything else. One of the biggest contributing factors to this is the widespread adoption of the Body Mass Index (BMI) as a measure of health by the medical system. So where exactly does the BMI originate from and should we still be using it as a tool to assess someone's health? To help me answer these important questions, I invited primary care Internist Dr. Kara Pepper to explain why the BMI is fraught with misinterpretation, and what we should be looking at instead. We also explore how patients who struggle with eating disorders can be better supported in a clinical setting. If you are someone that is struggling with an eating disorder, please reach out to your medical team for help, or contact the National Eating Disorder Help Line for further advice.Connect with Dr. Pepper:It's Not Just You podcastWebsiteInstagramTwitterResources:Health at Every SizeNational Eating Disorder Help LineFind an eating disorder professionalBooks:Fearing the Black Body - the Racial Origins of Fat PhobiaFat Talk - Parenting in the Age of Diet CultureIt's Always Been Ours - Rewriting the story of Black Women's BodiesAudio Stamps02:36 - Dr. Kara Pepper tells us more about who she is and who she helps.04:12 - We find out where Body Mass Index (BMI) comes from, how it has evolved over time with the drug industry, and where we're at currently.10:21 - Dr. Rentea asks what Dr. Pepper would advise us to look at when it comes to our health, if BMI is not the main thing to focus on. 12:26 - We learn how both clinicians and patients can do a better job in making sure that they're getting screened appropriately for eating disorders.15:20 - Dr. Rentea reminds us of the importance of rethinking our normal and finding the right people to help us on our journey (see links above for specific resources).Quotes08:30 - “There are two generations of doctors at this point that are trained that thinness equals health.” -Kara Pepper MD08:40 - “That's the take home: BMI is not a great metric for what we're looking at.” -Kara Pepper MD11:01 - “Prioritizing the patient and their unique values is the primary goal of care.” -Kara Pepper All of the information on this podcast is for general informational purposes only. The pursuit of thinness at any cost has to stop. In this day and age most of us can see right through irresponsible comments like “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels”, but how many of us can identify diet culture disguised as health? Do you know the line between health promoting behaviors and obsessive patterns? How do you get yourself out of food habits that began with good intentions but have now spiraled into compulsion? In today's episode I'm joined by clinical social worker June Burke-MacDonald, a social worker who specializes in eating disorder recovery, to unpack all things disordered eating, both socially and clinically. We discuss the causes of eating disorders, how to navigate nutrition without dogma, misconceptions about eating disorders, and the insidious nature of calorie tracking. You don't want to miss this one: if not you, then a friend, or a friend of a friend has been touched by the effects of diet culture and eating disorders disguised as health. Thanks for listening! Andy and Brendan quickly run through a great, full day of the PGA Championship at Oak Hill. They begin with some thoughts on the absolutely wonderful course conditions, which had balls bouncing and bounding all over for a mid May date. There are some thoughts on Higa's big moment and Bryson's return to the stage of competitive golf after a long, hard five-year journey. There are many other notes and comments including some shots of the day, quotes of the day, worst outfits, and reviews of Rory and his low Whoop score, Spieth, DJ, Brooksy, Scheffler's pace of play, and Jason Day's practice-free week. On this week's episode of "The Diet Obsessed Podcast" I talk about the yummy new asian dish I tried, along with a rare indulgence at Starbucks. Then I was planning on reviewing "The Economic of Thinness" as a Part 2 to last week's episode, however I decided to release it to the people who subscribe to "Craving More" due to the amount of triggering topics and quite frankly, shocking evidence that was detailed throughout the show. My jaw literally dropped several times throughout, so if you want to listen, please subscribe to "Craving More."The podcast I decided to review, was from fitness influencer, Christine Bullock, who I used to work with at Equinox South Bay, back in the day! Christine is a fitness and wellness guru, who did an interesting topic on EMS training, similar to what was shown on a past episode of The Kardashians.I also touch briefly on Brandi Glanville's podcast, "Unfiltered", along with "Heal Squad" from Maria Menounos, which I will also be reviewing in more detail very soon!Support the showIf these topics interest you, please follow and subscribe to "The Diet Obsessed Podcast" and Craving More:Subscription page:https://www.buzzsprout.com/1876556/subscribe and don't forget to leave a rating + review! Finally, follow me on Instagram @thedietobsessedpodcast and @veronica.santarelli

On Monday, in a shocking development, Fox News ousted Tucker Carlson. It remains unclear exactly why he was let go but his departure leaves a gaping hole in the network's prime time line up. Fox News appears confident that the network will be able to replace Carlson."Fat Talk" author and journalist Virginia Sole-Smith asserted that the "thin ideal" is a byproduct of White supremacy and the patriarchy while appearing on NPR's "Fresh Air" podcast. Jen Ponton is an actor, writer, and creator who seeks to make others laugh while also remaining true to her values as a queer fat activist. You may have seen her work on AMC's Dietland, The Unbreakable Jimmy Schmidt, Orange is the New Black, Love on the Run, or her new highly anticipated recurring role on Three Women opposite Shailene Woodley and Betty Gilpin. Is thin... back in?If you're a frequent user of social media, particularly Instagram and TikTok, you may have been led to think so. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Mindy Kaling have recently debuted much slimmer physiques, and some speculate it's due to the help of a diabetes drug--Ozempic.But how does our collective healing from these unattainable body norms interact with the ever-changing body image landscape? How does “thin is back in” affect women and femmes today? We can't talk about body image without talking about the history of the ideal body, intersectionality and the media. And that's where University of Denver professors Erin Harrop and Rachael Liberman come in.
It's here! Our next series, “For the Love of the Middle” kicks off this week. Many of us are at that middle stage of life, and if we aren't, we're going to get there eventually. This series brings life, hope and humor to a period of life which can at times be surprising, confusing, but ultimately, steeped in the wisdom of years lived and the harder work of our 20's and 30's behind us. We're ringing in the start of this series with an amazing first guest; Mary Pipher, a clinical psychologist, anthropologist, and author. In her full scope of work, Mary has pioneered important conversations around motherhood and raising girls. Mary was the first to bring the effects of culture on mental health to the mainstream, especially for women and girls. She has a deep understanding of how culture can shape our thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Her most recent work has focused on aging intentionally, peppered with her own experience and her work has inspired many people to rethink the way we approach mental health and aging within our society. Join Mary and Jen as they discuss: - Pipher's background in psychology and how she became engaged in the cultural conversations about girlhood. - The importance of cultivating personal resilience and adaptability in aging. - How society impacts the mental health of girls and women at different stages of life. - The cultural scripts that influence girls' body image and sexuality, and how they differ from reality. - The role of caregivers and the challenges they face in taking care of aging family members. Mary Pipher's work is groundbreaking in exploring the connections between culture, mental health, and their impacts on aging. Her insights are instrumental in shaping the way we approach mental health issues and caregiving, and her activism and writing continue to help women all over the world. Thank you to our sponsors! Thought-Provoking Quotes! “One of the things I really love about my life as a 75 year old is I'm very busy, but I can wake up every morning and decide what I want to be busy at. And what a gift that is.” - Mary Pipher “Every life stage has its joys and its challenges as you know. We know that there's a lot of research that women get happier as they age. They're the happiest demographic in the world.” - Mary Pipher “if you don't become better, you become bitter. Right? You either grow or you shrink. You don't get to stay the same without growing. We all age, but we don't all grow. And the secret of being happy is growing.” -Mary Pipher “I very much believe we all find what we're looking for. And if what we're looking for is joy and love and kindness and beauty and laughter, that's what we find.” -Mary Pipher “So one of the goals of this life state is learning to detach and let go--acceptance of the fact that my world will not be as popular as before. And that means that the light I find is not in other people's eyes, it's gotta be in my own heart.” -Mary Pipher Guest's Links! This is the first installment in Eric Ludy's winter Daily Thunder series, 1940, which follows the epic storyline of Hitler's rise to power in Europe in the the '30's and Great Britain's unexpected stand to thwart his progress. In this inaugural episode of the series, Eric goes right to the heart of this series and takes us into the seeming impossible gutter that Great Britain had fallen into by the year 1939. They were pathetic, degenerate, and despicably selfish. But something happened in 1940 that awakened them, as a nation, from their self-stupor and caused them to rise up and become what many people consider the greatest generation ever.

Across the rich world there is a negative relationship between incomes and weight, as measured by body mass index. The richer people are, the thinner they tend to be. But separate the data by gender and a startling gap appears. Rich women are much thinner than poorer ones; but rich men and poor men are just as likely to be overweight or obese. On this week's podcast, hosts Alice Fulwood and Thomas Lee-Devlin examine why it may be rational, in economic terms, for ambitious women to pursue thinness. John Cawley of Cornell University explains his research that suggests overweight women have lower salaries than their thinner peers. We examine the legacy of Helen Gurley Brown, the outspoken former editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine, who championed dieting to get ahead. And Jennifer Shinall, a law professor at Vanderbilt University, considers potential solutions to weight-based discrimination.Sign up for our new weekly newsletter dissecting the big themes in markets, business and the economy at www.economist.com/moneytalks For full access to print, digital and audio editions, subscribe to The Economist at www.economist.com/podcastoffer Hosted on Acast. Contrary to what we have been brainwashed to believe for decades, "thinness" does not equate to health or fitness. You can be thin and unhealthy. You can be larger-bodied and healthy. And your worth has nothing to do with your weight. Can we step back and acknowledge the fact that we have reserved self-love and happiness for those who are an "acceptable " size? It's outrageous. And we are teaching the next generation that in order to be valuable, you cannot take up too much space. Let's break down this narrative, and change the conversation. Can't wait to hear what you think! Also, don't forget about THE HOMECOMING PROGRAM launching in the New Year!
