The Nelson Mandela Foundation has said the late statesman's identity book, set to be auctioned along with almost 100 of Madiba's personal items, should be protected by heritage authorities. Auction house Guernsey's has advertised the sale for Monday, 22 February, after a court ruling cleared the way for the items to be sold. Nearly 100 items linked to Mandela are set to be auctioned, including his identity book, shoes, shirts, glasses, and even his hearing aids. The Nelson Mandela Foundation's acting chief executive, Professor Verne Harris, said that Madiba "had no in-principle objection" to his belongings being auctioned off for fundraising initiatives. "He himself donated items for this purpose many times. The foundation still has in its custody a few artefacts given to it by Madiba specifically for this kind of fundraising," he said. Harris said that one of the issues that needed to be considered in the "analysis of a fundraising auction related to Madiba", was the heritage value of the items. "Do any of the items possess an overarching South African heritage value which would place them under the protections afforded by heritage legislation? "In terms of the auction and the items currently under discussion, we have not had access to the artefacts themselves nor to the kind of detailed contextual evidence required to support clear-cut answers to these questions," he added. However, Harris said that the foundation believed that Mandela's ID book had heritage value. "One artefact that we did have access to through Madiba in the past and for which we have significant contextual information is Madiba's 1993 identity document. We believe it to be self-evident that this item requires the protections afforded by South Africa's heritage legislation," he said. News24 previously reported that the SA Heritage Resources Agency (Sahra) had sought an interdict to prevent Mandela's eldest daughter, Makaziwe Mandela, selling the former president's personal belongings. However, the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria dismissed Sahra's application. News24 was unable to reach Makaziwe at the time of publication. Listed price for ID book is R1.4m Sahra spokesperson Yazeed Sadien said some of the items on auction were still "the subject of the ongoing legal proceedings" and that the agency would continue to challenge the auction. A date for the continuing legal proceedings has yet to be set. Guernsey's director Susan Jaffe would not be drawn on the pending legal action. Instead, she said that it was "premature" to have an interview with News24 or address News24's questions. Sadien added that in 2022, a similar auction was suspended at the request of Sahra, due to the ongoing legal proceedings. The auction catalogue describes one of the items as Mandela's "personal and only legitimate identification book in post-apartheid South Africa", which was issued in February 1993, about three years after his release from prison. He received a smart ID card in 2013, months before his death. The listed price for the ID book is $75 000 (R1.4-million), according to the catalogue. The sale of the items will reportedly fund the creation of the Mandela Memorial Garden around Madiba's grave in Qunu, Eastern Cape. News24 previously reported that Mandela's grandson, Ndaba Mandela, had slammed his aunt's plans to auction off the former president's personal possessions. Ndaba said the auction would rob both his family and the South African nation of important heritage items. Ndaba had not responded further at the time of publication.

Joni Rodgers is known to readers and publishers as a novelist, ghostwriter and essayist with an eye for detail, an ear for language and a heart to match her subjects. She's collaborated on best-selling books with Don Lemon (This is the Fire), Kristin Chenoweth (A Little Bit Wicked), Swoosie Kurtz (Part Swan, Part Goose), Elizabeth Smart (Where There's Hope), Justin Bieber (First Step 2 Forever), Rue McClanahan (My First Five Husbands…and the Ones Who Got Away), and Ndaba Mandela, the grandson of Nelson Mandela (Going to the Mountain), among others. In January, 2022, she plans to reissue six books of her own, including the critically-acclaimed novels Crazy for Trying and Sugarland and the deeply personal (and, deeply funny) memoir about surviving cancer as a young mom, following a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at the age of 32—the best-selling Bald in the Land of Big Hair. Joni's always known how to hold an audience: she grew up on stage, performing in a family bluegrass band called The Dakota Ramblers, and after studying theater in college she thought she'd make her way in the world as a performer—acting, playing music, and doing voice-over work. The cancer changed that—and so, she started writing. “Ghostwriting combines the craft skills I've gained as a writer with the collaborative spirit of my theater roots,” she writes on her website. “I use my Stanislavski training to capture the unique voice of my clients, structure compelling stories, and focus powerful messaging.” Together with her husband, the multi-media artist Gary Rodgers, she runs the Westport Lighthouse Writers Retreat, on the Pacific Coast, adjacent to Washington's Westport Light State Park.

CliffCentral.com — What's it like to test positive for Covid-19, and what is the mental side of being diagnosed with such a virus? With a surname like Mandela, there is an honour and lineage of greatness to carry. Ndaba Mandela and his team have started The Mandela Institute for Humanity. The values and principles of his grandfather are transferable in his mind, and they have grounded him in everything he is emploring us all to take up as Africans. How should we deal with 21 days of lockdown? What lessons can we as humanity learn from this pandemic? Apparently green fingers, and something else which is green, are the way forward.
MultimediaLIVE — Ndaba Mandela was at home in Johannesburg with friends on Saturday when he received a call which shook him to the core: he had tested positive for Covid-19. Mandela, the grandson of former president Nelson Mandela, arrived back in SA from New York the Sunday before, the same night President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation and declared a state of emergency over the coronavirus and Covid-19, the respiratory illness it causes. The following day, Mandela went to be tested because he had returned from the United States, which is officially listed as a high risk country.
Ndaba Mandela is Nelson Mandela’s Grandson. He is passionate about the Mandela legacy and motivating young people to get involved in community development. He is passionate about Africa, its people and is concerned about its future. Although the continent faces many problems, there are many positive things that the global community does not know about Africa and Mandela wants to capture these and share them with the world.
Caroline Pugh, Founder of Oya Partners, a firm she started to help young global leaders and philanthropists create change in the world. One of the leaders Caroline works with is Ndaba Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela. In working with Ndaba she helped him to start his US foundation, the Mandela Institute for Humanity, carrying the life lessons and values of Nelson Mandela forward. In this episode, Caroline shares what Ndaba taught her about Nelson Mandela: that people remember the former South African leader for his forgiving nature, but that he also held his values in high regard, imbuing them into the fabric of his life. The main pillars of his values entailed treating others with love, dignity, and respect. As the episode continues, Caroline shares her passion for moving all human beings forward on a global scale, much of which has been influenced by her work with Ndaba and others over the past few years. In the late 1960's and early 1970's, the divisions in the United States over the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement brought the youth of America in conflict with longstanding social and political norms. The Richard Nixon administration sought to ingratiate itself to both the youth culture and the Deep South by trying to recruit the favor of music star Johnny Cash. Cash, nicknamed “The Man In Black”, was invited to perform at the Nixon White House. Nixon wanted him to play stereotypical country favorites that he didn’t even write. But Cash's social consciousness was being lit by anti-establishment rock music performers like Bob Dylan and Neil Young. CVF was inspired by the life of Kathy’s son, Dan Eldon – artist, adventurer and activist – killed in 1993 while on assignment for Reuters New Agency in Somalia. Since 2004, CVF has acted as an incubator, academy and agency for more than 200 projects and productions by artists, filmmakers, playwrights, and leaders of social movements on five continents who use media and the arts as vehicles of social change, impacting over 100 million people. Kathy is also the Founder of Creative Visions Productions, which has produced award-winning films including “Dying to Tell the Story,” a TBS special about front line correspondents hosted by Amy; “Soldiers of Peace, a Children’s Crusade,” a CNN film profiling the Children’s Peace Movement in Colombia, and “Global Tribe,” a cutting edge PBS series hosted by Amy featuring grass-roots creative activists. Once “Global Tribe,” an interactive website, inspired the development of Rock Your World, a common core curriculum that engaged middle and high school students in local and global issues. Together with Julia Roberts, she exec-produced “Extraordinary Moms,” a special for the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) about the power of mothers to transform the world that featured then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Rosie O’Donnell and Christiane Amanpour. Currently she is developing “Best Care Possible,” a PBS special in association with WETA, about Palliative Care in America. After many years of development, “Journey,” a feature film about Dan, directed by Bronwen Hughes (“Harriet the Spy,” “Forces of Nature,” “Stander”) will go into production in 2015. Kathy is the co-founder of Sanctri, a Facebook application that enables individuals to not only remember those who have passed on, but also to celebrate their lives through creating enduring memorials and tributes. Kathy is the author of 18 books, including “Angel Catcher,” “Soul Catcher,” and “Love Catcher” (Chronicle), a series of popular self-guided journals written with her daughter Amy Eldon Turteltaub that help people negotiate loss and grief, find their purpose and introduce more love into their lives. Kathy edited the acclaimed collection of Dan’s journals, “Journey is the Destination: The Journals of Dan Eldon” (Chronicle), and has also written a variety of popular cookbooks, eating out guides and children’s social history books.
