Actress Olivia Colman is the patron of the arts charity Tender, having previously played a survivor of domestic violence in the film Tyrannosaur. She speaks to Woman's Hour alongside Tender CEO Susie McDonald about the work they're doing to try and prevent domestic violence. A special police unit used to spy on left wing political and activist groups was not justified and should have been disbanded in its early days. That's one of the conclusions of the first part of a judge led inquiry into undercover policing, which covers the years 1968 to 1982. Sir John Mitting, Chair of the inquiry said most groups infiltrated by the Met's Special Demonstration Squad posed no threat. His report details tactics such as forming sexual relationships while undercover and using dead children's names to create false identities. Hayley Hassall is joined by ‘Alison' who had a five year relationship with an undercover officer, and by Harriet Wistrich, who is Director of the Centre for Women's Justice and part of the legal team that represented women in the inquiry. The writer, editor and disability activist Lottie Jackson has written a memoir called See Me Rolling. In it, she discusses the way that society views disability and the innate prejudices that we have. She also talks about fashion and how important it is in letting her express her identity. She joins Hayley. The journalist Afua Hirsch has made a new series of Africa Rising for BBC 2, about an African cultural renaissance. Afua visits three very different countries; Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa, and interviews young creatives who are expressing new ideas which are gathering momentum across the continent. Afua joins Hayley to talk about the female artists she met and their inspiring visions.

As her new series for the BBC, Africa Rising, takes Afua Hirsch to Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa, we talk to her about the artists and art scenes she encountered and what she took away from her experiences. The Liverpool Biennial's latest edition opened last weekend and has a South African curator, Khanyisile Mbongwa, and an IsiZulu title, uMoya: The Sacred Return of Lost Things. The Art Newspaper's contemporary art correspondent, Louisa Buck, visited the biennial and reviews it for us. And it is Art Basel this week, in its original Swiss location, so this episode's Work of the Week is one of the most notable works for sale at the fair. Valentine was painted by Jean-Michel Basquiat in 1984 and given to his then girlfriend, Paige Powell, on Valentine's Day. Jeffrey Deitch, who is selling the work at Art Basel, tells us its story.Africa Rising: Morocco is on the BBC iPlayer now. In 1999, South African anti-apartheid activist and revolutionary leader Nelson Mandela visited Gaza and said, "We know too well our freedom is not complete without the freedom of the Palestinians."Since his death in 2013, Mandela's unifying message of decolonization reverberated across the globe. The anti-colonial, anti-apartheid struggle that he led to end racial segregation and transform South Africa into a democratic nation has been lauded by Palestinians, who have drawn parallels between Israeli occupation and apartheid to the situation that Black South Africans faced.Joining Mnar Adley for this week's MintCast interview to discuss the struggle against Apartheid and the continued struggle against colonialism is Nkosi "Mandla" Mandela, who, since 2009, has been a member of the South African parliament for the African National Congress Party. He is also the grandson of Nelson Mandela. On Wednesday, South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor called on the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants for Israeli leaders responsible for Operation Shield and Arrow, last weekend's series of airstrikes against the Gaza Strip.Over 20 Palestinians have been killed so far since Israel began bombing the world's largest open air prison. Entire families were killed in their sleep, including children, and several neighborhoods flattened to rubble, leaving many communities homeless. As the world witnesses yet another massacre committed by the apartheid state, South Africa and other African nations are rising in the fight against Israel's occupation of Palestine.Earlier this year, the African Union asked its member states to cut scientific, cultural and even some economic ties with Israel until it reverses its colonial practices against Palestine.Nkosi Mandela has been one of the world's most outspoken voices against Israeli apartheid and in support of Palestinian liberation. Beyond simplistic binaries of the dark continent or Africa Rising, Africans at home and abroad articulate their identities through their quotidian practices and cultural politics. Amongst the privileged classes, these articulations can be characterized as Afropolitan projects--cultural, political, and aesthetic expressions of global belonging rooted in African ideals. Afropolitan Projects: Redefining Blackness, Sexualities, and Culture from Houston to Accra (UNC Press, 2021) examines the Afropolitan projects of Ghanaians living in two cosmopolitan cities: Houston, Texas, and Accra, Ghana. Anima Adjepong's focus shifts between the cities, exploring contests around national and pan-African cultural politics, race, class, sexuality, and religion. Focusing particularly on queer sexuality, Adjepong offers unique insight into the contemporary sexual politics of the Afropolitan class. The book expands and complicates existing research by providing an in-depth transnational case study that not only addresses questions of cosmopolitanism, class, and racial identity but also considers how gender and sexuality inform the racialized identities of Africans in the United States and in Ghana. Bringing an understudied cohort of class-privileged Africans to the forefront, Adjepong offers a more fully realized understanding of the diversity of African lives. Learn more about your ad choices. As the COVID-19 daily confirmed cases and death rates decrease in some African countries, the need for strategically re-opening economies and developing sustainable recovery plans has become increasingly imminent. The pandemic offers an opportunity to build forward better. To understand what building forward better means in practice, our correspondent Hafsa Anouar is joined by Professor Kevin Chika Urama, Senior Director of the African Development Institute at the African Development Bank. Professor Urama draws a picture of the opportunities that have emerged across the African continent amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and provides recommendations for policymakers in designing resilient and sustainable economic, fiscal, and social policies. To get the private sector perspective on building forward, our host Sruthi Palaniappan engages in a discussion with Tonye Cole, the co-founder and former Group Executive Director of the Sahara Group, an energy conglomerate with operations across Africa. The executive producer of this season of OPP is Lian Ryan-Hume. This episode was researched and produced by Hafsa Anouar and Sruthi Palaniappan, and edited by Allisha Azlan.

Ep.1018: ‘Africa Rising'? ‘Africa Reeling' May Be More Fitting Now For decades Africa was eager for a new narrative, and in recent years it got a snappy one. The Economist published a cover story titled “Africa Rising.” A Texas business school professor published a book called “Africa Rising.” And in 2011, The Wall Street Journal ran a series of articles about economic growth on the continent, and guess what that series was called? “Africa Rising.” The rise seemed obvious: You could simply stroll around Nairobi, Kenya's capital, or many other African capitals, and behold new shopping malls, new hotels, new solar-powered streetlights, sometimes even new Domino's pizzerias, all buoyed by what appeared to be high economic growth rates sweeping the continent. For so long Africa had been associated with despair and doom, and now the quality of life for many Africans was improving. Hundreds of thousands of Rwandans were getting clean water for the first time. In Kenya, enrollment in public universities more than doubled from 2007 to 2012. In many countries, life expectancy was increasing, infant mortality decreasing. But in recent months, as turmoil has spread across the continent, and the red-hot economic growth has cooled, this optimistic narrative has taken a hit. Some analysts are now questioning how profound the growth actually was. “Nothing has changed on the governance front, nothing has changed structurally,” said Grieve Chelwa, a Zambian economist who is a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard. “Africa rising was really good for some crackpot dictators,” he added. “But in some ways, it was a myth.” No place exposes the cracks in the “Africa rising” narrative better than Ethiopia, which had been one of the fastest risers. Ethiopia is now in flames. Hundreds have been killed during protests that have convulsed the country. It seems the continent as a whole is heading into a tough period. Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, faces its gravest economic crisis in years because of low oil prices. At the same time, it is trying to fight off Boko Haram, one of the most bloodthirsty insurgent groups on the planet. South Africa, the continent's most developed nation, has been wracked by waves of unrest. Troops with assault rifles stomp around college campuses, trying to quell student protests. The country's currency, the rand, hovers near a record low. South Sudan, which topped The Economist's list in 2013 of the world's fastest-growing economies, is now a killing field, the site of one of Africa's worst civil wars.

In this episode we discussed the role of Africa's youth in impacting its future. With around 60% of Africa's population being under the age of 25, the youth undoubtedly play an important role in making decisions that will change the state of the continent. Additionally, the world is undergoing a new technological revolution with the invention of AI and blockchain. This has opened up a new dimension for African development and we examine how the African youth can take steps to ensure that we are not left behind.

This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! However, at this writing that is an idea without flesh.
“African economies are staring at an abyss,” said Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed earlier this week in a desperate appeal to the international community for aid and debt relief to offset the ruinous effects of the COVID-19 outbreak. The economic crisis brought on by the COVID-19 is disproportionately impacting African countries where even under normal circumstances often struggle to provide basic services. The emergence of this latest pandemic on the continent comes as African governments were already struggling with the effects of climate change, locusts and a variety of other infectious diseases ranging from Lassa fever to malaria. Although the situation today looks grim, the head of the Africa Futures and Innovations program at the Institute for Security Studies in Pretoria, Jakkie Cilliers, contends that, COVID-19 aside, a number of key global trends are actually lining up in Africa’s favor. In his new book, Africa First!: Igniting a Growth Revolution, Jakkie provides a detailed forecast for the next twenty years on how trends in manufacturing, climate change and technology will shape the continent. It’s important to note, though, that his book is not one of those feel good “Africa Rising” narratives that’s been so popular over the past 5-10 years. Jakkie doesn’t have any simple answers to what will be at times a long, difficult journey for a rapidly growing continent. He joins Eric & Cobus to discuss what he sees ahead for Africa and whether the burgeoning COVID-19 crisis challenges any of the assumptions that underlie his forecast.JOIN THE DISCUSSION:Facebook: www.facebook.com/ChinaAfricaProject Twitter: @eolander | @stadenesque | @JakkieCilliersAmazon Kindle Edition: Africa First!: Igniting a Growth RevolutionSUPPORT THIS PODCAST. Ten years ago, the world was fighting its way out of a global financial crisis, but prospects were strong for Sub-Saharan Africa to quickly recover. The World Bank started publishing Africa's Pulse at that time, as a vehicle to help us track these trends and put the economic and development outlook squarely on the agenda for our discussions with African leaders and our partners. Over the last decade, we have been riding the wave of the “Africa Rising” narrative through the economic ups and downs in the region, including a regional crisis that stopped progress in its tracks in the middle of the decade, from which many countries are still recovering. We published the 20th edition of Africa's Pulse in October, and as we close the decade, host Albert Zeufack, Chief Economist for the Africa Region at the World Bank, invites colleagues Shanta Devarajan, Punam Chuhan-Pole, and Cesar Calderon, who have led this important work over the last ten years.

In This Episode: I will be celebrating Black History Month with a difference. Instead of concentrating on the history of Africans after slavery, I would take you straight to Africa, it’s people and entertainment. I want you to experience the rich culture of our people, as well as some great movies and series that educate you about Africa. As I celebrate my 50th episode, I would love to share the greatness of Africa and her children. We are rising together as a people and the world is paying attention. Music featured is "Africa Rising" by Davido, Diamond, Lola Rae, Mi Casa, Sarkodie & Tiwa Savage. This episode is the third edition of the My Africa series on Hyphenated. I sat down with my sorority sister (shout out to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated) Eden Hagos, widely known as Black Foodie, to talk about being Hyphenated. Eden is an Ethiopian-Canadian, born and raised in the small border town of Windsor, Ontario. In this episode we talk about Ethiopian Airlines, history, colonization, power, war, leadership, religion, culture and patriotism. In this episode, Eden reminds us that Ethiopia is an ancient, Holy land complete with palaces, monasteries, pieces of architectural history that colonization robbed from most of sub-Saharan Africa. We actually conducted the interview in an Ethiopian coffeeshop located in the Junction neighbourhood (St. Clair West and Oakwood) in Toronto. The spot is called Mofer Coffee, check it out!
Music featured is "Africa Rising" by Davido, Diamond, Lola Rae, Mi Casa, Sarkodie & Tiwa Savage. This episode is the second edition of the My Africa series on Hyphenated. In this episode, I interviewed Arthur Nsenga who is representing for the Central Africans. The Democratic Republic of Congo is perhaps best known for the reign of President Mobutu and the civil war they had from 1997 to 2003—a war that lines up with the years in which Arthur remembers leaving the Congo. But I think this interview is important because I know Congo as the home of some of the most friendly people, vibrant music (shout out to Awilo Longomba) and, beautiful cultures. In parts of the episode you can hear from K-Shana, Arthur’s beautiful girlfriend who helped to nudge Arthur through the telling of his story.
Music featured is "Africa Rising" by Davido, Diamond, Lola Rae, Mi Casa, Sarkodie & Tiwa Savage. I have recently been bothered by the majority of Canadians and Americans referring to Africa as one country. So I am recording five interviews with African immigrants to speak about their migration story. This episode features Nicole, an architect who is Zimbabwe-born, South-African raised. Nicole speaks a lot about the differences between the various places she’s lived and visited, and shares her knowledge with us offering a new perspective on development and progress.
New Year’s resolution: this year, we’re going to be more international. To that end, on this week’s podcast, we’re talking about Africa. Nimko Ali is a Somali-born feminist activist and campaigner against female genital mutilation (FGM). She tells me about Somaliland, its history and why it’s definitely not part of Somalia; what life is like in the country’s capital Hargeisa; and her thoughts on Africa’s cultural prospects. Between us, we also come up with some novel ideas for some GPS-enabled goats. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Episode 57: On this episode we get to meet three humans from the cycling world. I had the privilege to chat with Kim, Jock and Bonaventu from Team Africa Rising. Kim forms part of the management team for Africa Rising as the director of marketing and logistics. She has a fire heart. Jock was the first American to take part in the biggest race of the world the Tour de France. You can view his story in the documentary film Rising from Ashes. He’s a living legend sharing his wealth of knowledge, experience, and love of cycling with Team Africa Rising. Bonaventu, is a rockstar young cyclists forming part of Team Africa Rising’s up and coming Pro cyclists. Bona is prepping his mind and body for the up coming Tour of Colorado. Team Africa rising was founded in 2007. They have exponentially grown the sport of cycling in Rwanda, a country torn apart in the 1994 Genocide and still mentally recovering from such an impactful experience. With assistance from the Rwandan government and the Rwandan Cycling Federation, Jock Boyer and Kim Coats have grown the team to the point where it now fields more than 35 cyclists — men and women — in all levels and disciplines. Team rider Adrien Niyonshuti qualified for the 2012 London Olympic Games in mountain biking, and, most recently, Joseph Areruya, who came up through the program, won a stage at the 2017 U23 Giro d'Italia, marking the first stage win by a Rwandan at a UCI race. //// Watch youtube trailer here >>> https://youtu.be/XLwNi53budw //// Find out more about Fueltalk >>> www.fueltalk.co //// Get your custom sports nutrition box >>> www.fuelixir.com //// Follow Pablo Quiroga on instagram >>> @pabloiquiroga //// Music courtesy of Huskinopolis >>> @huskinopolis

Jon Moore reporting! This weeks focus is Small Holders! I saw a graphic on facebook the other day showing the production from industrial farms Versus smallholders. 30% of the world's food production coming from the industrial sector and 70% from smallholders. This is a sector in need of support. Starvation or rather the threat of starvation tends drive systems to stability. If we change something we might well starve next winter. This is quite understandable yet something over which we have no control is changing, The Climate. Watching an edition of Landline on the ABC last month I heard a farmer here in Australia telling the interviewer he was certain the climate was changing. His evidence? Silage making used to start in the first week of November, late Spring. Now He starts in the last week of August, two and a half months earlier. Even Alice Springs, in the dead centre of the Australian Continent is now regularly receiving rain during winter. So when the people on the ground can see the changes we need to take heed. Smallhalodings are more resilient as a rule. They have greater tree cover, deeper soils full or organic matter and are by their nature not monocultural. A variety of crops and livestock are kept. This means some form of production will always occur barring a ten year drought. And these are happening too. The blog Africa RISING brings us three posts: Addressing smallholder farmers’ needs with green manure cover crops and agroforestry in Zambia, Conservation agriculture – a system to adapt to climate variability and declining soil fertility in Zambia & Improved manure management – getting more from a limited resource. The danger for smallholders is the enticement of the petrochemical industry and the call of “The West”. Perhaps fortunately inorganic fertilisers are 3 to 5 times the price they are in Europe. Growing as if these fertilisers had been applied but not doing so depletes the soil and leads inevitably to the collapse of the system. A poverty trap of enormous proportions. Africa RISING provides a solution. An example from Zambia: Quote: In Eastern Province of Zambia, farmers are being offered a range of solutions by Africa RISING that provide a way out of this poverty trap. These technologies, options, and approaches include drought- and stress-tolerant maize germplasm, conservation agriculture (CA), improved rotation and intercropping with grain legumes, agroforestry, and green manure cover crops. End Quote. In effect, apart from the seed selection options, a return to the traditional smallholder’s way of farming. That being said, pretty much the entire globe is now trapped in a money system of some sort. The need for income has also driven many mixed livestock/cropping smallholders to feed off crop residues rather than leave them on the soil surface to protect that precious resource. Quote: The use of CA (CA = Conservation Agriculture) principles (minimum soil disturbance, crop residue retention, and diversification through rotation and intercropping) hinges on the ability of farmers to retain sufficient surface crop residues to protect the soil from erosion, runoff, evaporation, and excessive temperatures. However, farmers in mixed crop-livestock systems face competing demands for these residues because they also feed them to their animals. Green manure and selected agroforestry species are therefore grown to improve the soil, generate biomass for ground cover, and provide fodder; some also produce high protein grain for food, feed, or for sale on the market. End Quote This is the way I’d like to see more of the world’s agronomic resources put to use. It overlaps rather nicely with the methods and principles of Permaculture. And the system has been tested in the fire of El Nino. Quote: Conservation agriculture systems have been successfully tried and tested in eastern Zambia since 2011. More than 20,000 farmers have been exposed to CA by SIMLEZA-Africa RISING, the predecessor project of Africa RISING, which continues to sensitize and train more farmers. Farmers benefitted from increased use of CA technologies by gradually increasing crop yields leading to a solid yield benefit of 117% (1942 kg/ha) in a manually direct seeded maize crop following cowpea as compared with the conventional practice in the 2014/2015 cropping season. Rip-line seeding led to a 109% yield benefit (1993 kg/ha) as compared to the conventionally tilled practice. It is the years with seasonal dry-spells and erratic rainfall, such as this last El Niño year, where CA provides its greatest benefits to smallholder farming systems. End Quote. This stuff works, this will feed the world without any doubt. I used to think some large broad acre grain producers may be needed to cover severe drought and flood conditions. Upon reflection and through a real estate search of north western Europe I discovered nearly every village had a grain mill, local varieties of wheat were grown, well, locally. A return to this sort of diversification may be still be an option. Either way a workable transport system is essential to move foods from areas of surplus to those of deficiency. The principles of Conservation Agriculture are well established as workable. The previous quote showed how it can be introduced: by running it next to paddocks not using the CA principles. Seeing is believing. Our last article this week is from the blog Permie Flix. They tend to specialise in Permaculture related videos but this is a written post. Soil networks become more connected and take up more carbon as nature restoration progresses. These underground systems just become more fascinating for me with each passing article. Not only do these fungal communities communicate between trees, pass nutrients in exchange for sugar they also sequester carbon! I wonder what would happen if we ended deforestation and then started reafforestation? Do you think we could first ameliorate and then reverse the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere? It’s almost as if the great forests of the world act as a buffer to atmospheric variations. Who'd have thunk it? And that brings us to the end of this week’s podcast. (Produktion 2014)

When multinational companies want to tap into the massive pent-up consumer demand in emerging markets the first countries that they usually think of are China and India. But what about Africa asks Vijay Mahajan author of Africa Rising: How 900 Million Consumers Offer More Than You Think (Wharton School Publishing). Though often overlooked in global corporate growth strategies Africa as a whole has enough consumer power to give China and India a run for their money he argues. Mahajan a marketing professor at the University of Texas in Austin and co-author of an earlier book titled The 86% Solution: How to Succeed in the Biggest Marketing Opportunity of the 21st Century (Wharton School Publishing) talked with Knowledge at Wharton about Africa Rising.
