In this episode you'll hear: Success is framed as a subjective, evolving concept that shifts across life stages (20s, 30s, 40s, etc.), emphasizing relationships, self-awareness, and internal fulfillment over external validation. Personal definitions of success include emotional connections (e.g., family, friends), self-alignment with "intelligence" (inner purpose), and daily effort toward doing one's best. The session focuses on overcoming 'playing small' in careers through boldness and imagination, using examples like Sarah Blakely's cliff-jumping analogy and Jim Carrey's mindset. It emphasized mindset shifts (e.g., 'act as if' principles) over technical skills, with practical applications in leadership, relationships, and health. In this episode, you'll hear: The idea that individuals are not defined by their job, relationships, or careers—allowing them to creatively explore their potential as a 'game' rather than a fixed identity. Mathew's mentor advised him to act 'as if' he were already in a larger market (Washington, D.C.), leading to tangible career advancement—emphasizing mindset shifts over technical skills. Today we focus on enhancing personal growth through three pillars: 1) Developing self-awareness by managing reactions to stimuli and evaluating self-talk using Stephen Covey/Viktor Frankl principles 2) Releasing negative patterns through physical movement and micro-dosed wellness practices 3) Implementing accessible self-care actions tied to neurotransmitter release and stress reduction. In this episode you'll hear: Start by focusing on your relationship with yourself. Responsibility is framed as the 'ability to respond,' emphasizing personal agency in managing reactions to external stimuli. Create space between stimulus and response to evaluate internal reactions and shift beliefs or focus. Inspired by Stephen Covey and Viktor Frankl's work. Evaluate self-talk using a three-step framework: identify what works, what needs improvement, and what harmful patterns to eliminate (analogous to radio 'air checking'). Are You in the Middle of a Hard Transition? Learn How to Embrace Change with Cortney McDermott  In this episode, you'll hear: How to find peace in the space around pain  Tools to manage the discomfort around the unknown Ways to free yourself from limiting beliefs and thoughts. Cortney McDermott is a returning guest on the show and one of our favorite people to learn from. She has lived in Italy for more than half of her life. She tells us she went there to escape and is now facing the unknown and everything she left behind as she prepares to return to the US. In this conversation, we explore her fears, what she is letting go of, and how she's working through her grief by letting herself feel it fully, sharing her thoughts and feelings with people she trusts, and opening herself up to what they have to say. Change is inevitable. Sometimes we choose it, sometimes it blindsides us, and sometimes we see it coming but can't outrun it anymore. No matter how it comes to us, we have to embrace it and let it go. However, it's rarely easy and often involves grief. Recently, Mathew lost his mother and best friends of 35 years within 2 months of each other. In this episode, he talks about the headspace he is in, how he views this challenge from the universe, and the peace he has found through breathwork, transcendental meditation, and embracing the space around pain head-on rather than relying on self-medication.  Eventually, we will all find ourselves sitting in the middle of some transitional period. In those times, it can often seem difficult or even impossible to feel okay with not knowing what will happen next. You are not alone in this, and there are some tools you can use to help make it to the other side. The first step is to realize that the sense of control you think you have lost was a delusion and an illusion from the start. Anything can happen at any time, so instead of letting fear overcome us, think, “What if it all goes right?”.  “We're going to have to change form one way or another, so it's whether we do that consciously or unconsciously.”  Follow the podcast:  Listen on Apple Podcasts (link: https://apple.co/3s1YH7h)  Listen on iHeart (link: https://ihr.fm/3MEY7FM)  Listen on Spotify (Link: https://spoti.fi/3yMmQCE)    Get LFPWLI Merch here!   Resources: CortneyMcDermott.com LukisMac.co The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma Part 1: Why You Don't Have What You Want with Cortney McDermott Part 2: Creating More Time in Your Day with Cortney McDermott Part 3: Let Go and Laugh with Cortney McDermott Everything is Fine, but You Are Still Unhappy: Change Your Mindset with Cortney McDermott   Connect with Mathew Blades:  Twitter - twitter.com/MathewBlades Instagram - instagram.com/MathewBladesmedia/  Facebook - facebook.com/mathewbladesmedia/  Website - learnfrompeoplewholivedit.com/   Additional Credits: LFPWLI is managed by Sam Robertson

Episode 271: Quick Chat - Reframing Happiness with Cortney McDermottWelcome to the Love Your Story Podcast. I'm your host Lori Lee and you're here today for a Quick Chat. That's one great inspirational idea in 15 minutes or less. Today's show is about reframing happiness. Stay tuned for a quickie discussion with Corney McDermott, Author of Give Yourself Permisson, as we explore the idea of shifting the way you think about happiness so we can more easily find it. Join us in the audio program as we discuss:In the Wizard of Oz Dorthy goes on an adventure to find her way home. She heads out on this path - the Yellow Brick Road searching, along her path she has the support of the Good Witch Glenda looking out for her, she has companions who are learning along the journey also, and in the end she finds that no one else - no wizard existed who could do it for her…. I think in a way we all take this journey. We are told - no sold - all day long that we need this product, that promotion, this coach, this corner office and then we will be happy, but Cortney points out in her book - “if the something or someone isn't pointing back to yourself, then it simply won't work.” We talk about:Where do we find happy? What is this reframing happiness you speak of?In your book you say, “Aligning your ego to the divine truths in you is like a constant spontaneous enlightenment that doe snot rely on anything or anyone outside of you for its fulfillment.” Can you explain this?Happiness is an inside work.We are sold what happiness should be - what if our happiness doesn't align with what we are "supposed" to want? Most of the time we don't question this - but what happens when you equate happiness with "all the things and all the gold stars" and you still aren't happy. What if happy to me doesn't look like happy to everyone else?Externalities don't solve the problemsThe work is in your head.Accept what makes YOU happy. Even if it's different. You are okay with doing it YOUR way.Move away from what is distracting you from your own happiness.Dedicate more time to what your happiness looks like. Start small but build up your devotion to you.Focus on the self enough so you can experience the most from your relationships.Don't force things. Ease in and allow things to flow.Cortney shares a story of her own emotional youth. She shares how important it was to learn to accept her own depth of feeling. What does YOUR happiness feel like? Thanks for being with us today. That's one great inspirational idea in 15 minutes or less. Today's show is about this thing Corney calls Dimensions of Design. In a nutshell. Today's quick chat is on manifesting. Stay tuned for our quickie discussion with Corney McDermott, Author of Give Yourself Permisson, as we explore the ideas behind manifesting. Do you know how to manifest? Are you really good at it? I'm trying to understand it better, so if you're with me, tune in.Cortney and I look at:What Cortney has noticed about people not knowing what they want. This is to help people ask the right questions about what they want.Model includes distraction, delusion, demand, and design.Focus on the things you know are important to you, but that you don't have to do right now. When you focus on those things it clears out all the things that don't matter.Ask yourself this question: What are you putting off that you know you need to do?Focus on the really important things, let the less important things go and lots of time gets freed up.Designing your life by prioritizing this dimension makes time expand. We mold our lives from the inside with the decisions we make about our time.We talk about manifesting and how our attention is key to what we manifest.Allowing our attention to be fragmented slows down what we manifest. How much attention are you giving to guiding your thoughts and surroundings toward that vision?Want to get in touch with Cortney?Contact Cortney or buy her book:www.cortney mcdermott.comemail: cort@cortinc.comBook: Give Yourself PermissionAmazon Link to purchase:https://www.amazon.com/Give-Yourself-Permission-Development-Improvement/dp/B0C9SNG7NZ/ref=sr_1_1?crid=O1BQ0ZKORWVG&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.8amufz-UuP5MoibMVqy9ytZAjysDYtrkrHH-n0pAurOWTAGFh4YdjC_sUVHwmq7ksKOgWsl2vK4J_Xyj5hT1-A.ASsOCz1Ig8IdvvM1x8vBiqKQUJPx8ieg2Nlsolw-ZYA&dib_tag=se&keywords=give+yourself+permission&qid=1704998197&sprefix=give+yourself+permission%2Caps%2C226&sr=8-1

In this episode, you'll hear: Why do many high performers have a hard time cutting loose? We are not in control, but we can influence and adapt. What Cort learned on Richard Branson's private island What does it mean to “play” as an adult? Mathew and Cort do an improv exercise.  This is part three of three in a series with Cortney McDermott. Cort is a bestselling author, TEDx speaker, and mind-body expert with a Master of Science from the London School of Economics. She speaks four languages and currently splits her time between Italy and the US. There was a time when it looked like she had it all, but in reality, she was “miserably successful." She had a series of “cold shower moments” where she realized that, despite her accomplishments, she was unhappy. She looked around and saw that it didn't seem like anyone around her was feeling fulfilled. Finding her way out of that space and helping others do the same has become her calling and a new career. It can be easy to get caught up in the seriousness of life. With bills, doctor visits, and laundry, we often feel like we don't have time to relax or can't afford to let things spin out of control. It may be hard for you to let go because you do care so much. There is nothing wrong with caring, and as Mathew always says, “Letting go is not the same as not caring.” However, in reality, we rarely control most things happening in our lives, like our heartbeat, the weather, or people's actions. It can be hard to break away from the identities you've created around yourself: control freak, type A, high achiever... But there is an easier way to navigate life, and you may find the results are even better when you go with the flow. Cort tells us there was a time in her life when she was operating from a “push place," trying to force her will on life. Now, she has shifted to an intrinsically motivated place. By leaning into her internal instructions, she has found more peace and happiness in her life. Having time to listen to the universe can be seen as a luxury, but as Cort told us in part two of this series, she sees busyness as a lie, and by silencing the noise, space can be created. There is freedom in letting go of things we cannot control. What other people think of you is none of your business, and by eliminating that concern, we can begin to find more time to invest in ourselves. As we become adults, “play” can feel inaccessible, but Cort's advice is to just try new things and do what feels good. We are on a ball of dirt spinning through space. Ride the wave and do what you need to do to find happiness. We are not in control, but we can influence and adapt. Part 2: Creating More Time in Your Day with Cortney McDermott This is part two of three in a series with Cortney McDermott. Cort is a bestselling author, TEDx speaker, and mind-body expert with a Master of Science from the London School of Economics. She speaks four languages and splits her time between Italy and the US. There was a time in her life when it looked like she had it all, but in reality, she was “miserably successful." She had a series of “cold shower moments” where she realized that, despite her accomplishments, she was unhappy. She looked around and saw that it didn't seem like anyone around her was feeling fulfilled. Finding her way out of that space and helping others do the same has become her calling and a new career. Do you tie your value to your productivity? Do you think being busy gives you self-worth? Do you struggle with time management? Cortney tells us she used to be this person too, until one day, she removed the word “busy” from her vocabulary, flipped her relationship with time, and started to focus on the things that were really important to her, and eventually, it started to feel like time expanded. For many of us, the chaos starts when we open our eyes, roll over, and grab our cell phones. Cort tells us our brains are most programmable right before we fall asleep and right after we wake up, so avoiding the phone in bed is a small way to make a few minutes of time for ourselves and begin to cultivate stillness. In that stillness, we can access our innate intelligence and begin to see things more clearly. A lot of what we think we need to be doing is just noise. In stillness, we can find honesty that allows us to evaluate what we are spending time on and can actually let go of. In the same way, there are things that only we can do, like spend time with our family. By eliminating the "busyness," you will have more time for the important things. However, there are seasons in life when we feel the busyness serves us, like when we are expanding in our careers or building a family. Mathew reminds us that while there is a time to turn the volume up to 10, there are also times to lower it back down to 2. As long as you realize that no one but you can control the volume of your life, you will maintain the ability to manage your own time. As many of us know, a task will expand to the time it is allotted, leading to procrastination. By setting realistic yet ambitious timelines for ourselves, we maximize what we can accomplish. No matter what, remember that you always have permission to opt out. Identify the noise and areas where you are giving too much out of a sense of obligation or outside perception, then take back your time. Link new behaviors to existing behaviors, like listening to the audiobook while watching your kids practice or doing wall push-ups each time you go to the bathroom. Experiment with patterns and habits you can associate to make your life easier. In this episode, you'll hear: How to be intentional with your days when you are living a “busy” life Why are stillness and mindfulness so important in the morning? Opt out and experiment with associating new and existing patterns and habits. Part 1: Why You Don't Have What You Want with Cortney McDermott This is part one of three in a series with Cortney McDermott. She looked around and saw that it didn't seem like anyone around her was feeling fulfilled either. Finding her way out of that space and helping others do the same has become her calling and a new career. In this episode, Mathew and Cortney discuss why you feel like you don't have what you want. While Cort was having her mindfulness meditation one morning in Italy, it hit her: "You're not there yet because there is always somewhere outside of you." Most of us are chasing something outside of ourselves that we think we want and tie our happiness and fulfillment to getting it. However, a common approach, this thinking, will only set you up for failure. The only place to find real fulfillment is inside of ourselves. You are not after the thing. You are after what you think the thing will make you feel. “You have it all. You have it all. It's right there inside you, and it's the last place you'll look.” To understand your real desires and see that you have the capacity to achieve them already, you have to find stillness and surrender to a chaotic world. Being able to trust yourself is essential to being able to let go of control. Become an observer of life, take a deep breath, and understand that it's all already changing, whether you want it to or not. Your external environment is changing you, but at the same time, you have agency over your inner environment, which will shape the world around you and your perception of it. “If I am ok with myself, then everything will be ok around me.” “You're not there yet because there is always somewhere outside you.” In this episode, you'll hear: Understanding what we really want is the first step to getting there. Put effort into your current situation that you would put into moving on. Everything is Fine, but You Are Still Unhappy: Change Your Mindset with Cortney McDermott   Cortney McDermott is a bestselling author, TEDx speaker, and mind-body expert with a Master of Science from the London School of Economics. She speaks four languages and splits her time between Italy and the US. There was a time in her life when it looked like she had it all, but in reality, she was “miserably successful”. She had a series of “cold shower moments” where she realized that, despite her accomplishments, she was unhappy. She looked around and saw that it didn't seem like anyone around her was feeling fulfilled either. Finding her way out of that space and helping others do the same has become her calling and new career.   In this episode, Mathew and Cortney discuss their shared experience of working up to a successful career and then deciding it was time to “blow up what they built''. Approval, appreciation, and crafting an image can be addicting, but it can also make it harder to evaluate if your life is meeting your true needs or just bringing external validation. From a young age, people are given belief systems about who they are, and then they're expected to stay within those boundaries. In order to find our true paths, Mathew and Cort say we have to rewire those thoughts and escape the pressure of thinking we have to be something special or something other than what we feel called to be. Most people are running around with masks on, playing characters with personas, but Cort tells us we can choose who we are and reinvent ourselves every day. By letting go of what we think people expect us to be, we can access our full potential. Unless you can control your mind, you won't be able to give up trying to control life. Cort and Mathew both describe what it looked like when they let go of control and how they are still working to ride the wave of existence without trying to control the chaos. We do this in an attempt to achieve the illusion of safety, but in reality, all it does is limit us. Letting go doesn't mean you stop caring about things. Rather, you decide to let go of the addiction to caring what people think about you. It means deciding to follow your intuition and finding ways to transition from where you are now to where you want to be. Cortney outlines the science behind shifting your mindset, gives us practical tools on how to get started, and leaves us with her most important piece of advice to help us start the journey.   “I am not the belief... that doesn't have to define me.”   In this episode, you'll hear: What are “cold shower moments,” and what are they trying to tell us? How are Cortney's corporate skills applicable to the work she is doing now? My next guest is Cortney McDermott, an award-winning writer, speaker, and strategist to Fortune 500 executives who started to veer away from listening to her intuition when it was telling her to move away from the super busy corporate life she was in. She made the choice to ignore her intuition to keep moving on, doing things like living the high life and moving around the world on a corporate jet, but, on the inside, her intuition kept getting louder and louder to change what she was doing, until she had an epiphany while in the air. In this podcast interview, Cortney and I talk about that moment, and how she swung her life into almost the opposite way, teaching about meditation, and listening to your intuition, which is music to my ears.
