In this week's episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Cami Smith, an incredible artist and community builder who shared her inspiring creative journey. We explored the importance of connecting with our creative selves and overcoming the limiting beliefs that hold us back. Cami spoke of her passion for building community, how her mother influenced her art, her creative evolution from fiber arts to painting, and we discussed how creativity gives us a sense of control, and acts like a rudder for our lives. We also reflected on the wisdom of Jane Dunnewald, and how her message of self-love and acceptance is the foundation for a good life. We talked about the importance of being curious and that the universe does not take away gifts but uses them to propel us forward. How does your creativity make you feel more in control? Listen to the full episode for insights and ideas on how to trust your creative intuition. In our latest episode, we had the privilege of diving deep into a conversation with Cami Smith, a truly inspiring artist, community builder, and all-around creative force. Cami's journey, from fiber art and quilting to her current passion for painting, is a testament to the power of embracing change and trusting your own unique path. We discussed how our creativity helps us to feel in control of our lives, and how those feelings can guide us through difficult moments. One of the most compelling themes of our conversation was the importance of community. Cami, who says that “community is my middle name,” has spent years actively building connections within the fiber art world, and now as a painter. For Cami community provides a way for artists from around the world to connect. She is also very active in the digital gaming community, supporting programmers and other introverted creatives through community events. As Kate pointed out, the importance of community is vital, even though she herself is an introvert. We also delved into the challenge of overcoming our inner critics. Those nagging voices that tell us we're not good enough or that we're not doing things right. Cami shared how her own evolution as an artist has helped her silence that voice, as has her work in the game industry, where she encourages others to find their space. She has learned how to identify and reframe her negative thoughts, a practice that has been transformative for her, and Kate shared her process of journaling and reframing her thoughts by understanding the feelings and actions they provoke.Cami's personal journey is also deeply rooted in the influence of her artist mother. Cami shared stories about her mother's artistic practice, her unique way of seeing the world and the challenges she faced as a female artist in her time. Cami's mother inspired her to be independent and this value became an important part of Cami's life as well. We explored the idea that sometimes our life's experiences, including loss and change, can be seen like peeling an onion. Each layer that comes off reveals more of who we are and the potential for growth, and every loss is another opportunity.Drawing on the wisdom of Jane Dunnewald, we discussed the notion that creativity makes us feel more in control. Jane's powerful message of self-acceptance and self-love resonated deeply, as it is the starting point for a fulfilling and authentic life. Jane's work emphasizes curiosity, clarity, confidence and community, and these pillars act as guideposts for us as we navigate our way.Cami and Kate also explored the idea of bridging the gap between the art world and large corporations. This led to a discussion about the ways that larger institutions can incorporate human touches into their practices, and how the art community can build relationships that support these changes. Cami noted that Amazon has supported some of her community events for people in the digital games industry.Cami shared a bit about her sketchbook practices, and how she uses them to record her ideas, her random thoughts and her colours. During the pandemic she led an online course based on maps, and she is currently creating a piece that weaves memories into her art. Finally, we closed out our discussion with a reflection on one of Jane's most important messages: that the universe doesn't just give you something only to take it away. We acknowledged the truth in that, that sometimes things may feel like they are being taken away, however, in hindsight, we can see that those “losses” are really just catalysts for something new. This conversation left us feeling empowered and inspired. We hope that you will take a moment to listen, embrace your creativity and connect with your community. The universe is always giving, even when it seems like it is taking away.

Welcome back to Thrive Beyond Size, friends. Heading into winter and the holiday season, I've been really leaning into my crafts. I've done crafting my whole life, things like DIY kits and paint by numbers, and I've just found it very comforting and relaxing for me. So I want to talk about how doing crafts can support your journey with intuitive eating. I know! You're saying “What the hell does one have to do with the other” but bear with me. Crafting helps cultivate mindfulness by keeping us in the present moment. It helps us reconnect with the pleasure principle and reduces stress and these are all the same things we work on when we engage with intuitive eating. So let's explore that.    There are clear links between creativity and self-care. There's a level of mindfulness and being present that being immersed in doing a craft brings to us. We get more in tune with our bodies, our senses, how the yarn feels, and what the paint colors look like, and that awareness is also what helps us tune into our body's hunger cues. Like many things, we are not always masters of the crafts we pick up. They're not about the finished product and having a side hustle, they're about relaxation and creative expression. So by that metric, we learn to embrace a more compassionate attitude towards mistakes which also helps us in our attitude towards food. And that's what I dive into in this episode. How we can thrive by having a sense of agency, by channelling energy into a craft, and by creating a sense of joy and satisfaction which is a direct parallel to what we cultivate within our bodies when we practice intuitive eating.__About Dr. Michelle Tubman:Dr. Michelle Tubman is certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine, which means she understands exactly what's happening in your body when you diet. One of the Minnesota State Fair's new Creative Activities competition categories was nearly 25 years in the making. Back in the year 2000, Doris Rubenstein was disqualified from the Minnesota State Fair's pickle competition for the second time. The liquid in her pickle jar was cloudy, because she made them by a different process than the pickles the judges were used to. They were traditional kosher pickles, fermented in brine instead of preserved in vinegar. Rubenstein took the experience to local media and even turned it into a one-woman play that was performed at the 2017 Minnesota Fringe Festival and more recently in Winnipeg, Canada. This year for the first time, fermented pickles had their own category at the Minnesota State Fair. Rubenstein was a judge. She joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer live from the state fair to share her story — and some pickles.

Mindful Art and Creativity: Explore how engaging in creative activities can be a form of mindfulness

Mindful Life

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 12, 2023 3:38

In the bustling tapestry of daily life, where each thread represents a thought, an emotion, or a fleeting moment, there exists a sanctuary—mindful art. This refuge, woven from the fibers of creativity and consciousness, invites individuals to immerse themselves in the present moment, transcending the boundaries of time and space. Engaging in creative activities can be a profound form of mindfulness, a journey where the brushstroke of awareness meets the canvas of imagination. It's not merely about producing a masterpiece but about the process — the dance between inspiration and expression, the harmony of colors, and the symphony of shapes. Consider the simple act of sketching. As pencil meets paper, the mind, once scattered in the winds of distraction, gathers in the sanctuary of the sketchpad. Every stroke becomes a meditation, a deliberate act of presence. The swirls and lines on the paper reflect not only the artist's imagination but also the ephemerality of the now. The very nature of art demands attention to detail, an acute awareness of the interplay between light and shadow, form and void. In this focused attention, the mind unfurls from the cocoon of its wandering thoughts and lands softly on the wings of creativity. A sculptor molding clay, a painter caressing a canvas, or a poet weaving words—all are navigating the labyrinth of their own consciousness. Mindful art extends beyond the realm of traditional mediums. It encompasses the rhythmic dance of a dancer, the melodic composition of a musician, or the culinary wizardry of a chef. In each endeavor, the creator becomes a conduit for mindfulness, channeling the essence of the present moment into their craft. Creativity, at its core, is a celebration of the untamed spirit within us. It's about unearthing the dormant ideas, allowing them to breathe, and witnessing their transformation into tangible expressions. As one navigates the path of mindful art, each stroke, note, or movement becomes a brush with eternity, a communion with the infinite possibilities of the present. Furthermore, mindful art encourages the release of judgment and perfectionism. It invites creators to embrace the imperfections, recognizing that the beauty lies not just in the final product but in the evolution of the artistic journey itself. The canvas becomes a mirror, reflecting not only the external creation but also the internal landscapes of thoughts and emotions. So, let the brush move with intention, the notes resonate with awareness, and the words flow from the heart. In the realm of mindful art and creativity, the act of creation becomes a meditation, the artwork a testament to the profound connection between the artist and the present moment—a timeless masterpiece painted with the hues of mindfulness.

Corri, a harm reduction advocate, shares her journey of personal recovery from substance use and self-destructive behaviors. They discuss their role as the manager of drug user health at Nastad, a nonprofit organization focusing on harm reduction. Corri explains that Nastad operates a Technical Assistance Center for Harm Reduction, providing resources and training to support harm reduction practices for various organizations and individuals. They introduce harm reduction strategies like syringe exchange programs and safe consumption sites. Syringe exchange programs allow individuals to safely dispose of used syringes and obtain sterile ones, reducing the spread of infectious diseases and encouraging treatment. Safe consumption sites provide supervised spaces for substance use, with medical professionals present to prevent overdoses and offer resources. Phil inquires about the arguments against safe consumption sites, to which Corri emphasizes the importance of compassion and support over shame and stigma. They believe that meeting individuals where they are and providing a nonjudgmental environment can make a significant positive impact. Corri opens up about her personal recovery journey, their struggles with opioid use, and other self-destructive behaviors. They found recovery through therapy, community support, and engaging in creative activities such as yoga, aerial arts, and art journaling. Corri is open about occasional recreational substance use like marijuana and wine, which they view within a harm reduction context. They discuss their upcoming presentation at the Multiple Pathways to Recovery conference in August, where they plans to delve into harm reduction principles and how they can be incorporated into different practices. Throughout the conversation, Corri emphasizes the importance of harm reduction as a way to provide support, compassion, and resources to individuals struggling with substance use and promote their overall well-being.

Dr. Laura welcomes Dr. Nina W. Brown back to the show. Dr. Brown is a Distinguished Fellow American Group Psychotherapy Association, an eminent scholar and professor at Old Dominion University in Virginia, USA. Through her career, Nina has authored over forty books, ten of which are on the subject of narcissism. Dr. Brown discusses how her latest book is more a guide to helping individuals understand themselves in order to better cope with the narcissist in their life, a tactic she finds rewarding.Dr. Laura hears from Nina exactly how the approach of understanding self, of gaining awareness, leads to protecting ourselves and thriving into what Dr. Brown terms “positive revenge”. On the subject of wellness, Nina shares how she unwinds and refreshes outside of work by reading mystery and science fiction books. She shares advice on writing something every day, whatever bit you can - a sentence or paragraph even - in order to stay focused on a writing goal. Dr. Brown has a humble and incredibly wise outlook on life. Her insights on coping with narcissism and on cultivating the value of self will inspire everyone who hears her.“And so this is how we can develop ourselves, particularly with the empathy, because one of the defining characteristics of someone with a narcissistic personality disorder, is a lack of empathy. And so what we can work with is developing ourselves so that we can be empathic, that we can feel what the other person is feeling, without losing the sense of ourselves as being separate and distinct from them. We don't become enmeshed, we don't become overwhelmed.”  - Nina W. BrownAbout Dr. Nina W. Brown:Nina W. Brown, EdD, LPC, NCC, Distinguished Fellow American Group Psychotherapy Association, American Psychological Association Fellow is a professor and eminent scholar at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA USA.  She received her doctorate from The College Of William and Mary, and served as president of the Mid-Atlantic Group Psychotherapy Association, Secretary of the American Group Psychotherapy Association, President of APA Division 49 (The Society of Group Psychology and Group Psychotherapy), President of The Group Council and other positions.  She writes and publishes books on group psychotherapy and narcissism with 40+ books to date some of which have been translated into other languages. Dr. Brown's first book was Teaching Group Dynamics: Process and Practice and she also published the first book on psychoeducational groups which is now in the 4th edition. Other books on group therapy include Expressive Processes for Groups Counseling, Group Counseling for Elementary and Middle School Students, Creating High Performance Classroom Groups, Facilitating Challenging Groups: Leaderless, Open and Single Session Groups, Creative Activities for Group Therapy, and Effective Psychoeducational Groups. Dr. Laura continues her exploration into the subject of narcissism with her guest, eminent scholar and professor at Old Dominion University in Virginia, USA, Dr. Nina W. Brown. Nina is the author of over forty books, ten of which are on the subject of narcissism. Nina shares valuable insight from her own experiences and her extensive research into both psychology and narcissism.A personal experience with a difficult to deal with department chair was what initially sent Nina Brown into researching narcissism. She discovered that everyone on the faculty was feeling the same way as she was, devalued and frustrated by interactions with this person, so she set out to learn why. That led her deep into narcissism study and ten books on the subject. Dr. Brown acutely understands exactly why narcissistic individuals have such a toxic impact on the workplace. She explains why it can be difficult to initially spot the narcissist and what kind of coping strategies can be created once their behavior is revealed.“[Narcissism] can impact [cultures] by being and making the workplace toxic. It can impact individuals, and then it extends out to the whole group. And what it does, is it makes the workplace less effective. And it makes the workers less effective because they don't feel appreciated. They don't feel heard and understood. And they feel that perhaps they're being undercut in some way.” - Nina W. “Anything humans make of an artistic nature has to be literally brought into some kind of physical existence. Even if it is a lone person talking outside there has to be some kind of preparation of sorts, both the internal preparation of the one speaking, as well as how the physical setting is to be negotiated, the question of audience, if that is to be planned at all, the start and stop times of the speaking and so on. Interestingly we are very well aware of this when it comes to life outside the arts, the most prosaic or necessary things in life like housing or buildings in general. I believe we lose sight of this fact when its comes to the arts. That is, we tend to regard the arts as magically falling out of the sky and not a humanly made thing in the world like anything else, and one of the many missions of our podcast is to bring such matters into focus. I think Jaimee Wriston makes a wonderful representative of this principle, both because she has come out with a brand new novel, with a new publisher and we could discuss one of the most important aspects of being artist: getting a particular work out there. She also is so very articulate about such matters and that is important. It has been most interesting to follow the work of one particular writer like Jaimee Wriston. When first I encountered her novel Shark Girls on a long Amtrak ride alongside the Easter regional in a sleeper car I certainly had no idea about ever having a podcast or having its author on an episode. I am thankful for this opportunity and hope you enjoy hearing her discuss this aspect of being a writer in the world as much as you do reading her.” Jaimee's Bio,links to her beautiful worksJaimee Wriston Colbert is the author of seven books of fiction: How Not to Drown (2021), Vanishing Acts, Wild Things, Shark Girls, Dream Lives of Butterflies, Climbing the God Tree, and Sex, Salvation, and the Automobile. What are some small, simple ways to shift your perspective or maybe open up the creative work or hobby you had to sideline some time ago? We chat about these this week, and talk about the ways we have used these exercises to stir up our creative juices again and again. You can find us, Marian and Shaunna, at www.thecreativeexponent.com where we continue our passionate conversation around all things creative.

An FAA Center of Excellence for UAS, 3D printing a drone, the industry pressures FAA on UAS regs, drone privacy, a thought-controlled quadcopter, drones used for and against hunters, anti-drone legislation, Korean drones, and who needs drones when you have gulls? The News: Notice of Intent to Establish the FAA Center of Excellence (COE) for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Within the next year, the FAA intends to competitively select a Center of Excellence for UAS. The Center will conduct UAS related research, education, and training. It will also work with university partners on issues of mutual interest and concern. Following the Notice of Intent, the FAA will issue a Draft Solicitation for public comment, hold a public meeting in May, and issue awards within "the next year." Engineers print a functioning 1.5m-wide prototype unmanned aerial vehicle Additive manufacturing, popularly known as 3D printing, has been used by the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) at the University of Sheffield to build a UAV. The polymer UAV made of nine parts that snap together. It's thought to be an example of a low cost craft that could be built “on demand.” Aerospace, Consumer Tech Lobbies Join Forces to Push for Domestic Drone Regulations The aerospace and the consumer electronics industries are teaming up to pressure the FAA into moving quickly to define the regulations governing UAS operations. Mansfield woman says missing drone "freaked me out" An 18-year old student with hopes of becoming a filmmaker was flying his DJI Phantom when some kind of failure occurred. It went down around some homes, but couldn't be found after a 2-hour search. So he put fliers on doors, hoping someone would find the Phantom. One woman found the flier and contacted the police, the mayors office, and even State officials fearing she was being spied on. UNG students test drones to be controlled by thoughts In a project funded through the Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities, the University of North Georgia is using brain impulses to control a small quadcopter. Using an electroencephalogram-sensor headset, students are experimenting with control by thoughts without actually moving. Alaska bans hunters from using drones The Alaska Board of Game has wants to ban hunters from using drones to track animals. It's already illegal there to use manned aircraft to spot game and kill them on the same day. Colorado Bans the Use of Drones in Hunting Alaska is not alone in this. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission banned unmanned aircraft “from hunting, scouting, and any other pursuit involved in the taking of wildlife.” States Mulling Legislation to Ban Drones The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance is pushing states to take up legislation that protects “hunters, anglers and trappers from harassment by unmanned, aerial drones while exercising their legal right to pursue and take wildlife.” Editorial: Bill imposes pre-emptive limits on promising technology The Washington State Legislature has passed anti-drone House Bill 2789, which seeks to address privacy concerns. This “speculative lawmaking” looks at negative uses of drones, and not positive ones. The Bill does look for transparency and appropriate legal approval to collect personal information via drones. South Korea investigates two suspected North Korean drones As North and South Korea recently exchanged hostilities, some blue drones equipped with cameras crashed in South Korea. Gull drones to assist island deliveries Under the concept from Block Island called B.I.R.D.S. (Block Island Rural Delivery Service), restaurants and stores on the island will use gulls to deliver food and merchandise. Gull training is underway now.
