The Power of a Coaching SabbaticalYears ago, I learned that Nike offered sabbaticals to employees after 10 years of service. It made perfect sense - stepping away allowed them to recharge, gain new perspectives, and pour into their families. In the coaching profession, I've always believed sabbaticals should be the norm. Every coach I've met who has taken a year off, whether by choice or due to job circumstances, has experienced tremendous growth.Pete Carroll famously reinvented his coaching philosophy during his year off. Chip Kelly, Dan Mullen, Urban Meyer, and Bill Belichick all spent time in TV roles before returning to head coaching jobs. These high-profile examples highlight individuals that went from head coaching job to another.Today's Y-Option Podcast, presented by our founding partner 76, is with Arizona State offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Marcus Arroyo. After an extensive coaching career in both college football and the NFL, Marcus found himself on an unexpected “sabbatical” in 2023 following his time as head coach at UNLV. Instead of viewing it as a setback, he saw it as an opportunity for personal and professional growth.Marcus, a Broyles Award finalist in 2024, has coached standout quarterbacks like Josh McCown, Mason Rudolph, Nick Mullens, Justin Herbert, and most recently, Sam Leavitt. In December 2019, he achieved a lifelong dream when he was named head coach of the Rebels. Just months later, COVID-19 changed everything, forcing him to navigate unprecedented challenges. Fast forward three years, and his time away from the game would reshape his career.During his sabbatical, Marcus built a structured calendar to maximize learning. He visited top programs, including the LA Rams, LA Chargers, NY Giants, Texas Longhorns, and Utah Utes. He redesigned his entire playbook, a process that played a pivotal role in ASU's rise to a Big 12 title and a College Football Playoff berth in 2024.Inside the Episode:* In our conversation, Marcus and I dive into his mentors, his “why,” and the profound impact of his sabbatical. He shares what truly matters most, his nonnegotiables for quarterback play, how Sam Leavitt thrived under Kenny Dillingham at ASU and the math needed to fill the shoes of All-American Cam Skattebo. Of course, we also talk about 4th-down decisions and the mentality behind calling big-time plays in critical moments.More from Y-Option:* Beyond my conversation with Marcus, Jim Thornby and I continue our deep dive into the quarterback position as the Big 12 returns 10 of the conference's top 11 leading passers from last season, including Arizona's Noah Fifita, BYU's Jake Retzlaff, and Kansas State's Avery Johnson.* Additionally, I reflect on my time in Boulder with Coach Prime and the Colorado Buffaloes while speaking at the Nike Coach of the Year Clinic. As always, we are incredibly grateful for the continued support of Y-Option as we pour into this newsletter and podcast during the offseason.Much love and stay steady,YogiThis episode was executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor RenThis podcast is a Best Coast Media productionY-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. To believe in oneself is a powerful thought. We've seen it drive elite athletes for centuries. It's been the foundation of one of the most successful shows in recent history, Ted Lasso. And for over 25 years, I've heard quarterbacks use that word - belief - time and time again. At my core, I trust that the best coaches, players, and performers must face moments of adversity. Hundreds of them. They must stare it in the eye, welcome it, and compete through it. We all have our own moments to reference. And if you're a quarterback, you likely have a few that stand out. It's such a defining trait that we use it as a core pillar at the Elite 11 when evaluating QBs. Every single NFL coach or GM I've ever spoken with about a prospect asks about it.Bottom line: If you want to elevate in life - or under center - when adversity shows up, you better believe you can find a way through it.Former Minnesota Golden Gopher quarterback Max Brosmer is a blueprint of that mindset. He joined the latest episode of Y-Option, presented by founding partner 76, to break down the ‘why' behind his success.I was introduced to Max through Seth Makowsky, an elite mindset coach and the founder of Poison Pawn. Seth has trained some of the top quarterbacks in the nation through chess, using a unique approach to developing their mental game. After visiting with Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck and co-offensive coordinator/QB coach Greg Harbaugh Jr. this past fall, it was clear that Max was a special soul. A player whose work ethic stood out in my 25 years around the quarterback position and in the lengthy coaching careers of both Fleck and Harbaugh Jr.He's also a gamer.I was on the call for back-to-back wins for Minnesota this season against USC and UCLA. In both games, with the outcome on the line, Max met the moment. After you listen to our conversation, it won't surprise you why he delivered when his best was needed. Now, Max is on his path toward the NFL Draft. Ahead of his Pro Day this week, he took time to share some of his core principles as a competitor, the impact of the Minnesota coaching staff on his development, and his experience in the draft process. He also gave some insight into his former team's QB room as spring ball in Minneapolis kicks off this week. (Spoiler: He did the interview from Drake Lindsey's apartment.)If you're unfamiliar with Max's journey, here's the quick version: He was a 2-star recruit out of Georgia who's only offer was to New Hampshire, ranked the 255th overall QB prospect in the Class of 2019—the same class that produced Bo Nix and Jayden Daniels. Think about that for a second. Max was ranked 255th at his position in the entire country, and in six weeks, he'll be on an NFL roster! Safe to say that Ted Lasso would be impressed with his personal belief.Max went on to star at New Hampshire, overcoming injuries and adversity along the way. Through it all, Max never flinched. His maturity and discipline became defining traits. Once his football acumen caught up to his work ethic, he made his dream a reality - playing college football in the Big Ten.For high school quarterbacks and college players chasing a dream, this is a must-listen conversation. And if you're curious about what it's like to play for Coach Fleck and Coach Harbaugh, our discussion paints a vivid picture that might just inspire you to visit their facility.Speaking of learning, today's Y-Option discussion before our interview with Max focused on the quarterback position in the Big Ten for 2025. After diving into depth charts, film on new transfers, and incoming freshmen, my focus settled on the returners in the deepest league in the nation. What should Year 2 look like in the same system with the same staff? If you're on the QB path, be sure to check out our conversation with Mark Sanchez on what allows a quarterback to succeed in the NFL. It's one of my favorite episodes from Season 1 of Y-Option.I'm on my way to Boulder for the Nike Coach of the Year Clinic, and I'll be sharing insights on the Buffs, Elite 11 in LA, and spring ball as it ramps up nationwide. Be sure to subscribe to Y-Option's newsletter for all our content this spring.Much love and stay steady.YogiThis episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor RenThis podcast is a Best Coast Media productionY-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. I've become a better coach because I have the opportunity to work with these pro women and I'm excited to continue to get better, learn from them, and make sure that they're at the center of everything that I do. My guest for today's episode is Diljeet Taylor. We had her on the show last fall after she won the NCAA Cross Country Championships with her BYU women. For those of you who aren't familiar, she's one of the most transformative coaches in the sport. She's built BYU's women's cross country program and distance program into a national powerhouse, coaching NCAA champions, Olympians, and creating one of the strongest cultures in collegiate running. Now she's stepping into an even bigger role, leading a professional training group with Nike while continuing to coach at BYU. Nike has announced Swoosh TC for Oregon, Utah, and Arizona. It's being described by the brand as a network of elite athletes, coaches, and innovators working together to push the boundaries of performance and progress. Coach Taylor will oversee the Utah division, Jerry Schumacher will head Oregon along with Shalane Flanagan, and Mike Smith will lead the club in Arizona beginning in July 2025 in partnership from Rachel Smith. In this conversation, we make sense of what all of that means. We get into the behind-the-scenes details of her new role, how she's balancing coaching, both collegiate and professional athletes, and what it takes to develop elite runners at the highest level. We also touch on the mindset of success, the importance of culture, and the transition from NCAA to professional racing. Coach Chris Bennett joins the podcast. His voice might be familiar to you if you've ever used the Nike Run Club training app. He is the Swoosh's global head coach. He's been a longtime supporter of CITIUS MAG and I've always wanted to get him on the show. Now seems to be the perfect time because it feels like we're on the cusp of a potential running boom once the pandemic subsides. People are getting out there whether it's part of their regular routine and training or they're discovering the sport for the very first time. I have a few friends who are getting started and they don't have a GPS watch or Strava so they simply have downloaded the Nike app and started going on these guided runs with Bennett. We spend much of the first half discussing what that's been like to see and then we'll take a dive into his own career from being a New Jersey star, running for UNC, learning from coaches like Jerry Schumacher, Vin Lananna and Frank Gagliano, returning to coach at Christian Brothers Academy (where they became a national powerhouse), what his mantra Every Run Has a Purpose means and ultimately watching his son now come after his own PRs. ▶ Follow Coach Bennett: https://www.instagram.com/coachbennett/ Support CITIUS MAG & pick up some merch on CITIUSMAG.com ▶ Follow us: twitter.com/CitiusMag | instagram.com/citiusmag | facebook.com/citiusmag ✩ Connect with Chris via Email: chris@citiusmag.com | twitter.com/ChrisChavez | instagram.com/chris_j_chavez
Bec openly shares her methodology to tackling a life without regret - by creating connection and goals that set your soul on fire. As an athlete, Bec chooses races where the odds are stacked against her. Last year her team broke the female record at the Speed Project - a 340 mile nonstop relay race from LA to Vegas. She started that race in the midst of personal heartbreak and describes the power of the sisterhood (& her amazing Dad) that allowed her to physically & mentally surpass what she thought she was capable of. Bec toed the start line at the Infamous Barkley 100mile marathon to challenge the belief that no female can finish the race. She is the founder of female running movement Here We Run and she shares the difficult mental shift to motherhood from the athlete perspective. She discusses the challenges she faced as a teenager charging to the Olympic dream, providing wisdom for young female athletes. Her coaching style is rooted in care, connection, conversation and commitment - whether you are the weekend warrior or professional athlete (and everything in between). On this week's episode of Inside the Headset we speak with Scotty Walden, receivers coach for the University of Southern Mississippi. We discuss how he became a collegiate play-caller while serving as a graduate assistant, some of the lessons he learned as a 26 year-old head coach, and he offers some advice for young coaches. Coach Walden's career began at Sul Ross State as a graduate assistant in 2012. Before the season began, the offensive coordinator left, and the head coach handed Walden the reins to the offense as a 22 year-old in his first year of coaching. After leading the NCAA in total yards and averaging almost 49 points per game that season, Coach Walden was named the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at East Texas Baptist University (2013-2015). In 2016, he was named head coach at ETBU. Walden is in his second season coaching receivers at Southern Mississippi. This week’s guest is track and field coach Rana Reider. For those of us who live on the internet, we don’t often hear much of Rana’s training and philosophy, but he is one of the absolute best in the world. Rana spent time as an NAIA track coach before coaching at NCAA schools Florida and Kansas State, as well as UK Athletics, and he has been taking on some of the biggest names in the sport today, such as Christian Taylor and Dafne Schippers as a private track coach. He has been awarded the NAIA National Coach of the Year honor in 2000, and 2011 Nike Coach of the Year. Rana’s use of technology in the midst of a training session is truly incredible to hear explained. He makes use of pieces like the 1080 sprint and the Freelap system, in addition to Optojump and other tools, all in one run. Rana also takes multiple blood tests during the course of training sessions to determine how to create an optimal flow of the training session. Listening to Rana talk was one of the rare opportunities for me so far in recording this podcast. My evernote also gained a few extra pages after going through this recording again, as there were many great ideas of coaching and training. Although Rana uses technology frequently, this episode will show his wisdom in terms of when, and when not to use it with his athletes, and how to take the optimal path in different training situations and athlete types. It is my pleasure to bring to you a training and technology talk with coach Rana Reider. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Rana’s background in the field Rana’s coaching style Technology and data collection in the scope of sprint training and athletics Autoregulating based on technology and monitoring How Rana learned to create his workouts and training cycles Assisted and resisted sprinting and Rana’s use of the 1080 sprint Monitoring in the weightroom Saliva and blood testing Data collection and time of year Quotes: “Different athletes get motivated differently; I have to mold my coaching style on the track differently for each athlete” “We’ve figured out this year, the intensity this year has gone to a level that is so high that I’ve had to monitor more than I normally would; heart rate, blood, technical and state of mind” “Early in the training year, I give them a little bit of feedback, but I don’t show them a whole lot of film because I want them to understand the cues I’m giving them; from a spatial awareness and technical standpoint, they need to learn what they’re doing” “(Expanding on that last point) I do want them to understand that they can work hard, they can start to get fit, and they don’t need to immediately see if on video. You have to get fit, you have to understand what you can and can’t do and why you are going to get sore, and what training load means” “If we get to the point where we’re at 5 runs and they’re falling off, I’m going to cut them off…that’s on the high high level. The developmental athletes I think, they have to start working through some of those fatigue factors and understand that when the body gets into a state of fatigue and high lactic levels, they are going to have to work through that because they are not going to feel perfect all season long” “One of the reasons I think I’m successful is I have a pretty good eye, I let myself coach” “You have to know, what does each exercise, what does each run do to each athlete” “I use the 1080 sprint between 3-4 times per week depending on what the group is… we use it every acceleration session” “With the Gym Aware (the athletes) can watch each other lift and it becomes more of a contest to see who is lifting the fastest at what percentage of their max. It becomes a game and keeps them interested” “We stick to the major lifts,

On this edition of High School Football America, host Jeff Fisher talks with Lubbock head football coach Jason Strunk about the ups-and-downs of the 2013 season that included Strunky suffering some serious health issues on the sidelines during a game in September. The west Texas coach also discusses his High School Football America blog called The Turnaround. Fisher's second guest is Pennsylvania Hall of Fame high school football coach Jim Tkach talking about his upcoming Nike Coach of the Year Clinic in Allentown, Pennsylvania that will feature top-notch college football coaches: Jimbo Fisher of national champion Florida St.; James Franklin of Penn St.; Paul Chryst of Pitt; Paul Rhoads of Iowa St. and Pete Lembo of Ball St. The Allentown clinic will be held February 27th through March 1st.
On this edition of High School Football America, host Jeff Fisher talks with Matt Webb, head coach at Maryville High School in Missouri. In 2013, the Spoofhounds won their second straight Missouri Division 3 high school football championship, but even more amazing was that the school's entire football program - from varsity down through the 7th grade team - was a perfect 45-0. If you add-in the town's university, Northwestern Missouri State, which won the NCAA Division II championship, Maryville was a perfect 60-0 in 2013. Also on the show is Chuck Rohe, director of the Nike Coach of the Year Clinics, which put on 16 clinics around the country for coaches at all levels.
