The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - break all the rules to get their pregame show to you early...Friday afternoon, to be exact. And that's because Washington is playing arguably the earliest game they ever have Saturday morning when they square off against Iowa at 9 am Seattle time (that's 11 am Iowa City time). So we wanted to make sure you could listen to our pregame show now instead of having to wait until literally the crack of dawn to check us out. And there's another good reason for that; we've got a lot to talk about. We set the scene with the early start and also talk about how travel has definitely affected not just Washington, but the Big Ten teams that have had to go at least two time zones to play a game of football. How much will that impact the Huskies, especially since they suffered a lot of self-inflicted wounds in their 3-point loss at Rutgers. Then they quickly move to the Michigan game to give their thoughts on what they learned about Washington as the Huskies move forward to this game at Iowa City. Are they slowly building the program in Jedd Fisch's image? Are they slowly cleaning up the penalties and other self-inflicted nonsense that cost them two wins so far this season? Then the preview moves to Washington's Saturday opponent, the Iowa Hawkeyes. They talk about Washington's offense versus Iowa's defense and can UW ball control and find enough run game to utilize their play-action game and take advantage of a Hawkeyes secondary that has appeared susceptible to some chunk plays in a way you wouldn't normally expect from a Phil Parker-led defense? And how does Demond Williams factor into tomorrow's game plan? After a quick commercial break the guys come back and flip the script. They talk about what Washington can do to try and limit Iowa's high-powered run game, led by running back Kaleb Johnson. Can they turn the tables and force the Hawkeyes into having to try to win the game via Cade McNamara's arm? And then they also spend a couple minutes talking about the special teams battle. Now that Grady Gross hit his last two field goals to help Washington beat Michigan, is he fixed? Scott offers a recruiting update (there is also a great podcast with Scott and Brandon Huffman recapping the big recruiting weekend for the Michigan game), and Kim also talks about Washington's newest men's basketball recruit - SG Courtland Muldrew from Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. And then the show is capped off with the guys' final thoughts on what they expect to see tomorrow at Kinnick Stadium. In this minisode, Andrew tries to guess whether NBA players, back when they were five-star blue-chip prospects in high school, went to their local public school, a nearby private school, or went to pipeline schools like Oak Hill Academy. Enjoy!
Josh Smith joins the show and takes us back to getting drafted by his hometown Atlanta Hawks straight from Oak Hill Academy. Smith was one of 21 players that were drafted straight from High School between 2003 and 2005.Getting drafted to your hometown team sounds like a dream. But what if your hometown team also happens to be one of the worst teams in NBA history? Well, the 2005 Hawks went 13-69, good for the 8th worst winning percentage in the modern NBA (since 1980). Smith opens up about his rookie year, his complicated relationship with Head Coach Mike Woodson, Joe Johnson, Antoine Walker and more.Smith had a hell of a career. He's one of six players since 1990 to put up 100+ steals and 200+ blocks in a season (Hakeem, David Robinson, Andrei Kirilenko and Ben Wallace). He made an All-Defensive Team. The season is currently underway, so Adam decides now is a good time to take a week off and go to Canada...so what better subject to talk about then our fine neighbors to the north? kids from up there used to be tiny small school prospects (read: Steve Nash) now are becoming 5* prospects, staying in the country (sorry Oak Hill Academy), and becoming early lottery picks. So see what the fuss is all aboot, eh?
If you know basketball then you know Steve Smith, the legendary coach from Oak Hill Academy. Under his leadership, Oak Hill was a National Champion 9 times, he coached 32 McDonald's All Americans, over 40 NBA players that either attended Oak Hill or graduated from Oak Hill (the likes of Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Rajon Rondo, Rod Strickland) and a National Coach of the Year 4 times. You may know the name but maybe not the story of how Oak Hill was built! I enjoyed this conversation and I hope you do as well!
On the latest episode of the Rex Chapman Podcast, the guys are joined by former NBA All-Star and now Head Coach of the Vanderbilt Commodores, Jerry Stackhouse. 12:10 - Basketball will always be a part of Stack's life, describing his love for the game. Now in this next chapter of his career, he enjoys being able to share it with others. 15:45 - How good was Stack's Oak Hill Academy team? Were they even good enough to match up with his UNC team? 23:00 - From Oak Hill to Chapel Hill, Stack says his time with Steve Smith, and then Dean Smith, was a formal education in the art of basketball. 25:30 - For all the critics of North Carolina's academics, Stack is a prime example of what it takes to be a diligent student athlete. Now as the Head Coach at Vanderbilt, he takes pride in setting the standard for academics in college basketball. 29:10 - That wasn't a scowl Stack was playing with, it was seriousness. You have to be serious to not only make the NBA, but stay in the NBA. It was especially hard coming into a losing situation after the success in high school and college. 34:30 - The comparisons to Michael Jordan were always flattering, but Stack never saw himself as the next MJ after following him at North Carolina. Leave it to Mike to turn that into bulletin board material when they battled in the NBA. 34:45 - Stackhouse on Michael Jordan 40:30 - How NIL has impacted college athletics, and what approach Stack and Vanderbilt has taken to enhance their platform for the student athletes. 51:00 - What impact will Scotty Pippen Jr have at the NBA level after wrapping up his collegiate career at Vanderbilt? Who's the next man up for Vandy with Pippen Jr headed to the next level? 56:00 - The rivalries in the SEC are alive and well, especially when talking about the Commodores and the Wildcats. It can be tough for a coach to yell at you, and in our current culture, parents can get involved to try and tone things down a bit. But from his earliest days learning the game from his father all the way to the NBA, Steve Blake learned how to play the point guard position right by learning lessons in toughness and resilience from old school coaches who weren't afraid to yell when necessary. A precocious high school talent, Steve won a state championship at Miami High with Udonis Haslem, the iron man who is currently the oldest player in the NBA, and future USC coach Frank Martin. He then transferred to Oak Hill Academy, the Virginia prep school that has produced such pro talents as Carmelo Anthony, Rajon Rondo, and Jerry Stackhouse, where he played for legendary coach Steve Smith. Blake then benefited from the tutelage of Hall of Famer Gary Williams, starting at the University of Maryland as a freshman and leading the Terrapins to a national championship. Blake then spent 13 seasons in the NBA with the Wizards, Lakers, and three stints with the Blazers. In this episode, Steve shares:What it means to be a pass-first point guardHow to develop quiet leadership when you're an introvertWhy he embraced the tough love of Frank Martin, Steve Smith, and Gary WilliamsHow to handle game-day pressure What makes Udonis Haslem such a wonderful teammate and friend To see more from Steve, follow him on Instagram.

Basketball is in Connor's blood; his dad, Ryan Odom, played college ball at Hampden-Sydney College before coaching at Charlotte, Lenoir-Rhyne, UMBC, and Utah State. Connor's grandfather, Dave Odom, played college ball at Guilford College before coaching at East Carolina, Wake Forest, and South Carolina. You'll hear stories about Cam Thomas, UMBC upsetting UVA, Wake Forest and Tim Duncan, and legendary coach Dave Odom scolding me and Connor for dunking on an 8 foot hoop many years ago.
Jerry Stackhouse has quite the basketball resume and he joins Jed Hughes for Episode #90. After a high school career that included one season at famed Oak Hill Academy, Stackhouse returned to his home-state at the University of North Carolina and starred under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach Dean Smith. After being a top selection in the NBA Draft, Stackhouse was a two-time All-Star during his 18-year career. He then began the transition to coaching and eventually coached at the professional level for the Toronto Raptors and Memphis Grizzlies. Coach Stackhouse has now completed his third season at the helm of the Vanderbilt men's basketball program. At the college level, as a coach, recruiting, player development, culture, and the transfer portal are key components. Two Commodores have been selected in the NBA Draft recently and a third draft prospect is currently on the roster.

On this episode, we’re circling back a moment in basketball that propelled us to where the game is today. At the time, Brandon Jennings went from Oak Hill Academy to the Euroleauge, it was a move that puzzled and surprised many. Instead of going the college route, one of the top prospects in his class, Brandon knew he had the pro makeup, so he went overseas to make it happen. When he was drafted number ten overall in 2009, he entered the league with a year of pro experience under his belt and some money in his pocket. For Gil, Brandon was always that exceptional player who could score at will, a shoot first point guard and a shot creator, but he also had the vision to go against the grain. At the time the move made headlines, and only a few players followed suit. But as we’re seeing now, a pathway has been made where they don’t need to depend the college system to progress their careers. As for Brandon, enough time as gone by to look back at that chapter in his life with recognition for what he accomplished and where it took him to next.Presented by: Babbel, Athletic Greens and Dr. SquatchTHE NO CHILL PODCASTA No Chill ProductionEXECUTIVE PRODUCERS: Tim Livingston, Gilbert Arenas, Mike BotticelloHOSTED BY: GILBERT ARENAS and MIKE BOTTICELLOVideography/Editor: Steven Rhys FosterDirector: Steven Rhys FosterSound: Alfonso CanoTalent Coordinator: Thomas ScottProduction Assistant: Ethan Zakarin

Tara talks to Ian Johnson, author of The Bounce and the Echo: Dying to Love a Game. Johnson is a former Division 1 basketball player at Davidson College and a five year veteran of European Leagues. In the book he talks about his basketball journey, his mental health journey, his effort to move on from basketball to the next phase of his life and how he came to love the game again. All of this is intertwined with anecdotes about the history of basketball. Tara talks to him about why he wrote the book and they share a mutual appreciation of how sports reflects history (and history is reflected in sports). Johnson discusses what it was like playing at Oak Hill Academy with Carmelo Anthony, playing against LeBron in high school, and balancing (or trying to balance) being a student and an athlete in college. Finally, Johnson shares some radical ideas about how to change youth sports that he believes would lead to more well-rounded and healthier players. Highlights 1:00 Intro and pandemic talk. 4:00 Early basketball memories, going from being a soccer player to a basketball player. 7:00 Inspiration behind The Bounce and The Echo. A lot of it was about figuring out how to create his own narrative about his basketball career. 10:30 Why did he weave the history of basketball and historical anecdotes into his own story? 14:30 History is reflected in sport and sport is a reflection of history. 17:30 What was it like to be in such a competitive situation when he was very young? 23:00 Trying to describe how good it feels to play the game of basketball. 27:00 What was it like playing on a team with Carmelo Anthony and all the attention he brought? 29:00 Shout out to school uniforms 30:45 Playing against LeBron’s team in high school. 34:00 What was it like at Davidson and balancing being a player and an athlete. 36:00 Exploring mental health and athletes. 40:00 Playing in the Czeh republic, frequenting a speakeasy 41:00 Suggestions for how the youth game could help lead to better mindset for athletes when they become adults. 52:00 A week on board the cruise ship in Rio with the 2016 Olympic basketball teams. In this latest episode of Across The Margin:The Podcast listeners are introduced to the latest release from ATM Publishing, The Bounce and The Echo, with an interview with author Ian Johnson. Ian is a former pro basketball player who, for the first three decades of his existence, saw his life revolve entirely around the game. Ian played high school basketball at the prestigious Oak Hill Academy alongside Carmelo Anthony, was a star player during his four years at Davidson College in the lead up to the Stephen Curry era, and went on to play five years of professional basketball in Europe. He won multiple championships and a large number of personal accolades along the way, but Ian spent his career living a double life, both as a committed athlete who thrived on competition and as a skeptical observer who struggled to accept that he was devoting his soul to a game. Ian was a star in a cutthroat system, yet also an unwitting cog, his outward personality indentured to a sport, a fact he didn’t fully understand until he tried to walk away from the game at the age of 27.The Bounce and The Echo is a memoir enriched by the enthralling history of the sport of basketball, from its inception unto its current state. It is the story of one person’s attempt to discover himself anew while on a venture to find peace with a game he so desperately wanted to love. The Bounce and The Echo is a story for every athlete who has ever picked up a ball and wondered why, and a book for anyone who has ever wanted to know what happens to a star athlete once the spotlight fades away. In this episode, we learn what compelled Ian to write such a vulnerable and telling memoir, what the word “Dying” in the subtitle of the book truly refers to, how Ian’s struggles with mental health threatened his career and well-being, what the game of basketball and sports in general can better do to prepare athletes for life’s challenges, and much, much more.
