Sometimes to move forward, you have to look back and in today's episode Annie is joined by her dear friend Clara Amfo who opens up for the first time publicly about the life-altering event in her childhood that changed her forever. Broadcaster, pop culture aficionado and British ‘it girl' Clara Amfo is an unstoppable force when it comes to British tv and radio. She has hosted many of the UK's biggest music and cultural moments, from Glastonbury to the BRIT Awards. But for Clara, living authentically is at the heart of everything she does and earlier this year, after a decade of success on BBC Radio, including on 1xtra and presenting the Live Lounge and Future Sounds on Radio 1, Clara felt it was time to explore different parts of her professional and personal journey, marking a time of significant change and reflection. In this radically honest episode, Clara opens up to Annie about something she has never discussed publicly before. She reveals how unpacking her past has helped her to judge herself less, de-root feelings of shame and fight for deeper self love and acceptance. Clara shares the realities of being a black woman in the spotlight. They also discuss the search for contentment in a world that often demands more. This deeply personal conversation between friends is a lesson in understanding your own power and showing up as your true self despite all the odds.Warning: this episode discusses acts of racism and child sexual abuse. If you need additional support after listening to this episode you can use the links below to find more information on some places to go:Call the Samaritans on 116 123 https://www.samaritans.org/https://www.victimsupport.org.uk/https://247sexualabusesupport.org.uk/https://www.survivorsuk.org/GET IN TOUCHContact us at changespod@gmail.com with your emails and voice notes.Changes is a deaf friendly podcast, transcripts can be accessed here: https://www.anniemacmanus.com/changesPlease Note: The transcript is automatically generated in case you come across any typos or misquotes during your reading. Electronic Pop Trio, LOWES, consists of vocalist Evie and producer/multi-instrumentalists Luke and Jamie. The bands music is euphoric and emotional, imbued with an authenticity that makes it both powerful and vulnerable. LOWES' musical footprint harks back to Awake At Night, a song put on soundcloud that set the music industry on fire in 2018. Fast forward a few years and the band are now one of the most sought-after vocalists in the UK. 2023 will see the band following up the critically acclaimed ‘Late Nights Visions EP', 'Adidas & Pearls' (with Vintage Culture & Solardo) and ‘Lucid Love' with Cristoph. The latter was a BBC Radio 1 Hottest Record with Clara Amfo, the band's seventh Hottest Record to date adding to a whole host of previous support at radio from Jack Saunders, BBC Introducing, Arielle Free, Danny Howard and Capital Dance. The continuous support from BBC Radio 1 in particular saw LOWES singer Evie named the Best Dance Vocalist at 2021's Radio 1 Dance Awards. The past couple of years have been characterised by a string of high profile collaborative singles with the likes of CamelPhat, High Contrast, Franky Wah, KC Lights, Sigma, Alan Fitzpatrick, The Prototypes, Vintage Culture and Solardo, culminating in over 65 million streams to date. Hailing from rural North West England and each with a lifetime of musical experience, having all been immersed in music since a very young age, the band meets up in-house to write, record, and self-produce their own work. Evie's powerful vocals, combined with the brilliant song-writing ability, and production prowess of Luke and Jamie make for a euphoric and exciting prospect. Gladly peppered with a note of sarcasm, a dose of cynicism, or at best a tint of darkness, LOWES' music and lyrics often reflect darker ideas and honest fears. Maybe it's this authentic reflection of life, this truth, that makes LOWES and their sound so special.

Come on Barbie, let’s go party! Radio 1 host, Strictly Come Dancing star, podcast host of This City and *official* Barbie doll, Clara Amfo joins me for this episode of Make It Reign.Since joining Radio 1 in 2015, Clara went on to host the iconic Live Lounge and has done everything from interviewing Jay-Z, to playing basketball with Justin Bieber at his house. After the death of George Floyd in June 2020, Clara showed just how powerful her voice is when she delivered an anti-racism speech in her radio show, concluding that “You cannot enjoy the rhythm and ignore the blues. And I say that with my chest.” It went viral, and she was included in British Vogue's activism issue, and was made a 'Barbie Role Model’ by Barbie who created a doll version of her! Since we chatted, it’s been announced that Clara will step into Annie Mac's headphones to present the Future Sounds show from September. Go on, Queen! In this episode Clara opens up finding, and staying true to, her voice, the grief she continues to experience after the death of her father and why it is MORE than ok to be single. All the women who independent throw your hands up at me, because I couldn't agree more! I hope you love listening to Queen Clara just as much as I did chatting to her! Love, Josh xxP.S. I really hope that you and your loved ones are all well and staying safe and healthy. I'm extremely happy to be back with you all for our new season. Given the global crisis caused by Covid-19, we are releasing this in an increasingly uncertain and scary time.  Now, more than ever, it is important to create safe spaces that encourage open and honest conversations and help us stay connected. While we did debate as to whether or not to release one of the many podcasts we've already recorded pre-Covid-19, we felt it important to share with you what we had already started earlier in the year and revisit some of these conversations. Listening to these initial podcasts, it is so jarring to hear how different our lives and circumstances were. Our first episode is with the brilliant Clara Amfo that we recorded back in January. Clara and I talk about our time at the Year of Return in Ghana. How we're honoured to have Ghanaian heritage, and the importance of people in the diaspora to fly the flag. We talk about Clara's new podcast – This City with Clara Amfo – which is all about what London means to her guests. We share our views on social media and how highly confusing navigating the unwritten rules can be. How on one hand we loathe the negativity that comes with Instagram, but on the other, love the sense of community you can find from like-minded women. Being single, actively choosing to be single, and celebrating our independence definitely gets some deserved airtime. And we talk about not wasting time on the wrong people, understanding your values, being kind to yourself, and filling up your own cup rather than expecting others to fill it up for you. It really is so good to be back. Enjoy listening and mad, mad, mad amounts of love. Clara Amfo is a radio and TV broadcaster best known for her work on BBC Radio 1, (she currently presents Radio 1's infamous Live Lounge). On the 7th March, 2015, Clara's dad's life was cut short by a sudden and unexpected heart attack. He was in Ghana attending a funeral at the time. Clara - who was in Paris about to run the half marathon - had to put her life on pause and get back home to her family. Feeling overwhelmed and craving escapism, Clara threw herself into her new role as BBC Radio 1's Official Chart show and unhealthy romantic relationships. Eventually, however, grief caught up with her and she had to face what had happened, and how that felt. In this episode we talk all things death, grief, work, loss, relationships and...daddy issues! SEASON FINALE 2019. BRING ON 2020.
