Farming is a common way of life in Shelby County in Northeast Missouri, but farming doesn't come without it's challenges. In the last few years, it was found that the county had one of the highest rates of suicide by firearm in the state.

The Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture (CCUA) started in 2008. Its mission is feeding and educating our community. CCUA executive director Billy Polansky joined host Fred Parry in-studio Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle's “CEO Roundtable” program. Mr. Polansky tells listeners that the CCUA aims to connect people with agriculture and their food. The CCUA also helps get young people interested in farming and it grows food for the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri. Mr. Polansky updated listeners on the status of the welcome center at the Agriculture Park, saying the lowest of four bids was about $4.7 million. “It's an 11,000 square foot building. It's going to have office space, a commercial kitchen, event space and a resource library as well,” Mr. Polansky tells listeners. He notes that when people go to the park, they're unsure if they can even be there, saying this will be a “front door” for the park. People will be able to take a tour by going into the welcome center, and they'll also be able to sign up for CCUA programs. Mr. Polansky also updated listeners Saturday on the “food as medicine” and produce prescription programs. The ten-acre Columbia agriculture park is open year-round for you to enjoy. Northeast Missouri, including Audrain and Randolph counties in the 939 the Eagle listening area, have been hard hit by winter storms, wind chill warnings and Monday's ice storm. January has been a very tough month in the region, and many schools have been forced to take a number of snow days. Missouri Senate Majority Leader Cindy O'Laughlin (R-Shelbina) joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri," telling listeners that state Department of Transportation (MoDOT) crews at northeast Missouri sheds have been pulled away to help St. Louis and Kansas City offices during snowstorms. She says while those offices have staffing issues, her constituents in rural Missouri deserve to have their highways plowed in snow. Senator O'Laughlin also discussed her frustration with the Missouri Senate Freedom Caucus, which she calls the "Chaos Caucus." Leader O'Laughlin says that caucus doesn't meet with the Senate Republican caucus in Jefferson City. While the GOP has a 24-10 supermajority in the Missouri Senate, Republican infighting has hampered the ability of them to pass priority legislation. Senator O'Laughlin tells listeners that her caucus has filed 12 initiative petition bills, 20 school reform bills and 31 tax reform bills. She also hopes to hear Missouri Governor Mike Parson highlight some of those issues during tomorrow's State of the State address:

With Thanksgiving less than a week away, the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri says more people than ever before are struggling. Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri president Lindsay Lopez says everything costs more today, adding that hunger is real and is prevalent in our community. She joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri", telling listeners that anyone struggling who needs food should visit their new food bank market on Columbia's Business Loop, which opened November 1. It's near Firestone. Ms. Lopez says the food bank market served 350 families on opening day:

“The marketing that you're doing is going to induce so much other giving. Lane Carter is going into his fourth year of the FFA, but just his sophomore year of high school in a couple of weeks.  He began his FFA journey in the 7th Grade with a vision of farming, full time after high school ever since. Lane already has a great vision of what it is going to take.  He has already started a side business, doing custom bailing for customers in his area of Northeast Missouri.  He is trading labor on his families farm for the use of the equipment he needs to operate this business.  He also has identified other side hustles that he could pursue to create off-farm income when the time comes, such as selling seed. Lane is not waiting around though.  He and his brother leased 50 acres and farmed it as partners last year.  This year they are leasing 80.  Lane's goal is to grow every year and to keep growing until all he has to do to survive is farm.  He will take the off-farm job if he needs to, but he is making all the right moves right now to avoid that, or at least to minimize that.

Meagan has an impressive background growing up in agriculture and pursuing a degree in Soil Science from the University of Missouri. This set her up to join her family's soil laboratory business, Perry Agricultural Laboratory which has been around for forty years based in Northeast Missouri. She is now a soil scientist and the chief operating officer for that business, and at the same time she farms with her husband, Mark, on the other side of the state in northwest Missouri. We will certainly talk about soil and about farming in today's episode, but she's here in another capacity, as the chair of the United Soybean Board, where she leads a group of 77 farmers who share one goal: to increase return on investment for US soybean farmers. It was a treat to talk to Meagan about the role of the soy checkoff and some of their many approaches to creating value for farmers: from infrastructure to biofuels to health and nutrition to innovation and technology.

Thrasher Family Farms, is a first generation farm with a passionate young owner with a love for Farming. We learn about the Farm purchase in 2016 and the converting of the old Dairy operation to a more modern Swine facility. We discuss his niche company/growth since that time and how Cambre's previous experience with Cargill/JBS helped prepare him. We discuss in depth about opportunities and challenges for small family farms , and how he is living his dream. We touch on some hot topics (Prop 12, and Better Tasting Pork), and Cambre ends with his final thoughts on what the Pork Industry needs to know. About our Guest Cambre has been involved with raising pigs since he was a young boy. Growing up on a small farm in Northeast Missouri, Cambre spent many hours helping in the large sow unit his dad managed nearby. Later, Cambre started his own small sow herd while in high school. After graduating, Cambre enrolled in College of the Ozarks where he worked on the school's hog farm to pay his tuition. In 2007, Cambre met his wife Chelsea who also worked at the college's hog farm. After graduating, they got married and Cambre began his career as a field representative for Cargill Pork where he was able to expand his experience in the pork industry. In 2017, God provided an opportunity for Cambre and Chelsea to buy a farm and start their own hog operation. Cambre and Chelsea currently have 350 sows on their farrow to wean farm in southwest Missouri. Selling pigs through a niche company has provided a marketing channel and allowed Cambre to enter the agriculture industry as a producer. They are grateful to be doing what they love and blessed to be raising their four kids on a farm.

Dr. Brad MacLaughlin is a retired superintendent of schools who loves to identify and foster innovative approaches to education. We’ve all been there- wanting to start sharing our story but having absolutely no clue where to begin. This week, we’ll meet Kylie Epperson of Epperson Family Farms! Kylie, also known as The Grateful Farm Wife, is a proud 20-something Northeast Missouri farmer, raising row crops, pigs and kids (2) with her 4th generation farmer husband, Jordan. Coming from the education field, her role on the farm stretches from raising kids, to parts runner, to office bookkeeper, to financial manager and more. Kylie is the co-host of the Midwest Farm Wives Podcast. Following a fire in their hog barn, Kylie found her voice in agriculture and has been sharing her farm story both on social media and in person on a regular basis. Be sure to join us as Kylie shares her story of how she got started sharing her passion and how she’s developed a following of 10,000 people! Coach Collins Talks Jaryt Hunziker Coach Hunziker is the Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach at Boonville High School in Boonville, Missouri. He coached both Clark County (boys) and Scotland County (girls/boys) in Northeast Missouri. While coaching the Scotland county girls they played for 3 District Titles winning one in 2011. He just concluded his 7th season of coaching the Boonville Lady Pirates where his team ended the 2018-19 season at 21-4. Over the last 7 seasons they have won 5 Conference Championships, 4 District Titles, made 2 Quarterfinal appearances which included a 3rd place finish in Class 3 in 2015 (30-1). Today, I'm joined by the magical human, Mason Aid who is an educator and advocate for diversity and inclusion focusing on the LGBTQ community. They grew up on a small farm in rural Northeast Missouri and now live in the teeming metropolis of Columbia, Missouri.  They got their start working with LGBTQ teens and found their passion through this work. Seeing the experiences of these amazing youth had a profound impact on Mason, and through their volunteer work they found opportunities training educators and social service providers. They have since grown those opportunities into the Aided podcast and are creating a movement to help equip others to be a safe person for youth who are coming out. Mason loves spending time with their wife and toddler, going on walks, cooking good food, and pretending to be a pretentious coffee snob. One of their biggest life goals is to hike the Ozark Trail across Missouri. Coach Hunziker a 1996 graduate from Clark County (Kahoka, MO) which is where he gained his love for basketball playing for his father Gary in Elementary school followed by great coaches in Kevin Garner and Greg Buescher in High School. During that time Jaryt knew that he wanted to get into Education and coaching following High School. He attended both Southeastern Community College in Iowa (1996-1998) and Culver Stockton College in Canton, MO (1998-2001) where he earned a BS Degree in Education. Following college, he coached at both Clark County (boys) and Scotland County (girls/boys) in Northeast Missouri. While coaching the Scotland County girls they played for 3 District Titles winning one in 2011. He just concluded his 7th season of coaching the Boonville Lady Pirates where his team ended the 2018-19 season at 21-4. Over the last 7 seasons they have won 5 Conference Championships, 4 District Titles, made 2 Quarterfinal appearances which included a 3rd Place finish in Class 3 in 2015 (30-1). On this episode we're in Northeast Missouri at the Sellens cabin on opening day of the Missouri rifle season. We get the full story of Mike's 160"(ish) 7 year old buck, his largest, and oldest, deer to date. We're also joined by Walter Sellens, Tyler's dad. Walter is an extremely accomplished man in all facets of his life, an accomplished outdoorsman being one of them. We discuss the changes Walter has seen in deer hunting over the years, some of his childhood memories of hunting with his father and some of the memories of he and Tyler going hunting together. We also discuss what we've been seeing this last week, where we think the rut may be right now and what our plans are for the upcoming week.
