I'm back out after spending a week at home on 3 x 500mgs of antibiotics each day! Hopefully, this has finally kicked into touch my never end bouts of illness, I'm not 100%, but I feel 80% better than I was on my last trip. I checked in with Ian on Tuesday about the weather and where would be a favorable area. With the wind blowing from the Northerly direction and the lack of sunshine, which would, unfortunately, vanish after the first day. We came up with a fair few options, and with not much coming out over the past few days, it didn't look brilliant. The daylight hours are getting closer to 12 hours, I feel this is the magic moment for the carp, when they really start waking up and getting their heads down.

We've got it all this weekend, ufc, horses, cricket, some juju and a whole lot of swinging. The last group 1 for the year is at Ascot for the Northerly stakes and there has been some serious calculating of units. It all kicks of at 11:30 Saturday and could be all over red rover early on, or we could go into Sunday night. Irish-Dutch Collaboration for Pathfinder Space Mission

SUAS Aerospace, the leading Irish aerospace company based in Cork, and T-Minus Engineering, a Netherlands-based company that develops, produces and launches rocket systems for research, observation and training purposes, have announced a strategic partnership to launch the Pathfinder mission in late 2025. Pathfinder is Ireland's first commercial rocket launch. This groundbreaking endeavour will serve to position Ireland as a key player in the European space industry. Up to now, European orbital rocket launches have primarily been conducted in South America from French Guiana. With the stated EU aim of having sovereignty in space, this Irish launch heralds a truly new era for the European space industry. To execute the Pathfinder mission, T-Minus will provide expertise in solid rocket propulsion, onboard electronics, and launch operations, while SUAS Aerospace will oversee the complex logistics of the launch, including site acquisition, licensing, and stakeholder engagement. T-Minus is the most prolific rocket launch business in Europe. The Pathfinder launch site will be on Ireland's west coast, which is an ideal destination for commercial rocket launches. Offering cost-effectiveness, easy access by sea and air, and a large safety zone over the Atlantic Ocean, the west coast location will establish Ireland's position in the European launch market and encourage state support for space infrastructure to capitalise on this once-in-a-generation opportunity. The project will demonstrate Ireland's geographical advantage and capability for delivering satellites to Northerly and Southerly low earth orbits and focus European awareness on the opportunity for commercial rocket launches from Ireland. T-Minus Engineering brings extensive expertise in the development, production, and launching of rocket systems, providing end-to-end solutions for both the scientific and defence markets. With capabilities in solid rocket propulsion, onboard electronics and telemetry, lightweight materials, and safety simulations, T-Minus Engineering has a proven track record, having launched various rockets from locations across the globe, including Australia, Scandinavia, and the UK. Rory Fitzpatrick, CEO of SUAS Aerospace, said: "The Pathfinder mission is a significant milestone for Ireland's space program. It will not only demonstrate the country's technical capabilities but also contribute to economic growth and job creation. By partnering with T-Minus, we are ensuring that the launch meets the highest safety standards and regulatory requirements, paving the way for future space activities. "Having collaborated on a project previously with T-Minus Engineering, they are the obvious choice for the Pathfinder mission, having conducted multiple suborbital launches within Europe and worldwide," he said. Hein Olthof, CEO of T-Minus Engineering, said: "As T-Minus seeks new opportunities outside the Netherlands due to space restrictions, the Pathfinder project presents a unique solution and will support our further expansion across Europe. We believe this partnership will open up new opportunities for our customers, and we are confident that our collaboration with SUAS Aerospace will lead to innovative and successful projects, fuelling the growth of Europe's space capabilities. Ireland can be a centre of this growth." "The establishment of new launch sites, such as Ireland, will encourage harmonization of launch operations within Europe, mainly in regulations, which in the end leads to better and more efficient legislation. This can give Europe the desired edge in the important field of space access." SUAS Aerospace was founded in 2019 and is supported by Enterprise Ireland. With an initial investment of €1.1 million to date, along with T-Minus Engineering, it has secured significant partnerships with major European Companies, including Skyrora and Pangea Aerospace. It is part of a successful consortium awarded a €5m grant from Horizon Europe to develop inter...

In this episode I continue reading Capt. Joshua Slocum's excellent narrative of his solo circumnavigation of the world in 1895. In Chapters 13 &14 Slocum leaves Samoa, sailing to Australia and then Tasmania.  Australia is an opportunity for Slocum to relax a little- he is on the far side of the world from his starting point in Boston and is once again amongst friends and those who know of his voyage, many of whom are keen to assist him.  He decides at this point to take a Northerly route around Queensland and head to the trade winds blowing West through the Torres Strait rather than going around Cape Leeuwin to the South.  This affords Slocum time to visit a number of ports, raise some much needed funds and enjoy the cruise North through the Great Barrier Reef. I spent the weekend in Wellington and it was fabulous. I went for my son’s 22nd birthday using the tickets I bought for his 21st birthday that I couldn’t use because some sort of virus was floating around. I arrived on Friday and had a good shop and a great dinner at Havana where the octopus and the gnocchi are to die for. Saturday was a blinder of a day.  The clearest blue with a steady Northerly.  You wonder why they don’t have the America’s Cup in the capital if you’ve got a problem with wind. People were buzzing around doing stuff as only Wellington can on a sunny Sunday.  Maybe it’s the promise of beautiful weather, or the fact that so many public servants are let out of the state architect designed concrete prison cells to do what they want, but Wellington crackles on a Saturday morning the way few places do. We enjoyed the waterfront, went to Makara, had fish and chips on the South Coast as the sun went down behind the South Island. And I thought to myself, who said Wellington was dying? Who said it had lost it’s mojo?  That’d be John Key and our own Heather Du Plessis Allen just a few weeks ago and a host of other commentators. No, Wellington is exactly the same as it’s always been.  And that’s it’s problem. I lived in Wellington in the mid-eighties.  The motorway and roading system is virtually unchanged. The water infrastructure unchanged. Yet the population has grown.  The city is penned in by hills and so to cope the buildings have gone up. But the base the city is built on is 100 years old.  It’s right there on the Mount Vic tunnel.  Built in 1931 with plans for 2 more lanes in a sister tunnel.  90 years later nothing. The problem is not this bunch of local politicians, or the previous bunch or the bunch before that. The problem is the model which is why nearly every city and town in New Zealand face the same fate as our failing cities. I was reminded of that when commissioners in Tauranga took a look at the books and wondered how on earth you run a city on this and promptly suggested a 22 per cent rate rise. For generations out cities bodies have been funded by a tax on households, while central government taxes individuals. That means the local bodies are woefully underfunded compared to central government. For example the average Auckland rates bill for 2020, according to the Taxpayers Union last December, was just under $3500. But in my household we have three taxpayers living in the household paying nearly 30 times that in tax. We give councils a pittance to deal with our roads, our water, our rubbish, and our excrement - the most important things needed to survive - while Central government gets a fortune to pay for our teachers, doctors, cops, soldiers and bureaucrats. We choose our local leaders based on who will cost us the least by promising the smallest rate increases.  It’s self-fulfilling .As long as we give them peanuts, and we elect monkeys, our cities and towns will continue to be circuses. Enjoy the show.

Hard to believe it’s coming up 13 years since Greg Childs brought down the curtain on a career that brought him a special place among the top riders of his generation. He begins by outlining his current role as a manufacturer and distributor of equine safety vests. Greg takes us back to his apprenticeship at Hawera on the North Island, and pays tribute to the first top horse he got to ride. He also makes mention of another “gun” apprentice who was rising rapidly through the ranks. He talks of his first trip overseas at the invitation of an American friend. He rode 7 winners in a short time and competed on some iconic race tracks. Greg recalls his very first trip to Melbourne with trainers Ray Verner and Peter Hurdle. He ran third in the 1990 Melbourne Cup which really whetted his appetite for Australian racing. The former champion jockey reminisces about the horses and horsemen who got him started in a new country. It was a three months trial period. He never returned to NZ. Greg talks of a Hong Kong win on the top mare Romanee Conti, and his first Melbourne premiership win- a performance that earned him a special accolade. He looks back on Group 1 wins on the talented South Aussie Gold Guru and an exciting straight six win on Final Card to give young Anthony Cummings his first success at the elite level. Admirers of a good horse will hang on every word as Greg remembers his fantastic journey with Sunline, and his unbeaten winning streak on Northerly. He talks of his twin children Tayla and Jordan who’ve made flying starts to their riding careers. Greg gives us an insight into those special occasions when he offers advice to the kids.

FOA 200: Drones for Spraying, Seeding, and Pollinating with Rantizo

We made it to episode 200! Drones have become a sort of symbol for modern ag technology whether over-hyped or legitimate. Michael Ott, CEO of Rantizo, proves that there is little room to be a drone skeptic anymore. Rantizo uses drones with a ten foot boom sprayer to spray, seed and sometimes even pollinate crops. Their main customers are retailers interested in expanding their territory by virtue of ease of application and mobility of equipment.   “We can get into fields where nobody else can….We’re doing a demo tomorrow, it’s going to be super sloppy and muddy. That’s totally fine. We can get out and apply in those situations.” - Michael Ott   The inputs carried by the drone are tailored to keep its weight below 55 pounds. At this weight, Michael says he “can train pretty much anyone to be an operator” through a 2-3 day course. The drone flies itself requiring the operator to only hold the controller rather than actively maneuver the drone. The light weight does result in multiple trips to refill tanks to be able to cover a field. But in this instance that doesn’t serve as a disadvantage. Using this technology enables the farmer to precisely deliver the inputs to specific areas in the field that require them.   “So rather than spray the whole field, we sprayed just a portion of it. So there’s a significant advantage for the farmer, especially because we can dramatically reduce your input costs.” - Michael Ott   Another added benefit is the mechanical air movement of the crops caused by the drone. This slight movement allows the spray to better cover beyond the top of the plants. A coordinated effort with this equipment can keep pace with what most tractors are doing. Does it sound too good to be true yet? Regulatory restrictions represent the biggest obstacle to drone spraying operations. While Rantizo is licensed by the FAA there are individual state requirements that can involve anything as simple as filling out a form to 500 hours of experience. With Rantizo’s operator course they help you find and meet all of the requirements for each state. There is very little these drones can’t do and at a fraction of the cost. This is the future of agriculture.   This Week on The Future of Agriculture Podcast: Meet Michael Ott, CEO of Rantizo Learn about the groundbreaking technique Rantizo is able to achieve with automated drone farming Explore the many benefits in labor costs, chemical costs, equipment costs and long-term weed resistance that can be achieved Discover the barriers to entry to becoming an operator of this technology and how Rantizo can help you navigate them Hear why operators were required to wear a seatbelt when they first became licensed Connect with Rantizo Share this episode and tag @rantizosprays to possibly be selected for a demonstration of the technology at your location! Bondi Beach is one of the world’s most beautiful city beaches. It is graced with clean white sand, turquoise water, perfect sunrises, and a steady swell for surfers. The Northern Headland (aka Ben Buckler) of Bondi Bay consists of weathered sandstone cliffs that drop right down into the surf. But at low tide when the surf isn’t too large, you can walk among the tidal pools and watch the waves steadily pound and surge up onto the flat rocks that jut out into the bay, forming a point just a few hundred meters from where the sand ends. It is such a popular spot that solitude is hard to come by. But I wanted this to be nature soundscape of Bondi as it has sounded for millions of years; that is, no people sounds. In order to avoid the any human-made distractions from the land, sea or air, this recording was taken in the hours well before dawn with low tide occurring at about the half way point in the recording. The recording is so close to the water that you can sometimes hear the waves surge across the flat rocks and splash just inches away from the microphone. The mind searches for patterns and meaning everywhere. The chaotic syncopation of a steady surf breaking across the flat rocks of the Bondi headland eludes pattern. And in that elusiveness lies the beauty: nature at its enigmatic yet and perfect best. You can almost hear the creative and destructive forces in the sounds.A steady Northerly was blowing, bringing with it unseasonably warm weather this late in autumn. The cliffs of Ben Buckler Headland protected the tidal area from the wind and allowed for an intimate recording virtually at the level of the water just near where the famous Big Rock or Mermaid Rock sits. If you are after the steady roar of waves crashing and the rumble of a distant wind punctuated with the gentle murmur and gurgle of tidal pools filling and draining in the occasional lull, this recording is for you. This paper focuses on the loyalist community in Cavan and Monaghan from the signing of the Ulster Covenant through to the establishment of the Irish Free State and the Civil War. In particular, it focuses on the awkward questions of identity faced by the community after the partition of Ireland in 1921 (and by the growing likelihood of this event in the years previous). Cavan and Monaghan, along with Donegal, represented the three Ulster counties with the lowest Protestant populations. Cavan and Monaghan existed on the edges of Ulster itself with loyalist social networks overlapping with the distinctly non-Ulster counties of Meath, Louth, Longford and Leitrim. Despite this, these counties claimed to profess as strong an “Ulster Unionist” identity as their more Northerly neighbours. This was supported in 1912 with their enthusiastic support for the Ulster Covenant. In signing this the Cavan and Monaghan Unionists effectively sundered their own political future from that of their southern coreligionists. However, the three counties were to be similarly cast adrift from the North just a few years later when the Ulster Unionist Council accepted the principle of six county partition. This represented a severe identity crisis for the Unionists of Cavan and Monaghan. This paper examines both how prevalent an “Ulster” identity can be said to be in these two counties before then moving on to explore the ways in which this community successfully and unsuccessfully recast themselves as southern Unionists. In doing so it touches on important questions such as what it the idea of Ulster and an Ulster identity actually mean, how intertwined Southern and Ulster Unionism were in the border region and how the new Northern state functioned as a cultural symbol for southern loyalists. Daniel Purcell is a 3rd year PhD candidate in the History Department of Trinity College, supervised by David Fitzpatrick and Anne Dolan. He completed his undergraduate degree in Somerville College Oxford before returning to Trinity College for his MPhil and PhD. His research focuses on Southern Irish Protestantism in the Irish Revolution. Specifically, he is interested in the Irish border region and how the narrative and understanding of the Revolution is impacted by the overlap of different identities (Protestant, loyalist, Ulsterman) within the community. He has been published in the Breifne Historical Journal and Irish Lives Remembered.

Santa Claus failed to deliver the much awaited, highly anticipated Xbox One S to the Navagero boys this year. Next Christmas is too far away, so with a strong Northerly blowing and the temperature hitting a staggering 37 degrees, they decided to take the matter into their own hands. This is their story... The Met Office recently issued a report which states that the growing season in the UK is now one month longer than it was in the 1960's. Keen gardeners may notice that spring bulbs are coming up much earlier and that fruit like apples are flowering sooner in the year whilst some farmers can now bring in their harvest before the end of the summer. Peter Gibbs discovers that whilst there are opportunities for growers in more Northerly latitudes rapid changes globally may put yields of vital crops at risk. The UK's gardeners, crop scientists and farmers are not simply sitting back and admitting defeat though. A changing climate is a challenge which many growers are busy preparing for. In celebration of the 40th Toronto International Film Festival, second only to Cannes, and known for launching Oscar hopefuls, we're discovering there's plenty to love about Canada. Canadians are much like us, many of them with similar accents, so we don't notice when they show up in our favorite TV shows or movies. Cable programming is full of Canadian-produced television shows, and musicians and comedians become some of our favorites, without our even realizing it. So let's point out how much they bring to our lives in the good ol' US of A, and the world at-large, and share some love for our neighbors to the north! Plus, team member Michele Coles will join us to share her observations from her up-close-and-personal trip to the Great White North!

My guest for this episode is Stephen Barstow, author of Around the World in 80 Plants. Today we talk about his incredibly diverse garden in Norway where he grows over 2,000 edible plants in a rather small space. We begin with his background and how he came to have an interest in edibles, from his beginnings as a foraging vegetarian, through to his beginning to eat and collect plants from wherever he traveled. He shares with us his love of edible ornamentals, or what Stephen calls edimentals, and he also recommends some to start with when first beginning to introduce more of these species into your garden. One of my favorites, not mentioned in the interview proper, are nasturtiums. What's incredible to me is that Stephen is growing so many different varieties on such a small amount of space, which echoes what I learned from Holly Brown, and yet he's doing it in a northerly climate. Less than a quarter acre, or 1/10th of a hectare, and he has over 2,000 different plants. At 64 degrees North latitude. I knew that was fairly far up, but didn't have a real understanding until I compared it to other cities and saw that this is the same latitude as Fairbanks, Alaska. I took this a step further and checked the Koppen-Geiger climate classification and confirmed that where Stephen is corresponds with other Northerly latitudes, yet he's growing all these plants. It's just amazing. I'm including the copy of this book, which I received from Chelsea Green, in the Traveling Permaculture Library project. If you haven't joined that cycle of giving yet, email your name and address to Matt Winters, who is the new librarian for the project. You can reach him at: librarian@thepermaculturepodcast.com Regardless of where you live, you can grow some of your own food. You can design for your space, your climate, and take steps towards self sufficiency and creating a better world, whatever that may mean to you. You can move a few dollars from one system and into the systems you want to intentionally support. If at any point along the way I can help you, get in touch. or Email: The Permaculture Podcast. I'm also continuing to look for opportunities to take the show on the road and to record more live in-person interviews. Use that phone number or email address to get in touch if you would like to host or have someone in mind to get in touch with. Finally, a few announcements before drawing this episode to a close. This show, as I mention in the introduction to each show, is completely listener supported. So I need your help to keep the show on the air. The best way to do that right now is through recurring contributions with Patreon. You can find out more about that, as well as where I'm at and what my goals are, at Patreon.com/permaculturepodcast. If you are not in a place to give, that's fine. I'll keep on keeping on as long as I can, and you can always lend a hand by sharing links with your friends. Retweet or reply to tweets on twitter, where I am @permaculturecst, or join in the conversations on facebook. Facebook.com/thepermaculturepodcast. From here, I have a class announcement for my friends and colleagues Wilson Alvarez and Ben Weiss. They're running a Permaculture Design Course in Harrisburg Pennsylvania beginning in April 25 and running on weekends through October. Search for Downtown Harrisburg Permaculture Course on Facebook to find more information on the events page, or follow the link in the show notes. Coming up for the podcast I have interviews with “Wildman” Steve Brill on foraging, Peter Michael Bauer on Rewilding, and I'll be sitting down with Jen Mendez, of PermieKids.com, to record a two part interview. I'll interview her for the first half, which will appear on this show, and then she is going to interview me for the second half the will appear on her podcast. It should be fun. I'm also looking to go back through the archives and re-release some more “Best Of….” episodes with new introductions and endings to share some of the more popular guests in new ways. That about covers it for now. Until the next time, spend each day creating a better world, the world you want to live in, but taking care of earth, your self, and each other.
