Secrets of the Soil Podcast with Regen Ray

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 13, 2022 38:40

The catastrophic consequences of global climate change have gone on way too far. Meanwhile, the demand for carbon is on the rise, and it's a market that's predicted to grow There is no sign of slowing down, and if continues to be credited a number of new grant programs could benefit farmers all over the country. Proper soil carbon management can not only retain more water, but can also restore the landscape, increase your yield, and give you access to necessary resources. Let's dig deeper into this as Louisa Kiely shares with us everything we need to know about carbon farming.   Who is Louisa Kiely? Louisa, Director of  Carbon Farmers of Australia, obtained her Bachelor of Agricultural Economics from the University of New England. She worked in the market research industry as a field supervisor while bringing up her 3 children. Together with her husband Michael, in 1991-2003 Louisa established and grew a city-based marketing agency from zero to 55 employees. In this business, she was Director and General Manager of Boomerang! Integrated Marketing & Advertising. Intent on following her first choice of career, she studied for the Advanced Diploma of Farm Management at Sydney University (Orange), trained in Holistic Management, and from 1998 to 2017 she was a woolgrower in the Wellington NSW district, growing fine Merino Wool. She was selected by the Central Western Catchment Management Authority as one of 10 highly innovative landholders in the Catchment, to be trained in farm planning and soil restoration. Through this training, she and Michael became convinced that soil carbon could solve many agricultural, environmental, and climate change problems. She co-founded the Carbon Coalition Against Global Warming in February 2006 to lobby for the right of Australian landholders to trade on the emissions offset market the credits they can earn by sequestering carbon in their soils. She has since traveled throughout Australia and internationally meeting scientists and farmers and spreading the word about Carbon Farming. She was invited to be a delegate at a Climate Change and Conservation Farming Conference in LaFayette, Indiana, organised by the UN Food & Agriculture Organisation. She was also a delegate at the National Carbon Offset Coalition Conference in Bozeman, Montana. She is co-founder of Carbon Farmers of Australia Pty Ltd (CFA). CFA also published the world's first Carbon Farming Handbook. Seeking to build bridges with the scientific community, she organised two Soil C Summits between Scientists and Farmers, in Dubbo and Orange NSW. And as co-founder of CFA, she organised and ran the world's first Carbon Farming Conference & Expo in November 2007. In 2019 the 9th National Carbon Farming Conference & Expo, the biggest yet with delegates from every state in Australia and from all over the world, was held. She developed the “CarbonCredited™” brand for wool and recruited woolgrowers into this emissions reduction program. Louisa has been recognized for her work and was chosen as runner up in the 2008 NSW Rural Woman of the Year. She has also sat on the board of the Regional Development Australia Committee – Orana Region. This intergovernmental committee was set up to ensure the future strength and development in rural and regional Australia. As director of Carbon Farmers of Australia Pty Ltd, she was a part of a consortium of 3 companies that developed the first Soil Carbon Methodology submitted to the Carbon Farming Initiative process. Carbon Farmers of Australia also offers farm-ready training in Carbon Farming and Trading. ---------- Website: https://carbonfarmersofaustralia.com.au/   Dig Deeper Club: https://soillearningcenter.com/digdeeper See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We introduce a hard working Queensland jockey who more than holds his own in the fiercely competitive Brisbane riding ranks. Michael reflects on a milestone win at a recent Gold Coast meeting- his 700th since his riding career began under amazing circumstances. Michael acknowledges the emergence of young trainer Indiana Turner who was in the winner's circle for the first time. The jockey says he had no idea about his upcoming career milestone until he heard other jockeys talking about a new on line service.   He says the Queensland riding ranks are as strong as they've been in years.   Michael takes us back to the day he bought his first car in Wollongong. He was attracted to some racing photos on the wall in the car dealer's office. He talks of his enrolment in a Racing NSW/Tafe course at Orange NSW. Michael looks back on work experience with Dubbo trainer Peter Nestor and his initial indentureship to Wade and Doreen Slinkard at Hawkesbury. He looks back on subsequent apprenticeships at Orange and Kembla Grange. He says his first day as a professional jockey was a complete disaster. Michael tells the story of his first winning ride. He noticed a jockey hadn't been declared for a horse at a Sapphire Coast meeting. He rang for the ride and a dream came true. The jockey outlines his next move- a “loan out” to Port Macquarie trainer Wayne Wilkes. He looks back on one disastrous ride. The horse won but Michael takes no credit. He remembers the day he met Linda Parker at the Grafton races- a young lady who was destined to become his wife. Michael talks of his next move to Murwillumbah where his future father-in-law Col Parker was training a team of racehorses. The jockey looks back on a Sunshine Coast win for the Parker stable which attracted the attention of trainer Pat Duff. Before he knew it Michael was working for Duff at his Deagon stables. He speaks fondly of his final boss, the late Kelso Wood who he regarded as a master trainer and a great supporter. The thirty four year old talks of his wife Linda and daughter Everly who's coming up seven years of age.  Michael reflects on the thrill of winning a South East Queensland apprentice's premiership in the 2009/2010 season. He acknowledges the support of trainer David Vandyke and his great association with top filly Baccarat Baby. Michael reflects on some talented horses he's been lucky enough to ride in recent years. He explains why he chooses to chase his own rides rather than use the services of a jockey manager. Michael pays tribute to one of his Brisbane role models. It's a nice chat with the jockey whose career was motivated by the photos on the wall at the Oak Flats car dealership.

Who here has been to the MONA in Tasmania? All those ridiculous, amazing pieces of art assaulting the senses and inspiring conversation at every turn. Now replace most of those art pieces with outrageously colourful homewares and you’ve got Jumbled Online - a carefully-curated collection of curious creations for your home brought to you by our guest Pip Brett. From humble beginnings as a tiny store in Orange NSW, Pip grew Jumbled with one rule and one rule only: to only stock things that made her heart sing!  This worked amazingly well for her and much to our enjoyment, she has now shifted her heart-singing strategy to building her house with husband Nick (and sharing the whole thing on social media). Today we get the pleasure of chatting with Pip about her building process from working out what you actually want, finding the right designer and seeing the process through to the end.  Pip shares some great insights into how she is approaching the build, making sure that her home is really well thought through to reflect the things she loves, her family’s needs and be something that they will enjoy long term. Being a lover of colour and design, the aesthetic is hugely important to Pip and let’s face it, it’s important to most of us, right?  Even if you’re not naturally gifted to style a room yourself, most of us desire a space that flows well, is clean and makes you feel at home.  This can create some tension with a builder focussed on practicality and who might not always see the importance of hiding the “ugly stuff”. Building a home is such a personal thing.  So why not really go out there and let your build reflect who you are?  Not just choosing from the 3 colour swatches shoved under your nose, or picking your least-hated design from a catalogue, but jumbling up the norm, going big and saying “who cares” when met with resistance.  This is how we create moments in our home rather than spaces in a house.

Your mental health can be impacted by so many things including an addiction to drugs and alcohol, and treatment isn't always straight forward as mental health workers weigh up what to treat first: the addiction or mental health. In a part of our society still so full of stigma and stereotype what do you need to know about substance abuse, mental health and the treatment options available to you and your loved ones? This is what we discuss in this episode.
