Solo a veces. También bajo los kilómetros de vías de tren que solo disponen de viaje de ida. Doctor Zhivago. B. Pasternak La insoportable levedad del ser. M. Kundera

Embark on a journey through the realms of love, passion, and reclusive mystery in the latest episode of our podcast. Kristin Scott Thomas and Lily James lead the cast in Penelope Skinner's searingly funny and passionate new play, Lyonesse, directed by Ian Rickson. Join Elaine, a talented but reclusive actress, as she summons Kate, a young film executive, to her remote Cornish home, unravelling a story that remained hidden for 30 years. Experience the magic of Matthew Bourne's dance production of Edward Scissorhands, a tale that has captured hearts worldwide since its premiere in 2005. Based on Tim Burton's classic movie, this production, featuring the enchanting music of Danny Elfman and Terry Davies, weaves a bittersweet story of an incomplete boy navigating a strange new world. Journey back to communist-controlled Poland in Cold War at Almeida Theatre, a tender and tragic love story brilliantly translated to the stage by Conor McPherson. Adapted from Paweł Pawlikowski's Academy Award-nominated film, the play spans decades and the divided breadth of Europe. With traditional Polish songs, stirring choral arrangements, and music from Grammy Award-winner Elvis Costello, witness a doomed love story brilliantly told, featuring lead performances to die for from Anya Chalotra and Luke Thallon. Explore the intense and oppressive world of House of Bernarda Alba at the National Theatre, where disobedience is no longer tolerated. Harriet Walter plays the formidable matriarch, navigating the consequences of oppressing women in this pitch-black drama. Directed by Rebecca Frecknall, this radical adaptation by Alice Birch of Federico García Lorca's modern masterpiece promises a gripping exploration of family, desire, and the boundaries of societal expectations. Tune in for an episode filled with theatrical brilliance, featuring stellar performances, poignant stories, and the transformative power of stagecraft. It's a journey through time, emotions, and the human experience you won't want to miss.

Evgenia and I talk about TraumaZone, Adam Curtis' latest doc series. It's about seven hours long and tries to tell the story of the twin destructions that took place in Russia: the destruction of communism and the destruction of democracy.Despite a lot of simplifications and its Anglo-Saxon misery porn fetish, Evgenia thinks it's a valuable historical document and it could only have been made by an outsider, precisely because of how traumatic that decade was for ex-Soviets. Even today few people there want to think about happened, let alone alone to dig into the archives and construct a clear narrative about those times. The entire population suffers from PTSD.—Yasha LevineA couple of notes.Evgenia mentions a documentary that Paweł Pawlikowski made about Vladimir Zhirinovsky. She wrote about the film a while back — check it out. Evgenia also mentions a couple of documentaries by Johnson & Johnson heir Jamie Johnson: Born Rich and the The One Percent. As Evgenia says, they stand out because documentaries are as a general rule made by the rich about the poor. But Johnson, fresh out college, made a couple of docs about his own oligarchic class — his family and friends, even Ivanka Trump is in there — and that's very unusual. This is a public episode. Welcome to Episode 4 of Scripted by Paradox House... This week we spend some quality time with award-winning writer, Rebecca Lenkiewicz. Listen in as Daisy goes deeper into the process of writing for film, tv and theatre where golden knowledge lies. You're in for a treat. Rebecca Lenkiewicz is a British playwright and screenwriter. She is best known as the author of Her Naked Skin (2008), which was the first original play written by a living female playwright to be performed on the Olivier stage of the Royal National Theatre. Several of Rebecca's plays have been published individually, and in 2013 Faber & Faber published a collection. Rebecca wrote on Secret Diary of a Call Girl for television. She co-wrote the Polish-language film Ida (2013) with Paweł Pawlikowski, its director. The film is set in Poland in the 1960s and is the story of what happens when a novitiate nun first learns that she is an orphan of Jewish parenthood. The first version of the screenplay was written in English by Lenkiewicz and Pawlikowski, when it had the working title Sister of Mercy. Pawlikowski then translated the screenplay into Polish and revised it. The screenplay for Ida won the European Screenwriter category at the 27th European Film Awards in 2014,[29] and the Oscar for Best Foreign Film at the ceremony on 22 February 2015. She co-wrote, with director Sebastian Leilo, the script for the adaptation of Disobedience in 2017. She and collaborators Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer wrote the screenplay for Colette in 2018. More recently for TV, Rebecca was the lead writer for Steve McQueen's hard-hitting series, Small Axe (2020), which is based on the real-life experiences of London's West Indian community and is set between 1969 and 1982. Enjoy!

Four years ago, director Paweł Pawlikowski won the best foreign language Oscar for his film 'Ida.' His new movie is 'Cold War,' a black-and-white period film based on the tumultuous marriage of his Polish parents that has him in the awards race again. He tells us about making 'Cold War,' getting encouragement from his friend Alfonso Cuaron, and gives the backstory of that memorable Oscar speech from 2015.

Eavesdropping at the Movies

Cold War is Paweł Pawlikowski's follow up to the Academy Award winning Ida. We delighted in the Midlands Arts Centre’s fabulous projection system, which Mike says makes these beautifully lit and composed images "sing", allowing their poetry to resonate. The film is unashamedly a love story, framed in a 4:3 ratio that best frames faces and sharpens the focus on the feelings they express, in glistening black and white. Cold War begins unusually in that the love each of the protagonists has for the other is never in doubt. The problem, the threat, the barrier, is how the geopolitics of the post-war period interrupt that love - the whole world is against them! We discuss the resonances of the film’s setting, the period 1949-1964, and the significance of the film moving back and forth from Paris and several Eastern Bloc countries; with settings in the Polish countryside, Warsaw, Berlin Yugoslavia, Zagreb and then back to Poland. Is part of the theme that in the Eastern Bloc they’re forced to prostitute their art whilst capitalist countries encourage the prostitution of the self? José swoons over the sadness, sexiness and romance of the film. Mike draws attention to a certain sketchiness and notes that Tomasz Kot looks like he belongs in a Stella Artois ad whilst admiring his performance and that of Joanna Kulig as Zula. José loves it so much he wants to see it again to further explore the patterning of images and sounds. Mike feels he’s seen enough but is willing to go along, particularly since the film is unexpectedly short at only 85 minutes. It's certainly good, but precisely how good is Cold War is the question that overhangs the podcast. Recorded on 16th September 2018.
