He was born in Wichita, Kansas, served in the U.S.A.F. and he received his undergraduate education at William & Mary, his masters from Indiana University, and his doctorate from Georgetown University. Quote of the Week "I've led four very big, very different institutions and like all of them I always saw where places where CIA could be better. But I always loved the place, and I always was proud to work there and proud of the people that I knew…they were probably the smartest, most honest people I've ever met and worked with." – Robert Gates. Industry Night with Nycci Nellis

Hey All! Thanks for joining me again on Industry Night with me — Nycci Nellis. It is patio season in DC and I am so so excited because this month's show is being tapped at Tony & Joe's right down on the water in Georgetown. If you live in the DMV or have ever visited this city chances are you've been here. They have one of the best patios. It looks out on the Potomac with views of the Kennedy Center. Seriously on a gorgeous day you want to sit out on that patio with a tray of fresh shucked oysters and a glass of Rose and watch the boats go by. So special thanks as always to Greg Casten and his whole team for always being such a tremendous supporter of me, this show and the work that I do. Today, I'll be chatting with you. Hugo Mogollon is the Executive Director of Fresh Farm Markets here in the DMV. Before launching The List in 2003 I was already a Fresh Farm supporter. I would schlep all five kids down to Dupont Circle on Sundays not long after that first market opened in 1997 and we would leave with bags and bags of vegetables, eggs and fruit. Once in the Industry, I became friendly with the FreshFarm founders Bernie Prince and Ann Yonkers. They were some of the first guests on Foodie And the Beast. Over the years FreshFarm Markets have expanded with more than 20 markets and have created incredible outreach programs that bring fresh food to so many people. AND, FreshFarm has launched many businesses in this area as well. Giving makers an opportunity to R&D, grow and create brick & mortars — Call Your Mother, Red Apron and Gordy's Pickles comes to mind. But first a little on where I've been: -I Emceed the Embassy Chefs Challenge and it was amazing -I ate all the things at the Regarding Her Women's History Month Dinner at Centrolina with Tiffany MacIssac, Amy Brandwein, Ellen Yin, Kimberly Prince and Rochelle Cooper -I also judged a pisco competition at Causa — cause that's what I do -And, not food but a lil' culture, took in the Star Power exhibit at the Portrait Gallery. I am a huge George Hurrell fan. As I mentioned, I am a FreshFarm fan and a shopper. In 2019 Hugo Mogollon joined FreshFarm as executive director. Fresfarm merged with Community Foodworks, which Hugo had led for five years, and now FreshFarm is the largest farmers market organization in the Mid-Atlantic. What Freshfarm can now offer as a regional food system is immense as is their reach and impact. I am ready to get all updated, aren't you? Quotes "We help farmers unlock wholesaling potential by skipping minimum orders and pricing sheets, providing a learning opportunity before engaging with larger institutions."- Hugo Mogollon "You can have someone ensure they're not on the phone constantly, as face-to-face interaction holds significant value."- Hugo Mogollon Featured Guest Hugo Mogollon Personal Instagram: Instagram (@hfmogollon) Facebook: Freshfarm Website: Twitter:  FRESHFARM (@freshfarmdc) on X Personal Twitter: Hugo Mogollon (@hugo_mogollon) on X Featuring Nycci Nellis https://www.instagram.com/nyccinellis/ https://www.thelistareyouonit.com/ Powered by Heartcast Media Home - Branded Podcast Agency: Your Trusted Production House Chapters 00:00 - Introduction 05:08 - Cuban Showcase: Varied Guests, Enriching Encounters. 10:27 - Unveiling Fresh Farm's Legacy and Market Dynamics. 11:59 - Uncovering the Remarkable History of a Local Market. 15:32 - Enhancing Fresh Produce Accessibility and Affordability. 18:47 - Balancing SNAP Technology and Direct Farmer Sales. 21:28 - Curating Diverse Offerings at the Farmer's Market and Streamlining Data. 23:49 - Collaborative Leases and Market Support 27:59 - Advancing Food Access for Farmers and Institutions. 31:24 - National Growth of Farmers' Markets: A Boon for Businesses. 33:46 - Advocating Sustainable Agriculture for a Robust Food Ecosystem. 36:51 - Seasonal Fruits and Vegetable Subscriptions for Sustained Freshness. 41:56 - Collaboration Program Empowers Common Grain Alliance Partnerships. 45:35 - First Farm's Distinct Focus on a Holistic Food Ecosystem. 47:09 - Envisioning Innovative Strategies to Enhance Restaurant Food Access. 48:15 - Outro Powered by Heartcastmedia

Plausibly Live! - The Official Podcast of The Dave Bowman Show

At the National Portrait Gallery, where portraits of all the US Presidents (except for two) are on display so that visitors can gaze upon the visage of the nations past leaders, there is a major problem. It turns out that almost none of the men (Only men??? Gasps of outrage!) are actually the good, decent, moral, upstanding characters that we have convinced ourselves that a President must be. Some of them were slave holders. Others attacked Native American Tribes. Others were corrupt and some were flat out lazy. At least one was called “a slob.” Yes, the portraits that were painted of America’s past leaders have sparked no joy in recent days. And now, the Smithsonian feels that it must find a way to “redefine the context” of these men so as to avoid causing any pearl clutching by visitors, who may not be aware that all people are imperfect. Of course, the BIGGEST problem isn’t the slave holders or the Indian attackers or the corrupt or the lazy or even the unknown (Millard Fillmore). No, the BIGGEST problem of all for the Gallery is that one of the two portraits yet to be displayed (or even painted) is of… well… you know who…

Kon Karapanagiotidis OAM is the CEO and founder of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. Kon is proudly Greek, growing up in a working class family in a small country town in Victoria. Kon’s personal experience of racism and witnessing the exploitation of his parents in factories, as well as his grandparents’ experience as refugees who fled the Pontian genocide in Anatolia, planted the seeds for his passion for human rights.Inspired by the struggles of his parents and his own childhood experiences of racism, Kon founded the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) at 28. Then a TAFE teacher, Kon discovered that people seeking asylum were living in the community with no basic support. This led to the creation of a student-run and community funded food bank, launched from a tiny shop in Footscray with only a few boxes of food. That same year, the ASRC was established on 8 June, 2001.From humble beginnings, the ASRC today has grown into both a place and a movement. It is largest independent human rights organisation in Australia, and has supported and empowered over 12,000 people seeking asylum and refugees in the last 15 years.Kon has been recognised as an Australian of the Year (Victoria) finalist in 2007, was invited to participate in the 2020 Summit in 2008, was voted one of Australia’s 20 Unsung Heroes as part of the launch of the new Portrait Gallery in Canberra in 2008, and was voted as one of Melbourne’s 100 most influential people in The Age Melbourne Magazine. Kon was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2010 and an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2011. In 2012, he was a finalist for the Australian Human Rights Commission’s prestigious Human Rights Medal. Most recently, he has been awarded the City of Maribyrnong Citizen of the Year 2016 and the La Trobe University Young Achiever Award 2016.Over his lifetime, Kon has completed six degrees including a Bachelor of Law and a Masters of Business Administration. In his spare time, he enjoys cooking, particularly Greek cuisine and often hosts dinners to fundraise for other causes, including women affected by domestic violence. Kon also volunteers his time as a Board member of Children’s Ground, an organisation that suppors Indigenous children and runs a small philanthropic trust that focuses on women and Indigenous rights.

Fourteenth Day, Saturday, April 2nd After a morning glancing at the light rainfall through the coffee shop window as I write up some notes and look up some things in preparation for the day, I begin my day’s explorations with a visit to the National Portrait Gallery. It’s at 8th and F Streets NW, its official address: unusually, it lacks a street number. While I’m here primarily to see all the Douglass portraits I can find and have little time to spare since it’s my last day in D.C., I’ve wanted to visit the Portrait Gallery for a long time, and allow myself an extra hour to explore. After I’ve made my inquiries at the information desk, one of the first portraits that grab my attention as I head towards my first destination is a bust of Louisa May Alcott. As you may remember from my Boston account, she was the only one willing to sit next to Douglass and his second wife Helen Pitts Douglass at Wendell Phillips’ funeral in 1884, just about a month after their marriage...

The Memory Palace is a proud member of Radiotopia from PRX. Do you live in Toronto? Chicago? Milwaukee? Minneapolis? How about L.A.? Come see the Memory Palace live this May. SPOILERS BELOW Music * We hear Portrait Gallery from Luke Howard. * A smidgen of Julia Kent's lovely Dorval. * The incomparable Moondog's Gloving It pops up a couple times (as it tends to do around these parts). * Denmark by the Portland Cello Project rolls out for quite awhile. * John Lewis and Sacha Distel play the title track from their Afternoon in Paris album. * We hear To, from Zach Cooper's Styles Upon Styles. * There's a bit of Eine Kleine Gamelan Music from The Gamelan Son of Lion (seriously). * Ends on P, by Labradford. NOTES * The classic text on Charlie Faust is Lawrence Ritter's The Glory of Their Times:the Story of the Early Days of Baseball as Told by the Men Who Played It, one of the key texts of early baseball history, first published in 1966. * The definitive resource on Faust is Gabriel Schecter, who's written his biography for SABR, the Society for American Baseball Research, and a monograph called Victory Faust: The Rube Who Saved McGraw's Giants. * I also want to point you to Rob Neyer's lovely piece on visiting Faust's grave.
