Most traditional training philosophies and methods for long-distance endurance training have one thing in common, putting high mileage. For recreational runners, this type of training can backfire. Most runners' focus on mileage, ignoring other important aspects such as speed, strength, and mobility. In this episode we discuss the FIRST (The Furman Institute of Running and Scientific Training) training method for runners, which focuses on training with purpose, intensity, and recovery. The FIRST method is described in the book ‘Run Less Run Faster' by Bill Pierce and Scott Murr. The method is designed for recreational runners with full-time jobs, and it emphasizes progressive overload and realistic goals. This episode also discusses the 7-Hour Workout Week training approach, which is designed for runners who want to improve their health and fitness. Bill Pierce In this episode, we talk to Bill Pierce, who is behind the FIRST training methodology. Communicating during and about the Covid-19 pandemic is a topic we've discussed several times on this show, including in our most recent episode. And, as of today, May 11, 2023, the Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus Public Health Emergency is expiring. But just because Covid is "over" doesn't mean we won't still have to discuss it as strategic communicators. And so in this bonus episode, we bring back someone who has been a voice of reassurance and reason throughout this horrible, three-year ordeal. Bill Pierce was a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services in the George W. Bush Administration. https://gofund.me/558e0204 Our friend Jim Phillips needs our help. On January 20th, 2023, Jim went to Anschutz Medical Center in Denver after months of nagging back pain that wouldn't go away. The following morning, he was rushed into emergency surgery after doctors discovered a spinal epidural abscess. As part of the biportal endoscopic spinal procedure, doctors removed part of his spine bone to drain the abscess. The severity was so bad that doctors said he would likely no longer be with us had they waited one more day. Since surgery, Jim has been paralyzed from the middle of his back down. For the past five and a half weeks, Jim has been trying to keep a positive attitude as he undergoes vigorous rehabilitation and adjusts to a new life without the use of his legs. He still has a ways to go on this new journey, and he will remain in the hospital for 3-4 more weeks, followed by in-patient rehab. Jim is known for his passion for writing and sharing his undying love of professional wrestling and its rich history. As a wrestling historian on ProWrestlingStories.com (https://prowrestlingstories.com/author/jim/), Jim has beautifully documented a business he loves by chronicling the wrestling territories while acknowledging many who otherwise don't get the recognition they deserve. A lifetime Cauliflower Alley Club member (which honors and helps people from the wrestling business in a time of need), and an extraordinary chef, Jim has given back to so many over the years. Now, it's our time to give back to him during his time of need. Over the past few days, Jim has had some victories. After weeks of no feeling or movement from the middle of his back down, he has begun to be able to wiggle his left big toe slightly. Wins like this mean a great deal right now. While some people regain feeling in their extremities and use of their legs 6-12 months after this procedure, doctors have told Jim to keep an open mind about the reality of living the rest of his life in a wheelchair. Now Jim is not the type to ask for anything. He's told me at least a few times, "I don't want any handouts!" But desperate times have softened his stance on that. The reality of life outside of the hospital is hitting hard. He will require the installation of an electric stair lift in his home, which will cost $10,000—a cost his Medicaid insurance won't cover. However, he has asked that we set the goal to $5,000 so as not to burden others and because his savings, fortunately, allows him to cover around half of the cost. Jim has been a friend I can call brother for many years. After losing my parents during the pandemic, Jim was on video with me daily. Sometimes, more than that. I can't begin to explain how much his friendship means to me, and I know he's got many brothers and sisters spread out all over the globe who feel the same way. My wish is for us to raise enough money to help my friend reach at least half of the cost of the stair lift. Any further money raised will go directly towards the stair lift and other medical and life expenses. I hope the wrestling community and friends alike can rally together behind Jim to help in any way you can. Any contribution, small or large, means the world to him and supports him on his journey of taking his first steps again. Wishing love and light to you all, especially Jim. He may be down right now, but the ref hasn't even counted to 1 yet! - JP Zarka

With Covid-19 vaccination efforts finally getting underway, communicating properly about this process is critical to saving lives and re-opening the economy. That responsibility extends beyond the traditional bounds of public health communication, according to public health experts, and touches nearly every strategic communicator in the country--and indeed every American citizen. In this episode, we welcome back two past guests to the show. Bill Pierce was formerly a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services in the George W. Bush Administration. Today he’s a crisis communications consultant at APCO Worldwide and an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University. And Dr. Maria Sundaram is an epidemiologist and post-doctoral fellow at IC/ES, the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences in Toronto, and a global authority on Covid-19. These world-class public health communicators are in agreement that how we all communicate about the vaccination process going forward will play a major part in how many lives are saved. We’ll also explore what needs to happen from a StratComm standpoint, the best ways to deal with all the misinformation about vaccines, what went wrong in the last year, and why this could be a turning point in the war on Covid. Because if we do it right this time, communicators could still help save the world.  (Pictured in this week's podcast art: Dusty's hero, his wife, getting her vaccination as a frontline M.D.) Learn more about your ad choices. Communicating with the public during a crisis is as critical as it is difficult. And if it's seemed to you like President Donald Trump has been hitting many of the wrong notes during his daily media briefings, you're not alone. "They threw the plan out, and started to make up a new one, and they didn't need to," says Bill Pierce, who served as a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services during the George W. Bush Administration. "There are some basic fundamentals that they should have adhered to and didn't, unfortunately." In this episode, Pierce taps into his deep expertise in crisis communication and pandemic response planning to critique the federal comms response to the COVID-19 Coronavirus so far--what they've done right and what they've done wrong. Plus, Dr. Maria Sundaram, an epidemiologist at the Emory Rollins School of Public Health, takes calls from listeners to bust some myths about the pandemic which have been circulating on social media. Watch video of Dr. Sundaram's Q&A session here. Special thanks to Daniel Matarazzo for sharing his clever, uplifting Coronavirus musical parodies with the world. Check him out on Twitter or YouTube.

This is a special edition of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers as it is the only recording of the two most famous Marsalis Brothers playing together in the great drummer's band. This was recorded live at the legendary Keystone Korner in San Francisco in January 1982. Bobby Watson. who was Blakey's alto saxophonist had just left and Blakey was looking for a replacement and Wynton suggested his brother Branford and the rest is history. The Marsalis Brothers are working with tenor saxophonist Bill Pierce on the front line. Donald Brown is on piano, Charles Fambrough is on bass and of course Art Blakey on drums. This is an inspired band and Blakey was proud to have all these "young lions" in the group. The first in this month's series spotlighting drummer/leaders. Art Blakey and His Jazz Messengers.

Russians. They exist. And sometimes, it turns out, some of them aren't the nicest guys. In fact, some of them are up to no good at all! Never has this been more clearly illustrated (well, maybe not never) than in David Cronenberg's 2007 crime drama Eastern Promises. Nick and Chris are joined once again by film critic Bill Pierce to take another look at this morality tale of blood and borscht in the mean streets of London. And, yes, you very briefly see Viggo's balls. Get over it so we can talk about the damn movie.

Of all the things we get questions about, there are two areas that are at the top; Nutrition and Running. Since we have talked a bit about nutrition recently, and will continue to do so, this episode we are going to talk about running, how to get faster, and what to do when the aches and pains hit (especially to us big guys). Both John and Randy had events this past weekend, so there will be discussion about Randy's ride and John's duathlon (and a short rant about the start of the races).
