Some students just seem to "live" in the principal's office. How do we help those students change their behavior and connect with their classmates and teachers? Today, award-winning principal, Andy Jacks, says that he spent most of his younger years in the principal's office. Some reached him and some did not, but it has shaped the discipline practices in his school. Certainly, Andy's "non-negotiables" when it comes to discipline may challenge the status quo in many schools. As you discuss discipline and reaching children, however, he has some important points to help all educators be more empathetic to the student who just can't seem to stay out of trouble. Lee Michaels is very much our concentration point this week. However, with the seasons changing its now a fitting time to play Twain. Very much autumnal in feel, the indie folk outfit are our bookending buccaneers this week. Tobin has expert pedigree in delivering New Music nuggets, so we very much look forward to Twain. Plus we'll learn more about Lee Michaels and his plagiarism battle later on. Tobin once again plays his guessing game music shenanigans with The Marcus King Band. Such a full and mature sounding frontman it's hard to imagine. Quite obviously steeped in blues heritage Marcus King delivers by the bucket load and foxes Richard. New Music this week is curated by Richard as Tobin once again jets around Europe without such a thought for souvenirs or cheap, awful booze reminders. And as such, Richard brings us Chromatics' cover of one of Simon and Garfunkel's most well loved songs. It's eerie, it's cold, haunting and steeped in retrospective vibes. Record Box Classic As Long As I Can See The Light is belted out by John Fogarty, one of the greatest vocalists in rock history. Arguably one of Creedence Clearwater Revival's lesser known hits it remains one of Rock and Roll's finest moments. Join us, especially younger listeners to discover a legendary recording. Rounding all of this off is the Young MC 1989 classic Principal's Office and the song that inspired the samples therein, and the legal battle that ensued. Enter Lee Michaels. Death (or S.F.) Twain Rita Is Gone The Marcus King Band The Sound Of Silence Chromatics Principal's Office Young MC Who Could Want More Lee Michaels Long As I Can See The Light Creedence Clearwater Revival Solar Pilgrim Twain Lee Michaels - just keys and drums, that's all Noted for his powerful and soulful voice Lee Michaels was an unusual act. His choice of Hammond organ accompanied in the main by only a drummer it gained him some notoriety in the Californian music scene in the late 1960s. He sometimes also played piano or guitar. However, it was for his virtuosic and energetic style of Hammond organ playing that he will best be remembered for. the ultimate power organist Sounds Magazine Lee Michaels began his career with The Sentinals, a surf-style band that also contained drummer Johnny Barbata. Barbata later went on to play with The Turtles and later Jefferson Airplane, and Jefferson Starship. Lee Michaels also played as a session musician with Jimi Hendrix. When he left The Sentinals he joined Johny Barbata with the group The Joel Scott Hill Trio, led by guitarist Joel Scott Hill. He later moved to San Francisco and cut his first solo album in 1967 with A&M Records - Carnival of Life. A crucial turning point in this story. His bare bones performances of just a Hammond organ and "Frosty" (Bartholomew Eugene Smith-Frost - strangely sharing the same middle name of Eugene as Lee Michaels) on drums. Frosty's bare handed technique was also unusual and proved to be an inspiration to John Bonham. After cutting his first LP with A&M Records Lee Michaels went mainly unnoticed in the music industry. That is until his fifth LP arrived - entitled 5th. Lee Michaels finally achieved commercial success and recorded another 2 LPs with A&M. Michaels moved to Columbia Records in 1973 but failed to generate a repeat of his success with A&M. Later career By the end of the 1970s Lee Michaels had more or less retired from the music industry. However, several rights usage disputes arose in the early 1990s after A&M granted licenses to Delicious Vinyl for Young MC to use samples from several of Michaels' tracks. After regaining full rights to his music from A&M, Lee Michaels granted licenses to Rhino Records to release several of his LPs over the years. In February 2016 Manifesto Records released his entire A&M recordings on vinyl.

Avery and Mallory interview a very special guest, Geoff Dixon, to talk about his job as an assistant principal and how teachers can avoid sending kids to the office.
Many people go through life truly feeling that God probably is not pleased with them. Sometimes we think of God like we thought of the "Principal's Office" in middle or high school. "God wants me to shape up, get in line, stop my bad habits, or whatever." The truth is that God is for you, not against you. One verse from the Old Testament book of Zephaniah will forever change how you think and feel about God's presence in your life.

Smart Social Podcast: Learn how to shine online with Josh Ochs
Subscribe to our podcast on: iTunes – Google Play – Stitcher Radio – Spotify – Web Player Hire Josh Ochs to speak at your organization. Josh sat down with Mona Merlo, SATO Principal. They discussed things that their school is struggling now with the number of hours kids are spending with social media, what is "just kidding" means to kids and tips for parents when it comes to screen time. Guest info: Mona Merlo, Principal of SATO Academy Key Takeaways: Incidents where students say, “we were just kidding” never end well Too much screen time comes down to a lack of structure of productive activity at home. Kids will say there’s nothing else to do when there are plenty of other things to do Technology is here to stay. Students need to learn how to use technology in a productive and purposeful way What is the number one thing bullies say? “We were just kidding,” is always the number one line that students tell me. What I tell students is that if you start with “just kidding” the situation isn’t going to end well. Especially if the other person is not originally in on the joke. Even if they are in on the joke doesn’t mean they want it publicized to everyone else. What is something parents need to be aware of? Parents should be aware of Instagram “screenshoting”. At our school, students took a screenshot of another student’s Instagram picture but then put a head pose on it. The image was rather inappropriate and made the person look like something they weren’t. Then, the students posted it publicly. It was very hurtful. The student immediately reached out to me with the screenshot. The students both owned up to it immediately and apologized to the other student. They acknowledged their error. That incident started with, “we thought she would think it was funny” but she didn’t. How does social media affect students at school? Students spend a lot of time on social media; even sneaking it during class time. Our students are very much high tech. We’re always on computers or some type of screen. As a school, we provide these tools for our students but they still manage to get into their social media during school. Texting each other even though we do a very good job of trying to keep their phones out of their hands and backpacks. Students will slip their phones into their pockets. They will still slip it out and be texting each other or screenshotting during class. We have seen it on TV where students are recording teachers. That is my number one communication with my teachers: no phones in the classroom. We have the technology we need. It is for your own safety as well as that of the students. What should parents do when their kids go to bed with their phones? It is really hard to get kids to let go of their phones, even while they’re sleeping. My own children, want their phone charging so that they can pick it up in the morning. They use it as the alarm clock. Being able to design a system at home that puts it within the parent’s control and not the kids’ control is really important. Some students will wake up in the middle of the night to go on their phones and text their friends. I have seen parents come in with the bill of the timeframes, where students were texting each other at 2:00 AM. I have parents emailing me, calling me, saying my child was up till 2:00 AM doing homework. My question is what were they doing from 3:00 to 10:00 PM which generally tends to be socializing on social media, online gaming, and the other activities. How can parents get more involved? Monitor the completion of the homework. Keep track of how, when, and where. Homework should be completed out in the open where a parent can see. When not being held accountable, students can say it took them two hours and they’re still not done with their homework. When they were working in their room, they likely had multiple tabs open and spent only a fraction of the time focused on the work. So, put students in a central location when they’re doing homework. You can check in with them frequently to track their progress and monitor the completion of their homework. I think parents would see a direct relation to less time spent on homework, more productive time, and better quality of work. How can parents teach students to balance screen time? I struggle with this myself because I too am a parent of a 12-year-old and a 14-year-old. I think what it comes down to is a lack of structure of productive activity at home. Kids will say there’s nothing else to do when there are plenty of other things to do. Reconnect with your kids. Talk to them. Watch a program together. If they’re watching YouTube videos that they are interested in, put them up on the Smart TV. Watch it with them. There are other means of getting that screen time, being productive, and still meeting the needs of the interests of your children. How can teachers use technology in the classroom? Teachers should be structured with the work and should effectively monitor what the students are doing. We focus on what we’re learning, why we are learning it and how we will show what we have learned. I visited classrooms where it’s extremely well done. It’s very professionally handled, students are 100% productive. I’ve been in classrooms where it’s very loosely structured. Students will be off task on their screens and teachers won’t be monitoring it. It really comes down to us as administrators setting the expectation for technology in the classroom. As our teachers become more and more tech savvy we need to continue supporting that technology is here to stay. Technology needs to be used in a productive and purposeful way. How can schools motivate kids to have productive screen time? One thing we do here at our school is have student outcomes. One of our primary student outcomes is that these students graduate from our school being professional, industry accomplished technician students. This has become our launchpad. Everything a student does from coming to class prepared to work, to how they dress, speak, and work in a collaborative group are their industry soft skills. This is something we promote that students can articulate. Part of this is managing your time, managing your tech, and managing yourself. Be cognizant of what your purpose is as a school and what you want students to leave your school going to college and industry with. How can parents monitor their child’s social media? Be cognizant of what your child is doing. It’s tough to monitor your children’s phones, to see who they are communicating with, and what they are doing. Most kids are ahead of adults when it comes to technology. Students are not afraid to try new things. As parents, our plates are full and our time is limited. Talk to your kids. They will talk to you. They will tell you what’s going on. Anything that’s come to my attention has been brought to me because of students. Whether they were the ones being bullied or they saw it online, they knew they needed to come to me. I think the number one thing parents need to be aware of is the whole SnapChat world. Students believe their Snapchat content disappears once it’s been viewed. If it’s been screenshotted, it will live forever. You have no control over something once you put it out there. You have no control over where it will land, stay, and grow. Be very cognizant of what you are posting online. The Principal's Office Podcast- a podcast dedicated to teaching and accelerating the principals of school leadership. Today we have arrived at Henderson Collegiate, in Henderson North Carolina and have been welcomed into the school by Executive Director and Co-founder of the school, Mr. Eric Sanchez. Eric also serves on North Carolina's Charter School Advisory Board, where a group of school leaders and appointees make recommendations to the State Board of Education on the fate of new public charter school applicants as well as existing schools that have been referred for financial, academic, or compliance issues. This school, Henderson Collegiate, embodies what public charter schools are all about. They started in a trailer on the other side of town with one grade 6 years ago, and grew into a brand new beautiful facility where they are today. As they grew in size, they also grew in ambition, as the have expanded to nearly 600 student in 6 grades, and will continue to grow until 2019 when they will have a full k-12 experience for their families. What also grew through time was their laser like focus on providing support to teachers, and uncompromising expectations for students. During this conversation, Eric walks us through their system that continues to improve every year, which is, I just have to say, mind blowing. The attention to detail, understanding of a unified vision, and refinement of their practices, have produced a unique and special opportunity for their students and families, and it is for that opportunity, that the charter school movement was born.
