Episode: 231 Released on September 16, 2024 Description: NIRO Knowledge and NIRO Crime Analysis creator, Nicholas (Nick) Roy, joins us this week to discuss his unique journey into the analytical and teaching world. From playing around with computers in the 80s, Nick had always had a knack for technology and quick learning. He started his law enforcement career as a police dispatcher where he stayed for 12+ years, and during that same time, worked as a records manager for 10+ years at a neighboring police department. As Nick worked for a smaller agency, he had the opportunity to double-up as their crime analyst, leveraging programs such as Microsoft Access, Excel, and PowerBI to his agency's advantage. Nick credits his success in the law enforcement analysis profession to those within Massachusetts Association of Crime Analysts (MACA) and the further connections he made through the International Association of Crime Analysts (IACA). Nick is currently an IT consultant for Umbral Technologies, and continues to give back to the community through a myriad of training he offers through NIRO Crime Analysis and other establishments.   This episode contains the fan-favorite segment, Don't Be That Analyst. School leadership and middle management (with Chris Dodge and Dr. Chris Jones)

A while back, I heard someone refer to school administrators and other public sector leaders as “middle managers”, and it really hit home for me. As I've transitioned through different roles in my career, I've gotten into the trap of thinking that when I achieve the “next step”, I'll finally have the influence I want. In my experience, telling myself that I'll be satisfied with the level of impact I can make when I reach the “next step” is a recipe for disappointment. In reality, I don't think I'll ever be able to fix all the things I want to fix, and I'm slowly coming to terms with that; learning to pick which battles are worth fighting. As I've talked with others who have transitioned to different administrative roles, this seems to be a common challenge faced by people in middle management positions. That's why I invited Dr. Chris Jones and Chris Dodge to episode 173 of De Facto Leaders to talk about what it's like to be a middle manager in public sector systems like the schools. Chris Dodge has been a lead learner in elementary school settings for ten years and currently the principal at the Thorndyke Road School is Worcester, MA, Chris works to create collaborative structures and systems that bring stakeholder voice into school level decision making, as well as strategies that promote student success and achievement. His schools utilize these systems to promote a vision of serving the whole child, ensuring that students' social-emotional and academic needs are being met. Most notably, in 2014, Christopher led the Dexter Park School in Orange, MA to become a MA Department of Education appointed Innovation School, awarded for its inclusionary practice work. Aside from the role as principal, Christopher has served on DESE's Principal/Teacher Advisory Cabinet, Commissioner Riley's Return to School Teaching and Learning Working Group during COVID19, as well as on the MSAA (Massachusetts School Administrators Association) Executive Board. He has been published in numerous blogs and publications such as “Rogue Leader” and “STOP Series: 100 No Nonsense Things Teachers and Leaders Should Stop Doing”, and is featured in podcasts such as “Seeing to Lead” and “Becoming Principal”. Passionate about supporting and mentoring leaders and educators, Christopher is also a consultant with Seaside Educational Consultants and an adjunct instructor at Assumption University in Worcester, MA.Dr. Chris Jones has been an educator in Massachusetts for 22 years. His experience in the classroom ranged from 8th – 11th grade working in an urban setting. A portion of this was spent opening a high school division for an expanding charter school. He has just finished his 15th year as a building administrator. Chris is also the Vice President of the Massachusetts State Administrators Association (MSAA). True to his “why” of improving the educational experience for as many people as possible, he is currently the Principal of Whitman-Hanson Regional High School in Whitman, Massachusetts. He is the author of SEEing to Lead (https://drcsjones.blog/seeing-to-lead-podcast/), a book that provides strategies for how modern leaders can and must support, engage, and empower their teachers to elevate student success. Chris vlogs weekly about continuous improvement and is also the host of the podcast SEEing to Lead as a way to amplify teachers' voices in an effort to improve education as a whole. His overarching goal is to positively model continuous improvement in all facets of life by being purposeful, acting with integrity, and building character.Chris is passionate about continuous improvement and the idea that success is not a destination, but a process. Chris is a teacher centered principal and his beliefs around the importance of a positive work environment, continuous growth, and a healthy family work-life integration can be seen in the presentations and workshops he has given for the Massachusetts School Administrators Association (MSAA), Massachusetts Computer Using Educators (MassCUE), Massachusetts Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (MASCD), the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP); and his participation in the Better Leaders Better Schools Mastermind group.A finalist for the Massachusetts School Administrators Association's Principal of the Year award and named the 2022 Massachusetts School Counselors Associaltion's (MASCA) Administrator of the Year, Chris is described by his past Superintendent as being “…wholly invested in the success of the school…a creative problem-solver who is able to deliberate yet be decisive, be creative yet accountable…calm and clear-headed even under the most trying of times…has built a strong collaborative and collegial school culture…he is a positive influence on teachers, teaching, and learning.”Chris' education includes a BA from Bridgewater State University, an MA from Salem State University, and a Doctorate from Northeastern University. He currently resides in Southeastern Massachusetts with his wife, Mary (Bella) and two boys, Tommy and Scotty. In this conversation, we talked about questions like:✅What is it like to be a decision-maker who reports to other decision-makers? Are there times when it's been difficult to give staff direction because you were waiting on a decision that was over your head?✅What is the best way for people on the front-line (e.g., teachers, therapists) to provide you with information you can bring to your leadership to help move initiatives along?✅How do you know when to escalate something vs. try to handle it on your own?✅When bringing questions/concerns to leadership, how do you provide enough information that you give adequate context without getting in the weeds and overwhelming them?In this episode, I mention the School of Clinical Leadership, my program that helps related service providers develop a strategic plan for putting executive functioning support in place in collaboration with their school teams. You can learn more about that program here:  https://drkarendudekbrannan.com/clinicalleadershipYou can connect with Chris Dodge on Instagram @principaldodge1 : (https://www.instagram.com/principaldodge1/), on Twitter @PrincipalDodge1 : (https://twitter.com/PrincipalDodge1), and on LinkedIn here:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/chris-dodge-a33343204/You can listen to my previous episode with Chris Dodge here: EP138: Increasing access to instructional programs in rural districts (with Chris Dodge): https://drkarendudekbrannan.com/ep-119-teacher-centered-leadership-with-dr-chris-jones/You can connect with Dr. Chris Jones on LinkedIn here : https://www.li...

Over the summer, Don't Touch My Podcast says, "Don't Touch my Politics" as we sit down with political candidates running for the Worcester City Council and School Committee seats.  About Tracy: Tracy O'Connell Novick is the mother of three children, two Worcester Public Schools alums, one a rising Burncoat High senior; a former Massachusetts public school teacher; a licensed Massachusetts school business administrator; and a longtime education advocate. Professionally, Tracy is in her seventh year as a field director with the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, where she manages social media and focuses on school finance. Tracy is seeking her sixth term on the Worcester School Committee.  During her time on the Worcester School Committee, Tracy spearheaded the Committee's adoption of in-district transportation;  played an active role in the successful search for a new Worcester Public Schools superintendent; has actively reviewed district policy for overdue updates; and has continued to work to direct dollars to the classroom, successfully proposing FY24 funding be moved for a paraprofessional in every kindergarten classroom and an increase in the per-pupil funding for supplies. This continues Tracy's track record of working to get a nurse into every school, to increase facilities funding, and to boost the time and attention on lunch and recess for students. Tracy has continually also been active both on and off the Committee at the state level in advocacy, particularly in equity in school funding. Her online social media is considered the place to keep up with what is happening in Massachusetts education policy by many. Tracy was tireless as an advocate, as a resource, and as an educator in the passage of the Student Opportunity Act, the decades-overdue overhaul of state education funding now bringing billions in state aid to local school districts, and millions to Worcester. Now greeted by "We know: Burncoat" by those at the state level, Tracy continues to press for a new Burncoat High School. Understanding that new high schools only serve some of our students, Tracy also proposed the successful advocacy for the restoration of MSBA Accelerated Repair funding, which has provided millions of dollars in roofs, windows, doors, and boilers to the Worcester Public Schools. She ceaselessly notes that the Worcester Public Schools need and deserve greater capital funding support. While Tracy left the classroom when she had children, she continues to "presume competence," believing that public goods like education are far too important for anyone to be left out, and applies this to discussions of school finance, accountability, curricular standards, and regulations. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/donttouchmypodcast/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/donttouchmypodcast/support

Many people who are involved in K-12 education want to be “student-centered”, but what if that's not the most effective place for leaders to put their efforts?I wanted to discuss this topic with Dr. Chris Jones, who shares why school leaders can create a bigger impact by supporting teachers and those working directly with students. Dr. Chris Jones has been an educator in Massachusetts for 22 years. His experience in the classroom ranged from 8th - 11th grade working in an urban setting. A portion of this was spent opening a high school division for an expanding charter school. He has just finished his 14th year as a building administrator. Chris is also the Vice President of the Massachusetts State Administrators Association (MSAA). True to his "why" of improving the educational experience for as many people as possible, he is currently the Principal of Whitman-Hanson Regional High School in Whitman, Massachusetts. He is the author of SEEing to Lead, a book that provides strategies for how modern leaders can and must support, engage, and empower their teachers to elevate student success. He currently resides in Southeastern Massachusetts with his wife, Mary (Bella) and two boys, Tommy and Scotty. In this episode, we cover a wide range of topics relating to how leaders can better empower their staff, including:✅What it means to be “teacher-centered”, and why being “student-centered” isn't always the most effective way to run a school.✅Are constraints a bad thing? Or can they lead to more creativity? How can school leaders guide their staff without micromanaging them?✅Should school administrators ask for feedback during evaluations? What questions should they be asking to understand how they can empower staff. McGillivray oversaw the course throughout the race earlier in the day, taking runners across the starting line and helping to ensure their safe arrival on Boylston Street. This is McGillivray's 51st consecutive completion of the Boston Marathon and the 36th of which he has completed at night after seeing to his race day duties.   “It doesn't feel so long ago that I was 18 years old, sitting on the curb at mile 21, wondering if I would ever get a chance to finish the Boston Marathon. If I could go back and tell my younger self that he goes on to finish that day and 50 more editions, I can't imagine his reaction,” said McGillivray. “I'm grateful for the more than a dozen friends and colleagues who joined me on the journey to the finish line today. I had to dream big to get to this moment, and I couldn't do it without my community and my family that support me every step of the way.”   The weekend featured two other special moments for McGillivray. On Saturday, Team With A Vision inducted McGillivray into their hall of fame during a dinner at the Westin Copley Place. Team With A Vision pairs blind and sighted runners together to complete endurance races across the country. Their efforts support the Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, which delivers professional, peer, and volunteer support to over 1,200 individuals each year, giving them the support they need to live with dignity and independence. All funds raised support MABVI's statewide vision rehabilitation services, including 34 low-vision support groups, Assistive Technology and Training Centers, and 400 volunteers matched 1:1 with blind individuals.   In addition, McGillivray was a featured speaker during the Boston Marathon Expo, where World Marathon Challenge champion Becca Pizzi interviewed him about his long history with the race. He shared photos, videos and stories with the crowd, and signed copies of his books for attendees at the Dave McGillivray Finish Strong Foundation booth following the presentation.   McGillivray is one of just a handful of runners who have marked half a century or more of completing the world's most famous marathon. Alongside his rich connection to this race, his running resume includes completing the World Marathon Challenge (seven marathons in seven days on seven continents,) nine Ironman Triathlon World Championships, a 1,250-mile run along the U.S. East Coast in 1980 to again benefit the Jimmy Fund, a 24-hour run (120 miles,) a 24-hour bike (385 miles,) and a 24-hour swim (27 miles.) He triathloned around the six New England states by swimming one mile, biking 80 miles and running 20 miles every day for 32 consecutive days. Over the span of his life, he estimates he's run more than 150,000 miles.   For more information on Dave McGillivray, visit www.davemcgillivray.com and follow him on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter.   ABOUT DAVE MCGILLIVRAY   Running legend Dave McGillivray has increased the self-esteem of millions of people through his work as an entrepreneur, philanthropist, motivational speaker, author, and athlete. To start, Lisa explains why guardianships and conservatorships may be necessary for your family. Lisa then talks about what signs may appear when someone is experiencing a decline in their mental health. Finally, Lisa dives into exactly what the process looks like of going through guardianships and conservatorships. Some families can be apprehensive about the process, and there are other options. Tune in as Lisa explains why an incentive trust could be a better alternative to a typical guardianship or conservatorship.      IN THIS EPISODE:    [04:10] Lisa explains why guardianships and conservatorships are needed. Lisa then talks about what signs may appear when someone is experiencing a decline in their mental health.   [09:20] About the process of going through guardianship and conservatorship.   [15:10] How Lisa works with families who are resistant to guardianships and conservatorships.   [19:05] There's a less intrusive alternative to guardianships and conservatorships: an incentive trust.     KEY TAKEAWAYS:    Guardianships and conservatorships are typically court-appointed. To get one, you will need to file a petition in court.   There needs to be a link between a medical diagnosis and lacking the capacity to make certain decisions.   An incentive trust can be a more suitable alternative to guardianship and conservatorship.   Mental health issues will happen in every single family; it's critical to be prepared ahead of time.     LINKS MENTIONED:    Website    https://www.burnslev.com/professionals/lisa-m-cukier    Business Facebook    https://www.facebook.com/burnslev/    Business Twitter    https://twitter.com/burnslev    LinkedIn    https://www.linkedin.com/in/lisacukier/    BIO:    LISA M. Welcome to this week's True Fiction Project Podcast. I have the privilege of speaking with Arden O'Connor, founder and CEO of the O'Connor Professional Group. Arden shares the story she and her family experienced while working through her brother's substance use. She discusses how families can support their family members who are struggling with substance use, what type of support to offer, and how to approach a relationship with an addict. Arden gives insight into how therapists and medical providers can help with substance use and she even provides advice on how parents can talk to their children about the risks of drugs and alcohol. At the end of the episode, we hear the short story, A Small Victory, written and voiced by Shobha Nihalani.     IN THIS EPISODE:  [2:31] Arden shares her story of love and loss.  [4:28] What does it mean for there to be a genetic predisposition?  [7:45] What does Arden suggest is a good way for parents to talk about addiction with their children?  [10:28] Arden discusses what manipulation she experienced with her brother.  [16:45] What role do therapists and medical providers play in the addiction scenario?  [21:20] How can families support someone with an addiction?   [27:13] What can a parent do to support an adult child?   [34:44] A short story A Small Victory, written and voiced by Shobha Nihalani  KEY TAKEAWAYS:  Have an open relationship/conversation with your children so they are aware of what may impact them. Someone is talking to your children about these difficult topics even if you choose not to. That might be peers, family members, or someone telling them negative things.  A person with addiction is two different people. There is a person under the influence and then a sober person. Family members should seek help for themselves to determine how they can support their loved ones.   There can be added success when family members are doing alcohol and drug testing to support their loved one who has an addiction. Families need a long-term view and evaluate each scenario individually regarding family get-togethers and other events.       Fiction Credits:  Short story written and read by: Shobha Nihalani  BIO:  Arden O'Connor founded the O'Connor Professional Group to address the needs of families and individuals struggling with an array of behavioral health issues, including addiction, mental health disorders, eating disorders, learning, and other developmental challenges. Last night's meeting was the first School Committee meeting since the announcement that Superintendent Brenda Cassellius will be resigning from her position. Cassellius, who began in July 2019, announced in a press conference with Mayor Michelle Wu that she will step down at the end of the school year, and Mayor Wu expressed her commitment to hiring a new superintendent by June. The meeting began with the Superintendent's Report, which included updates on COVID-19 testing protocols and mask mandates in Boston, the status of acceleration academies for students during February vacation, and a preview of future announcements around summer programming. Committee members asked pointed questions that circled back to key outstanding issues from the last meeting, continuing to press for updated enrollment and graduation data. The School Committee tabled a planned report on an agreement between the district and the Boston Teachers' Union regarding the citywide vaccine mandate due to a court decision earlier in the day that prevented Mayor Wu from moving forward with the mandate. Public comment included numerous teachers objecting to the vaccine mandate and the tentative union agreement. In addition, the public comment period featured a large coalition of students and community members of the P.A. Shaw Elementary School advocating for the promised expansion of the school, as well as from the Boston Day and Evening Academy (BDEA) asking the Superintendent to ensure the program would continue to have necessary space and resources. The School Committee heard two reports last night, with the first one regarding extended pay for four in-district Horace Mann charter schools. The final report of the night discussed the impending search for the district's next Superintendent. Glenn Koocher, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, outlined best practices for a search and detailed potential challenges in recruiting candidates. Chair Jeri Robinson outlined next steps for the process and discussed the coming release of a new RFP for a search consultant. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Hingham Public Schools is losing its superintendent and two of six principals after a difficult pandemic year plus. Experts say being a superintendent is more challenging than ever with high expectations, demanding accountability and a "loss of civility" in interactions with some parents. Hingham is among 45 or 15% of districts in the state needing new leadership and competition will be stiff. Join us for a conversation with Tom Scott, executive directors of the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents; Kerry Ni, chair of the Hingham School Committee; and June Gustafson, head of the Hingham Education Association, representing teachers.

My first six years of speaking were spent in high school classrooms, teaching teenagers about domestic violence. (I call that my "trial by fire.") Before that, I was a theater major. Before that, I was on the speech team and performed in theater, dance and singing groups. Before that, I was a baton twirler. And before that, I was just a kid who was a ham and loved to create performances for my parents and their friends. Let's just say that almost every possible embarrassing thing that could happen to me in front of an audience (or generally in public) has already happened. I've provided training for companies as diverse as Microsoft, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, Massachusetts Association of Realtors®, Louisiana Travel Association, Association of Fundraising Professionals, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), USA Hockey, UC Santa Barbara, and AgWest Commodities. (I have a bit of a soft spot for nonprofit organizations, as this is my background!). Swan pants...
