Check out Mountain Murders Merch ShopIn 1990, 14 year old Gina Grant was arrested for bludgeoning her mother to death. Grant was suspected of cleaning up the crime scene and hiding the murder weapon. She then attempted to make the death appear as though her mother, Dorothy Mayfield, had committed suicide. Grant changed her story several times throughout the investigation. Eventually, she was sentenced to serve time in a juvenile facility. However, Gina's story was far from over. Grant was later admitted to Harvard University. Once the school discovered her involvement in Dorothy's death, they rescinded Grant's admission offer sparking a controversy. Gina Grant found herself making headlines again. Even veteran law enforcement were both shocked and disgusted by the gruesome sight of the three bodies discovered on September 13, 2004 in the home of Michelle Jones in Maitland, Florida. Despite the bloodiness of the scene, it was clear who the perpetrator was. What is unclear is whether the crime could have been prevented had different actions been taken years prior. Please consider supporting the pod by joining us over on our Patreon page! This month on Tipperary's Hidden History, Conor travels to Roscrea in 1913 where he encounters a subject matter that has long been almost off-limits in historical research in Ireland. Patricide is a grave and taboo act in many societies and cultures due to the profound familial and societal implications. The motivations for patricide can vary widely, including personal conflicts, revenge, power struggles, inheritance disputes, mental illness, or the fulfillment of prophecies or beliefs...
A Side (Adam): This week Adam discusses a movie from the mid 90s that he love and that is one of the worst reviewed movies that we have ever discussed on the podcast. It stars Keanu Reeves and Morgan Freeman. Chain Reaction B Side (Brooke): This week's episode is a story I stumbled upon while scrolling on TikTok. Patricide stories always seem to impact me differently. Maybe because I'm a parent or maybe it's because it just seems so unnatural, I don't know. This week's episode we discuss the death of Daniel Halseth. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/aside-bside/support

My special guest tonight is author Leslie Ghiglieri who's here to discuss her new book called The Decision To Kill: A True Crime Story of a Teenage Killer and the Mother Who Loved Him. In the early morning of October 18, 1986, Cherie Wier's life collapses when her teenage son takes the life of her beloved husband. For years, Cherie grapples with events preceding and following the crime, struggling to overcome the consuming grief she suffers from her loss and the difficulty she faces as she attempts to forgive her son. The courtroom accounts of gruesome details and the shocking testimonies from experts, only add to Cherie's yearning to make sense of the crime. She is tormented, wanting to know how and WHY this tragedy happened and if there was anything she could have done to prevent it . . . Parricide refers to the deliberate killing of one's own father and mother, spouse (husband or wife), children, and/or close relative. However, the term is sometimes used more generally to refer to the intentional killing of a near relative.[1] It is an umbrella term that can be used to refer to acts of matricide and patricide. Matricide refers to the deliberate killing of one's own mother.[2] Patricide refers to the deliberate killing of one's own father.[3] The term parricide is also used to refer to many familicides (i.e. family annihilations wherein at least one parent is murdered along with other family members). Societies consider parricide a serious crime and parricide offenders are subject to criminal prosecution under the homicide laws which are established in places (i.e. countries, states, etc.) in which parricides occur. According to the law, in most countries, an adult who is convicted of parricide faces a long-term prison sentence, a life sentence, or even capital punishment. Youthful parricide offenders who are younger than the age of majority (e.g. 18 year olds in the United States) may be prosecuted under less stringent laws which are designed to take their special needs and development into account but these laws are usually waived and as a result, most youthful parricide offenders are transferred into the Adult Judicial System.[4] Parricide offenders are typically divided into two categories, 1) youthful parricide offenders (i.e. ages 8–24) and 2) adult parricide offenders (i.e. ages 25 and older) because the motivations and situations surrounding parricide events change as a child matures.[5] As per the Parricide Prevention Institute, approximately 2–3% of all U.S. murders were parricides each year since 2010.[6] The more than 300 parricides occurring in just the U.S. each year means there are 6 or more parricide events, on average, each week. This estimate does not include the murders of grandparents or stepparents by a child – only the murders of their natal or legally adoptive parents.[7 Youthful parricide is motivated by a variety of factors. Current research conducted by the Parricide Prevention Institute indicates the top five motives causing a child (aged 8–24 years old) to commit parricide are:[6] issues of control - 38% (e.g. put on restriction, phone taken away, etc.); issues of money - 10% (access to life insurance, wants money for a party, etc.); stop abuse of self or family - 8%; fit of anger - 8%; wants a different life - 7% (e.g. wants to live with non-custodial parent, etc.). It is a common misconception that youthful parricide offenders murdered their parent/s to escape egregious child abuse. It's super easy to access our archives! Both Josh and Adam were a little sick when they recorded this one, but not nearly as sick as the twisted minds inside Michael Chernuchin's SVU writers' room who crafted this byzantine scheme wherein a 13-year-old girl convinces her 15-year-old sister to murder their own father, so that she can become adopted by and live with the love of her life, a 30-something weirdo who lives down the hall who reads Shakespeare with her. But, based on how Dee Dee had treated her daughter Gypsy Rose, was her murder justified? For twenty-three-year-old Gypsy's entire life, her mom had been telling others she was sick. And convincing doctors and other medical professionals she was sick. And she wasn't. Nevertheless, she was paraded around in a wheelchair because she supposedly couldn't walk, and her head was shaven because she was supposed to have cancer, and on and on. Gypsy Rose was a victim of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, a rare mental disorder where a caregiver convinces someone that they are sick when they're not, and convinces others they are sick, often for financial benefit. Always for attention and control. Gypsy Rose was less of a daughter and more of a hostage, someone who'd been medically tortured for over decades. Can we really blame her for talking someone into murdering her oppressor so she could live free? As we wrap up our series on Christian Longo we thought it would be a great idea to include the interview we did with the author of "My Daddy is a Hero", Lena Derhally. We taped this in 2021 but had not had a chance to release it yet. Originally we had planned to kick season 3 off with a series on Chris Watts but we just felt that case was well played out and picking a family annihilator that maybe not everyone knows about would be much more effective. So, while our chat with Lena does focus a lot on Chris much of what we talk about can be applied to these types of killers.NOTE: Normally Cajun Momma Tie gives you a recipe and a French Word of the Day but she had a death in her family and was unable to do so in this series. With two of his plays, Tambo & Bones and Exception to the Rule, being produced simultaneously, Dave Harris shares his chaotic but exciting schedule as he goes back and forth to LA and New York to help and make sure everything is in order on their openings. He talks about his relationship with writing and how switching from a public school to a private one influenced his writing as well as his love for theatre. He reflects on what makes theatre frustrating at times, why he chooses to write from an individual perspective, and how he uses playwriting to address his personal fears. Dave also shares why he's happiest when he's doing multiple projects, and why his friends' imaginations motivate him the most. Dave Harris is a poet, performer, and playwright whose recent works include Tambo & Bones produced at Playwrights Horizons and Center Theatre Group, and Exception to the Rule which will premiere this year at Roundabout Underground. He has won numerous awards, including the 2019 Ollie Award, The Lorraine Hansberry Award, Mark Twain Award from The Kennedy Center, the 2018 Venturous Fellowship from The Lark, and a Cave Canem poetry fellowship. Other works include Summertime, his adapted film that premiered at Sundance in 2020. His first full-length poetry collection, Patricide was also recently published from Button Poetry. His work has also been seen at Actors Theatre of Louisville Humana Festival, Roundabout Underground, Manhattan Theater Club, Center Theatre Group, The Goodman, Victory Gardens, The Kennedy Center, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and many more. Ooooof. This is a tough topic! Most children are so innocent, so sweet, so cute... and then, there are these kids. To be fair, most of these cases are kids that never had a fair shot at a happy life, but in some instances, these kids are pure evil. We have a famous Canadian case, an extremely mysterious whodunnit, horrific tales of abuse, and much, much more. So tune in, and try not to cry like Cindy did (though if you do we obviously won't blame you!)Check out our website! www.twistedlisterpod.comBrought to you by Podmoth Media Network podmoth.networkJoin us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/twistedlistersFollow us on Instagram: @twistedlisterspcastTiktok: @twistedlistersWant to start a podcast? Lizzie Borden is known to most as an American woman who was tried and acquitted of the grisly murders of her father and stepmother. More than 192 years later, the crime continues to fascinate us. The evidence of hideous transgression, carried out with excessive strikes from an ax, indicated a clear-cut verdict. Yet Lizzie was acquitted. The details of the case are remarkable.
James Charlesworth's first novel, The Patricide of George Benjamin Hill, was published in 2019. James grew up eighty miles east of Pittsburgh, attended Penn State University, and received an MFA from Emerson College in Boston, where he currently lives.
