Peggy Lillis wasn't expecting trouble when her dentist prescribed antibiotics after she had a root canal in 2010. It was a standard, just-in-case treatment to prevent infections after the procedure.She also wasn't worried when she developed diarrhea soon afterward. The kindergarten teacher assumed she'd caught a bug from one of her young students.But within just a few days, the previously healthy 56-year-old was dead – a victim of Clostridioides difficile or C. diff. These bacteria are common but can grow out of control when antibiotics or other factors deplete the healthy microbes living in the intestines – the microbiome.Patients can suffer severe diarrhea, a distortion of the colon known as megacolon, and sepsis as the infection spreads to the bloodstream. It's painful and can be hard to treat.About one out of every six patients who get C. diff will get it again in the following two months, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. Such infections kill 1 out of 11 people over the age of 65 who develop a C. diff infection in the hospital.It's a One Health problem, as the bacteria spread globally.Antibiotics are not always effective in treating C. diff. because these bacteria thrive when the natural population of microbes is killed off. Instead, many doctors are turning to treatments that can replace the healthy microbiome. These can include fecal microbiota transplants (FMTs), also known as poop transplants, or therapies that more directly replace the “good” microbes.Peggy Lillis' sons, Christian and Liam, didn't want her death to have been in vain, so they founded the Peggy Lillis Foundation to advocate for awareness of C. diff, public policy to fight it, and for better treatments.Christian Lillis says he will never get over losing his mother to C. diff.  “It remains the worst thing that has ever happened to me,” he tells One World, One Health host Maggie Fox. In this episode, Lillis tells us about this dangerous repercussion of the misuse and overuse of antibiotics, the need for new treatments, and what survivors and family members can do to take action against C. diff.

We covered how the herbicide glyphosate (in RoundUp® widely used in agriculture) damages our good gut bacteria. My guest, Dr. Stephanie Seneff, is a passionate Senior Research Scientist at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT, in Cambridge, MA. Her has researched the role of nutritional deficiencies and toxic chemicals in disease. She is the author of the book, Toxic Legacy: How the Weedkiller Glyphosate is Destroying Our Health and the Environment. On the other hand, bacteria such as E. coli, listeria, Helicobacter pylori, which causes ulcers, salmonella, and staphylococcus, can all have a devastating effect on you. Specifically, there are four types of pathogens: bacteria, fungi (such as those that cause athlete's foot or Candida), viruses, and parasites. Around 1000 particular species of bacteria have been discovered. Scientists believe that this represents between one and ten percent of the germs that could exist. It's only that around 80% of them fall inside that popular range, while the remaining 20% fall outside of it. When you eat something that contains bacteria or other pathogens, your stomach is the first line of defense. · Some benefits of a healthy intestinal system include: It aids in the digestion of nutrients like fiber, which usually is not broken down. It modulates the immunological system. It produces beneficial neurotransmitters like serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine. It was once used to control appetite and weight. A healthy microbiome starts in the mouth, and you'll need safe toothpaste and mouthwash. Use only xylitol and stevia as sweeteners as they do not affect the gut flora adversely. Get plenty of whole organic produce, especially leafy greens, which are high in fiber. Bitter foods seem to feed the beneficial bacteria and boost the immune system. Consume prebiotic foods like artichokes, bananas, asparagus, and apples, as well as prebiotic powder, to help populate your stomach with good bacteria. Most people lack the enzymes required to digest dairy effectively, and dairy acidifies the body, neutralizing the impact of calcium in milk. So you can get probiotics in different ways. It is available in pill, jar, and refrigerator form at many health food stores. You can eat foods like sauerkraut, kambochia, but watch out for foods ad drinks that are too sweet. Sugar feeds pathogenic germs, as do high glycemic foods like white bread, flour, and potatoes. The latest hybrid grain strains have been demonstrated to damage the gut lining and have had their DNA irradiated to assist them in producing what they want, resulting in damaged DNA and ill health. Artificial sweeteners such as saccharin, sucralose, and aspartame can rapidly eliminate intestinal microorganisms, similar to antibiotics. Erythritol with Monk fruit, xylitol and stevia appear to have little effect on the beneficial bacteria in the gut. However, some persons will feel an increase in gas when using xylitol and erythritol. These are called sugar alcohols; they are not metabolized in the same way as sugar and do not provide food for pathogenic bacteria. Antibiotics kill all biotic organisms inside you. That includes meats treated with it. So, conventionally reared beef thrives on grass as its primary food source. They feed them grain to ensure accurate cuts. While corn is often grown with care, it causes gastrointestinal dysbiosis in the impoverished cow. Then they get sick. So they get antibiotics to stay healthy. Sanitizers and skin creams containing chemicals contain bacteria-killing agents. People use this, which affects their gut microbiome; they continue to use it on their hands because they do not always have access to a faucet. Getting sufficient sleep when your body repairs itself is one of the essential support activities for a healthy microbiome. At least two quarts or two liters of clean water should be consumed each day. Because it helps activate your lymph system, exercise for at least 20 days and 20 minutes per day. Aside from walking, a brief 10 to 15-minute healing audio will assist you in de-stress quickly. Please take a deep breath in and hold it for a few seconds before releasing it twice or three times. Now, new research shows that the composition of a person's intestinal bacteria could play an important role in the development of type 2 diabetes. These results, from a joint European and Chinese research team, have just been published in the journal Nature. The number of people suffering from type 2 diabetes world-wide has risen rapidly in recent years,  New research now indicates that your gut bacteria can reveal whether you suffer from the disease. “We have demonstrated that people with type 2 diabetes have a high level of pathogens in their intestines,” says Jun Wang,  The 1.5 kilograms of bacteria that we each carry in our intestines have an enormous impact on our health and well being. The bacteria normally live in a sensitive equilibrium but if this equilibrium is disrupted our health could suffer. In the new study, scientists examined the intestinal bacteria of 345 people from China, of which 171 had type 2 diabetes. . The research, which was recently published in the scientific journal Nature, also demonstrated that people with type 2 diabetes have a more hostile bacterial environment in their intestines, which can increase resistance to different medicines. Similar studies carried out on sufferers of type 2 diabetes in Denmark also discovered a significant imbalance in the function of their intestinal bacteria and composition.  “The European and Chinese working on the Meta HIT project were able to make important new discoveries about the relationship between intestinal bacteria and health. The new discovery indicates a possible connection between type 2 diabetes and the intestinal bacteria in Chinese people,” Kristiansen says. Good Bacteria is also important for nutrition, immunity, and effects on the brain and behavior...." .
