This special episode focuses on Philippe Sands' latest book, 38 Londres Street – On Impunity, Pinochet in England and a Nazi in Patagonia. The title of Sands' new book refers to the address of Pinochet's torture centre in 38 London street, Santiago/Chile, and the quest to bring Pinochet to court for his deeds in London and Spain in the late 1990ies. Since the release of Philippe Sand's book in April 2025, several court cases have been started against Pinochet's officers in Chile. A second strand of the book is devoted to a member of Pinochet's staff, the Nazi engineer Walter Rauff. Famous as the constructor of the so-called “gas-waggons”, he was also notorious as a torturer and as an intelligence officer in Gestapo and Sicherheitsdienst during the 1940ies in the Nazi era, his specialty was “extraction of confessions”. He also is a protagonist of the so-called Ratline: in the post-war, he escaped several imprisonment camps and evaded justice. Like many Nazi perpetrators he emigrated to Latin America in the 1950ies and subsequently rose to new positions, with old duties. The book gives full account  of Rauffs involvement in the murders of the Pinochet intelligence agency DINA and their torture camps during the 1970ies, and his heinous practice to let people “disappear” in fishmeal factories.   Special Hosts & Moderators: Prof. Dr. Kerstin von Lingen, Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Vienna; historian Dr. Linda Erker from the Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance (DÖW); MA history student Bruno Stern and journalist Klaus Taschwer (“Der Standard”, Vienna). Waarom is herdenken belangrijk?

Autumn is the time for literary festivals, including the mighty 10-day Cheltenham Literature Festival, London's South Bank, the small but beautifully formed Cliveden and many more including Bridport, Petworth, Stratford, Henley, Harrogate, North Cornwall, Braemar and more. But this week we're going to war-torn Ukraine to feature the Lviv Book Forum, in collaboration with Hay Festival, which runs in a bomb shelter between 6th and 9th October. We talk to the courageous and undaunted Programme Director, Sofiya Chelyak, and to the human rights KC, Philippe Sands, celebrated author of East West Street, The Ratline and a new book The Last Colony. Philippe will be attending the extraordinary festival alongside Henry Marsh, Misha Glenny, Margaret Atwood, Yuval Noah Harari, Elif Shafak and Margaret MacMillan. It's actually the 29th edition of the Lviv Book Forum, Ukraine's biggest literary festival, but given the war it's had to be shrunk and with Hay's support, it's defiantly going ahead with just 40 writers. As its digital partner for the first time, Hay will broadcast the conversations free in English, Ukrainian, and Spanish. Sofiya describes the festival as running ‘in defiance of the evil that seeks to squash their freedom,' and so we applaud and admire its efforts to keep these vital conversations alive and deepen our understanding of this little-known, vast and complex country.

One way Philippe Sands has described his extraordinary new book The Ratline is as “a sort of Nazi love story”. While there is certainly a love-story between two Nazis at its heart—specifically the marriage of Otto and Charlotte Wachter—The Ratline is so much more than that. It's an investigation into the escape routes used by high-ranking German officials after the end of the Second World War, that reads at times, like a spy-thriller. It's a study of memory, responsibility and guilt. It's an examination of the self-deception that filial duty can engender. And it's an exploration of the geopolitical, ideological and historical fault-lines that are still making themselves felt, and horrendously so, today.Buy The Ratline here: https://shakespeareandcompany.com/I/9781474608145/the-ratline-love-lies-and-justice-on-the-trail-of-a-nazi-fugitive*SUBSCRIBE NOW FOR BONUS EPISODESLooking for Friends of Shakespeare and Company read Ulysses? https://podfollow.com/sandcoulyssesIf you want to spend even more time at Shakespeare and Company, you can now subscribe for regular bonus episodes and early access to Friends of Shakespeare and Company read Ulysses.Subscribe on Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/sandcoSubscribe on Apple Podcasts here: https://podcasts.apple.com/fr/podcast/shakespeare-and-company-writers-books-and-paris/id1040121937?l=enAll money raised goes to supporting “Friends of Shakespeare and Company” the bookshop's non-profit, created to fund our noncommercial activities—from the upstairs reading library, to the writers-in-residence program, to our charitable collaborations, and our free events.*Philippe Sands is an international lawyer and, since 2018, the president of English PEN. Efni Lestarinnar í dag: The Ratline er ný hlaðvarpsþáttaröð frá breska ríkisútvarpinu, BBC. Yfirskrift þáttar hljóðar einhvern veginn svona: nasistar, njósnarar, ást, dauði, leyndardómar og lygar. Í þessari tíu þátta seríu er kafað ofan í sögu Ottos von Wächter, háttsetts liðsforinga í SS-sveitunum, sem náði að flýja réttarhöldin í Nürnberg. Wachter nýtti sér flóttakerfi sem kom fjölda stórglæpamönnum nasista undan réttvísinni, sér í lagi til Suður-Ameríku. Flóttakerfi þetta er gjarnan nefnt rottuleiðir (Ratline). Nánar verður fjallað um fyrirbærið í þætti dagsins með hjálp sagnfræðingsins Þórs Whitehead, sem og hlaðvarpssþáttaröðina The Ratline frá BBC.
