Who's Your Band? Episode 167 with hosts Sean Morton and Jeffrey Paul, and special guest Comedian George Gallo! On this week's episode of Who's Your Band, we welcome on comedian George Gallo!
Adam kicks off the show with writer and director George Gallo to discuss his 2020 film The Comeback Trail, which is currently topping the charts on Paramount+. They also dive into Gallo's all-time classic Midnight Run, the importance of studying classic cinema for aspiring filmmakers, their shared admiration for Woody Allen, and a nostalgic look back at the claymation series Davey and Goliath.Next, comedian Gary Owen joins Adam in the studio to talk about his stand-up special No S, their recent show at the Ryman with Kid Rock, and some hilarious run-ins involving David Hasselhoff. They also touch on the strange coincidence of Gary and his opener having daughters with the same name, and the idea of maintaining “plausible deniability” by avoiding other comedians' material. Gary shares stories about joining the Navy, and how he managed to serve while simultaneously hosting a TV show.Later, Adam, Gary, and Jason “Mayhem” Miller tackle some of the day's top news stories, covering everything from Catholic priests and Alcatraz to Smokey Robinson. The conversation wraps up with talk about Boba and Poke, Richard Dreyfuss' grandfather, and the film The Rock. Our exit today has us fighting drug cartels and rapidly evolving aliens. This week, we are talking about a pair of features starring one of our first ever best supporting performance winners, Orlando Jones. First, we will be talking about Double Take, written and directed by George Gallo. Next, we will talk about Evolution, written by Don Jakoby, David Diamond and David Weissman and directed by Ivan Reitman. While Double Take has Orlando Jones as more of a straight man to Eddie Griffin's character, Evolution allows Jones to be more of the comedic center. Along the way, we discuss Julianne Moore, Ghostbusters, Midnight Run, David Duchovny, Michael J. Fox, MadTV, alien creatures, lame action, Gilmore Girls, and plot twists galore! Using examples from some of their favorite movies, they explore how farewell scenes work, what sets them apart from the average see-you-later, and leaving a lasting effect on your characters and the audience. We also look at the summer box office, George Gallo's Bad Boys lawsuit, Sony's purchase of Alamo Drafthouse, and answer listener questions on bad ex-managers, second steps, NDA's, fairies, and how to take advantage of downtime in LA. Returning to the airwaves after he joined me late in '23 to cover some of Robert Altman's most under-discussed movies, we have the Boston-based WBUR film critic Sean Burns & the very funny impressionist, cinephile actor-writer-producer Rob Belushi. It's the kind of sprawling, at times stream-of-consciousness inspired chat that you can only have with people with whom you're close. Press play & you'll hear ex-smokers Rob, Sean, & Blake celebrate Robert De Niro's screen love affair with cigarettes (& the '80s as a smoke-filled decade in general), express wonderment at the way that nobody does phone acting better than Bobby, relish in the reaction shots of Charles Grodin, & laugh as Rob slides into his Chicago accent to give us a little bit of Dennis Farina. This episode is a good one! Enjoy.Originally Posted on Patreon (3/7/24) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/99926294

At eighteen Russo made his first trip to Miami, where he began to dabble in show-business, working in nightclubs and hotspots before deciding to pursue acting and move to Hollywood.Russo's colorful life is currently being adapted into a feature film by producer Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Horrible Bosses, Red Dragon, and is currently filming the sequel to King Kong). Directing is not about being a dictator but about letting things happen. After selling a couple of scripts in New York but feeling burned by the lack of production companies, George Gallo decided to take his 800 bucks and try luck in Los Angeles. After knocking on many doors and a lot of cold calling, he sold MGM a script for a movie. He walked around with that 100K check in his wallet for a week before cashing it; he was worried if the check would clear. George breathes art; he is a writer, director, painter, and musician and has been married to the actress and producer Julie Lott Gallo for 38 years. As a director, George worked with Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones, Meg Ryan, John Travolta, Antonio Banderas, Robert Forster, James Caan, and Brendan Fraser, to name a few. He has created or directed all kinds of pieces, from action comedies like "Midnight Run" and "Bad Boys" to heartwarming tales such as "29th Street" and "Local Color." He was awarded "The Stanley Kramer Mad, Mad World Award" for comedy and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the "Monte Carlo Comedy Film Festival" for his film "The Comeback Trail," starring Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones, Zach Braff, Emile Hirsch, and Eddie Griffin. In this episode, George talks about his passion for writing and making movies and the relentless determination that helped him be where he is today. We talk about his directing style, his struggles with imposter syndrome, and what he believes is needed to succeed in Hollywood. He kindly shared some fantastic stories and experiences working with Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman, and Tommy Lee Jones, what he learned from them, and more. Ian talks with writer/director/producer/actor Nicholas Celozzi about two Chicago-centric films that are heading into production. The Class stars Anthony Michael Hall and centers on a group of diverse high school kids forced to spend a Saturday together, in which they learn to break down the social barriers that divide them. No, it's not a Breakfast Club remake, and in the first half of this conversation, Celozzi talks about the real-world influences that compelled him to tell this story; how he channeled the voice of a generation that's different from his own; and what got him back into the director's chair.Celozzi also wrote The Legitimate Wiseguy, an autobiographical drama that previous KtS Podcast guest George Gallo (Vanquish, Bad Boys) will direct this fall. The film will star Harvey Keitel, Emile Hirsch, and Ruby Rose, and will tell the story of Celozzi's relationship with mentor and Mafia heavy Anthony Spilotro (a version of whom was famously portrayed by Joe Pesci in Casino). The filmmaker opens up about the real-life Spilotro; his rowdy days in 1980s Hollywood; and casting Harvey Keitel as his father--a famous Illinois car salesman whose TV commercials were a staple of Ian's youth!Show Links:Read Variety's article about the upcoming production of The Class.Read The Hollywood Reporter's article announcing The Legitimate Wiseguy. Episode 53 of the HELL FUCKIN' YEAH! Podcast with Mike Gruttola. Interview with Comedian George Gallo right here on Lawn Guy Land!
George Gallo sold his first screenplay at age 19, despite not knowing anyone in the business. “The movie never got made,” he said about the lucky break, “but I had a possible vocation as a screenwriter. So then I just started writing a lot of scripts.” Eventually, one of Gallo’s scripts did get made. The comedy-crime movie Wise Guys, starring Danny DeVito and Joe Piscopo revolved around two errand boys from the mob. This was the beginning of a string of action-comedies from the screenwriter/director. Following the “tough movies with humor” category, Gallo eventually sold scripts for movies like Midnight Run, Bad Boys, The Whole Ten Yards, Middle Men, and most recently, Vanquish and The Comeback Trail. In this interview, Gallo talks about how technology now influences heist plots, how to write action sequences, his lifelong relationships with Morgan Freeman and Robert DeNiro, and why it’s more challenging to get an original script made today. George Gallo is a man of many creative talents, including screenwriting, filmmaking, producing and painting. In this fascinating interview with Richard Williams and Aiysha Jebali, director George Gallo discusses how the two worlds of filmmaking and painting intersect, what it's like to work alongside Morgan Freeman, and how hurricanes halted the filming of Vanquish (2021)! The story of a film made during Nicolas Cage during his Jimmy Stewart period. Through the eyes of director George Gallo.
Hi everyone! It’s Matinee Monday, our first of the year! It’s also the return of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence to the Bad Boys franchise, another attempt by Hollywood to reboot a classic and successful series of films. I’ll admit, I’ve been leery about watching franchise reboots, especially after the series of bad franchise entries last year. Don’t believe me? Check out Ryan’s review for GLASS (Episode #393), DARK PHOENIX (Episode #511), FAST AND FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW (Episode #554), RAMBO: LAST BLOOD (Episode #634), and TERMINATOR: DARK FATE (Episode #645). But does today’s film fall into the same nostalgic trap? You’ll find out in a moment! Before the review, we’ll have a promo from our good friends at the Moviedrone podcast. Every week, Steve & Marc focus on one feature film, assign each other homework, interact with the audience, and of course, the incredible stylings of Marc’s Movie Impressions. You can find them on Twitter and Instagram @movie_drone and on Facebook @Moviedronepod. Be sure to like, retweet, share, follow, and most importantly, subscribe! Seventeen years after the events of BAD BOYS II, Detective Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) is a grandfather looking at retiring from police work. However, Marcus’ retirement plans are put on hold after an attempt is made to kill his longtime partner, Detective Mike Lowrey (Will Smith). Now the two must come together one last time to stop this new threat. No spoilers. As much as I bag on toxic franchise fans, I want to take a minute to turn on my fellow critics, particularly the critics who lambasted 1995’s BAD BOYS (42% at Rotten Tomatoes) and 2003’s BAD BOYS II (23%). I didn’t really care about critics back then, many of which could only see and judge films in a specific, erudite way. Don’t get me wrong, I love the insights many critics bring to films, even the hottest of hot takes, but I also think film criticism, thanks in large part to the Internet, has also democratized a great deal, bringing a more popular perspective on modern filmmaking. The BAD BOYS franchise is just one example of the much larger divide that used to exist between film critics and the general audience. And nowhere is that divide larger than when it comes to Michael Bay films. BAD BOYS was Michael Bay’s breakout film, plucking him out of the obscurity of music video producer (at least at the time) and starting a string of films which would include THE ROCK, ARMAGEDDON, PEARL HARBOR, and BAD BOYS II before he would mostly disappear into the TRANSFORMERS franchise. Nearly every single one of those films scored horribly with critics, but were well-received by audiences, both at the box office and home markets. And a large part of that was Bay’s time directing those music videos, understanding how to integrate music into films. Visually entertaining, light on story, and in the case of this franchise, heavy on chemistry. BAD BOYS FOR LIFE is definitely a strong continuation of the BAD BOYS franchise, which clearly understands what made the first two films so effective with audiences. Front and center, that’s the undeniable and extremely effective chemistry between Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, a classic pairing of the ultra-cool partner with a more realistic, identifiable partner. It’s like the two never left the screen, right from the opening scene reestablishing the characters and setting the excellent blend of action and comedy. Believe it or not, One Movie Spouse has never seen the first two films, and multiple times during today’s film she was laughing uncontrollably. I’m actually kind of jealous she’s going to get to see the first two films for the first time. Better get some Skittles. The chemistry doesn’t just extend to Smith and Lawrence, however. In addition to getting the perfect action/comedy blend, we also get a film that is self-aware, willing to poke fun at iconic scenes from the first two films, and at the characters themselves, even while upping the ante story-wise. The film has a measure of predictability, including a few scenes in the front half that don’t play well, but it also contains a few twists and turns the flips the script enough to re-engage the viewer for the back half. And yes, there’s car chases and explosions, decent personal combat scenes, and a whole lotta helicopters. Marcus knows what I’m talking about. So, what took so long? Well, cost was a huge issue. The first BAD BOYS film was made for a paltry $19 million and grossed over $140 million at the box office. BAD BOYS II, by comparison, had a $130 million budget, grossing $270 million. A great deal of that price increase was the salary demands of both Michael Bay and Will Smith, who were raking in the cash for studios between 1995 and 2003. This third installment was talked about beginning in 2008, after Will Smith suffered a string of mediocre films, and Michael Bay was beginning to be lampooned over the TRANSFORMERS franchise. And so, we had to wait. Eleven years, I guess, and I wonder how that $90 million budget was divided up this time. I also wonder how it will interact with the recent television spin-off, “L.A.’s Finest”, which features Gabrielle Union as Marcus’ sister, Syd Burnett. All I know is that I can’t wait to see what else this revitalized franchise has in store. BAD BOYS FOR LIFE is a revitalization and rediscovery of the epic BAD BOYS franchise, reprised for the screen by Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, and re-introducing the franchise to a new generation of fans. It’s not a perfect film, but it is perfectly entertaining for comedy and action fans, which is exactly what it is intended to be. Cast fans, or comedy/action fans, or folks who just love to watch stuff blow up should definitely check out this film. Rotten Tomatoes: 74% Metacritic: 58 One Movie Punch: 8.0/10 BAD BOYS FOR LIFE (2020) is rated R and is currently playing in theaters.
Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and an even happier New Year from us here at Catching Up On Cinema! In this, the last of our holiday/winter themed episodes for the year, Trevor has Kyle sit down to watch writer/director George Gallo's brilliantly cast, but intensely flawed Christmas comedy, Trapped in Paradise (1994)! Starring Nicolas Cage, Jon Lovitz and Dana Carvey as a trio of bank robber brothers that find themselves stranded in a idyllic Pennsylvania town, the film is rarely as entertaining as it ought to be, but far from a waste of time if you're a fan of any of the leads.
The story of Trapped in Paradise starring director George Gallo.

Infrequent filmmaker Martin Brest may have directed the box office bombs Gigli and Meet Joe Black, but he also directed the huge critical and commercial successes Beverly Hills Cop and Scent of a Woman. Somewhere in the middle of these films, he made a fantastic action-comedy about a bounty hunter taking a criminal across country to collect his reward. That's right, we're talking about Midnight Run, a part of our Couples on the Run series. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — on this week's episode of The Next Reel as we discuss the actors in this film, particularly Robert De Niro, Charles Grodin, Joe Pantoliano, Yaphet Kotto and Dennis Farina, and how they work for us now 25 years after the film first came out — some better than others. We chat about the nature of the action-comedy film, particularly those from the 80s, and how the comedy has fared as time's worn on. We talk about the great script by George Gallo and how it stands out in its genre because of the honestly written characters that are developed well over the course of the story. And we talk about the crew who worked on it with Brest, notably Danny Elfman turning in one of his early great scores that definitely veers away from the wacky. It's a film that holds up well — mostly — and one we have a great time talking about. Listen in!
