Welcome to Secrets of Organ Playing Podcast #693! Today's guest is harpsichordist Alina Rotaru. Alina studied piano and choral conducting at the music academy in her hometown of Bucharest. After moving to Germany, she studied harpsichord with Siegbert Rampe and Wolfgang Kostujak at the Folkwang University of the Arts Essen, with Bob van Asperen at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and with Carsten Lohff and Detlef Bratschke at the University of the Arts Bremen. She is an active soloist and ensemble player, and also in charge of various orchestral, opera, and sacred music projects of the German Early and Late Baroque as an artistic director. As a soloist, she has performed across most of Europe, as well as in Japan, South America and USA. She teaches at the University of the Arts in Bremen. Her solo recordings of harpsichord works by JP Sweelinck, JJ Froberger, and English virginalists have earned excellent reviews in the music press and among their peers. Together with viol player Darius Stabinskas, Alina is the co-founder of the ensemble MORGAINE, which focuses on the music of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Despre libertatea de a-ți pune ideile în practică și cine și cum stabilește salariile. Am vorbit despre obsesia eMAG pentru date și la ce folosește ea și despre limitele și avantajele libertății. Catalin Rotaru has just released a new album titled The Lord of The Basses.  This album features Catalin performing on Bottesini's famous 300-year-old Testore bass.  Catalin has also released another project this fall titled Sonic Bridges Vol. 2. About Catalin Rotaru: Catalin Rotaru was born in Moldova, a province in the far northeast of Romania, in the same region where Romania's most celebrated composer, George Enescu was born. Leaving home at the age of 11 and settling in the city of Botosani, he began his musical studies directly with the double bass. After only one year he transferred to one of the leading music schools in Bucharest, the G. Enescu Arts Lyceum. Upon his graduation he was admitted to the Conservatory, a great accomplishment, since at the time, only one bass player was admitted each year. As part of the admission process, he had to pass 5 exams: 3 instrumental - recital, technical proficiency, sight-reading and 2 theoretical - dictation, pure theory and solfeggio. His most influential teacher there was Ion Cheptea, a direct disciple of Joseph Prunner, an eminent bassist and visionary from Austria, who moved to Bucharest at the beginning of the 20th century and established at the conservatory one of the most distinguished schools of double bass. Immediately upon graduation, he was offered a position with the Sibiu State Philharmonic, a major orchestra in Transylvania. Three years later he became associate principal with the Romanian National Radio Symphony in Bucharest. While still in Romania Catalin served as principal with the Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra of Bucharest and Orchestra Sinfonica Europea, with which he toured extensively throughout Europe. In 1995 he emigrated to the U.S. after being offered a teaching assistantship at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he also obtained a Master's Degree in music performance. He has also served as Associate Professor of Double Bass and Jazz Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and taught at Millikin University in Decatur Illinois before joining the faculty of the School of Music at Arizona State University, in 2005. Since his arrival in the U.S. Catalin has been the recipient of many prestigious awards. He received the second prize at the 1997 International Society of Bassists Solo Division Competition and the Jury's Special Award for the best performance of the required piece at that competition. He was the winner of the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts Debut Recital Award in 1997, the Central Illinois Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters Award in 1996 and in 2013, was honored with the Recognition award for Solo Performance by the International Society of Bassists, which, being an award from his peers, is one of the highest forms of recognition that a solo double bassist can receive. Catalin is one of the most in-demand International soloists of the day. His 2013 schedule alone included multiple appearances as soloist with various orchestras, performing recitals or conducting master classes at prestigious conservatories in Brazil, Japan, China, The Netherlands, Russia, Romania, Italy, Ecuador and Paraguay as well as the U.S. He also found time to perform the premieres of two new works for the bass: Andres Martin's Double Bass Concerto and Frank Proto's Sonata No. 2 for Double Bass and Piano, and serve as a juror at many of the world's most prestigious solo bass competitions. His debut solo CD, Bass*ic Cello Notes was released by Summit Records in March 2007 and in 2010 released his second CD entitled Juliana D'Agostini + Catalin Rotaru which was recorded in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In 2012 Catalin recorded his third CD, in collaboration with the National Symphony Orchestra of Paraguay, which includes the world premiere of a double bass performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5. In this talk we identify two general frameworks (inter-flow and intra-flow) that encompassseveral network coding-based systems proposed in wireless mesh networks. Our systematicanalysis of the components of these frameworks reveals vulnerabilities to a wide range of attacks,which may severely degrade system performance. We then focus on addressing the most severeand generic attack against network coding systems, known as packet pollution attack. We showthat existing cryptographic mechanisms that were proposed to solve the problem have a prohibitivecost that makes them impractical in wireless mesh networks. We propose the first practical defensemechanisms to pollution attacks in network coding for wireless mesh networks. The experimentalresults show that the proposed mechanisms can effectively filter out polluted packets and quicklyidentify and isolate attacker nodes while incurring small computation and bandwidth overhead. About the speaker: Cristina Nita-Rotaru is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Purdue University where she established the Dependable and Secure Distributed Systems Laboratory (DS2).She is a member of the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS) and is associated with the Center for Wireless Systems and Applications (CWSA) at Purdue University.Her research interests lie in designing distributed systems, network protocols and applications that are robust to failure, mis-configuration, and malicious attacks. Cristina Nita-Rotaru is a recipient of the NSF Career Award in 2006. She has served on the Technical Program Committee of numerous conferences in security, networking, and distributed systems. She is currently serving as an Associate Editor for ACM Transactions on Information Security and Elsevier Computer Communications.

Greg Sarchet considers himself fortunate to have had an array of musical experiences and training, from studying with his first teacher, jazz luminary Rufus Reid, to receiving degrees from the Juilliard School (where he was a student of Michael Morgan), to hundreds of television/radio commercial recordings. His strong interest in researching the double bass and ongoing international exchange efforts were recognized by a 1996 Chicago Artists International Program award which sent him to the Czech Republic, Germany, and Austria for performances, masterclasses, and archival research. These and other exchange activities have allowed him to build an extensive library of unpublished, out-of-print, and contemporary double bass works, as well as a first-hand understanding of Europe's leading teaching methods. Since 1986, he has been a member of the Lyric Opera of Chicago Orchestra. Additionally, he frequently serves as Principal Bass with Chicago Opera Theater and the Chicago Chamber Orchestra. He maintains a limited private studio for high school and adult pupils. Briefly, his musical foundation was laid by his first double bass teachers, Rufus Reid and Todd Coolman. The musical values and priorities they, among others, instilled in him have led him to a wide variety of professional opportunities ranging from recordings with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Mannheim Steamroller, Smashing Pumpkins, and hundreds of television and radio commercials.

Thus, a significant concern is the ability to route in the presence of Byzantine failures which include nodes that drop, fabricate, modify, replay, or mis-route packets in an attempt to disrupt the routing service. In this talk we will present ODSBR, our on-demand Byzantine resilient routing protocol for ad hoc wireless networks. The protocol relies on an adaptive probing technique that detects a malicious link after $log n$ faults have occurred, where $n$ is the length of the path. Problematic links are avoided by using a weight-based mechanism that multiplicatively increases their weights and by using an on-demand route discovery protocol that finds a least weight path to the destination. Our protocol bounds the amount of damage that an attacker or a group of colluding attackers can cause to the network. We demonstrate through simulation the effectiveness of ODSBR, in mitigating Byzantine attacks. Our analysis of the impact of these attacks versus the adversary's effort gives insights into their relative strengths, their interaction and their importance when designing secure routing protocols. Finally, we show how the technique used by ODSBR can be applied to hybrid wireless networks consisting of cellular and ad hoc 802.11 wireless networks. About the speaker: Cristina Nita-Rotaru is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Sciences and a member of CERIAS (Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security) at Purdue University. She conducts her research within the Dependable and Secure Distributed Systems Laboratory (DS2). . Her research interests lie in designing distributed systems, network protocols and applications that are dependable and secure, while maintaining acceptable levels of performance. Current research focuses on : * designing intrusion-tolerant architectures for distributed services that scale to wide-area networks * investigating survivable routing in wireless ad hoc networks * providing access control mechanisms for secure group communication. Her work is funded by the Center for Education and Research in Information Security and Assurance (CERIAS), by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
