Two-time Baylor All-American and 2005 NCAA Champion Sophia Young-Malcolm joined Baylor's staff as Assistant AD for Player Development in May of 2021. Young-Malcolm played on Baylor's first NCAA Championship team in 2005, was a two-time All-American and one of seven players in BU history to amass both 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career. As Assistant AD for Player Development, Young will serve the student-athletes in the women's basketball program as the liaison between the Baylor Student-Athlete Center for Excellence (SACE). The SACE department serves student-athletes in two major areas: academic services and character formation. Young will also spearhead the program's community service efforts and assist in recruiting. Young's four-year playing career at Baylor spanned from 2002-06. Through the 2020-21 season, Young still ranks fourth all-time in scoring, fifth in field goal percentage, second in rebounds (first in NCAA era), and second in double-doubles. At the time of her selection, Young was Baylor's highest-ever draft pick in the WNBA when she was the fourth overall selection of the San Antonio Silver Stars in 2006. The Silver Stars got a solid return on their investment with Young playing 301 career games over nine seasons, including three WNBA All-Star selections. She tallied 4,300 career points and 1,807 rebounds in a career that spanned from 2006-2015 and resulted in a selection to the San Antonio Stars' All-Decade Team. Young also played overseas in the Euroleague and Eurocup. After leaving professional basketball, Young continued leading her AAU basketball program called Sophia Young Elite in San Antonio. Her programs produced student-athletes that went to Division I schools that included UTEP, Oklahoma State, Abilene Christian and Indiana, among others. She also coached for two seasons as head coach at the Cornerstone Christian School in San Antonio, collecting a winning record in each of the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. Since that time, she has served the San Antonio community as a realtor. Young was born in Saint Vincent, West Indies, and she played her high school basketball in Shreveport, La. at Evangel Christian Academy. She was a 2016 inductee into the Baylor Athletics Hall of Fame and a 2021 inductee into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Detroit Tigers 4, Cleveland Guardians 2 Chicago Cubs 5, Arizona Diamondbacks 4 Chicago White Sox 3, New York Yankees 1 – Game 1 Chicago White Sox 5, New York Yankees 0 – Game 2 Tigers 4, Guardians 2 – Tigers top Guardians 4-2 for Faedo’s first big league win Rookie Alex Faedo allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings for his first major league win and Miguel Cabrera had an RBI double as the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-2. Faedo struck out two in his fourth appearance since being called up from Triple-A Toledo on May 4. Cabrera’s double in the first scored Robbie Grossman and was the 603rd of his career, tying Cal Ripken Jr. for 16th all-time. Guardians righty Shane Bieber struck out a season-high 10 in seven innings. He gave up six hits and three runs, two of them earned, but remained winless since April 20. Cubs 5, Diamondbacks 4 – Wisdom, Schwindel homer as Cubs rally past Diamondbacks 5-4 Patrick Wisdom and Frank Schwindel hit consecutive homers against Ian Kennedy in the eighth inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 to avoid a four-game series sweep. Wisdom had a bouncer go just foul right before he connected for his ninth homer, sending a leadoff drive deep to center field. Schwindel then drove a 1-0 pitch from Kennedy into the bleachers in left for his fourth homer. Schwindel and Wisdom also hit back-to-back homers during Chicago’s 7-6 loss on Saturday. White Sox 3, Yankees 1/White Sox 5, Yankees 0 – Anderson’s HR hushes Yankees, lifts Chisox to twinbill sweep The White Sox took the opener of their doubleheader by scoring twice off Aroldis Chapman in the ninth inning of a 2-1 decision over the Yankees. AJ Pollock led off the ninth by homering against Chapman, who also gave up a one-out RBI double to Adam Engel. Aaron Judge briefly tied the game for the Yankees by homering off Kendall Graveman with one out in the eighth.  Chicago wrapped up a sweep by scoring five times in the eighth inning of a 5-0 shutout of the Yanks. Tim Anderson capped the rally with a three-run homer following RBI singles by Andrew Vaughn and Reese McGuire. Michael Kopech worked the first seven innings of a combined three-hitter. Tonight Chicago Cubs (Smyly 1-5) at Cincinnati (Gutierrez 0-5), 6:40 p.m. Detroit (Rodriguez 0-0) at Minnesota (Archer 0-1), 7:40 p.m. White Sox are off MLB – Cubs C Willson Contreras day to day with hamstring injury Chicago Cubs manager David Ross has praised catcher Willson Contreras for speaking up after he felt some tightness in his right hamstring. Contreras left Saturday’s 7-6 loss to Arizona after he got hurt running the bases in the third inning. Contreras was out of the lineup for the series finale against the Diamondbacks, but he is considered day to day and Ross said it could have been worse. With Contreras’ injury, the Cubs brought up catcher P.J. Higgins from Triple-A Iowa and designated infielder Ildemaro Vargas for assignment. MLB – Boone: Donaldson shouldn’t make ‘Jackie’ remark to Anderson New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone says slugger Josh Donaldson was wrong to make a remark referencing Jackie Robinson when speaking to White Sox star Tim Anderson. A day after the comment called “racist” by Chicago manager Tony La Russa — an assessment that Anderson agreed with — Major League Baseball continued to investigate. Anderson, one of baseball’s leading Black voices, hit a home run as Chicago swept a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. Anderson and Donaldson didn’t speak to reporters. Donaldson, who is white, said Saturday he twice called Anderson “Jackie” — as in Robinson, who broke MLB’s color barrier in 1947. He said he’s used the reference in the past with Anderson, who said he viewed himself as a potential modern-day Robinson in a 2019 interview with Sports Illustrated. Parker was the sixth player to post a triple-double when she pulled it off in 2017 against the San Antonio Stars. Golf – PGA – Thomas takes PGA Championship Justin Thomas has captured the PGA Championship for the second time in five years. Thomas stormed back from seven shots back to win the second Major of the season in a three-hole playoff with Will Zalatoris. Thomas birdied the first two playoff holes and closed with a par.  Thomas began the tournament with back-to-back 67s, despite getting the poor side of the draw. He shot 74 on Saturday to go backward, but he made a back-nine charge on Sunday and birdied the 17th. He closed with a 67 and finished at 5-under 275 over 72 holes.  Zalatoris began the day three back of Mito Pereira. Zalatoris finished a rollercoaster round of 71 to match Thomas.  Pereira squandered a one-shot lead on the 18th when he drove into the creek off the tee and made double bogey. Indy 500 – Dixon gets pole with record-breaking run Scott Dixon used a breathtaking run of more than 234 mph to post the fastest Indianapolis 500 pole run in history. The New Zealander will lead the field to green in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” for the fifth time in his career. Dixon turned four laps at an average of 234.046 mph around Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His average broke Scott Brayton’s pole-winning record set in 1996. Alex Palou will start next Sunday’s race from the No. 2 spot. It’s the best Palou has qualified in his three Indy starts. NASCAR – Blaney wins All-Star race, $1M 2 laps after thinking he won Ryan Blaney had to go two extra laps after thinking he had already won NASCAR’s All-Star race and $1 million. Blaney stayed in front through a green-white-checkered finish after a caution came out just yards before he got to the line the first time Sunday night at Texas. Blaney’s crew was already celebrating the victory in the pit and the driver had already lowered the window net after crossing the start-finish line. Pushed by his Penske teammate Austin Cindric on the restart, Blaney was able to stay in front and hold off Denny Hamlin. Tennis – French Open – Gauff, Alcaraz reach 2nd round Coco Gauff didn’t let 10 double-faults, 12 break points or a warning from the chair umpire about receiving coaching from Dad disrupt her progress into the second round at the French Open. The 18-year-old American opened stay in Paris with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Canadian qualifier Rebecca Marino.  Rising star Carlos Alcaraz also advanced. The 19-year-old from Spain never faced a break point while beating Juan Ignacio Londero 6-4, 6-2, 6-0 in less than two hours.  Dominic Thiem extended his losing streak to 10 matches as he works his way back from a torn tendon in his right wrist. Also making early exits Sunday were two-time Grand Slam champion Garbiñe Muguruza and No. 6 seed Ons Jabeur. Muguruza won the French Open in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2017. Olympics – Tokyo Olympic film debuts in Japan; headed next to Cannes The documentary film about the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics has had its first public viewing. The 120-minute film is produced by Japanese Naomi Kawase and looks at the Olympics primarily from the point of view of the athletes and those around them. Kayla Alexander (@kjalexan40) is a Canadian professional basketball player for the Minnesota Lynx of the Women's National Basketball Association. She played college basketball for the Syracuse Orange. She's a devoted Christian and a published author and illustrator.  You can find more of her creative side at kaylaalexander.net. Kayla played seven seasons in the WNBA, most recently for the Chicago Sky. She played her first five WNBA seasons for the San Antonio Stars, one season for the Indiana Fever, and this past summer she was picked up by the Chicago Sky. Kayla Alexander attended Syracuse University from 2009-2013 on a four year athletic scholarship. She graduated as the women's program's all-time leading scorer. A lot of this description comes from her bio on her website. What you're going to learn when you listen to this episode is that it's the little things that add up to the big things. The ability to receive feedback in a way that empowers you to work with all kinds of different coaches. One of her driving passions is that she wants to make a difference for youth. Her "why" for what she does is to pass on the support she received in her earlier years to others in their earlier years.  One of Kayla's goals is to provide for her family. I think many people in the world are going to feel this way. If someone does everything they can to make you the best version of yourself it inspires you to give back.  Overall, there are a tonne of takeaways for young athletes and people facing uncertainty in their future. Lots that people can relate to and be inspired by.  If you enjoy this episode, please share it on social media and help The Lifestyle Chase grow. This is a big passion project of mine and I'd love to be able to build on it each episode. If you haven't already, please check out past episodes! Thanks for the support!

Along with all the negative, you need some positive reinforcement. - Carma Poppens Nothing is ever easy, for me, it’s the same as farming… you keep doing the job until it’s done. Role modeling, doing by example is worth more than words. - Tony Poppens In this episode Kathy is joined by Carma and Tony Poppens, the proud parents of retired professional basketball player Chelsea Poppens. Chelsea began her career playing AAU basketball beginning the summer of her seventh-grade year. During that time the family spent summers on the road together, driving one hour and ten minutes to practice twice a week! They were gone many weekends, slowing down during her Junior year of high school after fatigue and burnout took their toll. She went on to attend Iowa State for four years and played professional basketball after her ISU season was done. She finished her career at age 27 in December of 2018. Carma and Tony live on a farm in Aplington, Iowa. After many dedicated years in the stands, it was difficult for them not to be able to attend all of her professional games overseas, but they enjoyed reading about and watching her games online! Chelsea holds an impressive record at Iowa State, being one of only two players to achieve more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in the history of the Iowa State women’s basketball program. She was drafted in the second round of the WNBA and played for the San Antonio Stars. Carma and Tony discuss Chelsea’s experiences growing up on a farm and her determination and dedication to play. They credit her competitive nature, ability to return to sports after long seasons, and “never give up” attitude with her sports performance. Unlike many professional athletes, Chelsea did not spend her early years specializing in basketball, but played soccer and ran on the state level in track and field at the high school level. In addition, her upbringing living on a working farm and being coached by both Tony and Carma contributed to their close family dynamic. In her four years at Iowa State, Tony only missed attending two (home and away) games! Their family is such an incredible example for other sports parents, and they advise parents in the thick of trying to find a good balance to listen to their children, especially allowing independence in their drive and dedication to reach their individual goals. The WNBA season came to a close this week in a blaze of glory, with the two best teams for the second year in a row battling for five entertaining and exciting games. Congratulations to the Minnesota Lynx on their fourth WNBA championship. In addition to game five being played, the off-season maneuvers of WNBA franchises began in earnest with the Seattle Storm hiring veteran coach Dan Hughes as their new head coach, replacing Gary Kloppenburg, who was Seattle's interim coach after the team fired Jenny Boucek on August 10th. Hughes "retired" after the 2016 season as coach and general manager of the San Antonio Stars, but a year away from the WNBA convinced him and his family he needed to go back into coaching. Hughes returns to Dishin & Swishin where he has been a guest previously both as coach of the San Antonio Stars and college basketball analyst. Topics covered include: - Impressions of the WNBA finals, and how to compete in the same conference as Minnesota and Los Angeles - How to stabilize the inconsistencies and improve the Storm's playoff seeding - What to say to those that see him as "just another coach" instead of someone new and younger - Building a roster for 2018 and what to expect. - Can he catch a fish?

It's been an unconventional rookie season for Kelsey Plum, the top overall pick in the 2017 WNBA draft by the San Antonio Stars. But after a slow start, perpetuated by a lack of playing time, Plum is reminding everybody of the transcendent star she was during her four years playing for Mike Neighbors at University of Washington, setting scoring records while doing it with an efficiency no one has ever seen. Last week, she collected 12 assists in one game, scored 23 points in another, and added to a remarkable stat: the Stars are 5-0 when she plays 30+ minutes, 1-21 when she doesn't. We talk to Plum about that stat, the way her game has developed both off the ball and on the defensive end, along with an array of bigger-picture issues. Among them: what does it mean for the greater appreciation and understanding of women's basketball to have WNBA players in a video game? Exactly what does it mean when we compare women's players to men's players, and why don't we compare men's players to women's players more? Learn more about your ad choices. Hello, it's been a while! It's always nice to provide WNBA fans with additional information and content, so it is time for a new "In her own words" segment here on the website. As a reminder, the "In her own words" interviews are unedited audio from a pre- or post-game interview, in its entirety, without podcast enhancements or modifications. Yesterday, the San Antonio Stars fell to 2-17 on the season, the first under the leadership of general manager Ruth Riley and head coach Vickie Johnson. Some games they are competitive, others not so much. Not in question is that there appears to be good young talent on the roster, including guards Kayla McBride and Moriah Jefferson, this year's first round draft choices Kelsey Plum and Nia Coffey, plus young posts Dearica Hamby, Isabelle Harrison and Kayla Alexander. Two questions we have "heard" on twitter time and again throughout the season though. With the young talent and a team not making the playoffs, why are the veterans like Erika de Souza and Sydney Colson starting (in Erika's case) or getting minutes that could be developing players like Alexander and Plum?  Is it time, or will there be a time, when youth shall be served and they get the minutes?Plum was drafted number one overall, and all both Plum and Jefferson have played point and off the ball during their college careers. They rarely play together. Making it more intriguing is the fact that Johnson plays Colson-Plum-McBride and Colson-Jefferson-McBride but seems unwilling to play Jefferson-Plum-McBride as a combination. Obviously McBride's ankly injury yesterday defers the option to play the combo, but why the reluctance, and will we see it? I was able to ask both of these questions to Johnson post-game yesterday. The responses are interesting, and show a coach determined to continue to try to win games, not just develop players, but also a coach trying to teach her younger player

When I first started watching women’s basketball, many years ago at this point, one of the teams that captured my imagination and made the game so exciting was the New York Liberty, especially in the early years of the WNBA. Those teams were loaded with talent; Teresa Weatherspoon, Crystal Robinson, Sue Wicks, Rebecca Lobo, Kym Hampton, and of course Vickie Johnson. Johnson was always one of my favorites, as she always seemed to make the big plays and be in the right spots at the right times. She wasn’t a superstar but that’s what made her all the more fun to cheer for. Fast-forward a decade or so, and after the end of her career as a player and years as an assistant coach VJ as she will always be known to her fans is the head coach of the San Antonio Stars, where she is mentoring one of the youngest teams in the WNBA but also one with some extremely interesting players. In this, her first year, Johnson still has not been able to coach the starting lineup she anticipated having when selecting her roster. Kayla McBride just returned from playing in Europe, and in fact arrived on Friday, took her physical on Friday, and played Friday night in her first game. Second-year guard Moriah Jefferson still has not played after arriving with knee soreness and getting the flu. Finally, number one draft choice Kelsey Plum played in the first exhibition game before spraining her ankle and missing the first three games of the season too. Despite dropping those first three games, there has been bright spots for the Stars, and Johnson’s trademark defense, hustle, and intensity on both ends of the court. Veteran Monique Currie has been nothing short of sensational, leading the team and playing out of position wherever Johnson plays her. Young center Isabelle Harrison has been impressive at times and will continue to improve, while forward Dearica Hamby continues to impress with growth and improvement after recently having a baby. In their own words podcasts are just that, the words of the guest as spoken and unedited. You can hear the voice inflection, the background conversation and anything else to help frame the context of the interview. To quote the Grateful Dead, what a long strange trip it's been! And it's only been just over a week since the WNBA draft started the ball rolling. Since that time, Kelsey Plum, winner of every major award in Division I women's college basketball was selected number one overall by the San Antonio Stars, the subject of trade rumors that didn't come to happen on draft night (or after that), was rumored to be unhappy and possibly not going to San Antonio (not true), and had her agent blast the franchise for what she thought was a possible mistake in not trading Plum to a team that seemed to want her more. Today Plum arrived in San Antonio. She signed her contract. She went on a full scale promotional media blitz, including local television and meeting the beat writers covering the Stars. She handled it all like a seasoned veteran, flashing the smile that Stars' fans are going to love, talking about how much she enjoyed playing with Moriah Jefferson on USA basketball, and praising her meeting with head coach Vickie Johnson (who it was rumored did not want to draft her. To read more about Plum's meeting with the local media, Shattered Backboard's Alley Steadham has you covered here. At the end of the day, Plum still had the energy and enthusiasm to climb on the phone with Dishin & Swishin host David Siegel for the first "in their own words" segment of the 2017 WNBA basketball season. Plum talked about the whirlwind experience of becoming a pro, meeting the people of San Antonio and cracking festival eggs on their heads (video available online, playing defense for one of the great defensi

For the next few days, in anticipation of the WNBA draft, being held on Thursday April 13th, Dishin & Swishin will present podcast to help familiarize you with some of the potentially top picks in the draft. Today, we start with most likely the number one pick overall, and one of the more interesting prospects to come around in years, the University of Washington's dynamic duo of Kelsey Plum and Chantel Osahor. We are happy to discuss them with their former coach at Washington, Mike Neighbors, the new head coach at Arkansas. Plum is surely at the top of the list of the San Antonio Stars, owners of the number one pick. How could she not be? After breaking records throughout the Pac-12 and nationally, Plum won the Naismith and Wooden Awards as top player in the country, Lieberman award as best point guard, and Staley award given to the top guard in the country, among other honors. What should make her the number one overall pick, however, according to one former coach and GM we talked to, is the leadership she brings to the court. According to that coach and GM, talented players are coachable, and there are several worthy of the number pick based on their game, but when you take the number one overall pick, you want more. You want that person that will come in, and accept the responsibilities on and off the court that go with that position. Plum is that person. Her teammate Osahor makes for a much more interesting situation come draft day. Osahor's statistics scream first round pick: 15.8 points per game, 15.3 rebounds per game, 4.1 assists per game. She is extremely intelligent, and has tremendous hands. Her size and speed, as well as concerns about injuries could scare off WNBA teams. She did average over 33 minutes per game this season, and played in 33 of 34 games, so her stamina and ability to stay healthy should be less of a concern. As coach Neighbors discusses on the podcast, Washington kept a schedule

If you have been listening to our podcasts over the years, you know that the Roundtable discussions are some of our most enjoyable and most popular podcasts. Today we bring you a roundtable featuring two of the most competitive players you will ever find, Jayne Appel-Marinelli, recently retired from the San Antonio Stars, and Mistie Bass, who just completed the season with the Phoenix Mercury. These two played the WNBA finalist Minnesota Lynx and Los Angeles Sparks a combined total of 15 times during the 2016 WNBA season and playoffs, so they are well equipped to discuss the success and difficulties playing with and against the finalists. Based on the finals, at least a portion of the new WNBA playoff format is a success. For perhaps the first time in WNBA history, the league has the two best teams meeting in the finals, which should make for some great basketball and a fun series to watch. First place Minnesota comes in with a 28-6 record, featuring a Lynx quartet of United States Olympians in Maya Moore, Sylvia Fowles, Seimone Augustus and Lindsay Whalen. Rebekkah Brunson is an experienced veteran completing their starting lineup, and the bench is deep right to the end, with even more experience. Los Angeles finished second in the regular season with a 26-8 record, and while they don't have a great deal of WNBA finals experience (Ann Wauters is the only Sparks player with finals experience), they are long and athletic, with talented scorers from inside and out, led by Most Valuable Player Nneka Ogwumike and former MVP Candace Parker. Ogwumike and Parker combined to average 43 points and almost 19 rebounds per game in the semi-final series against Chicago, and are a difficult matchup. When they are on their game, it opens up the outside for Kristi Toliver, Alana Beard and Essence Carson for their shots. Jantel Lavender could be starting for most teams and is Sixth Player of the year in the league, and Chelsea Gray has be

The San Antonio Stars knew it was going to be a rebuilding year. When they lost Sophia Young-Malcolm to retirement, Jia Perkins requested a trade, Danielle Robinson suffered a season-ending injury, and Danielle Adams was released, they were without 41 points per game from a 2015 team that only averaged 68 to begin with. Injuries have acerbated the problem, with Kayla McBride breaking her foot and various other miscellaneous ailments sidelining other key players. The result is a 6-23 team; not exactly the way coach Dan Hughes hoped to end his career. One of the bright spots though has been the play and development of the Stars’ number one draft choice, Moriah Jefferson. In a perfect world you don’t throw a rookie point guard out there and say here you go run the team, but with Robinson out, that’s exactly what Hughes had to do. Jefferson has not disappointed. Sure there have been some lessons learned, but assistant coach Vickie Johnson was quick to point out recently that Jefferson is not making the same mistakes she made at the start of the season, when she relied on some of the successful athleticism plays that worked at UConn, but don’t work against veteran WNBA guards. There is no denying her success though, as she currently sits second among rookies in scoring with 12.6 points per game, behind only her ex-Husky teammate Breanna Stewart. That is also second to McBride on the Stars. Jefferson leads all rookies in assists at 4.0 per game, good enough for eighth in the league.  Perhaps most notable though, is she only has committed five turnovers or more once this season, an impressive stat, especially for a rookie point guard. As a comparison, Sue Bird has committed five turnovers four times this season. With a role in a new Adidas commercial hitting television tonight, which you can see here, Jefferson will be getting more a
