Rundown: With Garrett Crochet's starting pitching future dashed, what are the player development lessons with his situation? How should those apply when watching Noah Schultz's development? Jose Rodriguez inches closer to the majors as he's added to the 40-man roster. Where does he stack up with other White Sox middle infield prospects? Adam Engel and Danny Mendick were non-tendered, but they should be considered player development wins for the White Sox. Baseball Prospectus released its Top 10 list. Locked On White Sox - Daily Podcast On The Chicago White Sox
The Chicago White Sox non-tender Adam Engel, Danny Mendick and Mark Payton. The White Sox 40-man roster is now at 35. The decision to non-tender Engel, Mendick and Payton was not surprising but it creates even more questions marks for the Sox. Mendick probably would have provided good competition at second base while Engel should always be considered a far better outfielder than Gavin Sheets, it's just that Engel is not a lefty bat. Could Jose Abreu land with the San Diego Padres? Sounds like there is strong interest. It's still a little surreal that Abreu might very well end his career with a different team. Also, it was three years ago when the White Sox signed Yasmani Grandal to the richest contract in team history.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Hey Sox fans! Welcome back to off-season White Sox chatter. This past week, the Sox added Jose Rodriguez and Bryan Ramos to the 40-man roster then declined to tender a contract to Adam Engel, Danny Mendick and Mark Payton. After the week of moves, the 40-man roster is now at 35. How will the White Sox go about filling out their roster? There are many needs to address. The San Diego Padres are rumored to be interested in Jose Abreu. Heading west makes a lot of sense for Abreu. Could the White Sox go after shortstop Xander Bogaerts? It's seems extremely unlikely however the Sox have made big splashes in the past during November. Three years ago, on November 21st, the White Sox signed Yasmani Grandal to the richest contract in team history... 4yr./$73M. Thank you for the continued support, have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving... Go Sox! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/good-guys-talk-back/message
In the spirit of the holiday season, SSS duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and west coast correspondent, Will, raise glasses high to José Abreu, reportedly at the top of the San Diego Padres wish list, thanking him for all of his years of being about the only player on the White Sox worth watching and, often, the only one who seemed to be trying. If the reports are true, José finally has a real chance of playing deep into the postseason, and may that happen for him. We do, however, refrain from breaking into Auld Lang Syne. As for the players left behind after the White Sox finished emptying the outfield defense by non-tendering Adam Engel and the infield defense by doing the same with Danny Mendick, well, there are some. In the outfield, during the half of the season Luis Robert can't manage to play, the lineup should be Eloy Jiménez-Leury García-Gavin Sheets. In the infield, Rick Hahn apparently thinks things will be swell with either Romy González (three BBs, 50 Ks in MLB) or Lenyn Sosa (one BB, 12 Ks) at second, or with both of them forming the up-the-middle defense when Tim Anderson takes off half the season. Don't be surprised if every pitcher goes on bended knee asking to be traded. Ho-ho-ho. But we are a holiday ahead with the ho-ho-hoing. Instead, it is time to baste the turkey, along with Ken Williams and Jerry Reinsdorf, and look on enviously as other teams ladle on the gravy of prime free agents and trade tasty desserts the White Sox have to pass on because they have nothing anyone wants to trade for. But, hey, the holiday season is upon us, so ... Happy Thanksgiving! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Detroit Tigers 4, Cleveland Guardians 3 Chicago Cubs 7, Washington National 5 – 11 Innings Chicago White Sox 4, Houston Astros 3 Tigers 4, Guardians 3 – Carpenter hits HR, Francona ejected as Tigers beat Guardians Rookie Kerry Carpenter homered for the second straight night and the Detroit Tigers survived a wild ninth inning to defeat the Cleveland Guardians 4-3. Cleveland manager Terry Francona was ejected for arguing when the umpires ruled Myles Straw struck out with the tying run on third for the second out of the inning. Plate umpire Lance Barksdale originally ruled Straw fouled off a 2-2 pitch from Tigers closer Gregory Soto. The four umpires had a meeting and ruled Straw swung and missed for strike three. Francona argued the call with Barksdale and was quickly ejected. White Sox 4, Astros 3 – Moncada hits winning single in 8th again, ChiSox beat Astros Yoán Moncada came through with the go-ahead single in the eighth inning for the second straight game, and the Chicago White Sox rallied to beat the Houston Astros 4-3. The White Sox have won five straight. They moved within a game of AL Central leader Cleveland. Moncada hit a tiebreaking two-run single in Monday’s 4-2 win. This time, Chicago had a runner on third when he singled to center against Héctor Neris to make it 4-3. The showdown between AL Cy Young Award contenders Dylan Cease and Justin Verlander didn’t live up to its billing. Each allowed three runs. Cubs 7, Nationals 5 – F/11 – Wisdom’s double in 11th propels Cubs to 7-5 win over Nats Patrick Wisdom drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 7-5. Wisdom led off the inning with a double down the left-field line against Victor Arano, scoring automatic runner Willson Contreras. Wisdom then went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Seiya Suzuki’s single. Brandon Hughes pitched the 10th for Chicago and Mark Leiter Jr. worked the 11th for his first save. Nationals prospect C.J. Abrams extended the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th, his first hit with Washington. Today Chicago Cubs (Smyly 5-6) at Washington (Abbott 0-2), 1:05 p.m. Detroit (Norris 0-4) at Cleveland (Quantrill 9-5), 7:10 p.m. WSJM/WCSY 6:50 Houston (Valdez 11-4) at Chicago White Sox (Kopech 4-8), 8:10 p.m. MLB – La Russa rejects idea fan pushed him to use pinch runner White Sox manager Tony La Russa got a kick out of the idea that a screaming spectator convinced him to insert a pinch-runner during Chicago’s winning rally against the Houston Astros on Monday night. La Russa insisted Tuesday he had no idea a fan near the dugout was yelling for him to send in Adam Engel to run for Eloy Jiménez when he made the move. Jiménez had just hit a tying, two-run double during a four-run eighth inning that propelled Chicago to a 4-2 victory. A smiling La Russa told reporters to “make his day, tell him I heard him.” La Russa said he and his staff were trying to decide whether to keep Jiménez in for a potential at-bat later with the game tied in the eighth. WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – Round 1 (1 Game series) Tonight New York Liberty at Chicago Sky, 8:00 p.m. NBA – NBA schedule won’t have games on Election Day this year The NBA will be off on Election Day. The league’s schedule for the coming season will have all 30 teams playing on Nov. 7. That’s the night before the midterm elections. The NBA is hoping teams use that night as an opportunity to encourage fans to get out and vote, plus amplify the need for civic engagement. Nov. 8 is Election Day and no NBA teams have games scheduled then. The move is a rarity for the league. The NBA typically plays no games on Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve and tries to avoid scheduling games on the day of the NCAA men’s basketball championship game. NBA – Bulls rookie Lewis needs knee surgery, out indefinitely The Chicago Bulls say rookie Justin Lewis will need surgery to repair an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and is out indefinitely. The team said Tuesday that Lewis was injured last weekend and will have surgery in the coming weeks. The 6-foot-8 forward went undrafted after averaging 16.8 points and 7.9 rebounds as a sophomore at Marquette. He signed with the Bulls in July. NFL – Seattle QB Lock tests positive for COVID-19; out vs. Bears Seattle Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock has tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss the team’s preseason game against Chicago. The Seahawks issued a statement regarding Lock’s positive test about two hours following the end of a practice in which Lock was a full participant and led the No. 1 offense. Seattle coach Pete Carroll announced after practice that Lock would start Thursday’s game against the Bears after he served as the backup to Geno Smith in last weekend’s preseason game in Pittsburgh. Lock was acquired from Denver as part of the trade that sent Russell Wilson to the Broncos and has been competing with Smith for the starting job with the Seahawks. NFL – QB Stafford shows no throwing limitations in Rams scrimmage Matthew Stafford showed no throwing limitations while fully participating in a scrimmage with the Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday. Stafford’s smooth play further underlined the Super Bowl-winning quarterback’s declaration that his injured elbow will be fine. Stafford made all sorts of throws during the lengthy scrimmage at the Rams’ training complex. Coach Sean McVay was pleased by the latest step in the veteran quarterback’s increased workload. The 34-year-old Stafford played through elbow pain last season while leading the Rams to the title in his first season with the team. He had an unspecified elbow injection in the offseason. NFL – NFL looks like old self entering 3rd season in COVID-19 era The NFL essentially is back to normal entering its third season amid COVID-19. Derrick Henry has been seen jogging on the field with his daughter after practice. Green Bay Packers are once again borrowing kids’ bicycles for the ride to practice. Fans are up close to their favorite players getting autographs, high-fives and handshakes. There are no more trailers or tents for testing and masks are rare. All the protocols devised and tweaked by the league and the NFL Players Association implemented in 2020 and 2021 were suspended last March with the NFL citing trends showing the spread of the coronavirus declining. LLWS – Utah boy injured in dorm fall at Little League World Series A 12-year-old Little League World Series player from Utah is in critical condition with what his family said was a head injury suffered when he fell off a bunk bed at the dormitory complex in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Easton Oliverson is a pitcher and outfielder for the Snow Canyon team out of Santa Clara, Utah. His dad, Jace Oliverson, is an assistant coach on the team. Oliverson posted on Facebook that doctors told him his son had punctured an artery which caused bleeding on the brain and needed a piece of skull removed. His uncle tells The Associated Press that Easton is using a breathing tube. NCAAFB – G5 teams could have fewer chances vs. P5 after realignment The realignment in the major conferences could lead to fewer opportunities in the future for Group of Five teams to play those bigger schools. Cincinnati was the first G5 team to make the College Football Playoff last year when its undefeated regular season included road wins over Notre Dame and Indiana. But the games most G5 and FCS schools play against the Power Five teams are about the paycheck they get to help finance their programs. The SEC and Big Ten are both set to expand to at least 16 teams over the next few seasons. The other Power Five leagues also are going through transitions. Tennis – Serena Williams loses to Raducanu; US Open next Serena Williams has fallen to 0-2 in matches since announcing “the countdown has begun” on her career. She lost 6-4, 6-0 to U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu in the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday night. The 40-year-old Williams said last week in a Vogue magazine essay and an Instagram post that her career was winding down. She did not explicitly say the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 29 in New York, would be her last tournament. Williams is a 23-time Grand Slam champion, most recently in 2017 at the Australian Open. She has said expanding her family is a big reason she plans to step away. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday San Diego Padres 6, Detroit Tigers 4 – 10 Innings Chicago White Sox 2, Colorado Rockies 1 Chicago Cubs 4, Pittsburgh Pirates 2 Padres 6, Tigers 4 – F/10 – Alfaro gets key 10th-inning hit as Padres beat Tigers 6-4 Jorge Alfaro capped San Diego’s three-run 10th inning with a two-run single, and the Padres beat the Detroit Tigers 6-4. Luke Voit finished with three RBIs for San Diego after he was hit by a bases-loaded pitch from All-Star Gregory Soto in the 10th. After Matthew Batten struck out swinging for the second out, Alfaro drove in Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado with a single to right. Detroit got one back on Jeimer Candelario’s RBI double in the bottom half. But Nick Martinez retired Willi Castro on a fly ball to center, earning his fourth save. White Sox 2, Rockies 1 – Kopech stars as Chicago White Sox top Colorado Rockies 2-1 Michael Kopech pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning, and the Chicago White Sox topped the Colorado Rockies 2-1. Yasmani Grandal had three hits in Chicago’s third straight win. Yoán Moncada doubled home Adam Engel in the seventh. All-Star closer Liam Hendriks worked a rocky ninth for his 19th save, surrendering Ryan McMahon’s leadoff homer. Colorado wasted a stellar performance by Germán Márquez, who permitted one run and seven hits in six innings. Cubs 4, Pirates 2 – Contreras salutes fans, helps Cubs win 6th in row, top Bucs Willson Contreras drew a standing ovation in perhaps his last home game at Wrigley Field, then keyed an early burst as the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 for their season-high sixth straight win. Contreras, one of three members left from the 2016 World Series title team, tipped his cap after being cheered at the plate his first time up. He hit a soft single in a three-run first inning. Contreras, an All-Star catcher who can become a free agent after this season, has acknowledged this might be his last homestand as a member of the Cubs before the Aug. 2 trade deadline. He saluted the fans with a fist in his last at-bat in the seventh. Representatives from the Blue Jays and White Sox were in attendance. Kelsey Plum scored 12 of her 24 points in the first quarter as the Las Vegas Aces raced to an early 23-point lead, then held on for a 93-83 victory over the Chicago Sky to win the second WNBA Commissioner’s Cup championship mid-season tournament. Plum, who won the All-Star MVP in Chicago a few weeks ago, hit six of her nine 3-point attempts. Chelsea Gray had 19 points — including nine pivotal ones in the third quarter — and earned MVP of the game. A’ja Wilson had 17 points, 17 rebounds and six blocks as the Aces dominated early, then repelled several Sky runs in the second half. Jackie Young had 18 points. Candace Parker led Chicago with 20 points and Kahleah Copper and Emma Meesseman each added 18. WNBA – Russian expert at Griner’s trial discusses medical cannabis The latest Russian court hearing in the drug trial of American basketball star Brittney Griner has focused on testimony about countries that regard cannabis as having legitimate medicinal uses. Griner has acknowledged she was carrying vape canisters containing cannabis oil when she was arrested in February at a Moscow airport. But she contends she had no criminal intent and that the canisters ended up in her luggage inadvertently because of hasty packing. Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist who plays for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of transporting drugs. Griner’s trial began July 1. Tuesday’s session lasted about 90 minutes before the case was adjourned until Wednesday. NCAAFB – Big Ten – Bold, aggressive Big Ten leaves door open for more expansion Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren says the conference will be bold and aggressive as college sports goes through a period of sweeping change. He left the door open for more expansion after the league added Southern California and UCLA for the 2024 season. Warren says the future could involve more expansion. He says the Big Ten will be strategic and look for schools that add value to the conference. The Big Ten’s big moves came less than a year after Texas and Oklahoma announced plans to leave the Big 12 for the SEC. NCAAFB – Big Ten – Big Ten coaches relying heavily on revamped defenses Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has a new defensive coordinator for the second straight year. Ohio State coach Ryan Day also made a coaching change. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz and seemingly everyone else in the Big Ten need to plug defensive holes, too. Relying on revamped defenses has become a trend in the traditionally rough-and-tumble Big Ten. It often becomes the definitive line between success or failure. NCAAFB – Big Ten – Big Ten’s expansion further damages Rose Bowl’s status Former Wisconsin football coach Barry Alvarez says the Rose Bowl will always be important to the Big Ten, but making the College Football Playoff is the priority for today’s players. The future of the Rose Bowl as a showcase game, mostly featuring teams from Big Ten and Pac-12 on New Year’s Day, was already murky as the College Football Playoff creeps toward expansion. Now that the Big Ten has poached Southern California and UCLA from the Pac-12, it remains to be seen if the West Coast’s Power Five conference will still be an important part of the Rose Bowl. NCAAFB – Lakeshore grad suits up for Crimson Tide Athletes in Southwest Michigan are no strangers to continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level, but it’s rare that they continue on at a Division 1 university, and even more rare when a local football player suits up for one of the top football teams in the nation. Lakeshore’s Logan Mooney earned one of 16 preferred walk-on roster spots for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Mooney, who just graduated from Lakeshore High School, played as a middle linebacker and quarterback for the Lancers team that went 7-4 last season. Mooney was named SMAC All-Conference as a linebacker with 73 tackles, 10 for loss, and 2 sacks. Mooney is learning a new defensive position for Nick Saban’s squad, as Mooney is moving over to the strong safety position. Alabama finished last season at 13-2 and lost to Georgia in the college football playoff championship game. The Crimson Tide are currently ranked number 2 in the preseason AP college football poll and will open the season on Saturday September 3rd at home against Utah State. Mooney’s Lakeshore Lancers open up the season on Thursday, August 25th at home against Zeeland West, which will be heard live on 97.5 Y-Country. NFL – NFL teams open camp with biggest question still unanswered Training camps opened across the NFL and the biggest offseason question remains unanswered. The Cleveland Browns still don’t know how many games they’ll be without Deshaun Watson, who is still waiting for retired judge Sue L. Robinson to issue a ruling following his disciplinary hearing that concluded nearly four weeks ago. The league and the NFL Players’ Association requested a decision by the start of training camp, according to a person familiar with the process who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the discussions are private. Robinson, who was jointly appointed by the league and the union, had no obligation to meet that deadline. Representatives are hopeful a decision comes this week. Bears’ Smith, Quinn report, unclear if they’ll practice Star linebacker Roquan Smith and defensive end Robert Quinn are on time for the Chicago Bears’ first training camp under general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus. Whether they’ll choose to participate when practices begin Wednesday remains to be seen. The Bears could have a big issue on their hands if two of their best defensive players decide not to practice. Smith and Quinn could opt instead to “hold in” by simply attending meetings while not participating in on-field activities. Smith wants an extension as he enters the fifth and final season of his rookie deal, while the 32-year-old Quinn’s future with a rebuilding team is unclear. Poles said he hadn’t seen either player. But he was told they had reported. NASCAR – NASCAR slams McDowell and team for illegally modified part NASCAR has levied another round of massive penalties, this time against Michael McDowell and Front Row Motorsports, for illegal modifications discovered after McDowell’s sixth-place finish at Pocono Raceway. NASCAR fined crew chief Blake Harris $100,000 and suspended him for four races. McDowell was docked 100 driver points, and Front Row docked 100 owner points. If the No. 34 team wins one of the five remaining regular-season races to qualify for the playoffs, McDowell will be docked 10 playoff points. The penalty was issued for an illegal modification of a single source supplied part. Golf – LIV in New Jersey, PGA has more top-20 players in Detroit The Saudi-funded LIV Golf series is back in action in the United States, this time on a New Jersey course owned by former President Donald Trump. The rival league has added three more players in their 40s with Paul Casey, Henrik Stenson and Charles Howell III. The PGA Tour is holding its own this week. The Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit has Patrick Cantlay at No. 4 in the world. He’s among five players from the top 20 in the world at Detroit Golf Club. The LPGA Tour goes to Scotland for the first of two weeks. Jackie Robinson Museum opens after 14 years of planning The Jackie Robinson Museum has opened in Manhattan with a gala ceremony attended by the 100-year-old widow of the barrier-breaking ballplayer and two of his children. Rachel Robinson watched the half-hour outdoor ceremony from a wheelchair in the 80-degree heat, then cut a ribbon to cap a project launched in 2008. Her 72-year-old daughter, Sharon, also watched from a wheelchair and 70-year-old son David spoke to the crowd of about 200 sitting on folding chairs arrayed on a closed-off section of the major New York thoroughfare where the museum is located. It opens to the public on Sept. 5. Men abused by Ohio State doctor ask court to revive lawsuits Attorneys for some of the men who sued Ohio State University over decades-old sexual abuse by team doctor Richard Strauss argue a federal appeals court should overturn a judge’s dismissal and let the lawsuits continue. A three-judge panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments Tuesday. Ohio State’s lawyers contend the claims were years too late. They argue that the students knew enough that, legally speaking, they should have started looking into further recourse back then if the late doctor’s behavior and Ohio State’s inaction were as egregious as alleged. The plaintiffs argue the clock didn’t start until allegations came to light in 2018. Judge halts horse racing authority enforcement in La., W.Va. A federal judge says a national horse racing authority cannot enforce its rules in Louisiana and West Virginia while a lawsuit challenging the organization is in court. Western District of Louisiana Judge Terry Doughty in granting a preliminary injunction said the Horseracing Integrity & Safety Authority likely went beyond its bounds on three rules that went into place July 1. State and racing officials in those jurisdictions sued to prevent the new federal authority’s regulations from going into effect. HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus says the judge’s ruling does not question the organization’s constitutionality or validity. Hey Sox fans, the Chicago White Sox are (38-39) and just swept the San Francisco Giants. They scored 19 runs in three games but did not hit a home run. Lance Lynn, Dylan Cease and Lucas Giolito all were more than serviceable in their outings. The Sox come home and begin a critical stretch of games against AL Central opponents. Will the Sox not only get back to .500 but also jump to first place in the division? With Eloy Jimenez, Liam Hendriks and Adam Engel all returning soon, the time is now for the White Sox. Thank you for the continued support and Go Sox! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/good-guys-talk-back/message
Good morning. Here's the rundown: LAST NIGHT: With Gavin Sheets and Lenyn Sosa replacing Danny Mendick and Adam Engel, the White Sox lost 4-0 to Baltimore because of an outstanding effort from the Orioles' outfield. TONIGHT: It's Michael Kopech against a likely Baltimore bullpen day, and Sosa could make his first start with Josh Harrison banged up. ON THE FARM: Christian Mena makes his High-A debut, Norge Vera bleeds (not literally), and Colson Montgomery's on-base streak is barely alive. AROUND THE LEAGUE: The Twins dodge a sweep, the Yankees aren't allowed to lose, and the Dodgers retake sole possession of the NL West. Learn more about your ad choices. Record date: 6/22/2022 Chicago White Sox win their series against Toronto Blue Jays, but it was a painful three-game set. Danny Mendick and Adam Haseley collided in the outfield. Adam Engel's hamstring is barking again and Jose Abreu can barely run. White Sox depth is already being exhausted. Is it time to see a new face join the squad? Maybe like Lenyn Sosa? Josh and Jim discuss while also having a conversation about Lucas Giolito's continued struggles. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Faedo struck out two in his fourth appearance since being called up from Triple-A Toledo on May 4. Cabrera’s double in the first scored Robbie Grossman and was the 603rd of his career, tying Cal Ripken Jr. for 16th all-time. Guardians righty Shane Bieber struck out a season-high 10 in seven innings. He gave up six hits and three runs, two of them earned, but remained winless since April 20. Cubs 5, Diamondbacks 4 – Wisdom, Schwindel homer as Cubs rally past Diamondbacks 5-4 Patrick Wisdom and Frank Schwindel hit consecutive homers against Ian Kennedy in the eighth inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 to avoid a four-game series sweep. Wisdom had a bouncer go just foul right before he connected for his ninth homer, sending a leadoff drive deep to center field. Schwindel then drove a 1-0 pitch from Kennedy into the bleachers in left for his fourth homer. Schwindel and Wisdom also hit back-to-back homers during Chicago’s 7-6 loss on Saturday. White Sox 3, Yankees 1/White Sox 5, Yankees 0 – Anderson’s HR hushes Yankees, lifts Chisox to twinbill sweep The White Sox took the opener of their doubleheader by scoring twice off Aroldis Chapman in the ninth inning of a 2-1 decision over the Yankees. AJ Pollock led off the ninth by homering against Chapman, who also gave up a one-out RBI double to Adam Engel. Aaron Judge briefly tied the game for the Yankees by homering off Kendall Graveman with one out in the eighth. Chicago wrapped up a sweep by scoring five times in the eighth inning of a 5-0 shutout of the Yanks. Tim Anderson capped the rally with a three-run homer following RBI singles by Andrew Vaughn and Reese McGuire. Michael Kopech worked the first seven innings of a combined three-hitter. Tonight Chicago Cubs (Smyly 1-5) at Cincinnati (Gutierrez 0-5), 6:40 p.m. Detroit (Rodriguez 0-0) at Minnesota (Archer 0-1), 7:40 p.m. White Sox are off MLB – Cubs C Willson Contreras day to day with hamstring injury Chicago Cubs manager David Ross has praised catcher Willson Contreras for speaking up after he felt some tightness in his right hamstring. Contreras left Saturday’s 7-6 loss to Arizona after he got hurt running the bases in the third inning. Contreras was out of the lineup for the series finale against the Diamondbacks, but he is considered day to day and Ross said it could have been worse. With Contreras’ injury, the Cubs brought up catcher P.J. Higgins from Triple-A Iowa and designated infielder Ildemaro Vargas for assignment. MLB – Boone: Donaldson shouldn’t make ‘Jackie’ remark to Anderson New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone says slugger Josh Donaldson was wrong to make a remark referencing Jackie Robinson when speaking to White Sox star Tim Anderson. A day after the comment called “racist” by Chicago manager Tony La Russa — an assessment that Anderson agreed with — Major League Baseball continued to investigate. Anderson, one of baseball’s leading Black voices, hit a home run as Chicago swept a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. Anderson and Donaldson didn’t speak to reporters. Donaldson, who is white, said Saturday he twice called Anderson “Jackie” — as in Robinson, who broke MLB’s color barrier in 1947. He said he’s used the reference in the past with Anderson, who said he viewed himself as a potential modern-day Robinson in a 2019 interview with Sports Illustrated. Parker was the sixth player to post a triple-double when she pulled it off in 2017 against the San Antonio Stars. Golf – PGA – Thomas takes PGA Championship Justin Thomas has captured the PGA Championship for the second time in five years. Thomas stormed back from seven shots back to win the second Major of the season in a three-hole playoff with Will Zalatoris. Thomas birdied the first two playoff holes and closed with a par. Thomas began the tournament with back-to-back 67s, despite getting the poor side of the draw. He shot 74 on Saturday to go backward, but he made a back-nine charge on Sunday and birdied the 17th. He closed with a 67 and finished at 5-under 275 over 72 holes. Zalatoris began the day three back of Mito Pereira. Zalatoris finished a rollercoaster round of 71 to match Thomas. Pereira squandered a one-shot lead on the 18th when he drove into the creek off the tee and made double bogey. Indy 500 – Dixon gets pole with record-breaking run Scott Dixon used a breathtaking run of more than 234 mph to post the fastest Indianapolis 500 pole run in history. The New Zealander will lead the field to green in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” for the fifth time in his career. Dixon turned four laps at an average of 234.046 mph around Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His average broke Scott Brayton’s pole-winning record set in 1996. Alex Palou will start next Sunday’s race from the No. 2 spot. It’s the best Palou has qualified in his three Indy starts. NASCAR – Blaney wins All-Star race, $1M 2 laps after thinking he won Ryan Blaney had to go two extra laps after thinking he had already won NASCAR’s All-Star race and $1 million. Blaney stayed in front through a green-white-checkered finish after a caution came out just yards before he got to the line the first time Sunday night at Texas. Blaney’s crew was already celebrating the victory in the pit and the driver had already lowered the window net after crossing the start-finish line. Pushed by his Penske teammate Austin Cindric on the restart, Blaney was able to stay in front and hold off Denny Hamlin. Tennis – French Open – Gauff, Alcaraz reach 2nd round Coco Gauff didn’t let 10 double-faults, 12 break points or a warning from the chair umpire about receiving coaching from Dad disrupt her progress into the second round at the French Open. The 18-year-old American opened stay in Paris with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Canadian qualifier Rebecca Marino. Rising star Carlos Alcaraz also advanced. The 19-year-old from Spain never faced a break point while beating Juan Ignacio Londero 6-4, 6-2, 6-0 in less than two hours. Dominic Thiem extended his losing streak to 10 matches as he works his way back from a torn tendon in his right wrist. Also making early exits Sunday were two-time Grand Slam champion Garbiñe Muguruza and No. 6 seed Ons Jabeur. Muguruza won the French Open in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2017. Olympics – Tokyo Olympic film debuts in Japan; headed next to Cannes The documentary film about the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics has had its first public viewing. The 120-minute film is produced by Japanese Naomi Kawase and looks at the Olympics primarily from the point of view of the athletes and those around them. The film will be viewed later this week at the Cannes Film Festival. Kawase has also made another film looking at the Tokyo Olympics away from the athletes. It will debut at a later date. The documentary of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics by Kon Ichikawa, titled “Tokyo Olympiad," is generally regarded as one of the most important in the genre. In his return from the COVID-19-related injured list, Giolito labored early, needing 54 pitches to complete the first two innings, allowing four hits and two walks. After Witt’s leadoff homer in the third, Giolito struck out six of the next seven batters and permitted only a pair of singles before being lifted after five innings. Pirates 3, Cubs 2 – Chicago-born rookie Suwinski homers, lifts Pirates over Cubs Rookie Jack Suwinski, who attended high school 20 minutes from Wrigley Field, hit a tiebreaking home run and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cubs 3-2, ending Chicago’s four-game winning streak. Suwinski made his major league debut this season and began the day hitting .183 with two homers. With the score 2-all, the 23-year-old outfielder from Taft High School opened the fifth inning with a drive off Drew Smyly that barely cleared the center field wall. Michael Chavis’ single in the third snapped the Pirates’ scoreless streak of 20 innings. They scored in the eighth inning of Sunday’s 1-0 win over the Reds despite being no-hit by Hunter Greene and Art Warren, then lost 9-0 and 7-0 earlier this week at Wrigley Field. Orlando’s Franz Wagner and Houston’s Jalen Green were the other players chosen for the first team by a panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters. Barnes, the No. 4 pick by the Toronto Raptors, edged Mobley for the Rookie of the Year in the smallest margin under the current format that began in 2002-03. They both received 200 points in the All-Rookie balloting, along with Cunningham, the 2021 No. 1 pick. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Last Night Seattle Storm 74, Chicago Sky 71 Storm 74, Sky 71 – Magbegor, Stewart power Storm to 74-71 win over Sky Ezi Magbegor scored 21 points, Breanna Stewart added 13 and the Seattle Storm beat the Chicago Sky 74-71. Candace Parker scored the final seven points in a 9-0 Chicago run to close out the game. The Sky (2-2) had the ball with 9.1 seconds left, but Allie Quigley misfired on a 22-footer on the game’s final shot. Azura Stevens led Chicago with 18 points. Parker finished with 11 points and nine rebounds. NCAAWBKB – Central Michigan’s top scorer Molly Davis transfers to Iowa All-Mid-American Conference first-team pick Molly Davis of Central Michigan is transferring to Iowa. That word from Hawkeyes coach Lisa Bluder. The 5-foot-7 guard from Midland, Michigan, was a three-year starter for the Chippewas and led the team last season with 18.6 points and 4.7 assists per game. She has scored at least 10 points in 67 games, including a career-high 33 points against Ohio in the 2021 MAC Tournament semifinals. Davis will have two season of eligibility because of the COVID-19 bonus year. NCAAFB – Raise makes Ohio State’s Day one of highest-paid coaches Ohio State plans to hike Ryan Day’s annual salary to $9.5 million as part of a two-year contract extension that will put him among the nation’s highest-paid college football coaches. Day’s raise makes him the latest coach to crack $9 million per year, putting him in company with Alabama’s Nick Saban and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and in line with recent megadeals given to Michigan State’s Mel Tucker and LSU’s Brian Kelly. In three seasons, Day has led the Buckeyes to a 34-4 record, including 23-1 in the Big Ten. NCAAFB – Saban calls out Texas A&M for using NIL deals to buy players Alabama coach Nick Saban called out Texas A&M, saying the school was “buying” players with name, image and likeness deals. The Aggies signed the top recruiting class in the country earlier this year. While speaking at an event in Birmingham, Alabama, Saban also mention Jackson State and Miami as schools that have used NIL deals to lure players. Jackson State coach Deion Sanders responded by calling Saban’s comments about a $1 million NIL deal for a highly touted recruit a lie. Saban said Alabama players earned more than $3 million from sponsorship and endorsement deals “the right way.” CFL – CFL, players’ union make tentative labor deal, ending strike The Canadian Football League and its players’ union have reached a tentative agreement on a new labor contract, ending the second strike in CFL history. The league made the announcement Wednesday night. The contract must be ratified by both the CFL board of governors and the CFL Players’ Association. The new collective bargaining agreement comes four days after players with seven of the league’s nine teams did not show up for the start of training camp. Players with the two remaining teams would have been eligible to walk off the job Thursday. Soccer – US Soccer equalizes pay in milestone with women, men The U.S. Soccer Federation has reached milestone agreements to pay its men’s and women’s teams equally. That makes the American national governing body the first in the sport to promise both sexes completely matching compensation. The federation has announced separate collective bargaining agreements through 2028 with the unions for both national teams. The move ends years of often acrimonious negotiations. One of the main sticking points was World Cup prize money. The unions agreed to pool FIFA’s payments for the men’s World Cup this year and next year’s Women’s World Cup. It will also pool the 2026 and 2027 tournaments. Jack and Jeremy are back with yet another raucous White Sox game…but this time, there's a big Rain Delay Theater moment for one of the guys - Jack got a foul ball! It happened in the top of the 9th inning, but the guys discuss it right up top of the recap, so be sure to tune in for that. Aside from the major triumph of the night, the boys dealt with the usual melange of freaks, goofballs, filth mouths, and miscreants they usually do at Sox games. Some highlights include a boisterous fan in an Adam Engel jersey, a dad who explains to his son that Yoan Moncada is a beast, a guy who needlessly swears in front of the aforementioned kid, a duo of drunk frat guys, and a kid whose jeans were “tight as fuck, tight as fuck”. Tune in for all of it…you've waited your whole life for this!!!
The New York Yankees managed just 2 hits but were able to put up 5 runs on White Sox pitching Sunday afternoon. Michael Kopech gave up 3 runs in his 6 innings of work, all with 2 outs in a disastrous 2nd inning. Adam Engel provided the lone run of support, a solo shot in the 8th inning to prevent the Sox from being shut out. In the second hour, Bruce Levine and Mark Grote were joined by Yankees radio broadcaster Suzyn Waldman to discuss what's behind New York's hot start to the season. She also explained why she absolutely loves Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo. Later, White Sox outfielder Adam Engel joined the show to explain why the team's early struggles are no reason to panic.

What an outstanding pitching performance from Dylan Cease. The White Sox starter went 7 innings and gave up zero runs. He was in command of everything he threw and allowed zero walks to the Angels hitters as well. The Sox offense manufactured some runs and got a big RBI double from Adam Engel that scored Jose Abreu from first base. The Sox won, 3-0. It's now time to hit the road for the White Sox and first stop is to the North Side to play the city rivals, Chicago Cubs. Michael Kopech takes to the hill and will hopefully tack on another quality start. Thank you for the continued support. We recorded an interview with White Sox ace Lucas Giolito on Thursday. And aired it today. It was an interview in which Giolito talks about his goal of throwing 200 innings and not getting injured. Then he got hurt today in the first game of the season. Whoops. And, was the White Sox's defensive positioning at the end of their loss to the Tigers what it should have been? We try to figure out why AJ Pollock didn't move over to left field with Adam Engel entering the game in right in the eighth inning. And as always, we end the show with your questions in One Last Thing.
