And in today's program, I'd like to share with you a special kind of English culture — the football. A lot of people in England are crazy about football. During the football season, whenever there is a big match, all the flags for local football teams, such as Liverpool and Newcastle are hung outside every window or even spread proudly on T-shirts or scarves. There is an atmosphere of excitement in the air. Groups of young men crowd into dark packed pubs, staring at television screens. Of course, they are covered head to toe in the colors of their team. They shout and scream in sadness when their team loses a goal or with joy when there is a moment of success. You do not have to be a fan of football to get caught up in the excitement, as far as victories are concerned.England had its big moment in 1966 in Wimbledon Stadium. The World Cup victory is in the hearts and minds of all football fans. Now, whenever England is playing a big match, red and white covers every inch of every pub, a symbol of hope — the English flag. While football has never been something I'm particularly interested in. For years, I've had to pretend excitement and pick a team to support. You cannot say you don't like or do not follow football in England, as often this will lead to a long dialogue in which someone will begin telling you why you should support their team.
On this week's show we ask the question: Why does anyone still need a physical satellite TV service?. We also read your emails and take a look at the news. There is also a standup comic bonus during the email segment. News: Tubi Launches a ChatGPT App to Give Show & Movie Recommendations Sony's 'True RGB' TVs are coming – and they were 20 years in the making Other: Home entertainment now almost 8x bigger than theaters Why does anyone still need a physical satellite TV service? After reading John's email, I thought: why does anyone still need a physical satellite TV service? So today, we're comparing traditional satellite TV like DirecTV and DISH Network versus modern IPTV and live TV streaming services such as YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Fubo, and DirecTV's own streaming service. Even though the comparison focuses mainly on satellite TV, most of these points also apply to cable TV. Introduction Satellite TV has been a reliable staple for decades. It gives you TV without needing home internet. IPTV has grown quickly because it's more flexible, easier to start, and works great with today's devices. Both services offer live channels, local stations, sports, and news. But they differ a lot when it comes to reliability, cost, setup, and overall viewing experience. In the end, the best choice for you depends on your location, internet quality, what you like to watch, and what matters most to you like sports or using different devices." Pros of Satellite-based TV Works completely independently of your home internet, making it highly reliable during broadband outages, peak usage times, or in areas with slow/unreliable connections. Excellent signal consistency and picture quality, with minimal compression and stable HD/4K broadcasts, even for live events. Typically offers a higher total number of channels, including deeper sports packages and regional sports networks (RSNs) in many markets. Strong hardware-based DVR options (such as DISH's Hopper) and easy whole-home distribution without relying on Wi-Fi. Ideal for rural or remote locations where high-speed internet is unavailable or expensive, as long as there is a clear view of the southern sky. Pros of Internet-based TV (IPTV / Live Streaming) Generally more affordable starting prices (YouTube TV around $83/month, Fubo around $74/month) with month-to-month flexibility and no long-term contracts in most cases. Easy setup with no dish installation required—just download an app and log in on any compatible device whether it be a smart TV, mobilephone, tablet, or computer. Superior on-demand content libraries and seamless integration with other streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, or Hulu. Greater device flexibility, allowing you to watch on multiple screens simultaneously (with home network limits) and pause/rewind live TV easily across devices. Unlimited cloud DVR on most platforms, frequent interface updates, and the ability to customize with genre packs or add-ons. Cons of Satellite-based TV Requires professional installation and a clear line of sight to the satellite, which can be problematic in heavily wooded, apartment, or northern-facing locations. Higher overall monthly costs in many packages (often $90–$170+ including fees and equipment rental) and potential price increases after promotional periods, plus possible 2-year commitments for the best rates. Less flexible—no easy cancellation, limited portability (tied to the installed dish), and fewer modern on-demand features compared to streaming. Weather can occasionally disrupt the signal (heavy rain or snow), and equipment upgrades or repairs involve technician visits. Setup takes longer and involves hardware that may feel outdated compared to app-based streaming. Cons of Internet-based TV (IPTV / Live Streaming) Fully dependent on a fast, stable, and preferably unlimited broadband connection—buffering, pixelation, or complete outages occur during internet issues or peak hours. Picture quality and reliability can vary based on your internet speed and provider, sometimes feeling compressed compared to dedicated satellite broadcasts. Fewer total channels in base packages than top satellite plans, and regional sports networks can be inconsistent, expensive, or missing on some services. Live TV streams are often several seconds behind traditional broadcasts, which can spoil real-time sports or news if you receive alerts from other sources. Potential for higher costs when adding sports packages, premium channels, or multiple streams, plus occasional price hikes as services mature. Summary Internet-based TV (IPTV/live streaming) is the better overall choice for the majority of households that have reliable high-speed broadband, thanks to its lower cost, greater flexibility, easier setup, vast on-demand options, and multi-device support. Services like YouTube TV consistently rank as top performers for balancing channels, DVR, and usability. However, satellite-based TV remains the only choice for those living in an area without reliable high speed internet. Our take: If you have reliable high speed internet, ditch satellite and cable TV services.

Are you feeling paralyzed by the firehose of terrible news?We get it. We feel that way, too. So we did what Mr. Rogers always told us to do when we're feeling scared: look for the helpers. On this episode, hear how people just like you are channeling their feelings of helplessness into action, doing small things in the face of big problems. As a school bus driver in Minneapolis, Jodi has watched her bus empty out as four-year-olds of colour are too scared to come to school. Her neighbours won't leave their house to go to the laundromat. So now Jodi, a Canadian with only a green card, has gas masks by her front door so she can take to the streets in protest against ICE actions in her city. A group of Iranian-Canadians in Calgary are working around-the-clock to help people send messages to loved ones in Iran, during the country's ongoing communications blackout and deadly protests. Their lifeline? Satellite TV. Armin Zarringhalam and Sepidar Valian explain how it's possible, and what it's like trying to protest the Islamic Republic in Iran from afar. How do you laugh through a crisis? When Sudanese-Canadian comedian Faris Hytiaa was working on what would become his Juno-nominated album, Homesick, he was more afraid than he's ever been. Every member of his family was in Sudan as the war broke out in 2023, fighting to stay alive and make their way to Canada. In this episode, Alex Stolz talks with Doug Shapiro, media strategist, former Turner executive and author of The Mediator, about the disruptive force of generative AI and what it truly means for filmmakers and creators. Doug draws a striking parallel: just as the internet drove the cost of moving bits (distribution) toward zero and reshaped the media landscape, generative AI is now driving the cost of making bits (content creation) toward zero. But what does that mean for the value of original storytelling? For jobs, budgets, and creativity? And how can creators and studios adapt to a world of “infinite content,” where audiences' definitions of quality are shifting, and discovery becomes the real battle? Across the conversation, Doug explores the opportunities (democratization, bold creative choices, lower barriers for new voices) and the challenges (market saturation, changing consumer standards, legal and ethical uncertainty) that AI brings. Drawing on his experience of seeing streaming disrupt TV from the inside, he shares lessons for both incumbents and emerging studios and why, despite the disruption, he believes AI can empower a new generation of creators rather than replace them. About Doug Shapiro Doug has spent nearly 30 years in and around the media industry, as an analyst, strategist, advisor and operator. He is currently an independent advisor and consultant, speaker, and senior advisor for Boston Consulting Group. He also writes The Mediator, which is widely read and circulated in the industry. Doug is frequently asked to present his views about the evolution of the media business at corporate offsites, institutional investor conferences, industry events, and academic institutions. He is also writing Infinite Content: AI, the Next Great Disruption of Media, and How to Navigate What's Coming, due to be published by The MIT Press in 2026. Prior to his current role, Doug was the Chief Financial Officer and a Managing Member of Pugilist Capital LLC, an investment firm formed with the purpose of acquiring media and media-adjacent technology businesses. Before that, he was EVP and Chief Strategy Officer at Turner, a division of WarnerMedia, and member of the Executive Committee, where he headed the Corporate and Data Strategy functions. Prior to that position, Shapiro was the SVP of International and Corporate Strategy at Time Warner Inc. He previously headed the Time Warner Investor Relations group, overseeing the development and execution of the company's investor relations initiatives, formulating investor messaging and serving as the primary contact for Time Warner with the investment community. Before joining Time Warner, Shapiro was a senior equity analyst at Banc of America Securities and Deutsche Banc Securities, where he covered the Cable and Satellite TV and Media Conglomerate sectors. He was ranked as one of the top Cable and Satellite analysts by Institutional Investor magazine each year from 1997 to 2006.
